      Well, apparently, this Kaio Shin was the strongest of the 4 cardinal points and it explained why Buu had to absorb him, because he offered him enough resistance to do so, while having just killed the 2 others right away (as the remaining one became the main one we all know). As for the Elder Kaio Shin, he may not have been the strongest by sheer power actually, but having special powers related to magic instead. I believe the reason why Buu turned temporarly into this form is because the South Kaio Shin was the first to be ever absorbed and as long it was a very long time ago, the absorption effect might just have become permanent after a while (pretty much like expired products, in fact !). Buu's body functions just like any DNA cells, after all : what he consumes is ending up fully digested inside of him, although his body remembers what he used to absorb. So it just showed up previous updates and acts like a bugged-crashed computer from some virus, pretty much...in a very messy, incoherent way, without any doubt about it though ! But only to fully reset himself on and off, that's how I see it.

      If Toriyama wanted to put Gohan in the Goku spot so bad, and make him late to the party only to come out of nowhere and save the universe, the whole purpose of Vegeta could have been to save Gohan after his loss and Tien could have played an integral part by making the last second save by grabbing everyone who was unconscious and lead to a 'survivors vs ultimate evil' final fight.
      The fact Toriyama became unable to write any other character that isn't Goku or plays his role in the lead really made the Boo Saga take a turn for the worst in my eyes. 15:20 It's worth mention that Kid Buu, at first, did not care about fighting. The very first thing he does is fire an attack to the destroy the Earth. Once he's transformed, he takes no interest in Goku or Vegeta. He likely doesn't even remember them. He also reacts with what seems to be genuine surprise when Vegeta stopped his attack. Kid Buu only develops an interest in Goku and Vegeta when they showed the capacity to actually inhibit Buu's wanton destruction. The next thing he does is make an attack big enough they can't block it. And then he follows them back to the Kaioshin world, likely with the intent of killing them for having survived. Well I agree Kid Buu is not a deep character, he does seem to have at least sense of agency when it came to Goku and Vegeta
    As for Evil Buu and Fat Buu, I liken it more to what happens with Kami and King Piccolo. Evil Buu is just Fat Buu's evil nature spilled out, basically like a fissure but they were still linked. Once Evil Buu eats his other half, he's basically just doing fusion. I'm also guessing Fat Buu was stuck into a pod by Evil Buu to make sure they could not spilt again. At least that's how I see it.

    I made this comment on TFS’ most recent video, but I recently realised that the most likely reason for the popularity of character’s like Vegitto, Majin Vegeta and even Kid Boo probably has a lot to do with how they’re represented in video games. Usually since they’re at the end of the series, they’re some of the hardest characters to unlock and therefore a lot more powerful than most other characters. I’m certainly not innocent in this “big numbers equals better character” mindset. (My favourite character in the series is Coola).

      I think that videogames are irrelevant here, since it seems like characters are loved more for their power before anything. Jiren has had like two appearances in videogames and neither were that special. He was always super popular due to his sheer power alone, with his personality never brought up. Nowadays dragonball just has fans who are a bit (and only a bit) more critical, so Jiren also got a lot of haters despite being not much better than the likes of Buuhan. The fusions are really the only characters I would give videogames credit for boosting popularity, but even then the concept and smug confidence they have basically already sealed them as poupular characters. People just want 'badass' characters. It's the reason Imperfect Cell will never be more popular than Perfect Cell, why Gohan in his fights against Cell and Buu are considered his best appearances despite being way more shallow than Saiyaman (who people like as a joke but very few would accept as the character going forward). It's the reason movie villains are beloved at all.
      Like you, I'm not completely innocent either. Cooler is also my favourite character despite the massive flaws in his writing. But I would never contribute my love of him to videogames, where he is usually a filler character. I think his design, potential in the story and other minor factors are why people love him. Majin Vegeta and Vegitto are much easier to figure out considering they're their base characters at their most 'badass' (Vegeta full on evil but with all his extra melodrama for the edgy factor and Vegitto for his sheer confidence).
      Kid Buu seems a lot more complex though. He's not the strongest Buu or the most 'badass' Buu. He represents a chaotic factor and is extremely pragmatic. No monologues, no moments of pathetic defeat and a crazy aspect from the other Buus without being as silly as Fat Buu or as boring as Buuhan. He is a force of nature with a very silly personality but never veers into the territory of unintimidating. My personal favourite Buu is Super Buu (Before absorbing anyone) as I feel it gets all the fun of Kid Buu and Fat Buu whilst having this rage that makes him unpredictable which is really interesting to see characters (Mostly Piccolo) work around.

    Pure/Kid Buu works for me just because he unintentionally acts as a book ends with the first arc of the series.
    The conflicts in both arcs are both capped with a frenzied monster that comes about through external stimuli it can't control, and carries out destruction because that's all it knows and wants, and can't be reasoned with due to not being able to comprehend much in the first place. the "it's only permanent for Kaioshins!" in Super is one of those things that sort of defeats the point of the 'it's permanent!" to begin with. Why make it conditional when it only had like 5 minutes of thought?
    i guess maybe if movie 12 was different, Goku and Vegeta could fuse off an existing concept and we'd avoid all of this....

    • @machine1685
      @machine1685 2 роки тому +3

      My headcanon that I created for my fusion characters in DBXV2 is that Potara IS permanent for Kais. For other races, it's permanent as long as the earrings are on. If you take them off, the fusion is no longer permanent and will take up to an hour to completely break down (putting the earrings back on will stop the clock and restabilize the fusion). In my AU, potara was created by the Kaioshin to seal away enemies that are too powerful. Kais are trained to have unparalled mental and spiritual power, which makes it easy to dominate a fusion (explaining why Shin dominates Kabito Kai).

    Goku saving Dende and Satan, and not Gohan actually makes a ton of sense. Both from a logical choice and a story writing choice.
    From a logical standpoint, Dende can make Dragon Balls. Even if they're destroyed he can eventually make new ones. Keeping the guy that can potentially save everyone and the earth makes total sense.
    From a narrative standpoint. The current Gohan is stronger than Goku or Vegeta at this point, and probably much stronger than the current Buu as well. If you're putting those two back in the spotlight you need Gohan out of the picture. Goku not being able to get to his unconscious body before the planet explodes is a convenient way to get him out of the picture.

      There's nothing in the story to even possibly suggest that there's a cool down between technique usages. And by that, I mean it's never brought up as a reason for why the characters don't do combos such as the one you suggested. Krillin doesn't use that combo for the same reason Goku exploited Frieza's lack of being able to sense ki only once in their fight- plot needs the fight to go a certain way and will force the characters to ignore solutions that would solve the conflict quickly.

    • @NiGHTSnoob

      We do know Goku needs to be able to sense Ki to transmission properly, and they were all unconscious. We also know that characters lose their transformations when they're unconscious so their Ki output presumably drops to practically nothing, and Buu was currently throwing a giant Ki attack at the planet that might have made it more difficult to pick out a small Ki. I don't think Goku not being able to jump over and grab them when he was also currently looking for a way out is that big of a stretch, especially because we don't know exactly how much time he had. Even had he jumped over he still would have needed to pick all their bodies up.

    Like others have said, the Southern Kaiōshin was still technically in that evil Boo by being inside the fat one. The Fat Boo may have been freed from the absorption, but he was still inside the pure Boo and thus he could still influence him (see Pure Boo being unable to harm Mr. Satan).
    And the Southern Kaiōshin may have been the dominant influence on the evil Boo‘s personality. While it’s merely headcanon, I think it’s plausible that the evil Boo and the fat Boo got their thirst for battle from the Southern Kaiōshin, and since he was still technically in Pure Boo‘s head for a while, there was still a bit of influence here and there.

    Now that we're getting to the end of arc, I'm curious if you're planning on talking about how Toriyama seems to have reused a lot of lore and backstory behind Piccolo and God when he wrote the various ways Boo changes throughout the story. I mean, you have one character who splits into two people, one pure good and one pure evil, how they end up recombining into an even stronger fighter, (twice if you count GT) and how the evil half ends up dying and reincarnating into a good guy. The order of operations are shuffled around, and I find it very funny how the two Boos seem completely immune to the same "one cannot exist without the other" rule that defined God and Piccolo's role through much of the story, but the concept seems too similar for it to just be a councidence.

    Merry Christmas in advance Lance :D The whole Majin Buu rant made a lot of sense and I think in a way that's how I saw it in my mind, but not as eloquently put as you did. I think I mentioned this in the comments of the last video, but I feel like Buu's separation is very similar to Kami splitting into a good being and an evil being. So that could go a long way into explaining the rest of the transformations. Fat Buu split up into the good Fat Buu and the evil Grey Buu using whatever magic mechanics that Kami also used (probably by having an existential crisis, which might just be a trigger to just split in two in Dragon Ball) and then the Grey Buu absorbed Fat Buu. That's the point where he turned into a cocoon inside the Grey Buu and the Grey Buu then took his appearance as a mix between him and the Fat Buu. And then adding the way you explained the Grey Buu turning into his own person.
    To be fair, that explanation didn't really add anything super substantial, but I always thought it was interesting how much this paralelled Kami and Piccolo's journey. Both got angry, and eventually the 'evil' half absorbed the 'good' half.

      I am definitely sad I'm getting near the end of the series. Doing something for ten years will do that to you. That said, I have done my best never to pad out an episode for the sake of prolonging the series. I simply write what I want to write. I hope that wasn't the case in this episode, especially given all the other hurdles. This episode is paced the way it is for other, perhaps more mundane reasons.
      Writing five scripts at once definitely wears me out. And this one in particular has the deck stacked against it. It's the fourth manga review in a row. It comes directly after what I knew would be the big hit, big topic-focused episode. That positioned this one as something of a clean-up. The previous episode didn't progress the story along all that much, so this one had to. But on top of that, it's the episode leading into a movie, which means it can only be allowed to move the plot along so far since I always cover movies at the specific chapter break in which it is released. So my fear always ends up being that I have left far too big a space to cover in one episode... or far too small a space to fill an entire episode.
      Contrary to what you might expect, that didn't really happen here. Instead, I extremely overwrote this, and I didn't realize how overwritten it was until I had finished recording it and had a raw audio file that was over an hour long, which has never happened in the history of DBD. I considered cutting out the tangent about Goku's and Vegeta's Fusion versus Potara inside Boo dialogue since, while it was an unexpectedly fun thing I happened to pick up while I was prepping for the video, it wasn't necessarily of tantamount importance. But it was ultimately so short it didn't really matter.
      So actually I cut out the entire... ehhh, third third or second half of this video and just had to shelve it until next year! It was another big topic, but it neither fit in this run time, nor did it need to be covered before the movie. So I did have to hastily shuffle some things around, add in the last couple of minutes about Goku's failure to save Gohan and the others to then make it long enough! It was definitely the hardest video of the month, to be sure. =P

There can be a lot of drama between them for that, maybe even a full-on argument or fight inside of Buu, honestly! 16:18 It wasn't until recently that I read some people blaming Goku for not *choosing* to save his friends or directly *abandoning* them at the time of the explosion for preferring to save Satan and Dende.
    I always believed that it was clear that Goku was going straight for his friends but he saw the others on the way, and what went through his mind was that he believed he could save them all.
    This also tells us about his character, his kind nature didn't allow him to abandon them (Vegeta wouldn't have saved them.) even though, in quotes, they doesn't have the strength to face Boo.
    Great video!

    I do like when toriyama gag writing comes into play when having a final villain like kid buu. we started with fat buu who pretty much is a gag character and work are way up to more cool looking buu's then end up with a kid version who happens to be his original form, its not common as a final villain but here it works.

    I love these videos...and I have since the Android saga, when I found this UA-cam channel. (I wish I'd found you earlier...though I guess I have lots of videos I can view in your back catalog.) But it seems that we're getting to the end. It kind of fully dawned on me while watching this, even before the end of the video where you mentioned the "final battle". (While writing this, I see I'm not alone.) What are you planning after this? I know the original Dragon Ball was magical, but I'd definitely settle for Dragon Ball Super Dissection... Anyway, I'm sad this journey is coming to an end, but I hope you continue putting out more dissection videos of some sort even after the Buu saga comes to a close. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    But isn't Fat Boo also a part of Kid Boo, seeing as Fat Boo transformed from him originally? It doesn't make any sense that Boo's "pure form" would be able to come back without Fat Boo as part of him. Or are we saying that NONE of Kid Boo was in Fat Boo when he split into Fat/Skinny forms? In that case, did Skinny Boo contain all of Kid Boo when he split off of Fat Boo? But then why did Skinny Boo exist at all if he didn't have any of Fat Boo in him and didn't need him in order to revert back to-- you know what nevermind, I'm thinking too hard about this. Let's just enjoy the cute pink Silly Putty monsters fighting.

    Personally I think it would have been far more interesting if Goku were the one to refuse to fuse again. Just wait for them to exit buu, then have goku say something like "He's weakened enough that I think we have a chance to defeat him without fusing, and I want to test the limits of SSJ 3". It's in character as goku does not like to rely on others for power, and if you were to have vegeta push for the fusion despite the risks, that would establish Vegeta and Goku's difference in character and what would become the separate paths they would take in the super manga

    • @jasonone8726
      @jasonone8726 Рік тому

      Huh? But that's exactly what happened though. Goku refused to fuse again, when they were up against Kid Buu, because he thought that version was weaker, with him having no one fused.

    You know, Vegeta wasn't given the choice of whether he wanted to permanently fusing with Goku exactly because he's Vegeta doing Vegeta stuff. The threat of Majin Buu was immediate and there was no time for Vegeta complaining yet again.

    I personally kinda like Kid Buu. He is very unique among Dragon Ball villains. He doesn't have a plan, a goal, an ego, or even a reason to fight. He is just a "force of nature", a creature of chaos and destruction, and nothing he does make any sense or rhyme. We never got, and probably never will, get a villain like that in Dragon Ball again.

    • @olserknam
      @olserknam 2 роки тому +2

      I think Janemba works better as a "purely evil force of nature", if only because of his design and inherent connection to the divine, while Buu is just some random monster created by a wizard.

    The "Kid Buu Transformation" does have some merits. The way I see it when Fat Buu got eaten by Old Buu to turn into Super Buu, it triggered his biology that caused him to revert back into Kid Buu.

    My completely baseless theory for south kaioshin is that Toriyama's editor at the time knew readers would want to know what happened to the other cardinal direction kaioshins, also he noticed a sketch of a weirdly buff superbuu on Toriyama's drawing board, and after noticing these two potential hanging plot threads he ordered Toriyama to whip up an unneeded backstory to tie them together.

      It makes sense to me that when eating someone, Buu has the option of absorbing them instead of killing them. He needed to absorb Fat Buu in order to become "whole", but characters like Bulma simply aren't worth absorbing.
