    The 32X cancelled library seems better than the 32X actual library. I guess the only thing Sega forgot to put on the 32X was a brand new Sonic, a Streets of Rage game of some kind, and maybe a Shining Force or Phantasy Star RPG or both or any RPG for that matter.

      Knuckles Choatix was good, but I think a new Sonic sequel would have been a better move for Sega. Had they released a Sonic 4 exclusively on the 32X as a launch game I think that alone would have sold a lot more units.

      @@pauldavis5665 Knuckles Chaotix is certainly better than any Sonic game sega put out since then until Mania, but it was a little half baked. If they would've had more time to finish the levels, and maybe developed a single player mode that didn't use the combi-ring, it would've been fantastic, instead what we got was good but not as good as the 16bit games.

      As as a youngster? I always heard that Atari Jaguar had a really good version of "Alien Vs. Predator" & I considered buying the system on the strength of that title alone. I would've been HEARTBROKEN to get the First Person Shooter, not the Capcom game, even though the other is very good also!

      I'm also really glad I never paid money for the Genesis version of Michael Jackson Moonwalker back then. The arcade was also an awesome beat 'em up! I expected that to be the "Genesis" vesion. The home version was a super lame platformer with nothing going for it! I'm shocked they didn't adapt the Arcade version of the game as best Genesis could do.

    It can also be played on the Xbox1.
    I've played the Saturn version and have used the AM2 emulator to run the real arcade ROM on a high end pc. In my opinion the Xbox arcade port is as good as its gets short of actually having the real deal quarter eating machine in your living room.

    The thing with the 32X is it had little to no reason to be. The Saturn, though rushed out, was something that had a very short time before release, and SEGA had flooded the market with their products by then - Mega Drive, SEGA CD, GG, and SMS were _all active!_ and the Saturn was a few months' time away from arrival.
    Then comes an add-on... for a console that _already had_ an add-on (that gave it better benefits than the 32X itself offered).
    And then you remember that the Mega Drive had a Virtua Racing port that moped the floor ten thousand times with any 3D game the
    SNES had, and consider you could use that tech to develop other blazing fast 3D games.
    What the hell would you want the 32X for, then?
    Everything that was meant for it, or released on it, should've been left to CD, SVP or Saturn...
    All these cancelled games tell, however, that there were a lot of devs willing to bet on it. Shame.

    I would say the PS3 and 360 Digital ports of Daytona USA do meet/exceed the quality of the original coin-op since it's a port of that version with some extra content and no compromises and featuring the original graphics and music. Only thing missing would be the Arcade version unique control setup but that's a given.

      Yeah, you'll wanna snag a download before it becomes delisted or the services for these legacy consoles is terminated. It's pretty neat, it has a new Karaoke mode where you can just drive freely while the song lyrics are displayed on screen, worth it for that alone.

    5:38 I think you actually mean the other Batman Forever game, which was developed by Probe Entertainment. Because according to Wikipedia, GamePro reported that a 32X version of that game was present at E3 1995, but it went unreleased.
    Also, the unreleased enhanced port of Boogerman makes me think of Earthworm Jim: Special Edition (Sega CD) and Earthworm Jim 2 being ported to the 32X as well, even though nobody managed to make or announce those games for the system.

I look forward to more of the series though it's also with a bit of sadness as Sega truly shot itself in the foot cancelling everything but the Saturn as the Genesis, CD and 32X all had more life to live.

  • @Silanda

    Something to bear in mind about the Duel demo and Mean Machines is that IIRC their sister magazine, which was the official Sega Magazine, published arcade shots of some games claiming that they were the Saturn or 32x versions (Virtua Racing and Daytona, for example). Mean Machines may have published them too, but I can't remember. Magazines of the time were quite good at either misunderstanding or misrepresenting what they were being shown.
    Judging from the small, low quality clip available, that Duel demo's animation was extremely impressive for the time. IMO too impressive for building actual game from at the time.

  • @DraculaMarth
    @DraculaMarth 3 роки тому +2

    The reason AVP development never moved to another platform was apparently because 20th Century Fox hated the game. There was this Twitter thread by the former Capcom artist Akitomo about how western comics influenced Capcom games and he mentions that Capcom kept asking 20th Century Fox to let them port the game up until 2000, but they kept refusing. He speculated that they didn't like that it was an action beat-em-up instead of a scary horror game. Of course, in 2019, they relented and Capcom put it on the overpriced arcade stick, but I think 20th Century Fox was just doing whatever they wanted at that point before The Mouse swallowed them up.
    Additional fun fact: Linn Kurosawa was created because they wanted to include Machiko from the comics but only had the rights to characters from the movies.

    The Jaguar also had far more announced games than games actually released. Of course the Jaguar, like the Dreamcast, has a very active aftermarket and homebrew community. I've never seen any aftermarket releases for the 32X. Instead of releasing another Genesis/MD Mini, I'd love to see Sega release the Neptune, a planned console that would play all Genesis and 32X cartridge based games. Prototypes and reproductions exist. There have been several aftermarket releases for the Genesis/MD. I have 4 or 5 in my collection.

    As a lifelong Sega fan, this is the most depressing video ever. The mistakes committed by Sega's management around the time of the 32X's release were grievous and numerous to the point of being timeline-altering, all but ensuring the company's eventual demise. I legitimately believe that if things played out differently, Sega would still be a player on the console market today. Makes me wish I had access to a time machine.

    I owned a 32X, I got it at the end of its life cycle for dirt cheap with Virtua Fighter as a pack in game. I had a few other games such as Star Wars and Doom.
    In my opinion, Sega should have rode out the 32X another year so more games could have been finished and released. It is NOT a bad system, despite the poor reputation it has. It just has a lackluster library of games.
    If you can find out on eBay or somewhere for cheap, get it. I wish I still had mine just for the sake of nostaglia.

    Damn man I had no idea that the 32X had so many cancelled games. I wonder how much money was collectively spent on all of these unfinished projects? Crazy to think about. And I wonder how the stack of cancelled 32X games compares with other systems. I would imagine it to be higher and maybe in line with something like the Dreamcast and the Jag. Nice video, sir! And I loved Zero Tolerance on the Genesis!!

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  6 років тому +1

      An unreal amount of money. The decision to end the Genesis and 32X wasn't well thought out. It not only hurt Sega, but also every company that had invested their future into these systems. I'm not done with my research just yet, but there are about 3 canceled games for every game that released. More important I believe is the amount of time the system was being supported vs the number of games that released vs what got canned. A system like the Jag was on the market for nearly 3 years yet has close to the same number of games as the 32X.

    Thats why homebrews exist my friend, TONS of "unreleased" 32x games that you can now get thanks to homebrews and roms/emulators etc. it's to the point now where you can literally get them in physical carts now. 32x, n64, hell even dreamcast. Pretty much any retro console now, has homebrews. n with the amount that are out there, like i said, TONS! from people making there own games from legit scratch, to people taking ports and re-porting them (so, as an example" daytona usa, was for saturn but pretty much has same specs to be ran on 32x, in other words it's been ported to 32x and you CAN no get it on the 32x) long as there was some rom released or some prior port and someone cleaver enough to re-port it, homebrews have pretty much saved retro consoles. it used to be a thing of like, retro consoles were solely for collecting and maybe to scratch a nostalgia bug (if you will) now-a-days with all the homebrews, it's actually like buying a "new" game but for your old system, it actually gives the system more meaning now and more life, and the library of games just keeps growing, yah they aren't "official" games, but seriously who the fuck cares, long as they can run/function on the console itself (or obv emus if you don't want to go that route) then it's a win win and at the end of the day homebrews really do just give extra life to retro consoles, i have such a shit ton of homebrews for my dreamcast it's not even funny from ports like half life, to fan made games that are just 100% from scratch by the person, the list is endless. Just recently i Picked up the Goldfinger64 cart for the N64 and have already had quite a few people pass by it and want to play it, every time, it's the same reaction "I DIDN'T KNOW THEY MADE A GOLDFINGER GAME FOR N64!" lol because they didn't my friend that's the power of homebrews. long as there are dedicated people out there continuing to port things/create new things, homebrews are endless and you can literally start and entirely NEW collection of games for your retro console. it's a beautiful thing. The 32x library isn't as small as everyone wants to keep crying about. the OFFICIAL library may be but that's just because you don't know about homebrews then. suggest looking into them and you'll see the 32x collection is actually quite strong.

    1:30 "The NES classic California Games"? It was originally created for the Apple II and C64. Here's a list of the platforms it was ported to: Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Apple IIGS, Atari 2600, Atari Lynx, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, MSX, NES, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Sega Master System, ZX Spectrum. I.e - everything at the time.

I never even knew until I was an adult that California Games was released on other systems because I had only seen it for the NES. So to me, it was an NES classic being it's the platform everyone owned it on. Is there any documentation around the 32x port of AvP? I ask because Capcom didn't support the Genesis very much, releasing only six games. But the port of Punisher was done not by Capcom themselves, but Sculptured Software, which makes me wonder if they were working on the AvP port as well...

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  6 років тому +2

      Unfortunately, at this time there isn't. We know what games they had in development for the system (Street Fighter, AVP, and Darkstalkers) and that's about it. It's a real shame because I love AVP, in fact, I played through it with my son last Friday. It's still an amazing game I wish more people could experience.

      Capcom could've actually been releasing near perfect ports of their arcade titles. If anyone could've unlocked the true power of the 32X besides Sega, it would've been Capcom!
      AVP would've been a crown jewel for the 32X. And I'm almost certain the Street Fighter title in development would've been Super Turbo. Capcom could've righted the wrongs of the Genesis port of vanilla Super. It looked and sounded terrible. I did NOT see nor hear 40 Megs of assets in that release. It felt like a Western developed port (future research for that one!).
      I was a HUGE Darkstalkers fan and would've bought a 32X just for that one alone.
