Thanks for the detailed review of this Indian made QCTP............Many years ago, in the late 50's, I served my apprenticeship on the mines in South West Africa, now Namibia, and the lathe I was put on had this type of tool post and the rear tool post as well.
A few years later I built a small micro lathe and just had to make a QCTP for it too...........now long in retirement I have a 1930 Colchester Bantam lathe and I fitted it with the wedge type QCTP, but seeing the type in the video from India...... it's so appealing....... I'm highly tempted to go a bundle and re-equip the lathe with that type......it's true you can't have too many tool holders.
The wedge type of tool holder is extremely easy to make but this type in the video will take some making with hardening and grinding too......for the price from India just not worth the bother.

I agree!!! My free time is so valuable these days, time in the workshop is limited. Wasting my time making tool holders your can buy so cheap is not economical.

Crikey Brendan that was an expensive learning curve, you could sell the Myford one to offset the cost.
Anyway nice to hear from you, hope alls going well at your end😁😁
    regards

it was expensive yes but also the cheapest way..
if i bought 10 holders direct from myford they would cost £300
and I couldn't be sure thew would fit.
by employing this gamble of buying 10 the subsequently the tool post i ended up with 14 holders and the post for less than buying from myford.....
I am certainly going to look at selling the old post it will make the price even better! just not sure if i will sell all the holders with it also.... but it would be a shame to separate them being original myford and all.

You may find that the cam and piston in the indian qctp is made of very soft steel. You may be able to swap the internals from your Myford and get the best of both worlds.

Just a suggestion: (maybe you already know this) you want to dial back the compound rest as far back as possible when threading or taking heavy cuts. But it's always good practice to keep the compound rest retracted as it keeps it rigid. This way, it prevents chatter and does not run the risk of actually breaking off should your threading tool gets jammed at a shoulder or your cut off tool takes too much off at once. Better the cutting bit breaks off than your compound rest because the latter was sticking out too much.

      Thanks for the feedback.
It was set like that from a previous job.
I intent to replace it with a solid post as it doesn’t get much use in my little shop.

Great video. That's great that you got a bunch more holders, a bit of a shame you had to buy the toolpost too, but you could always resell the original, and the original holders? I like the T-slot fillers too. I need to make some plastic strips for my lathe like that. Thanks! Craig Edit: Oops - you already talked about reselling.

3d printed the T Slot fillers... helps on the cleanup.

Yes you may have spent a little more money but you now have 12 quick change holders plus the original holder and 4 more changers. If the origin equipment comes available at a fair price you can add a few more holders to the stack. To buy just 3 of the original holders would have cost more then what you have spent anyway so really you are better off.

    Hello Brendan,
Super useful video for anyone thinking of doing the same... I was thinking maybe the original toolholder could be used for holding a DTI/setup jobs rather than any turning related work. Thanks for sharing.
    Take care.
    Paul,,

Yes that is exactly what I was thinking. Use the originals for low pressure jobs.

I think the 1st thing i would have done was to mill a little bit off the piston face. Then they would have fitted. Just saying. Regards. steviegtr

Thanks for your comment. I considered it milling the pistons but thought I could sell the original and get some money back making it more cost effective.

Did you sell the Myford kit ?
I’ve just bought a Super 7, and I’d be delighted to purchase the qctp from you . . .
      Kind regards,

Take the ring off, or the lathe will do it for you.
