How to Create Lines With Alcohol Ink Paintings

  • I created this video to show you how to manipulate and dry alcohol ink with a heat tool to create beautiful lines. The trick is to use lots of ISO mixed with your alcohol ink, you gotta start really wet to allow the color to flow back and forth without having it dry in place too fast. Hope you like this and thanks for watching! If you have any questions ask in the comments.

      @@MadelieneArt that is the problem. I spend the day today doing them erasing, it took me the whole day.
      My main question is how do we know when we do it well snd we don’t need to erase. Like what is the right way. I keep on watching videos hoping to find an answer.

    • @MadelieneArt
      @MadelieneArt  2 роки тому

      Honestly I do this too… I keep reworking and reworking and end up with something I’m not completely happy with. I’ve found it helps to step away from it then look at it later… even on another day. I think sometimes we’re so critical of our own work, it helps to take a step back and try looking at it with another lens. Most of the time I’ll come back to it and see something different 😃

      Hi thanks for the comment! I work in a very well ventilated room, two large windows to vent the air through, an air purifier and I have a respirator for when I am unable to open the windows due to weather. The VOC’s are definitely toxic if inhaled directly. If you can’t work outdoors please use a respirator mask or ensure a well ventilated room. Thanks so much for watching 💕

    • @brujita1712
      @brujita1712 Рік тому +1

      I mix my metallics with isopropyl in a small bottle and use them like that. About 25% ink to 75% alcohol. The only time I used it neat I just got blobs of ink.

    • @MadelieneArt

      Hi Connie! Good question! And yes it does everytime!! It’s quite a mess actually 🤪 I don’t bother protecting it as I’ll mount my painting on a wood panel and resin so you never see the backs 😃 you could protect it with painters tape!

      Hi! I try to keep the heat gun moving and not concentrate too much in one spot, I use a the low setting as well. I'm actually looking for a tool that only blows cold air to help with this process. The warping is inevitable with heat... I also use Grafix Craft plastic it's a heavier weight, it doesn't warp as fast as Yupo Paper :) thanks so much for commenting I hope this helps!

      @MadelieneArt  Рік тому +2

      Hi Heather! I use both Yupo and Grafix Craft Plastics and yes it will smudge if there are concentrated pools of ink or if reactivated with alcohol. You can use an acrylic sealant like Liquitex varnish just brushed on top or a spray like Kamar varnish to preserve the piece and avoid smudging, hope that helps 🥰

    I have question about safety. I understand alcohol ink fumes are toxic. Is the blending solution also toxic or is it safer than isopropyl alcohol? Is it safe to do this art in my apartment? Will the fumes affect other rooms or just the immediate area? I cannot open windows due to the excessive heat and I have no where else to do art. Do I have to give up alcohol ink?

    • @MadelieneArt
      @MadelieneArt  2 роки тому

      Hi Laurie, yes the blending solutions are still toxic they are made with alcohol but with added slip like glycerine. The fumes will definitely affect other rooms in the home/apartment. I’d hate for you to give up the art completely so my suggestion would be to wear a respirator type mask (although this wouldn’t help once you take it off if you’re unable to vent the fumes from your home) or invest in an air purifier that can handle VOCs for the room you do your artwork in and close the doors behind you. I hope this helps! Thanks for reaching out and thanks so much for watching!

    • @MadelieneArt
      @MadelieneArt  2 роки тому

      Hi Barb, my heat tool is not super powerful it’s 300w and I usually use it on the low setting however it still warps paper if I concentrate the heat in one area for too long. Keep moving it around to prevent this. Grafix craft plastic and Nara papers take much longer to warp so I gravitate towards those papers more. I also use an air brush tool more often (no heat) you can use a hair dryer on the cool setting too 🙂 Hope this helps
