Just had baby #4- I’ve learned that the first few weeks go by in a flash like a fever dream. & to trust your instincts. Almost always swaddle that newborn baby. Their hands have a mind of their own and they will swipe their little faces and wake up. Night time feeds/changes- try to change them with your phone flashlight on so it’s not as bright and doesn’t fully wake the baby up. *pro tip* Mamas- tuck your baby’s muslin blanket underneath your shirt so it’s on your skin and gets your scent on it good, and when sleep training swaddle your baby in that blanket so baby can smell you at night and feel comforted.
I have a 1 month old and just wanted to comment from one mama to another - you’re doing GREAT! One quote that stuck with me is, “the very fact that you worry about being a good mom means that you already are one”. As long as baby is fed and you’re fed, you did great today. 😊
Being a new mama this helped so much! I wish I saw this video sooner. Our baby girl is 2 weeks old and I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one feeling like survival mode.

At the same time even now, I dont understand why babies need so much help with their sleep, since they were able to do it all by themselves for 9 months in utero😂 they should just continue doing what they've been doing😅😢
Oh my gosh, congrats mama. Those first two weeks ain't no joke. Hope you are feeling like you are on the mend and loving new parenthood--it's been the most exhausting and rewarding thing we've done.
Congrats! Mine is going to hit 4 weeks in 3 days but this 3rd week has been brutal. He was so sweet and peaceful the first 2 weeks. My mom says he's going through a growth spurt so he's hungry and cranky.
I've been watching your channel my whole pregnancy. Thank you so much for all of your advice! I'm so glad you made this video because after days of our 2 week old staying up for 4+ hours we've successfully put her down to sleep 6 times now. Learning about the wake window , shhhushing and rocking have helped us tremendously. ❤️
My husband and I read 12 Hours by 12 weeks and our daughter has been sleeping through the night since she was 10 weeks and she is 13 weeks now. We started around 7/8ish weeks and it was hard but so worth it! It really worked for us.
Oh that's AMAZING!! I've read it twice now (once when I was pregnant, and again now that she is here). Did you breastfeed? She recommends spacing feeds to every 4 hours and I don't know if Cec will love that/if it's the same for breastfed babies!!
I was EBF up until 2 weeks ago (she was losing weight because I wasn't producing enough). We naturally got on the 4 hour in between feeds but I remember in the book that she said if you wanted to feed every 3 hours that's fine so that might work for you guys. Now that she is on formula obviously I can see exactly what she is getting but before that I would time every feed and they were pretty long feeds like 30 minutes. (We used the Huckleberry app to track everything and love it!) I understand the feeding schedule might not work for everyone but the daytime and nighttime tool boxes she writes about are SO helpful. Our daughter was able to self soothe completely on her own by 10 weeks. Now she is a champ!! We don't follow the schedule exactly with naps because I feel like my daughter needs more sleep during the day (or else she is cranky pants). All this say do what is best for y'all!! I know you are both wonderful loving parents!!!
I have a 9 month old who sleeps/naps very well now. I do look back to the newborn days with dismay at the many mistakes we made! Great advice in this video, we will certainly be doing things completely differently with baby number 2 when the time comes. The only tip I would add is to watch the room temperature, keep it as comfortable as you can and adjust layers on baby appropriately.
I'm due with my third in 2 weeks. These are great tips that I remember learning on my own. My first broke out of the swaddle but I wish someone had suggested Velcro or arms up swaddles or soothing after swaddling until baby relaxed because I think I gave up too quickly and then used baby furniture that was counter-productive (long story). I had post-partum anxiety and didn't know what was normal or not as far as sleep patterns. Love how these doctors explained those patterns succinctly yet realistically. I also remember changing diaper between sides or when baby woke up to increase wakefulness as a newborn. In later stages I would watch eyes droop and get them down for a nap before eyes completely closed. After that, the next stage was creating a more scheduled environment around 3-4 naps a day. Thanks for the video to remind me of skills I have learned and that I can do this again. 🙂
Thank you for sharing! I’m due in September with my first. It’s so helpful to hear real life experience from parents who also know what’s expected and considered “normal” medically as physicians! Your videos have made me feel less nervous and prepared with realistic expectations.
It's great to hear about the wake windows. Our baby is 6 weeks old and mama is constantly worrying about how little he's awake but according to this he's totally following the wake windows.
I'm going through motherhood all over again with my 3 week old son. I have a 17 year old daughter, so I forgot just how exhausting the first few weeks really are 😩
My first son slept so good and so long right from when we came home from the hospital, and I used to think newborns were “easy” and I never really felt sleep deprived, but then my second was tough! He cluster fed and never slept longer than 45 mins.... for MONTHS! 😖 I finally knew what other moms meant when they said newborns are a lot of work! Lol Now I’m expecting baby3, so we’ll see what this one has in store for me 🤷🏽♀️🥰 Thank you for sharing all these tips!
My baby sleeps only on my hand and like to cluster feed too. I’m all day and night just breastfeeding and rocking my baby. It feels so hard and stressful. 🥺
@@valjetah yes! It will get better! The first few months can be tough getting into a good routine, but don’t forget to enjoy these moments too, they go by so fast and before you know it, they are toddlers and sometimes don’t even want to snuggle 🥺 Congratulations on your new baby!
Thanks for the video guys, you both sounds like typical new parents it's so lovely to hear you guys honesty aswell, these are great tips! I do some of them aswel ,this is my third baby and it's amazing lm so blessed this time round or myb because Im much calmer but baby girl is a great sleeper, since birth she sleeps alot and has really short but lovely awake times and could sleep 5 hours a night and 4 hours during the day she is six weeks and thriving living for her smiles and funny faces ,lm one happy mama
This was an amazing and very informative as well as reassuring video to say the least I think this video deserves an award. I have a newborn and I'm experiencing all these things, thank you guys very much
This was incredibly helpful! I thought my baby hated the swaddle too but when I stopped swaddling his arms, I noticed he would only sleep for less than 2 hours at a time. I followed your advice and he was totally calm! I just had to be a bit more patient with it. My midwives had told me to keep baby awake during feeds but never actually explained why. So, I kept letting baby fall asleep and, like you, found I was constantly feeding. Thank you for explaining why it’s important to keep baby awake! I’m already noticing a difference.
I have a scheduled C-section in 1 week! And even though I have two older ones, it’s been a while, so I’m trying to soak in as much knowledge as I can that I may have forgotten. 😂
Eat play sleep routine, and sticking to routine. That got my kids to sleep though the night early. And they were great sleepers and good about going to bed throughout their toddler years and beyond. “On Becoming Babywise” was the book I read and It worked liked a charm.
Into our 2nd week and I feel like babies behavior changes everyday. Me and my husband have finally worked out a good sleep schedule. We are learning so mucb everyday.
Thank you so much for this video. As someone who knows absolutely nothing about infants, this is exactly the kind of information I need as I prepare to give birth in a few months. I'm saving this video for future reference and to watch again with my husband.
Jenna! You are so welcome. So many congrats on your pregnancy--hope you are feeling well and we are so glad you find these helpful. Pregnancy and parenthood is a very steep learning curve, and we know we have appreciated all the pointers we have gotten along the way!
Such a great video & tips! Thank you for sharing. We are just about to hit our three week mark, and we are survived & still surviving 🙌🏼 wish I saw this video from the time that we had him! The swaddling, we thought he hated it also, but it helps sooo much to calm him & get him to sleep easier & longer. We just came across the white noise, and combined with the swaddling, it works wonders!
Thanks for another great video, doctors! My little Boy (5weeks) has always made long sleep and wake time streches. Usually he likes to sleep 3-5 hours (possible because of supplementing with formula for medical reasons) and be awake for 2+ hours in daytime. Once he is in "night mode" he sleeps great trough the night with frequent meals around every 4 hours. Our problem is that he can not fall asleep for naps in daytime despite of being tired. He really fights sleep. Do you have recommendations to help him fall asleep for naps?
thank you for your videos, they have bee so helpful. Lol I love that you also are parents! It would be so cool if there were a channel with an OB mom, pediatrician Dad, and experienced infant/toddler nanny. Even though they may not be parents, some (good) nannies have been working for years and years with infant sleep schedules and have a wealth of knowledge and experience with newborn and infant sleep! Idk I was just thinking biw cool that would be, but anyhow, super love your videos and your advice is very valuable!
I just had my first baby last Wednesday and have found your videos SO helpful!! Definitely going to try out some things to get my little girl sleeping her best!
Oh congrats mama!! That first week is such a blur, I hope you are surviving and feeling a little more like yourself every day!! Enjoy all those sweet sweet newborn snuggles and yawns and hang in there!!
I am getting so nervous! I’m currently 35 weeks with my second daughter but my first is already 7 years old so I completely forgot about everything 😬 Your videos are helping me out so much 💕
My oldest was 6 when I had my second. My second is now 8, when I'm about to have my third. I know what you mean. Just research as much as you can on the topics you don't feel supper confident about
I’m 36 weeks first time mom having my husband watch this amazing video !! Getting nervous but honestly your video helped so much calm my anxiety ! Thank you so much !!!❤️😩
Due in February with #2 & I've done the "mom sway" ever since I was pregnant with my first 9 years ago 😂 It just became a habit. Thanks for the information, it's been a long time since I've had a newborn & I had very little information and support back then, so I'm taking in all the information I can find
The problem isn’t putting them to sleep, it’s how to let them sleep on their own without waking up!!! Lol Currently holding my baby to sleep 💓💓she woke up after 15 min being down. it’s sweet, I love it but also wish I could do the pile of laundry over there 👀
This is SO helpful. We’ll be 30 weeks Wednesday and this has just eased 30 weeks of anxiety and me wondering how on earth I was going to care for a newborn baby. Thank you! And congratulations on your little one!
babies sleep better after 6-8 weeks, my 3 months old now sleeps 5 hours in one go at night. for reflex u can tilt the bed/mattress or add a folder below it to make it slightly elevated,
Loved this (and all) video(s). Due in 5 weeks with my first and trying to absorb all the information I can. Love that y’all not only have the medical knowledge but are now having real hands on experience as well. Also, kudos to you for posting with a newborn!!! I’ve been debating getting the snoo or not. Loved hearing that y’all chose not to.
@@christyleslie6466 Personally i want it so badly but its just a huge investment even to rent it for 6months lol. I'm still gonna get it though. but the price is silly!
Congratulations to you both on your first child! Expecting our first child in around a month. As soon as we see one of your videos uploaded, we click on it! And we appreciate and trust the advice coming from you as you are both professionals/ doctors! 🙏 Please keep these meaningful videos coming!
Hi, I just found your channel and I love the information that both of you provide for moms & babies. I’m a FTM 32 weeks pregnant with fraternal Twins. Could you do a video specifically on Twins and multiples & what might differ with delivery & postpartum. I’m kind of nervous about what to expect.
We’re so glad you found us! Twins are at a higher risk for preterm birth, which can sometimes be scary but you’ve already made it to 32weeks which is amazing!! We will gladly as this idea to our list of episodes to do, but would also recommend you check out our video on preterm birth. ua-cam.com/video/eKt8exoEGYY/v-deo.html
@N Russell how would you make a video about this? Just go to your dr and check your levels if you’re curious. It seems like a waste of time and money unless you’ve been trying for over a year which is what’s recommended. People get so hung up on things that don’t matter. You’d have better luck to stop stressing about these things and just enjoy the process.
Such amazing tips! One of my concerns with becoming a new mom is being able to get enough sleep for my husband, baby, and me when the little one arrives. Thank you!
Thank you! Having a supportive partner will be a HUGE help. Trading off between who was calming baby during sleepless stretches was the only way we’ve survived.
It is worth to consider white noise. White and pink noise facilitating long, deep and healthy sleep are of particular importance for children. There is no absolute silence in the mother's womb. Various sounds reach the fetus - voices, music, and even the sound of flowing blood. Through the amniotic fluid and the specific environment in the mother's body, all sounds that reach the fetus appear as white noise. After giving birth, such a sound makes the baby feel safe and confident. This noise reminds the baby of the conditions in the mother's belly. In the case of newborns and infants, white noise will work not only during sleep. It is also worth using it to soothe and calm a crying baby.
2nd time mom, my first was a preemie and he NEVER slept. He was incredibly fussy. Eight years later I am on baby #2 and thought I was far better prepared. Unfortunately turns out I apparently just suck at baby sleep because my girl actually is up also from 2am all the way until 7am and I am exhausted since I have to get out the door by 8am. I read a book by Polly Moore regarding baby sleep in which she also focuses on the 90 min cycles. She is just 4wks old as I am ebf and the cluster feeding has wrecked me. She has reflux though so it is a eat, spew everything, cry and repeat during those night hours. Her pediatrician told me yesterday to pump into a bottle and add a tsp of cereal to keep it down. Hoping that and these tips help us. I get her naked down to her diapers while feeding.. she still falls asleep however lol.
You can do it! Those first couple weeks are a BLUR and all about survival. Just hang in there, don't be afraid to ask for help, and know that you WILL get sleep again!!!
The main sign is just that they have spent the right amount of time nursing! I think 10-15 minutes per breast is the average. You can also listen to make sure you hear swallowing, so you know they've been eating the whole time. Another possible sign is that they actively pull away when they're full, but that one is a little harder since some babies will keep suckling for comfort (but you would stop hearing swallowing). Long term signs are more obvious: weight gain, regular pees and poops, and longer and more regular naps. But, progress can also go out the window during a growth spurt haha. I would love to see a video on growth spurts!
I have 11 week old twins and one is sleeping longer than the other because he’s bigger. The pediatrician said it has to do with weight/stomach size and length of time they sleep.
Lol! I love you guys. Found it hilarious that you did a baby sleep video at 2 weeks! Cute. Im two years in and I still have no idea! They go through so many phases, regressions, life just affecting their routines! Anyways, would love to see another updated sleep video these days and when you hit toddlerdom!
I had my little boy 5 yrs ago and just gave birth to a newborn 2 weeks ago. She was doing great the 1st week. Until she started crying a lot while being swaddled. She loves to sleep with her arms up. Also she sweats a lot. So I don't swaddle her anymore. But she wakes up every 1 1/2 now 🥲 I'm going to use those tips. Hopefully it works!
Ah this was great! Awesome, super helpful! You missed one though.. maybe you don't know about it yet! Go learn and tell the world! My tip is something I learned from a guest speaker on Oprah on UA-cam! Here it is: newborns have a universal language based on body reflex noises! If you listen very closely, you can hear the different cries! Neh, eh, Heh, awh,.. maybe 2 or 3 others. Go check this out! My sister has a newborn and can definitely hear the different cries, and addressing them faster means a happy baby, and less screaming-at-the-top-of-their-lungs scenarios. I also enjoyed "the wonder weeks" about how some weeks are just hard, awful, because the baby is going through a growth spurt and heading into a new stage. These weeks are predictable and knowing them helps soothe the parent when the week seems like nothing is going well. Maybe there's a reason!
In terms of safety for sleeping, what are your thoughts on a bassinet vs. a crib in those early months? Is there any difference as long as you keep it empty while baby sleeps in it?
Curious to see what advice is available to make infant/baby more comfortable on their back. Ours like napping etc on us or on her tummy (as we keep an eye) but on her back she is restless very quickly.
Really grateful for your educating channel! Qs: How loud can I play the white noise machine? They Come with 85dba Max, and I doubt 85dba is good for the little ears
Love your advices.. I’m a mom to be and you guys explain everything so good I’m actually looking forward not to sleep lol thanks for all your tips Jess❤️
FTM here! My little guy is just 5 weeks and we just stretched his feeding to every 4 hours for night time feeds. He has to be woken up to be feed. Should I be letting him sleep more or should I stick with what I am doing? Want to do what’s best for him
Hi, I have a 7day old baby who is feeding well and sleeping a lot. She is being breast-fed. I was wondering if you had any tips on getting her to sleep in the crib/bassinet? She currently sleeps very well on her parents but when you put her down in the bassinet, she will start screaming after only a few minutes and we have to begin calming her again. I really would like her to sleep in the bassinet as it is the lowest chance of SIDS.
Hello! Very informative video. My baby girl is 6 weeks old and from 4 weeks needs swinging to sleep and she only stays asleep in my arms. Whenever I leave her in her bassinet or on my bed for co sleeping she is awake. Any advice please. I need sleep!!
This is a non related question… my obgyn (who is amazing and helped me so much throughout pregnancy and labor) is pregnant and I really want to give her something nice, but as a obgyn I’m sure she’s getting lots of presents from her patients. I don’t know what’s appropriate. Any suggestions?

I’m amazed on how much this video helped me ! I was worried that my baby wasn’t sleeping, and it was just this missing tips and tricks
have you tried white noise?
Old Nurse: great-grandma...I'm loving you two sharing your experience and teaching.
Great tips! I needed this refresher for my second. It was a little long for me - FYI play on 1.25x speed or more starting at 3:30 :)
Thanks for the timestamp. Indeed way too long of an intro 🤭
Watching this while my newborn born today is in my arms finally 😌
Congratulations mama
Congratulations to your lil one ❤️
Congrats Mummy ❤️
Aweee..🥰🥰🥰😘 im also waiting for my baby just one month to go..🤩
I'm due with my third in 2 weeks.
I love the candidness from 2. Thank you guys.
I'm going through motherhood all over again with my 3 week old son. I have a 17 year old daughter, so I forgot just how exhausting the first few weeks really are 😩
try white noise
My first son slept so good and so long right from when we came home from the hospital, and I used to think newborns were “easy” and I never really felt sleep deprived, but then my second was tough! He cluster fed and never slept longer than 45 mins.... for MONTHS! 😖 I finally knew what other moms meant when they said newborns are a lot of work! Lol
Now I’m expecting baby3, so we’ll see what this one has in store for me 🤷🏽♀️🥰
Thank you for sharing all these tips!
Good luck with number 3! Hopefully they sleep a little more like your firstborn did 🤞🏻
My baby sleeps only on my hand and like to cluster feed too.
I’m all day and night just breastfeeding and rocking my baby.
It feels so hard and stressful. 🥺
@@valjetah i hear ya, I used to tell my husband that I thought I was going crazy because I was so sleep deprived🥱 how old is your baby?
@@AnaLampWoman one month old, I hope it will get better with time 🙏🏻
@@valjetah yes! It will get better! The first few months can be tough getting into a good routine, but don’t forget to enjoy these moments too, they go by so fast and before you know it, they are toddlers and sometimes don’t even want to snuggle 🥺
Congratulations on your new baby!
Thank you! I’m 34 weeks and so excited for my little boy to get here!
You’re so close. Congrats!!!
This was an amazing and very informative as well as reassuring video to say the least I think this video deserves an award. I have a newborn and I'm experiencing all these things, thank you guys very much
OMG! I’m 44 and the nurse at the hospital told my mom to feed me only every 4 HOURS!! Needless to say I cried a lot.
I’m literally taking notes that I don’t forget this information when baby comes (currently 22 weeks)
22 weeks too!! Good luck with everything!!
Yes this. Baby wise book taught me this and my daughter has slept through the night since 3 months and she’s almost three now
Into our 2nd week and I feel like babies behavior changes everyday. Me and my husband have finally worked out a good sleep schedule. We are learning so mucb everyday.
Nice to see two working physicians make time to share knowledge for free. It is very appreciated. Thanks!
Thank you all for your videos, my wife and I and our newborn baby have benefitted from your work. Thank you!
This was so comforting to watch. 1st time mom and I am just getting by day after day. My baby is 2 weeks old. It has been a struggle to get some sleep
I’m currently 35 weeks with my second daughter but my first is already 7 years old so I completely forgot about everything 😬 Your videos are helping me out so much 💕
You’re going to do great! We hear it’s like riding a bike (that just happens to cry, poop, and is sometimes fussy with feedings). Good luck mama!
My oldest was 6 when I had my second. My second is now 8, when I'm about to have my third. I know what you mean. Just research as much as you can on the topics you don't feel supper confident about
New follower! 5 months pregnant and trying to prepare myself BEFORE he’s here hopefully I can apply all your tips!! Love your content
Literally the best video for new moms
I’m 36 weeks first time mom having my husband watch this amazing video !! Getting nervous but honestly your video helped so much calm my anxiety ! Thank you so much !!!❤️😩
Due in February with #2 & I've done the "mom sway" ever since I was pregnant with my first 9 years ago 😂 It just became a habit. Thanks for the information, it's been a long time since I've had a newborn & I had very little information and support back then, so I'm taking in all the information I can find
😍 I'm due with #2 in March and my 1st will be nearly 9 as well!
The problem isn’t putting them to sleep, it’s how to let them sleep on their own without waking up!!! Lol
Currently holding my baby to sleep 💓💓she woke up after 15 min being down. it’s sweet, I love it but also wish I could do the pile of laundry over there 👀
This is SO helpful. We’ll be 30 weeks Wednesday and this has just eased 30 weeks of anxiety and me wondering how on earth I was going to care for a newborn baby. Thank you! And congratulations on your little one!
I know this is late but my first 2 months were absolute torture. We are at 4 months and things are so great now!
babies sleep better after 6-8 weeks, my 3 months old now sleeps 5 hours in one go at night. for reflex u can tilt the bed/mattress or add a folder below it to make it slightly elevated,
Loved this (and all) video(s).
So glad you found our videos and that you like them so much!! Thanks!
@@TheDoctorsBjorkman I'd love to hear why you decided against the Snow as well- currently debating as is Mandi it seems!
@@christyleslie6466 Personally i want it so badly but its just a huge investment even to rent it for 6months lol. I'm still gonna get it though. but the price is silly!
Thanks. I'm also a new and first time parent.
This was SO incredibly happy! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge as well as your experience to help parents and babies !!
Haven’t finished watching the video but i already feel better; genuinely thought I was not doing something right
Congratulations to you both on your first child!
Expecting our first child in around a month. As soon as we see one of your videos uploaded, we click on it! And we appreciate and trust the advice coming from you as you are both professionals/ doctors! 🙏
Please keep these meaningful videos coming!
Keep your bubba in your room or even sleep with them till 2 or 3 months. Your baby will benefit from it.
It really does get better with time. And help!
Wow its so good to see you guys again
This is terrific. Im glad it worked for your baby. But that doesn't mean it will work for all if any.
Thank you I am 25 weeks and worried about the sleeping!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am going on to week two
You can do it! Those first couple weeks are a BLUR and all about survival. Just hang in there, don't be afraid to ask for help, and know that you WILL get sleep again!!!
Great tips! But how do you know baby has had a full feeding? how can you know they are full? can you maybe do a video on that?
Watch baby for relaxed hands vs clenched fists. A full baby will relax their hands, while a hungry baby’s hands will be clenched or closed into fists.
You can tell babies are satisfied when they are relaxed
You’ll be able to tell!! They usually latch away or push away breast/bottle. They’re also way calmer when full
@@natalievanallen5723 Clenched fist could also mean they are cold and not necessarily hungry.
Perfect! Our baby girl is 4 weeks tomorrow.
I’d really recommend the ‘love to dream’ swaddles. They let you swaddle with babies arms up. My LO won’t sleep in anything else!
Thank you beautiful people! So helpful!
Curious to see what advice is available to make infant/baby more comfortable on their back. Ours like napping etc on us or on her tummy (as we keep an eye) but on her back she is restless very quickly.
These helped massively thanks
First time here and omg your opening is the cutest thing I've seen in a very long time 😍
Guys, you two are a-ma-zing!! Stumbled upon your videos, and I think I'm gonna go through all of them.
Really grateful for your educating channel! Qs: How loud can I play the white noise machine? They Come with 85dba Max, and I doubt 85dba is good for the little ears
This has been so helpful and easy to understand, also my favorite video of yours. Thank you 💛🙏🏼
We get told in the UK not to swaddle as it can increase SIDS
Thanks for sharing. Hope everyone gets a little more sleep having watched this information.

Love your advices.. I’m a mom to be and you guys explain everything so good I’m actually looking forward not to sleep lol thanks for all your tips

FTM here! My little guy is just 5 weeks and we just stretched his feeding to every 4 hours for night time feeds. He has to be woken up to be feed. Should I be letting him sleep more or should I stick with what I am doing? Want to do what’s best for him
Thank you! First time dad here 🙏🏼
So glad you found us. Congrats on entering fatherhood!
Thank you very much
Thanks for sharing this. I'm 33 weeks so it should come in handy soon!
