  • No need to swap out the original threaded stud if you want to keep your mini lathe stock, or if it's a different lathe which is not compatible with the supplied kit. The end screen links to my earlier review of this cheap little QCTP.

Well Rob what a coincidence, I just ordered a BXA 250-200 for my Lathe yesterday. At the time I thought Rob should do a video on mounting these. Great minds think alike!! Great video I learnt something new again. Well done !!

It is nice to have a choice of tool posts. Sometime I remove the QC and put on the lantern type when I am really needing room to work.

Hi Harold, I totally agree. I used a rocker type lantern on my Schaublin for many years and it worked fine. They are very very easy to adjust and surprisingly rigid. Cheers Rob

It should do well Shawn. I will be interested to see the difference. Cheers Rob

Nice one Rob 👍👍 I've never really bothered with a QCT, I have two four ways, each with two tools fitted which covers the tooling I use most frequently. Like you, I don't really have a problem with shimming if I need to use something else. Cheers, Alan.

Hi Alan, the QCTP works well on the Schaublin, but I doubt I would buy one (this was free). I used a lantern tool post on that old lathe for many years and it never troubled me. That's about as basic as you can get and a four way is much much more rigid. On small lathes this is of primary concern and if there's a likelihood that will be compromised, it won't happen ;) Cheers Rob

I need to do this on my old Hafco - thanks!

Glad it helped. Some lathes can be difficult to fit these to, especially when they have a free floating (self aligning) pull down bolt (like my CQ9325). If you can retain the original bolt it should make things a lot easier. Cheers Rob

Nice sympathetic modification Rob. I think you now have the best setup for your machines. Rigidity is all about the weakest point and I think you will have more capability on the Schaublin with the 4 way for if you ever need to push the limits (plus it looks nicer)!
    Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon, the Schaublin can only push so hard as it will get flat belt slip before the QCTP gets stressed out ;)
It worked out well in the end after I shimmed the QCTP base on the Schaublin to standardise the tooling height for both lathes. I can now use the same tooling setup on both units (straight swap over).
I also played around with the QCTP versus the four way on the mini lathe to see what difference it made and quite frankly I couldn't see any. So the cheap little QCTP is actually pretty good for light to medium work.
      Interesting exercise.
      Cheers Rob

Nice modification, Rob. I'm skeptical of Far East import quality, but I've been surprised on more than a few occasions from your honest reviews (if it works well for Rob, it's got to be good!) 👍

Hi Daniel, you have to be selective. I always read the star reviews before ordering anything from BG. You should also look closely at the pictures and see what the machining looks like. Some stuff is excellent and some stuff is not so good. Generally it is OK and great value for money, compared to the established brand name stuff. Cheers Rob

I was looking at doing similar with a multifix qctp and the a0 fits as well but seemes really small but the a1 seemed like it wouldn't leave enough space to be able to back out and feed. I'm still thinking about it. I may check into one of these just to be able to use larger tooling as well and I'm sure I'll move up to a 10 inch and use the a1 multifix on it so money spent today for future plans, lol

I like the extra stickout on mine, gives me a bit more reach.

That can be a good thing if you have lead screw covers (which reduce travel). Cheers Rob
