    Having had two c-sections, I heartily agree that the binder is a game changer. I didn't get one with my first but got one with my second. With a combination of the binder helping me feel stable and moving as soon as they would let me, I recovered so much faster. (Also, a scheduled c-section is much easier than laboring for 40+ hours and then ending up in a c-section.)

    My husband says that insensitive skin is not a typo, it literally means, skin that is not sensitive to temperature changes, and therefore could get a burn. I would have also totally thought it was a typo.

    • @b2h316
      @b2h316 5 років тому +63

      I was just coming here to say this. A friend of mine has diabetic neuropathy and can't really feel anything that is hot or cold and could therefore, in theory, burn herself with one of these because her skin is too insensitive

      Yep! My girlfriend had a tummy tuck and says that she can’t feel anything in the area below her belly button or above her pubic line. If she puts a heating pad on that part of her stomach, she has no idea how hot it is.

    • @Castkett4ever
      @Castkett4ever 5 років тому +17

      As someone who suffered from hyposensitivity (I couldn't feel anything - now I am hypersensitive), I can confirm it's not a typo! They could also get a burn from cold, as they do not feel much. Sometimes they cannot feel stimuli such as being touched. So that was my little addition to the original comment, which was already explaining the subject very well!

    I've had 2 cesarians and my gallbladder out. Those belly wrap/binders are the best!!!!!
    Can I add something else? Those long arm grabby things that old people use to help you grab things off the floor. I'm not sure why but if you have stomach surgery, you drop everything!!! Mostly because how painful it is to bend over. Those metal arms with the grabber on the end is life saving!

    • @ABCScandalFanatic
      @ABCScandalFanatic 5 років тому +3

      How were you with stairs after your caesareans? How much help did you need? This is so random but I am having a large fibroid removed thru my abdomen which is a similar surgery. I don’t wanna stay with anyone but I live on the second floor. I’ll only need to go up one time - off work, no kids. I’m hoping to be able to get through this without having to bother anyone. Unrealistic?

    • @cecehbrewer
      @cecehbrewer 5 років тому +6

      @@ABCScandalFanatic I'm so sorry you're having that done. Unfortunately I needed a lot of help but maybe if you planned everything really well you could do it. I sure wouldn't opt for it though. I couldn't put my own pants on, I couldn't wash my legs in the shower, getting up and down from a chair just for a glass of water was awful. I ripped open my stitched for my gall bladder trying to go up stairs.
      The gallbladder surgery was worse than my c sections. With a gallbladder they balloon your stomach with air to do the surgery. Little scars but the healing time was awful and waaaay more painful. It took at least 2-3 weeks to not scream trying to stand up from the toilet. 5-6 to heal the incision.

      Scandal Fanatic I had a laparotomy to remove some cysts. The only difference between my surgery and a csection is that they didnt cut into my uterus. I lived in the basement floor of an apartment building and i had to go up and down every time i went out for a walk. When i got home from the doc, it was painful (the second and third days after surgery like that usually are) but after day 3 it got better and better. I had help the day i got out of hospital, but i was mostly left to my own devices with the exception of my walks. The important thing is to keep moving.

    It's been almost 29 years ago since my C-section, but hearing your little statement at the end just did me wonders! The fact that I had a section doesn't mean that I didn't give birth! So simple to think of now, but not so much back then! Also, I had accreta and had to have a partial hysterectomy. So at the age of 20 I felt like I was the worst mother in the world and not even a woman anymore. I couldn't get my baby to breastfeed because by the time I was well enough to see him he had already been on a bottle for about 10 days. I came home feeling like crap as a mother & wife. But I obviously did something right! He's alive and healthy and has a family of his own now! Have a great day!

  • @sarajuvey

    I was pushing for over 3 hours when my doc finally said my daughter's head was jammed and recommended a c-section. So I had one, and my daughter was fine. Went to recovery, had those air pump things circulating my legs until the anesthesia wore off, and then the nurse had me stand up to walk.
    I couldn't.
    I could support my weight but not walk, I couldn't lift my legs up. Nothing hurt, but I couldn't lift up my legs. Turns out I got nerve damage from her head being stuck in my pelvis for 3 hours and the pressure pinched the nerves going down both legs and viola! Nerve damage! I was in the hospital for 5 full days after the c-section, at which point on the last day I was able to shuffle very, very slowly with a walker down the hall to the car. But I couldn't step into it. I had to stand beside it and my husband literally lifted my leg up to put it in for me so I could sit then he lifted the other one in after. It was like... half paralyzed? I could stand, support my weight, and shuffle forward by swinging my whole leg from the hip while holding onto a walker, but I couldn't lift my legs up on their own. But again, nothing hurt.
    3 months later I could finally walk and get rid of the walker. Needless to say - this did not help me recover from a c-section! Although I can walk now and even run my gait is still off and occasionally I feel that something is just wrong with my hips/pelvis/legs, they are not the same as before the nerve damage. But I'm just thankful I can walk.
    What was surprising to me was the nurses, my OB-GYN, the physical therapist and neurologist they brought in when they guessed what had happened, everyone was surprised, like, "this almost never happens," type of thing. Yay! I got to be interesting to them! lol. But also, they said nerves, once damaged, are more easy to damage again, and if they were to be damaged again, they could be damaged worse/permanently. So, no more pregnancies for me! Even the weight of the pregnancy pressing down might mess them up, let alone delivery, and I'm not keen to have another c-section.
    I just feel lucky that I can walk, that doctors could figure out what happened and warn me about the possible negative consequences of getting pregnant again, and that I am not forced/pressured into having more kids.
    Just thought I would share because no one I have talked to has heard of this happening but I'm sure it has happened to more than me, maybe it could be helpful to others to know of this possibility. Have a great day!

      Ok I don't know if you'd care to know this and I know this comment is a year old but it just struck me. SO growing up on a ranch we had a few big cows that liked to birth big (and I mean BIG) calves. They'd struggle and usually it would be the heads or the shoulders that would get stuck and sometimes we wouldn't find the cow until she was many hours in. I learned from my grandfather that there are nerves that run along the pelvis that allow their back legs (and our legs) to move. The cow would become "Broke down" after a long labor with her calf and would be unable to walk. Sometimes the damage is permanent and they have to be put down, but a lot of times with the right amount of recovery time and physical therapy we could get them on their feet again. That usually required hoisting them in a strap by their midsection with a backhoe and walking them a few feet every few hours as well as providing more minerals to help them bounce back. It was a slow process but it's part of where I learned the risks to giving birth. I can't even imagine what it would be like to go through it myself as I've yet to carry a successful pregnancy but I imagine it must be a painful and slow process. Not to mention terrifying because of the paralysis, and a lot of times it's up to our bodies to decide if it's going to be a permanent disability or if we can recover. I just thought it would be cool to share some of my insight and learning through an agricultural standpoint.

    • @sarajuvey
      @sarajuvey 4 роки тому +3

      @@tearainey1 Thanks! I ended up being able to walk (mostly normally) again by 6 months after the birth. I do still sometimes get weird leg things/sensations that I have been told is from damaged nerves; basically the doctors say they don't truly understand the nervous system and that sometimes it heals itself completely, and sometimes it remains damaged for life to varying degrees. I'm just happy to be able to walk again, but yeah, it's crazy what can happen giving birth!!!

      @Zaltanayepamedanahuel Anasazihototodoliluyubodaway I didn't. Her head was jammed in my pelvis for 3 hours before they finally went to a c-section but I was all natural up to that point. It was 100% the fact that her head was stuck and pinched the nerves. When they did the c-section they remarked how her head was jammed so hard they had trouble pulling her out.

    My biggest piece of advice, follow your gut with postpartum issues. I had 3 kiddos via csection. My last 2 were wonderful. Csections and recoveries were flawless. By kiddo #3, I was vacuuming my house a week and a half later. I felt like with each csection, the recovery was easier & shorter.
    My first csection was not so hot. I was induced, labored for 36 hours and rushed to the OR for an emergency csection. Within minutes, baby was out and healthy and I was on the road to recovery. By 4 days post-op, I was home and told my mom "I think I have a fever". Took my temp and it was 102.5. We phoned my practitioners office and spoke with a midwife in the office. Her dx over the phone was a "milk fever", continue resting, nursing and alternate your oxycodone & ibuprofen accordingly. My mom knew what she meant by milk fever, apparently when your milk initially comes in, your temp can rise and you'll feel like you have a fever but usually..it's like a 99-100°temperature, not something as high as 102.5. I continued with the fever's for another 3 days. By 1 week post-op I found myself in the ER with a temp of 104.7, I ached so bad, the chills had me shaking terribly, I sincerely thought I was dying. They wanted to admit me for IV vancomycin. I was hesitant since I had a newborn, that was nursing. We agreed on 4 days of IV antibiotics through the hospitals infusion center. 4 days later, went for my last IV appointment and a follow up at my obgyn's office. He wasn't at all happy with my infection still..so, he sent me to the hospitals surgery center. There I met the same obgyn who delivered me and informed me, I'd have to go back into the OR so she could reopen the surgery incision, clean everything out and then leave the incision open..to heal from the inside out. The surgery was successful. I returned home with an open incision and home health nurses coming 3 times a week. Which then turned into me having a wound vac, to speed up the process (wound vac dressing changes are the devil! They hurt! If you experience this..take your narcotic about half an hour before your wound vac dressing change. It'll still hurt but not near as bad). I delivered my daughter April 21st 2012 at 10:41pm. I was not done with home health nurses until June. Whew! It was quite a recovery.
    So my advice for csection moms..trust your gut! Hindsight is always 20/20, I wish I would have trusted my gut and insisted on an appointment to see my obgyn. Nothing against midwives, I think they are great but they don't deal a lot with csections. I let a midwife try to diagnosis me over the phone and I shouldn't have. Because what was going on was not at all a "milk fever" it was Cellulitis and by the time I was getting it treated, I was a very sick woman. So if something seems off..you aren't crazy, make an appointment!
    Trust your gut, mommas! Please! ❤

      I had this with my 4th, and last, C-section. This landed me back in the hospital for an entire week and I was on IV vancomycin 23/7 alo g with 2 other antibiotics. I was only able to be off the IV for 1 hr each day, which I used to shower, and only of they aligned perfectly and did not delay the timing of my meds. Needless to say, I had to stop breastfeeding for about 2 weeks, but I pumped and dumped to keep my supply stable. It took a lot of struggle to get my son to bf since he LOVED the ease of the bottle over the breast.
      But yes, trust your gut, better safe than sorry. I only had a slight 100° fever...but it was still bad enough I spent a week as an inpatient. Mine turned out to be e.coli.

    I totally support the belly binder it was so helpful!! Also thanks for the “bonus” motivational speech! I hate the c-section stigma! I felt so badly when I had mine and I kept apologizing to my husband (he was just happy we were safe) but I had a fabulous nurse anesthetist who stayed with me longer than she needed to just so she could look me in the eyes and tell me to stop apologizing, I did what a good mom would do and made sure my baby’s safety came first. Her words in my head totally helped me cope with not having the delivery I dreamed of and feeling proud of myself in the long run. God bless everyone on L & D! They deal with the craziest spectrum from best to worst all day long and keep coming back!

    After a 24 hour labor that left me stalled at 7cm, a 101.5 temp, and a baby that was not taking well to a mild contraction with meconium in his fluid I opted for a csection to keep both myself and my son safe. When I had my catheter pulled (because I had to pee) I remember asking my husband to hand me a pillow so I could walk. My nurse dashed out the door so fast and returned with an abdominal binder. She was wonderful.

    Wish I had known some of these tips 26 years ago. By the third C-sec, I had figured some things out: a towel that I held by the ends across my abdomen and pulled tight when I sneezed or coughed. Also, after getting an incision infection the fist time (which my patriarchal OB/GYN pawned off as a UTI *eyeroll*), the second time, a different OB/GYN suggested drying my incision with the warm setting on my hairdryer and using a heating pad when I could to help speed healing. Much better outcome! Thanks for being a cheerleader for the C-sec Moms. Society has a nasty habit of making us feel inadequate and wrong for having C-secs. The physical trauma was bad enough, but the mental trauma took years to recover from.

The doctor told her she should have a c section on her first baby and she told him no and her mom was as small as her and had normal births.

      I spent MONTHS researching that topic after a c-section with my 4th baby led me to say for two years that I never wanted to be pregnant again for fear of another c-section. The answer to that question is to GO NATURAL!!! I had homebirths with babies number 5 & 6 and I wouldn't change that for the world. I realize that's going to be extremely unpopular on an OB/GYN's UA-cam channel, but that's what my research led me to. Have a hospital birth if you want. I don't care about that. But if you want to increase your chances of having a vaginal birth (which was an INSANELY easier recovery for me) go natural.

      I would also like to see a video about VBAC (vaginal birth after Caesarian). A lot of doctors here push the "Once a C-section, always a C-section" mantra, and it is possible to give birth vaginally after a C-section. So it would be nice to see a video about that, myths debunked etc.

      As someone who suffered a birth injury during a vaginal birth. I would just ask a lot of questions about your specific situation before developing a preference. I too preferred a vaginal birth, having been told recovery would be easier and there would be less complications. My son's head was in the 99th percentile. I'm left with my bladder and rectum herniation out of my vagina. I'm 18 months postpartum and still have to modify my activity for my "recovery". This is not an uncommon injury, up to 1/3 of mothers will experience some degree of pelvic organ prolapse. The number 1 risk factor for developing it is vaginal birth (although you can, rarely, prolapse without giving birth.) Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I was led by other women and most medical professionals to believe that you should avoid a c-section at all costs and now I'm basically maimed for the rest of my life. I'd personally like to see a video where she discusses how to know which type of delivery will be safest and best for you individually.

    I am 36 weeks with my second and am aiming to have a VBAC (my c section was unplanned and an extremely traumatic experience), but this is still a good little refresher in case I end up on that road again! I remember all of the recovery related things you mention so clearly! When you talked about being able to pass gas sooner after surgery, this is so important. I couldn't until the second day after my c section (after lots of peppermint tea and stool softeners) and it was so painful at times! No one helped me get up the first time (I think they were understaffed) and I was worried about my abdomen ripping in half, but standing and going for a little walk (or more of a hunched over shuffle😂) really does help you feel amazing! My daughter has a bunny like that frog that heats up so I'll be stealing that if needs be! Thanks for another great video! Glad you're getting so much visibility on UA-cam at the moment! X

      I had a VBAC but I don't get the big deal to be honest. I don't feel like I accomplished anything. It was just different. My section was an emergency one so I still had to endure full labour. I was already at the pushing stage. My VBAC was a few minutes from being another section. I did get shoddy, botched medical attention with my VBAC so that didn't help. They never even told me I hemorrhaged, for instance. I only found out after a midnight 911 call a few days later when I had to be admitted into another hospital. My Obyn had also ignored my complaints of chest pains while pregnant and my records had showed I was severely anemic before I had the baby. The second hospital introduced me to a great doctor though. She also caught my post partum depression early and followed through with taking care of me.

    when I was in high school i unfortunately had to have a laparotomy to remove two dermoid cysts (one 6cm and one 10cm) from my ovaries. Because of the nature of all the stuff happening inside (trauma from my Fallopian tubes getting twisted and the trauma to my ovaries and also some nerve damage near the incision) my recovery was much longer than that for a csection. I had never been to the gynecologist before because i was only 17 and so much of my situation could've been prevented or made easier if i had a relationship with a doctor specialized in women's health. Would love to hear your thoughts on when teen girls should start talking to a doctor/seeing a gynecologist about their reproductive health.

    Love love love your videos! I have recently subscribed and am thoroughly enjoying not only your humour but the information that your share with us all.
    Just a quick question though - would there be any concerns with using a heat pack on your c-section wound in creating a moisture/humid environment that could potentially encourage infection?

    Pro-tip! You can MAKE a weighted warming pack by filling an appropriately-sized breathable fabric pillow with rice and sewing it shut. You can throw it in the microwave for 3-4 minutes and voila! Weighted warming pad! If you’re handy with a sewing machine you can find patterns online that basically sew the rice into compartments so they’re always evenly distributed across the pad.

    Please can you do a video about longer term recovery from a c section? What happens in the months following the c section? I’m curious because 12 weeks after birth I’ve started to feel down on myself about still having a belly and I have no sense of context for what’s happening inside my body and what’s normal.

    I had a c section when I had my daughter. One thing I would add along with high waisted leggings, is high waisted underwear for the first week or so. I found that the most comfortable because lower cut undies would rub against my incision and it didn't feel good. Also yes, take your drugs!

    My tip- if you don't have a step stool in your house, GET ONE. Have it ready when you come home from the hospital. Getting in and out of your own bed without one can feel like climbing Mt. Everest.
    And why did no one tell me about these binder things?!?

    Having had 3 C-sections over the course of 10 years (the first in 2003) I WISH that someone had told me about the abdominal binders when I had the first 2! They helped SOOOOOO much during my recovery from the 3rd! And I can wholeheartedly agree with using the "Warmies," as well. The ones I used were homemade with clean new tube socks, rice, and dried lavender or essential oils that the OB RN that conducted my prenatal classes showed us how to make. They were awesome and inexpensive.

      It can be good. I had my second one in December. My first one was a nightmare. I would never have had another biological child if my husband was willing to adopt. That’s how traumatizing for me it was. I switched doctors after the unpleasant experience I had with my first and it made a world of difference for me. She was so amazing and made my pregnancy,recovery,the surgery itself. I was terrified. I had so much anxiety about it,but it was great. I didn’t have to be put under. I saw my baby right away. This doctor had me up and moving between 8-9hours after surgery. My first hospital and doctor it was about 6 hours shy of the 24 hour mark before they let me up and like 36 hours before the let me eat real food. So your second one can be smooth and a great recovery. Don’t be scared ladies.

      The quickest way to heal is to be mobile as soon as the midwife tells you it's okay to walk. I had 3 c-sections. First 2 c-sections I didn't recover quick as I didn't move to much. I was scared of the operation and thought it's better to rest. I wasn't advised that if I was very mobile I would heal super quick. With my 3rd c-section, I started to walk as soon as the midwife said I could. This time around I can move so well and I am recovering so quick. I am so shocked. Don't over do it. But the more you move the quicker you will heal. Get rest and drink loads of water.

    Love your channel, Mama! Healing was a nightmare after my first C-section, but I learned a few of these pro-tips by my second C-section years later. In particular, I added extra protein to my diet for faster wound healing, and I made sure to drink plenty of warm liquids as soon as I delivered. From hot tea to chicken broth, the soothing heat really helped me "go" when it was time. I had my daughter at midnight and was up walking around, using the bathroom on my own, and ready to discharge by later that evening. Within a week, I was mostly pain-free. Talk about amazed! Ever since then I've advised my preggers friends to keep Boost or Ensure and hot tea on hand post delivery. It works. ;)

    I can't say enough that a belly binder helps a lot. my doctor prescribed one to me in the hospital because I'm heavier and my belly sags. It was the most helpful thing I've ever been given by a doctor lol. I also agree that moving helps when you can. One thing that was my friend in the hospital was yoga pants and tank tops so I had easy access to nurse as well as comfort in my belly for support. One thing I will say that is helpful too is wearing adult diapers. I know that its cliche but I've found with being larger, they stay up better than the underpants they give you in the hospital. I've had 2 c-sections one traumatizing and one not and I can say that the sooner you stop the meds the easier it is to go to the bathroom....
