I spent my time going to college and doing everything I could to make myself a better person. I left prison March 10 1993. I started a small business and became a successful member of society. It can be done.

It's the 40 years he did in there. Kids make stupid mistakes all the time and don't think about how it'll affect them in the long run like going to prison. He's lucky to not be one of the guys who get sent back because they don't know how to live on the outside due to prison being all they know. I hope this video goes out to the teens who fly off the handle and pick fights at school or look to get into drug dealing or murdering someone out of passion because what this man is saying is true. He's lucky to be out 40 years later and not serving life. My prayers go out to him that he stays clean and doesn't do any of the stuff he did again. I think he gets it tho so I don't think he'll up back inside
I understand everything he is saying, my father spent 29 years in prison, I was 1 year 5 months when he was arrested & when he came home I had to teach him how to use a mobile phone, go to the bank, how to talk to people, order food at a restaurant without saying yes sir yes ma'am everytime he talks to them, but one of the most painful things is he secludes himself in his room because that's where he's most comfortable simply because it's a small space.. he goes to sleep at the same time, he's awake at the same time, showers at the same time, it's sad but I always say dad you do you, as long as your happy then I'm happy I love him to bits and I wouldn't change him or the situation for the world
I actually agrees the hella good documentary style production. And I like how they took it very serious and there was no jokey jokes. It just starts off.
How can they expect someone to come out after 40 years, and them end up homeless, and expect them not to break the law to survive? We need to do more for people in this position. Maybe have some program to give them a running start and chance to make it.
bojangles jackson the 3rd what good is that kind of thinking for society? Why set these people up to fail, again? In the process they can hurt a completely innocent person. Then what? Oh well?
bojangles jackson the 3rd I get that. Trust me I do... and for many I would agree, because they did some horrible shit... But I know a few ex cons who had actually mild crimes, not violent or whatever, and coming out of prison is scary as hell. My point is... people need not be surprised at the re offending rate when someone comes out decades later to a world that is not what they knew. I’m not saying give them handouts, I’m saying give them guidance. A little kindness and compassion goes a long way. No one is perfect, and anyone who tries to act like they are, they are the worst of all. Everyone’s shit stinks.
Ruth Ruthie that’s my view. It IS just setting them up to fail. They just need some guidance and maybe some understanding and kindness. Kindness doesn’t cost a thing. I don’t know. My mom raised me to be a compassionate person. I rescue pitbulls. Abused, neglected, sometimes damaged Pitbulls. It’s similar... a kind word, some compassion can really go a long way to rehabilitate. Most criminals didn’t grow up in loving homes with guidance and love.
Danny has been locked away so many years, but when i listen to him, there is no hate or revenge, he speaks with a sensible and soft voice. I wish him all the very best.
They learn the con of talking to people and getting trust and sympathy from good people. If you talk to anyone that has spent lots of years in prison they learn the lingo and how to talk and look at people to make you trust what they say. Don't fall for his lies. He is a criminal and doesn't deserve sympathy at all. He is a beast. He said it himself.
Aw350m3 H3R0 homeboy still murdered outside and in prison, smiled at 17:24 when mentioning why he’s called beast. Sure he speaks properly, I won’t consider him a part of our society. Everyone wants killers to suffer a sentence, then show sadness when they see the prisoner make it out of jail to tell their story, a story he wouldn’t have had if no one wanted him locked up.
Imagine going to jail in the 80s or 70s and spending 40 years in prison. And then coming out, seeing how much society and the environment has changed, it's like traveling in a time machine for him I would assume.
Yea people probably live pretty inside prison because they don't take as many drugs/drik/smoke as they would do on the outside and it's also healthier than living in a busy city with a lot of cars and stuff for 40 years.
I'm just a young guy from Oklahoma,,but I'd take him in my home if I came across him..I served 2 years for drugs and doing well now. Iv been clean 10 years but I live in a prison i built myself, I dont have friends, I wont date, or go out. Much love ! I hope he has found peace
This man would kill you for reasons that don't make any sense to you. Didn't you listen to anything he said?.... he is from a different world, i feel sorry for him, but i wouldn't trust him.... and he wouldn't trust you, EVER..... don't you get it?
I feel you .I push the good people away and now I got rid of my friends that I was running with trying to fix the good relationships I had but it's hard but it's better then going back to prison .good luck to you .

Jayson Nickelson , your gonna say he already paid for what he did but if he murdered your family 40 years wouldn’t be good enough for you and you know it. It’s in his blood that’s how he’s lived all his life, you can’t take a wild wolf out of his wilderness and expect him to be tame in a new environment . It don’t work like that
Dame la luz Klk nobody has the right to judge anybody. god will on judgement day it’s not up to us how and how much he gets punished so yeah he did his time and nobody will change my mind about judging him because I stay true to my beliefs I’m a Christian btw although I would be pissed and want to kill him if he killed any of my family but I would not act on it
I’m a female , I did 3 years in Prison of a 6 year sentence, I fought my case 13 months in pre-trial and did time in 2 institutions before being sent to fire camp where my sentence got reduced to 35% time . Those places change you forever , it’s a dark world with angry evil , envious people. (My crime was mortgage fraud) so a square like me would get picked on and I had to fight and get respect (so I’m not seen as weak) . One of my cell mates was a lifer who had been locked up since 1989 , I slept with one eye open because she always said evil shit. I can’t imagine being locked up so long and not losing your mind. This guy is strong minded and I admire his strength. Even though he did do something that put him in prison, I’m no one to judge . Being in prison is truly worst punishment imaginable. Much respect ✊ Danny! I pray you are doing well 🙌🏼💖. You look great btw . Hope you find happiness in your freedom . The first thing I did was go to In-N-Out 🍔🍟🥤 when I got out
You might be do the fraud in terms to save your family . And you did your punishment . Some people have been blessed by 2nd chances & you got it . So live your life in peace & use the feeling to always taking care of others 🤍
Sophia hi I too was locked up 12 years and worked my way to minimum custody and got to be a wild land fire fighter in arizona hope your still doing well.
He has a humility that only a man who has seen too much can possess. I hope he spends the rest of his years free and finds purpose on the outside. He deserves a second chance...
You can see the pain in his eyes everything he’s experienced has been hell an you can tell that this man is a genuine human who regretted all the wrong doings he has done in his life tho he had no choice like he said he’s a survivor
For men like this, real freedom after prison can be really difficult to define. This is raw and unsensationalized. Giving men like this a voice should compel us to think about whether it is justice or retribution we want from our corrections system. Really top notch job!
I was speaking more broadly about what our intentions ought to be for the justice system, and also what we collectively mean by justice. Are we trying to rehabilitate prisoners who will eventually re-enter society, or are we simply doling out punishments? I think what we end up with are prisoners bereft of hope and any lacking necessary character and skills to avoid criminal activity after prison. They leave prison as prisoners, and not free people as we might be inclined to think.
The thing is the ideas here are not mutually exclusive; Ideally we want Justice, Retribution, and Rehabilitation. Justice for the family or person wronged in the crime, Retribution in that you are punished for your crime, and rehabilitation in the sense that you learn from your mistake and don't commit further crimes. Now that's an oversimplification I've given here, but you get the gist.
You survived ! If you can survive that! "You can do anything brotha." Anything is possible for you! Live. Love and be well moving foward brotha! Praying for you to receive everything you missed out on in life. Its your time to shine.

Seeing how gentle he is the way he speaks and communicates. But then knowing he did 40 years in a maximum security prison. You can tell he’s a survivor who’s just been through way to much. War and Prison for probably like 50 years. I hope he finds peace.
He has a big heart, and gone through hell. I hope he still continues in self education and may help others avoid prison by his experiences. God bless my brother.
I agree VK. I'm an ex con, with 3 sentences, totalling 3 years. I went through the Scottish Prison system at 17. I ended up in HMP Barlinnie, Glasgow. I thought it system was fuct but the US system is disturbing!! Much respect & best wishes Midnight 😌
This guy is a great communicator and shows a lot of intelligence. He seems to have been able to convert his prison experiences into genuine insight and conveys them clearly to the listener. Just goes to show...a lot of smart, bright people all over the world that have the potential for all kinds of achievements and satisfaction, but end up on a dark path and pretty much shut 99% of the doors on themselves. At this point, Danny seems to have found a certain kind of peace, in spite of the life-changing brutality of the prison he was in. I'm sure life remains difficult, but respect for where he's at now.
I really appreciate this video. I only did 4.5 yrs and this is a real reminder of why I don't want to go back. It's hard though to adapt to a free society because people out here are disrespectful. You want to hold them to the penitentiary standards of respect but just know they call the police on you and since you are already a felon the shit is going to fall on you. I feel bad for this man but he is alive. So there is still hope. God bless him
I feel you dawg I just got on a bus full of school kids yesterday and they were straight up disrespectful to me just running their mouths showing off to eachother I wanted to choke the main 1 to death but I'm an immigrant and my case is still going on, if I ever get into trouble I'll be deported back to the middle East It's a mastery to control yourself bcuz you know the consequences will be super bad for you not for them Make sure u stay outta trouble
I work as an inner city ER nurse. When these guys get out after 20-30 years they don’t know how to function & they often end up in the ER within the first couple weeks for one reason or another. I have had the opportunity to have long one on one conversations with several of these guys. It’s fascinating!!! & terrifying. You can’t just walk up & put your hands on them like you would any other patient. They are programmed to perceive that as a threat. It’s surprising how willing people are to share their experiences if you treat them with respect.
This dude reminds me of my pops who was in and out of prison in the 70's and 80' in NYC but eventually died in 1990. The prison and street life has no happy endings. You either die or become an old broken and lost soul.
Absolutely. And its a shame how many young people involved in criminal activity, haven't figured that out. The street life, is nothing but a waste of life. And often a short one.
It’s as true as it gets. Sadly, I’ve got friends and family doing life upstate that I will never ever see again. My mom’s good friend (family fried) has been in for the past 10 years in a level 6 max as well in solitary. He is locked up for 23 hours a day. He is doing life. Prison is killing him. He’s really sick, doesn’t sound at all like himself, and I can only imagine how his head is feeling. The worst part of it all, he has a little girl who isn’t even ten yet, and she has only met her daddy once.
AquariaGeek it’s real out there man. Can’t imagine being locked up or in solitary....one of my boys caught a case in 2007 when he was 27. They got him down for 36 years....crazy
Crystal Croft He may do well for himself and friends , if any.. he'll never be able to get over the mental bull shit he's went through, 40+ years in prison. That's just fucked up. He's barely lived.
I wish him well and I hope that he can live life and enjoy it. I just know from living with and around people who served much less time that it is challenging. But I have nothing but positive energy going his way!
I feel a tremendous amount of sympathy for this man. I would like to help him and be his friend. Its abundantly clear that he paid the price for his crime and truly deserves a second chance.
@Phuong : What if....? He did his time, didn't he? You have changed with age, and I am sure he has, too. The real problem with our penal system is that it all too often alter people into something worse instead of trying to rehabilitate them. It should not take place in a civilized country like America.

how about when doing things that could lead u to prison is your only way out? what if no one opened a door for you to feed your family? would u stay at home watching your family starve? i would kill for my family.
I wanna know more about Danny. His life seems so interesting and rough. Like ik hes older but are his parents still around? What ever happened to his uncle from prison? Does he have any communication with his family? What are his plans for his future? How was his childhood? Did someone in his family die while he was incarcerated and was he able to attend the funeral? Was he together with his baby mama while in prison? If so did he make the choice of letting her go and living her life or did she leave him because of so many years?
I've personally never heard of anyone being allowed to get out to attend a family funeral. When your inside life goes on outside. All those Christmas, thanksgiving, birthdays, kids grow up, parents and family die, meanwhile you rot away your youth. It's just reality of prison. I only was in a few years but it was a life changing experience and an eye opener
I hate people judge someone like Danny. I hate they walk away cuz of his tattoos. If I was a business owner and had the chance to grab coffee with him, I'd give him a job. He seems like someone I would genuinely enjoy talking to. Peace and love Danny, good luck on your journey

They won't do that, prison is big money business. Why would they give little children heads up,when they need generations after generations in prison, inorder to make money. This globe is a prison globe period.
If this was even true this was in the 70s when they wanted inmates to kill each other and had been introducing crack to interracial neighborhoods you can blame the government for that just so you know Miss innocence prisons not that way today!

For men like this, real freedom after prison can be really difficult to define. This is raw and unsensationalized. Giving men like this a voice should compel us to think about whether it is justice or retribution we want from our corrections system. Really top notch job!
Charles Wróbel yeah but what do you mean? Like if cause problems you got jail simple
Charles Wróbel I agree 100%. It is sad and actually makes me angry in certain cases.
I think punishment is definitely a component of justice.

If this was even true this was in the 70s when they wanted inmates to kill each other and had been introducing crack to interracial neighborhoods you can blame the government for that just so you know Miss innocence prisons not that way today!
He deserves this
I actually think his guy is very articulate. After so many years living in a constantly violent environment, his words are incredibly educational, sensible, and philosophical.
He's actually somewhat of a respectable and intelligent guy.

@Pythus Regius sound like a typical inmate. You think i haven't heard that say a million fuckin times in 20 years? Read a book numnutz.
Shoot Joe a message, let him know you wanna give your side. I'd love to watch it. There's always two sides to every story, and I love a good story.
I have hope for you Danny, I see a spark in your eyes & I think you can still find alot of joy & love in this world. You could still have 40 more years on the outside & I wish you the best.❤️
This guy needs to get with a publisher when and if he can to write a book about his life and experience to maybe help others who going through the same thing
I don't think he can afford to write a book. Writing a book takes time, and time is money; money that he does not have. It would be awesome if he did write a book, but I just don't see that happening given the circumstances.

Nobody could walk a mile in your shoes but thank you for telling us your story. It opens our eyes to see people that have gone to jail in a different light. Dont judge a book by its cover. I kinda felt the same way before retiring from the military of 23yrs, I felt like I didn't fit in the world anymore. I can't imagine over 40yrs, he was in prison almost as long as I been alive and completed military career. Lisa, let me clarify for him, when you serve time, especially long sentences you will move multiple times to different level facilities, that being said it’s very possible to not remember where you met someone within a ten year sentence. He wasn’t saying he didn’t remember where he served time, he’s saying he didn’t remember which facility he met him at.
this is the first time that I see a men speaking boldly and realistically about prison of life thank you for sharing your experience hopefully they young Generations will not make that mistake God bless you I hope to see you in heaven

Prison is a horrible place as told by this guy, and I'm going to try my hardest not to end up inside. I hope Danny is doing well in the outside.
He looks so young because of being inside in a concrete cell most of the time has protected his skin from the sun, the whole reason we get wrinkels and stuff is because the sun damages our skin cells and over time the damage adds up.
and no pollutiion, car exhaust, fine dust and stuff
But he does smoke?
Your not aloud to smoke in prison so its harder to come by, i'm sure he smoked some but not often.
Experimental Fun it’s different in all prisons
And the tattoos on his forehead make it look like he has hair. llllooollll
This guy so tough man, his mental is bulletproof
