    I am really sorry to say this but, an engineer you are not. You must have basic engineering practical knowledge before using something as complicated as a lathe. Replacing the stud was painful to watch.

      Thank you for the comment. I think from the title and thumbnail it's clear that this isn't the best way to approach this, and I make no claims about being an engineer. Having said that this video is a couple of years old and I have used the lathe quite successfully for several small jobs, mainly in support of my other projects. You may be interested in this one:

    Have fun with your new lathe. Make sure that you don't wear a ring (or any other jewelry, or loose sleeves) when you operate the lathe. Even a small lathe can do a lot of damage. Your skin and bones are a lot softer than anything on that machine.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  4 роки тому

      Thanks 👍. Yes I need to make sure I don't wear long sleeves for this. I do have a ring, so I'll have to think about how not to loose it if I take it off! 😀

    very useful video. thanks for sharing your hiccups too.
    you could have tightened the post bolt with 2 nuts, the same way you loosened it up.
    other than that it looks pretty straightforward to replace the tool post on your type of lathe. I'm still waiting for my 1st lathe ever to arrive, and I don't even know what type / size of compond is on mine.
    I've seen some people had to bore a bigger hole, and some people had to bore a recess underneath the compound to be able to fit it.
    I hope my lathe will allow me an easy replacement, like in your case.
    I will however order the piston type, and I don't like the wedge style dovetail. something is telling me that the piston would be more consistent and rigid, but I don't really qualify to make any opinions just yet. I'm as new to the lathe as you can imagine.

      Thanks 😀 👍. Glad you found it useful. I agree, 2 nuts would have made more sense, and I do not know why it didn't do that as it was the basic plan in my head before I started filming. I did consider a reshoot, but thought my mistakes might make a more informative and interesting video.
      I've not had any experience of other sorts of quick change tool holders. This design works fine, though there is space for swarf to get in between the moving surfaces, and it pays to keep it well lubricated as toolholders can get misaligned and jammed if you put put them on carefully. I have bought tool holders from a variety of sellers, and I also believe they come out of several factories. All fit, but one is a tight fit, though I think I know why and hope to improve at some point in the future

    A major drawback of all quick change systems is that they will place your tools overhanging, outside of the compound slide and essentially form a 'U' shape which introduces all kinds of very undesirable forces. I decided to revert back to a solid block setup on a larger lathe we have in the shop and use (ground) shim plates for center height adjustment. Also, inspired by mr. Renzetti I am considering getting rid of the compound slide altogether. Which has the additional advantage of being able to use larger cross section tools, further improving stability.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, very good points. I only have experience of this size of lathe and smaller. My previous machine had a single tool post for which I had to shim the tool, and it was very slow going. Most of the work I do is small screws and fittings and despite the issues with rigidity (and the lathe isn't as rigid as it could be anyway) I find the QCTP makes working much faster. Thanks 😀 👍

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  Рік тому

      Yes, if you are not going to change the tool, then using the supplied tool post and shimming should work fine. If it's HSS and you have to resharpen it, then you will need to adjust the shimming from time to time. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks 😀 👍

    painful watching you remove stud, how long did it take to remove

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  2 роки тому

      Getting the original stud out wasn't too much of a problem once I had the lock nuts in place. Probably would have been faster if I wasn't so concerned about knocking the camera and just given it a bit more brute force. Having jammed the nut on the new stud, it was probably 15 minutes work to get the nut off again before then using lock nuts to fit it onto the lathe.

      mrrgstuff ok well i have created a group for people who make there own gramophone it’s just something that i think you would enjoy. This isn’t anything big yet but you have inspired me to make this group because its not something that every record fanatic is really comfortable with doing. If you could support my group in any way that would be really cool.

      @mrrgstuff  4 роки тому +1

      Interesting to hear about that. Hope it goes well for you and you find some other Gramophone builders. I may have to reconsider joining Facebook! You are right though that not everyone is comfortable with the thought of using home made record players. This is particularly the case with vinyl where there is s real chance of damaging something that is worth money. However there are millions of worthless records in the world, particularly 78s so I don't feel too bad about using them! 😀

    I think it is a recipe for disaster letting you near a lathe as you don’t even know how to use basic hand tools(ie adjustable wrench. Good luck with your fingers around your lathe.

      Thank you for your comment. Sometimes when filming, things don't always go to plan, especially as you are trying to get the best shot and not knock the camera. I could have edited it to make it 'perfect', but I was honest that I made basic mistake. This isn't my first lathe, and I find it very useful for for all sorts of little jobs.
