And there are Genesis exclusives such as Duke Nukem lol.

Yep not just graphically but the sound as well. Those old arcade super scalers had sound that surpassed Genesis but were perfect for 32X sound chip. Afterburner and Space Harrier sound arcade perfect. Outrun and Power Drift would have too. Some reason I like the idea of all the layers playing off a chip rather than an audio cd like Saturn.

I mean, I understand it if you like the 2 virtua games, knuckles chaotix, kolibri, tempo... but you know... Very few decent games IMO, and I've tried them all. interesting choice of "favourite console of all time" to say the least! well, not that it's a bad choice, no, but the 32X is quite an overlooked hardware and its library is rather small. but it has some interesting specs and the selection of games it got is far better than, say, the Amstrad GX4000 or the NEC SuperGrafx which were full new consoles by the way while the 32X is actually an add-on it's surprising how good 32X games are on average considering the system's very short commercial lifespan, the development process must have been madness at times! but well, I do own a 32X and it has a healthy amount of quality games like space harrier, after burner complete, star wars arcade, virtua racing deluxe, virtua fighter, stellar assault, tempo or kolibri. I just wish that it lasted a bit longer on the market as I would have loved to see the planned castlevania or that 3D X-men game coming out!

It also managed to develop an unique port of Street Fighter II for the Sega Master System, approved by Capcom, stored on 8-Meg carts. Well...the company was quite agressive in its commercial practices and it offered game releases simultaneously to north american versions, holding their own licensing as you reminded; so how the 32x version of Barkley Shut Up and Jam 2 could be reviewed - it was weird but Tec Toy was very proactive in their practices and probably the game magazine obtained a hands-on preview cart from inside the company itself, as most media companies and game industry main sites usually were based on the same two large cities, São Paulo or Rio, so they kept very close contact with each other. Also, brazilian game magazines themselves were highly competitive and wanted to be always the first to report the new releases. You know, it’s kind of like when we got demakes from the SNES or Genesis to the Master System or NES. Not always the same game. Then again, we do have a number of examples of games appearing on both systems and the result is often better than expected. If I remember correct, the original game was just Die Hard 3. It wasn’t expanded until later on so who knows what a 32X version would have contained.
That's true, though I often forget that the 32X really was capable of some decent 3D rendering for the time. Because there was so few games on it though, we may never know the limits of what it was capable of. @@Jenovi

Thanks for the info. I never really knew the history of most arcade games, I was just aware of the more common games. I'm not sure now where I saw it, but I think it was in a small arcade in a local mall. I just remember being impressed with the 3D visuals. From that time on, I just assumed that it was released in the U.S. like most other games. Seeing ports for various systems reinforced that idea.
Good stuff. You got a sub from me. Die Hard Trilogy was one of my favorite Saturn games. Also, Power Drift is available on the Sega 3D Classics compilation for the 3DS. Looks great in 3D.
Is there any chance of 32x software being released in the future? The 32x is seeing a bit of a renaissance of late, now would be the time right? Or is there some sort of odd programming/hardware quirk that prevents this from happening?
Okay, I'm really sad about Outrun and Power Drift., I would have loved to have gotten an almost arcade accurate version of Outrun and Powerdrift for the 32X
Technically Natsume was making a Genesis game called Lufia, but for whatever reason they stopped and made it for SNES instead. The beta for the Genesis version is still floating around the internet.
Wish the 32X would have stayed around longer, think of all the arcade perfect ports plus all the all new and original 32-bit 2D sprite based games that could have came out on it.
There’s more 32X stuff coming, I’m working on a video about the system now. As far as unreleased goes? There’s maybe 2-3 games left on the list and it’s just rumors that look to have no merit. Besides, all contact I’ve attempted regarding them has hit a brick wall.
Unless I'm seriously losing my mind, I'd stake money I've played Power Drift in the arcade here in the UK, most likely at Southend on Sea, where there's a load of arcades.

Oh I know. There were some great straight to console games like Silpheed, Soul Star, Flink, Shadow Squadron 32X, Blackthorn 32X, Mortal Kombat 32X, NBA Jam 32X, Knuckles Chaotix etc... but Sega really should have pushed their arcade perfect titles and bringing arcade titles (like the version of Golden Axe and Final Fight on the SCF) and do the same across both of their Genesis add ons. And then more 3rd parties may have hopped the band wagon like Technosoft and CapCom etc. I mean CapCom DID but could have done so much more... they may not have 'new' games for the time but it could have helped spin the creative wheels before the polygon wars really started which came pretty darn quickly after the 32X came out with thanks to greats like Virtua Fighter & Virtua Racing (32X was the better than the Saturn). But heck I loved even the 32X version of Doom! Of all things too!
It seems like not a lot is known, but was Off-World/Off-Road Interceptor a 32x/CD game? Seems like it would have to be. Also, fun fact: the smart asses dunking on the FMV in that game are none other than Doug Benson and Brian Posehn. Also, I definitely had a Power Drift cabinet in my local arcade. Could have been an import, I guess, but as I remember, all the marquees, etc, were in english.
The preview came from a pre 32X launch show. I'm assuming summer CES '94 by the other games previewed. No word if it was a cart of cd. Very cool to have a Power Drift cab you can experiance. The game is all in English as is the cab. I looked over a bunch of stuff and there was a US sales flyer, but it appears that it never released here. Then again, maybe it did and only a few were ordered?
@@Jenovi It was a dope cabinet, with the moving car, similar to After Burner. It would seem weird that my local Aladdin's Castle would cough up the dough to import a huge cabinet like that, but maybe since it was so out there, they thought it would bring in a lot of cash.
It must have been expensive new. I read a review in an arcade magazine from the 80's that doubted the machine could find success in America due to the cost of purchase and what the arcade would be required to charge if they hoped to break even.
Excellent video. Sega made an almighty mess back then. The 32X was cut off before it had a chance, and the Saturn was poorly designed to compete with the PlayStation & N64. Both could have been handled so much better. Damn Sega was already on a death spiral.
Hard to imagine DHT or ORI running on the 32X but I think the rest is doable. Outrun, Star Control2, Wild Guns, and Power Drift on 32X would have been cool but we had to make room for Brutal: Above The Claw, Motocross Championship, and Digital Pictures re-releases. ^_^ :P Rocket Science had some interesting ideas but yeah no big hits so hard to keep funding them.
@@Jenovi You think so, funny enough Artech Digital Entertainment made Dark Castle on Genesis so I kind of have my doubts. ^_^ I tried to be patriotic with them being Canadian and all but I really couldn't find a release that I liked on any platform. :\ Fight Night(1985) was alright I guess, the Friends trivia game maybe, Cygnus Destroyer convinced me Crystal's Pony Tale had some merits. :)
@@loganjorgensen I did a review for it on this channel if you really want to hear how I feel about it. The long and short of it is the game's very fun and has a ton of potential. The biggest issues, it requires the manual to fully understand how the controls work, collisions issues are a problem, and you need to understand how to start the race because there is a bug that ruins races at the start. A lot of small issues that if corrected would have netted a decent game. I've never played Pony Tale, but up until the Cygnus video, I thought it was a My Little Pony game.
@@Jenovi Watched you video on MC, that's fair about the controls or the huge number that dump on it unfairly. It's a curious graphics engine, mixing 2:1 and 1:1 pixel rendering, plus the backgrounds are JPEG encoded which you don't see much of before GBA which is an innovation even if the compression was too high washing the images out. Me too on PT, thought it was a MLP game. ;)
If Sega had released the 32X 2 years before and released many arcade games on it such as super street fighter and contra or Castlevania and other new titles who would take advantage of the superior graphics and animation, the 32X would have been a very collectible and incredible console. It would be amazing if new developers try to adapt CPS1 and CPS2 arcade games or make new games for the 32X !
Jenovi yea probably, if they made it even 1 year before this 32x add on could probably beat the SNES or even the NEOGEO due to it's cheaper price. I still don't know why this game tho, because while sports games are popular here, Basket Ball isn't a highly popular sport here like in USA.
I appreciate you making this post. The game one of the worst basketball games on the system too. All I can think is there was some dirt cheap licensing deal offered.
Very well scripted and filmed video. Good detailed information stuff i didn't know until watching. Wild Guns looks like a great game for the SNES. Cheers!
Thanks!
Great video! Too bad we didn't get more Sega's Super Scaler games on 32X, it would've been nice to compare them to the original arcades and Saturn ports. Note: Casper was also released on 3DO and PSX.
I fully agree. That Casper game came out for a tooooon of systems. I’m not sure they are all the same, but my experience was meh.
@@Jenovi Casper also came out for GameBoy and SNES but they were completely different games. This particular version of the game you showed was released for 3DO, PSX, Saturn and Game Boy Color which was a scaled down version of it.
Awesome vid man thanks for posting 32x could have had some mad 80's and early 90's arcade sega and capcom ports made i know the Japanese sega Saturn has a lot i own most lol man i miss the 90's
Thank you.
Ohhh man... ports of OutRun and Power Drift would have been so amazing. It may have even saved the 32X... OK, maybe not - but it still would have been amazing!
Great video as always !
Thank you.
These cancelled games sure are fascinating, though some of them, like Die Hard Trilogy, I have a hard time imagining running on 32X, but I suppose we may never know how good a port that could've been. I'd have loved to see that Sonic Sports game though. I never heard of that before.
@@Jenovi
Aren’t you down in southern Oregon? I’m in Portland
For many years, but I recently moved to Phoenix, AZ. Daughter is up in Portland attending school though.
So, is there no Sonic Sports official game case?
Unfortunately not.
The more cancelled Mega Drive&Mega CD&32X Games reveals to us, the more I get the heartbreaking😢
Great video. Love your content
Thank you KC, I really appreciate that.
I found out why doom for the 32X did not get a the inferno episode and how it lacks the BFG9000
Oh?
We need 32x Homebrew games.
Oh man. What I would give to see this happen.
Is it possible to download some of these unreleased, cancelled games ? Like...
7:04 *_Striker_* ?
4:54 *_Outrun_* ?
10:32 *_Wild Guns_* ?
No, there are only a handful that have been publicly dumped. Many more known to be held by private collector's, and even more with unknown fates.
10:55 You said "Wild Arms". Wild Arms is a PSone RPG.
Yes, the shame is real with this one. I made the box, wrote the script and I still talk about the amazing Wild Arms when it's not about that game.
Amazing video man! Keep it up! :)
Thank you Simon!
No problem! Thanks for making this! :)
I think sega should have gone down the snes route and made the 32x hardware in the megadrive catridges rather than the addon.
@TrueSinister well i dont know it was justt an idea
They kind of did that with the SVP chip and Lock-on technology . HistoricNerd has and excellent video discussing this.
Has to be sold separately. The VDP with vram lock on cart, CPU on-cart or lock on with ram or only cache and audio on-cart with cache or ram.
Dude, you need to collab with Sega Lord X. Your content and his together would be great!
Thank you for the videos so many good memories with Sega
The arcade version of Power Drift never got released outside of Japan? I don't remember when it was, but I know I saw a Power Drift arcade machine here in the U.S.
I really tried running info down on this and it appears the ones people have in North America are Grey Market machines. There are a couple different cabs (stand up, sit down, ext) but only one version. So the one released in Japan was fully in english with an english marque and art. It's not definitive, but there seems to be few orders generated due to the high cost of the machine and cost per play required to return investment. There was concern expressed about this in late 80's arcade magazines. I realize I could be wrong but more evidence points to a grey market release and not an official NA release.
Seeing ports for various systems reinforced that idea.
my man, nice!
Awesome video!
Thanks! Appreciate you guys stoping by and checking this series out.
32X could have actually been AWESOME if it had come out as the Genesis/32X combo machine and not the add on. I'm convinced of that.
We were so close to getting it.
@@Jenovi yup. It was mentioned to us in a meeting before the 32x launched. What could have been.
Would of thought the reason for Outrun not making it to the 32X was licensing issues with Ferrari
That never seemed to be an issue, even years later.
@@Jenovi Well they had to changed the look of the car sprite so it didnt look like a terrarossa in later version like the DC version
10:53 you call Wild guns "Wild Arms"
It's such a good game, I couldn't help but mention it. Sadly, not a 32X planned released. :D
Jenovi gets CAUGHT OUT by the Wild Guns/Wild Arms confusion. 😅
I was a Wild Arms fan before I was a Wild Guns fan. 😂
Wish the 32X would have stayed around longer, think of all the arcade perfect ports plus all the all new and original 32-bit 2D sprite based games that could have came out on it.
I wish more people could leak these prototypes, or atleast have the devs speak out of what they know and worked on
It's an unfortunate situation that means almost certain loss for many games as time continues to pass.
I hope more 32x episodes come out
There’s more 32X stuff coming, I’m working on a video about the system now. As far as unreleased goes? There’s maybe 2-3 games left on the list and it’s just rumors that look to have no merit. Besides, all contact I’ve attempted regarding them has hit a brick wall.
I got a Sega CD that year because we couldn't get the 32x to work. Know what I did wrong now but soooo glad i got the sega cd
Casper was also on PS1 in Europe.
And games SEGACD cancelled? Do you have video?
Unfortunatly not.
@@Jenovi ,thank you.
New Jenovi video:)
Thanks bud, appreciate you stopping by and congrats on 3,800 subs.
Great video thanks 👍🏻
Thank you for watching.
Unless I'm seriously losing my mind, I'd stake money I've played Power Drift in the arcade here in the UK, most likely at Southend on Sea, where there's a load of arcades.
Man! Playing basketball with Looney Tune characters??? Dang!
Another Unreleased 32x games? Is it my birthday? I want that Out-Run game it looks awesome and Die Hard Trilogy. It’s a shame the weren’t released.
😂 great comment. Made my morning Tim.
Powerdrift was available in arcades in Canada...i have it in my house

Damn, Wild Arms probably would be the reason to own a 32X right now if it had ever been released.
Agreed.
@Jenovi Wild Arms, a different game entirely from the game in the video; would have been incredible, if a bit hard to believe, on the 32X.
32x even with it's limited library is a good system. Why? Because half of those games I really enjoy.
Sega CD had so much more games, but it can't even touch some of the good ones on 32x.
It has a great library. It's really underrated IMO.
@@Jenovi Yeah, what it cost is lost to memory now, but I'm sure it was 75¢ or a buck.
Power drift looks like one of those beta MKDS levels. I.e. "rainbow road" or something that sorta looks like it.
It kind of does, I wonder if it was inspiration for those levels as Power Drift released in '88.
Excellent video.
Sega made an almighty mess back then. The 32X was cut off before it had a chance, and the Saturn was poorly designed to compete with the PlayStation & N64.
Both could have been handled so much better. Damn Sega was already on a death spiral.
If only Sega didn't do that stupid early surprise Saturn launch, maybe we could've seen more of the 32X's full potential.
Man, I miss my 32x...
Have a hard time believing diehard trilogy would ever run on the 32x.
Blink once if you're being held captive and need our help
😂 Practicing for that possible time in the future when someone holds my eyelids open.
Power drift would have been great, or remake arcade games on 32x it had the power.
There was suppose to be a Darkstalkers as well but it never happened. That would of worked out on the 32X. 32X had a lot of potential, oh well.
YIPPEE KI YAY.
I would've loved to see Die Hard Trilogy on the 32x
Me too.
The Motorcross games isn't 1/2 bad. Another month or two of dev time and it would of been ok.
Me too on PT, thought it was a MLP game. ;)
Only if 32x came out years early....
Certainly, the tech was very new so I'm not sure it would have been feasible to release it sooner unless it was a dramatically different.
Jenovi yea probably, if they made it even 1 year before this 32x add on could probably beat the SNES or even the NEOGEO due to it's cheaper price. Pretty sure that it could handle an arcade perfect conversion of Street Fighter Alpha 2 or Final Fight . It would be awesome if some actual developers made 32X conversions of the new Megadrive/neogeo shoot them up titles
videos also nba jam, mortal kombat and many more
Man, you have to be a real rich gaming nerd, if you have your one stable and horses :D
Just live out in the middle of no where. Everything is dirt cheap when you don’t live in the city or close to it.
Now if only we had got Duke Nukem 3D on the 32X...
That would have been sweet.
Even Outrun was not on 32x that I was so disappointment
Hey this is great I have a 32x page on Facebook and I’ll post this for the guys to enjoy 😉. Have a great week
