I do actually love Vegito. But it's because of the anime, which is probably the same for most people. His design and clothes are cool. His attacks are (almost) as cool as Gotenks', and the finger beam and sword are cool. But I also just completely adore when jawbreaker vegito exclaims: "I'm a jawbreaker, the hardest candy in the universe!" Then beats Buu up. It might be meaningless to the story, but unlike a lot of the fights up to that point. . . It was fun! I guess most of those best parts are in the manga too.

Same. Vegito's episodes were the first Dragon Ball media I ever purchased on VHS back in the day. I always hear about vegitas strategic thinking… what is anyone talking about?? He’s strategic in the namek saga, but all of that is outside of battle, (minus the time he picked up sand and dropped it on that one guys eyes. That was cool.)
He even let an android suck energy from him to “confirm” they can do that. That was as strategic as piccolo letting Gero lazer him and falling to the ground to “catch him off his guard”
You could say vegita figured out grade 4 was too bulky for combat, but so did goku, and no one talks about his strategic mind. It was simply obvious. I do like to think that potara is the more powerful version of fusion since the two people don’t have to match energy levels often making one lower their power a bit. You get both peoples full power, and a synergy that boosts it above the sum total of their parts.

Both goku and vegeta were always cocky, but never in the same way vegito was (or gogeta in gt)
It always feels like, when most characters fuse, we just get some “non-character” out of it, where the end product doesn’t even quite feel like either of them, but isn’t really given the screentime to show us the depths of how the fusion affects who they are as an individual.

I love Vegito, but I do believe you could say that it comes from a place of nostalgia or bias. My very Dragon Ball VHS tape (yes, I’m a 90s kid) was Fusion: The Last Saiyan. My mom bought it for me at Wal-Mart. This was when the Fusion & Kid Buu sagas were wrapping up their home releases here in the U.S. before GT would eventually come out.
The only reason I got that tape instead of another one from the Buu Saga was because it had four episodes instead of three on it. So, I really got to know Vegito more than Goku OR Vegeta when I first began to watch the series. I loved the dual voices of the character along with the fact that he was wrecking Buu like it was no one’s business. When he got turned into candy, I was laughing my behind off because Buu was getting wrecked by a marble-sized opponent. Sort of reminds me of how Ant-Man was whopping Falcon in his first solo movie.
I’ll treasure his first appearance against Buuhan way more than when he showed up in Super to fight Zamasu for the sake of fan service. Not saying that I hated Vegito in Super, but to see him struggling for a bit in that brawl to the point of displaying some battle damage is hard to stomach considering he took some hits from Buuhan (mostly on purpose) and didn’t have a scratch on him. Goku & Vegeta stood no chance against Buu separately, but Goku soloed Merged Zamasu’s Holy Wrath AND destroyed his Barrier of Light (halo). Nah, give me Buu Saga Vegito any day of the week!
My biggest gripe about Vegito is the fact that he went through all that trouble to get absorbed to save Gohan and the others. However, they all wind up dying anyway once Kid Buu blew up the planet. It makes the “Why didn’t Vegito just kill Buuhan and then wish everyone who died back?” argument more valid.

And I had no idea about timeslots, so I never got to follow up and see them defuse. For the longest time, until like Budokai 2 or so, I didn't know who vegito was. Just that one guy.

I always liked Vegetto not for his strength, but more because of what he represents when an iconic rivalry truly unites and works together. When I had first watched Dragon Ball Z as a child, I remember feeling particularly blue-balled during Namek when Vegeta immediately abandoned Goku as they were going to fight Ginyu together. I remember thinking how cool it would be to see them working together after such a fierce fight in the prior arc. Vegetto to me succeeds in a way Gotenks doesn't: he can screw around in the fight and have fun without risking failure. He exudes the same confidence, but he can back it up. His silliness doesn't come off as immaturity, but as something like the Muten-roushi being so far ahead early on that he can afford to not be serious for a bit. He's got it all planned out in the back of his mind.
He's got a bit of Vegeta's conniving and planning side to him from Namek, and Goku's playfulness. It feels like the first true moment that Goku and Vegeta work with each other for a common goal, and that their teamwork manages to be so effortlessly successful that it's silly the only thing that was holding them back all this time was pride. Even during the final fight against Cell, the moment that turned the tides was when Vegeta played along and distracted Cell long enough for Gohan, with Goku's coaching, to deal the finishing blow.
It's also probably not a fair comparison to use the movie here as an example, but it became easy to contrast Vegetto and Gogeta. Where Vegetto had a cheerful and utterly confident disposition, Gogeta in movie 12 was so brief but acted far more pragmatically and immediately ended his fight. While that was likely due to him being the climax of a fairly short film overall and being strapped for time, it does paint the picture that he's more serious of a character than Vegetto, especially since he only ends up giving an actual smile right at the end after the action's over.
And as an aside, I do like the Potara visually and how Toriyama used something that incorporated left-right symmetry in the same way Fusion does to achieve a similar result.

    • @JakeSmith-mq5dc
      @JakeSmith-mq5dc 2 роки тому +15

To further your point. Toriyama said the difference between the 2 fusions is that Vegito is NEITHER Goku or Vegeta, but it's own entity that has taken the dominant personality with some quirks of the submissive personality. Meanwhile Gogeta is both Goku and Vegeta souls merged evenly together like the synchronized dance implies which is visually shown having half of Goku's and Vegeta's face right down the middle. As for personality, I always assumed that Gogeta from that movie is the more pragmattic fusion due to Vegeta's influence in the mind, but that smile at the end signify he would be more Goku at heart.

Definitely Vegetto is, at least aesthetically, a better design than for example Gotenks, which really beyond Trunks' angry eyes and hair colors, has practically nothing in common with Goten and Trunks. What's more, even at certain points he appears to be some kind of miniature Vegeta (both in design and in mental age).
At least in Vegetto the characteristics of its components are more evident. A pity that this is one of the few positive things that can be said about the character.

Neither Goten nor Trunks have vertically spiked hair and a widow's peak so why does Gotenks?? It's like Toriyama could have been so creative in combining their physical qualities yet this is what he came up with. Just seemed very lazy and uninspired.
It's also why I prefer Vegito to Gogeta, Vegito is the perfect combination of them to the point you can see it, Mistarefusion described it perfectly. I only liked movie 12 version Gogeta's design tho because for this same reason, combining Vegeta's widow's peak with Goku's bang was nice. Every other Gogeta design unfortunately shits on it all

Ever since your DBS: Broly review where you briefly talked about Gogeta, I’ve kept wondering “what exactly is it that bothers him about Goku and Vegeta fusing?”. I finally have the answer, and it was dang worth the wait and one I agree on.
I also agree the permanence rule should’ve stuck around. One idea I sometimes entertain is swapping the difference factor Super introduced: temporary for gods, but permanent for mortals. That way, the individuality sacrifice here remains with Buu’s magic being the true reason it was stopped. Later on in Super, the sacrifice is done again, but because of Goku and Vegeta’s new godly power, it becomes a twist that it’s no longer permanent for them, and in the case of the manga, a hope-bringing ticking clock that the heroes survive Merged Zamasu enough for his fusion to end too because of the divine essence of Black’s Rosé.

But Goku’s caring nature motivates him to use a risky ploy to save his friends and family inside buu and without the chip on Vegeta’s shoulder of having to be better then Goku, because he also is Goku, he’s able to use his more tactical side to come up with the plan to pretend to be absorbed.

My first experience with the character of Vegito was actually a toy of him. Since my parents got things from Japan we got a lot of things of the series before they ever came out in America such as figures (though mostly just had Tankobon's of the series up to the 23rd Budokai and VHS tapes of the 22nd Budokai and the start of Piccolo Daiamo) . The only "story" we had from that far in though was the Tankobon that had Gohan getting his energy drained by Babidi's henchmen, so until we got the final Tankobon I just thought Vegito was a brand new character unrelated to the others. As you were going over the name issue, my mind immediately just thought he should be called "Vegarot" in English once you'd pointed out how the names combined. I actually never knew it was using "Kakarot" as part of it (cause yeah, it makes no sense for Goku to go with Kakarot so I never would've thought that'd be part of the combination), I just thought it was a random-ass name that used part of "Vegeta" as the first part of the name.

The fact you spend most of this video discussing the naming semantics of Vegetto's name is evidence of how little you care about this momentary distraction that the character is.
Funnily enough, if I remember correctly, in Portugal they used the name "Vegeku" for the character in the anime, likely because they didn't get the memo that Vegetto is a combination of Vegeta and Kakarotto, so they changed it so it could become a combination of Vegeta and Goku. And then again, they didn't really use the name Kakarotto or Kakarot, and instead they had Vegeta call him "Cachalote", often in a derogatory tone, which implied it was an insulting nickname, which is Portuguese for Sperm Whale/Cachalot.
It wasn't until years later that I discovered that Goku's Saiyan's name was Kakarotto, and started wondering about the whole "Cachalote" thing.

I don't know where I remember reading or learning of this, but I remember there being more discussion on the differences between Potara and the fusion dance. Specifically that the Fusion dance is a 50/50 merger of the two people while the Potara isn't. The person with the more dominant personality traits gets a more dominant share of the looks and personality. So the fact that they went with Kakarot instead of Goku would be a reflection of this.
Actually, this might have been something that was explained with Gogeta and not with the Potara specifically. I don't remember LOL Maybe anime filler exposition? Vegeta's "Oh great, tell me NOW" are a subtle jab at Goku (This is classic you, Kakarot!) and Goku's "Thanks, Vegeta" (IN ENGLISH IN THE JAPANESE ANIME NO LESS) is an acknowledgement that its a sacrifice. Vegeta still puts on the earrings, he doesnt even hesitate, he just says "Like this? Is this right?". He's ALREADY redeemed and it shows. They both know they'd do it anyway, because it needs to be done, and they're in that buddy-cop movie thing where they irritate the heck out of each other doing it. This should have only been all the more true in Super, and if they wanted Goku and Vegeta to use a temporary fusion against Zamasu it should have been with the dance (there having been more than enough time over the intervening years for Vegeta to have learned it off screen) instead of retconning the earings... and yet I can still remember when I pointed it out back then that there where fans shooting me down solely over the objection that Gogeta could never appear in Super because he wasn't "canon".

So, you brought up the movie affecting the plot here, so this might be my last chance to bring it up.
I have this theory, that similar to how potara came about because gogeta was planned for the movie, that Super Buu as a whole, was also built from, toriyama hearing plans for janemba, and subconciously working in some of those concepts into Buu for this series. Maybe even conciously, but my reason for this is that, Presumably, the Fusion movies plot and characters would likely have been planned out as early as when the last movie finished production and went out. While stuff like Gotenks and Ultimate gohan would have been the last things worked into the script, well into when toriyama would have been already planting seeds for his revisions.
So while this doesn't mean much in story, this might mean that the critique for Janemba being a knock off buu is misled, as Janembas only similiar elements with buu likely were set up BEFORE buu himself even had those traits added to his character.

Probably already read this, but a plausible explanation would be that Vegetto is a Vegeta dominat fusión and Gogeta is a Goku dominant one. 😗

    • @EmeralBookwise
      @EmeralBookwise 2 роки тому +1

The idea that there is a dominant personality seems somewhat antithetical to fusion, the dance version in particular. It's made very clear that for the dance to work both participants have to be in perfect sync with each other.

@@EmeralBookwise martial sync, ki sync, but (and I may be wrong) dont recall anything about their personalities having to match or be balanced. It would also explain why with the potaras that requieres no martial skill Vegeta (that leans more into raw power) comes on top and with the dance is Goku the leading one. Of course this is just headcanon and speculation 😗. For example at a technical lvl theres no particular explanation why different fusion methods would generate different personas, yet they seem to do. Like lets say Gotens and Trunks use the potaras, what would be the result? Logic dictates that theres no reason for the result to just be Gotenks, but the narrative facts seem to indicate otherwise.

@@NicolasCaja: except the different techniques don't seem to result in different persons. The only example we have is Goku and Vegeta, but their fusion vs Janemba can hardly be taken as an example because the movie never has the time to show us anything about that persona. So that just leaves us with Gogeta's appearance in the Super Broly movie, a movie were he doesn't really speak of Vegito like it was a different personality, just another name he's used under different circumstances.
The pretense that Vegito is less serious doesn't really hold water either. Yes, he seems that way vs Buu, but he was faking that to goad Buu into absorbing him. By contrast, when Vegito fights Zamasu, he doesn't really waste any time and just goes all out as hard as he can, only running out of fusion time because no one expected SSB to burn through it so fast.

@@EmeralBookwise wait, is that even true? I just go back to watch the fusion scene and Gogeta doesnt seems to consider himself another version of Vegitto, but his own fusion-persona, thats why he stops to come up with the name Gogeta before going to punch Broly
Not too say that Gogeta and Vegitto look different even beyond the clothes
Vegitto has always come to me as a cocky Vegeta, while Gogeta seems a serious Goku
that would also explain by Vegitto uses Kakarot instead of Goku 😗

I never noticed that earring discreptency with Shin's before now. I can't remember if the anime also changed it but you'd think going from Zarbon to Android 19 and 20's would be a downgrade.

This was really interesting, not in the sense of you know surprise, but interesting one hearing what you didn't like... Which actually gave me an answer to why i didn't find Vegetto interesting and i wanted to just move on, and didn't understood why everyone was so hype about it... Now i have it... Thanks for giving me this answer :D
