Thank you for putting this series together. As a 32X owner since 1995, I've always been interested in this system. My interest in the console waned in the late 90s but by the mid 2000s I started digging into the history a bit. A great resource for info on unreleased games was The 32X Memorial, an old geocities site. It had box art and some background information for many titles. The site is no longer accessible in its original form but I believe it's archived. I'm not sure if all of the box art survives. I truly believe the 32X could have been successful. There were many late adopters of the Genesis who purchased in '92-'94 and beyond. Asking them (children and their parents especially) to shell out big bucks for the Saturn so close to their Genesis purchase was a tall order. We know the 32X is capable beyond what was released - remember, we really only saw 1st generation launch titles. How many consoles have spectacular launch window games? Anecdotally, I can say that I know of a few 32Xs that were sold just for Virtua Fighter. Virtua Racing, Afterburner, and Space Harrier are all stand-out arcade ports on the system as well. Given the strength of Sega's arcade portfolio, I believe the 32X could have been touted as the Genesis owner's home arcade console. Other Sega classic arcade games like OutRun, Outrunners, Power Drift, etc. could have been ported with focus on the current (mid 90s) crop of arcade games like Daytona, Virtua Cop, Sega Rally, etc. as well. It's nice to dream but with Sega spread so thin at the time I guess it would have never happened.
This is a beautiful comment that really mirrors my thoughts. I can hardly wait to put together a video covering the 32X and my perspective on the matter. You can still access that 32X website via the internet archive, but it’s a bit of a mess with not all pictures or box art surviving. The surviving ones are all low rez. It was good for the time, but the info isn’t entirely accurate. All the box art I show, I made for the video and have UHD versions of. If you need any, just holler at me and I’ll send them to you via Twitter.
@@Jenovi Thanks for the reply. I will definitely check your Twitter. Your series on the 32X mentioned many games I did not know about. I imagine there is more that we still don't know. Of everything covered I truly hope we see the likes of Heavy Machinery and the later builds of X-Men. It was also so cool to see the prototypes cartridges of Clay Fighter 2. That was one I was eagerly waiting for and it's good to know that it's out there. I remember seeing it available for preorder in the back of game magazines.
3DO doesn't have as much cancelled casualties as the Jaguar but there are some very notable cancellations such as Rayman (www.mobygames.com/game/jaguar/rayman/promo/promoImageId,363398/) Mega Man X3 (www.segasaturno.com/portal/rockman-x3-para-3do-existio-vt6210.html) and Mortal Kombat 3, so that would be a good start.
SoJ took SEGA's dominant 55% lead and micromanaged it back down to 3% in 1998, and finally to 0%. Why push over $2,000 in expensive hardware only to alternate between rushed/lazy ports and canceling them outright? Fool me once, shame on you....
The story of sonic x-treme is a pretty tragic one, and i've done my bit of research. Thanks for this series! Small fact for ya, those tech demo videos you see of sonic mars aren't 32x footage, from browsing around on the old senntient forums on wayback machine, I found out that those 2 were actually just animations made on an Amiga 3000 in deluxe paint animator. Keep up the good work and I cant wait for another x-treme documentary if you are doing it!
I had no clue, thanks for sharing. I have some other projects I'm flushing out currently, but I'm open to covering Sonic Mars in depth. The biggest obstacle for a video like that is getting the people involved with those projects to talk about the history behind them. Anyways, thanks for the feedback.
Yea I know how that is, theres a sonic mars script, and if you ever do get around to it sonic xtreme.com has some info that you could dig out, and some people would be glad to talk over there. and as far as sonic mars goes I found a bit of info here if your willing: (I dont know if you'll be able to see the link) web.archive.org/web/20121006232223/www.senntient.com:80/ubb/Forum13/HTML/000004.html
That Sonic's graphics are astonishing: it's incredibly close to the first Saturn/Ps1 3D games. Had Sega released the 32X and the CD as a single add-on in 1993 and actually invested in it, it would have cut the ground from Sony's feet and prepared the market for a somewhat later, but more mature, Saturn.
I don't agree on that. My idea is based on the hypothetical (but unlikely) possibility that Sega had the resources and technology to launch the Neptune in mid/end 1993, where it would have had no competitors at all and amazed the market. But in late 1994/1995, it would have been a disaster, almost a joke: even a blindman would choose the Ps1 over a Neptune (even more so if still cartridge based/capped). The best course of action was still never releasing a 32X add-on and focusing only on the Saturn, that too could change gaming history (probably for the better, given that high-quality titles are pretty rare nowadays, far removed from the standard Ps1 or Saturn game).
really great video. i need to watch your other parts in this series. the cover you used for the scottish open is really hilarious to me. man i would have loved another shinobi game. oh wow i never knew swagman was going to be on the 32X i really enjoyed that one on PS1
Holy shit! is that Phil Guerrero at 5:25? He was a zone host back in my youth on YTV in Canada. I'm not sure if this is the time he was still at the zone or if he moved on to the anti gravity room and gamerz, both of which were also YTV shows.
Damn good video, man! Thanks for yet another shout-out. Really would've liked to have seen Street Fighter: The Movie on 32X. I don't know why. I do have a bit of a soft spot for that game.
Sonic Games on 32X and Saturn are debatable. The idea behind those games were good but if you look closely you see that they would have flopped. Nonetheless graphic vise it looked astonishing for a 32X game. Shinobi Game sounded Interestingly and Soul Star looked pretty good aswell.
I used to have a 32X back in the day and thought the graphics and games were horrible, now in 2019 I still think the graphics and games are horrible...
If you had a Pseudo Saturn, you could burn it to a disc and play it right in store. You can make one yourself, just requires a Saturn and an Action Replay cart (Action Replay will no longer be an Action Replay when you finish.)
I'm honestly very depressed by all these games that didn't get released to the 32X. It's very surreal experience to see 3D games on playing on the Mega Drive and I can't help but imagine what could have been. Had Sega at the very least had they made Saturn games cross compatible with a 32X Mega CD combo and vice versa, it might have had a better chance. Especially against the PS1 and N64.
Jenovi I thought I live steamed it once but can't remember for sure and don't see it on my channel. But here is a pickup video where I got it, and talk about it and show some footage. Starts around 20 minutes. I haven't compared it to any other version, the only one I previously played was Cool Spot on Genesis so not really the same. ua-cam.com/video/144SDeohBVg/v-deo.html
32x was impressive for the time it came out when 32 bit systems were starting to come out i had it when it came out and later got ps1 but wish Sega would have done more with the 32x it gets such a bad rap because of lack of games
Race Drivin would have been interesting to see, but I feel it would have mirrored the Saturn release. Then again, Virtua Racing on the 32X is the superior version of that game.
@@Jenovi But then again, they would've tried to improve the 32X version instead of cancelling it after the Saturn version got horrible reviews. Maybe it also would've been a 32X hit.

Why was the Saturn version of Race Drivin' received so poorly? I've played it and thought it was pretty good. It seems to be a near perfect arcade port. Plus the addition of "real mode" which adds textures to the graphics is pretty cool.
Poor frame rate, low draw distance, clipping issues, and other problems all in a game that should have easily been arcade perfect. Especially considering the Saturn had arcade perfect ports of much newer software. The game was hammered in Japan and that's essentially the reason we never received a port.
@@Jenovi I played it again and didn't think it was too bad. Then I played the version on Midway Arcade Treasures 3 for Gamecube and yeah now I can see the difference! Also by the time the Saturn version was released in 1995 it really wasn't enough for a Saturn game. At the very least they should have had both Hard Drivin' and Race Drivin' on one disc. Preferably Stun Runner aswell. I still don't think it is horrible but yeah I see how it was pretty underwhelming for the Saturn.
@@MasterCastTV I've got a demo of the 32x version first level. Doesn't include the surface of the planet though. Actually- i know it was a very very early demo - the mega cd version looks better.
