Here for any mamas coming to the comment section for reassurance... I had planned a home birth and ended up laboring for 40-something excruciating hours before my midwife suggested heading to the hospital for an epidural (my body was EXHAUSTED and baby wasn’t budging!)... looooong story short, my husband and I decided to opt for a c section to get baby out safely and to avoid an emergency situation, which seemed eminent after all we had been through.
We had planned for a home birth because we thought we wanted nothing to do with modern medicine messing with the natural process of birthing our baby. Up until that point, I was TERRIFIED about the idea of a c-section... well, God had other plans for us. The medical staff were absolutely amazing and the process of the c-section was not scary at all!! Just like the pain and intensity of labor, you forget everything once you realize you will have baby in your arms SOON! Stay focused on your little one and it makes it all worth it!

I’m very grateful for the positive theme in this comment section. I’m coming up on 20 weeks and am opting for a planned C-section. Due to my medical history, this is the safest choice for me and baby. Many people don’t understand my decision and feel the need to voice that but I know what’s best for my family and this is it. I’m going into it with optimism and a positive outlook and hope that will improve my recovery too.

After the meds wore off I walked around the room a few times a day to help recovery. It hurt at first but got so much better. Had a super recovery from a c-section! Currently 1 WEEK PP! got up at about 12 hours after assisted by a nurse to use the bathroom, from there walked around, never took pain medication other than ibuprofen, which helped my bowels start moving faster also! Stool softeners daily and I started them about a week prior, and drank benefiber packets in my morning daily tea my entire pregnancy! (As someone with long standing constipation issues this was a huge help and I had no issues with BMs after birth or during pregnancy) I wanted a vaginal birth but this recovery has been so easy whereas a vaginal birth could’ve and probably would have had me in much more pain/suffering as baby was 9lbs 13oz, the risks for excessive tearing/shoulder dystocia were too high for me, All the horror stories I hear about C-sections had me really scared in the delivery room, but I’m here to say it can be positive!! The worst pain for me was the trapped gas, which I felt immediately on the OR table and thought I was having a heart attack, nope just gas, husband made me several cups of hot green tea daily and it helped rid of the gas. I wear my abdominal binder as I feel like, I’m up and mobile, able to do laundry/cook/clean. I don’t over due it, but can definitely attribute quick healing to no pain medicine (narcotics), moving around, and a great husband for support if I need it! But mommas get up get that hot shower feel refreshed every day, and do what you can without overdoing it! Y’all got this! 💕

Side note I was worried the epidural wasn’t working because I could still feel people touching me during prep but I didn’t know you’ll feel touching tugging pressure but never any sharp pain! Another item I didn’t mention above was nausea, told anesthesiologist immediately when I was feeling sick and he gave me something for it through my iv, worked great but man from that point on I was the most tired I’ve ever been, in fact the recovery room was such a blur from how tired I was afterwards! This video is great & everything so true! My first birth was an unplanned c section after laboring for almost 36 hours!!!! 🤯 my second birth was a planned c section. One thing I will say is if you have a lot of itching all over your body afterwards, it’s normal from the medicine you receive from surgery. It sucks but it’s to be expected. And also, if you have a musty smell on your incision that is underneath your stomach, it is likely because it is folded under your skin from your stomach and baby powder will help with it to keep it dry.

I’ve had two unmedicated births (18 hours and 4 hours-so very different) and then my third was an emergency C-section with general anesthesia. The part that surprised me the most was having labor shakes after the surgery! Waking up to labor shakes with the incision was the most intense experience of my life. I would take unmedicated labor over again anytime! The discomfort of labor is just a muscle working at max capacity vs you know, someone cutting a hole in you. I didn’t want to get out of bed after the C-section and I didn’t want to take the pain meds, but I wanted to recover so I took the meds. I was amazed that I could walk on day 2. We knew that we would likely get emergency surgery because of her arrhythmia (which is already gone 6 weeks later!), so it wasn’t a surprise. And I have a beautiful baby and the pain feels far away. But I wouldn’t wish a C-section on anyone! People joke about them so casually!

My mom had 3 c sections and my older sister has had 2. All 5 absolutely amazing experience in terms of recovery. I think the intense pain relates more to an emergency C section than a planned one at least that's what professional obgyns say. The emergency C sections I believe require working much faster and also using a different cutting technique where as a planned c section does not require this which is why the pain and recovery is not so bad after surgery. I was in the hospital room with my older sister in day 1 after a planned c section and she said her pain level was at a 4. Sounds pretty good. ❤

I had a csection (my second) two weeks ago. I found out the reason for my first csection was because my daughter was stuck for some reason. My second csection I went into early labour at 38 weeks pregnant and eventually was told to go hospital 23rd of December. There was multiple reasons why I chose to have a csection again but once she was born we found the cord was wrapped around her leg 3 times so we were thankful we made that decision! Lol.
From day 1-5 at home after the aesthetic worn off it hit me really hard, was so painful and couldn't move then it slipped into bad constipation where there was a blockage so even after taking lactulose it wouldn't clear. It was a whole day of it being stuck and causing so much pain. Eventually I had to push the blockage out and had a bad stomach for days after. But after 5 day the pain from the csection was almost all gone and I stopped taking pain relief plus I was back to a normal routine.
Taking off the bandage on xmas day was the worst, literally cried in the shower it was that bad but having a shower in the bath was impossible because somehow I had to get over the bath and I had no strength.
My suggestion to anyone about to have a baby is to look into recovery options for both natural and csection births and see what people suggest like the nitty gritty what to expect or how to combat things because each time I've went into this without any real advice and help. If you have a csection stock up on: painkillers, ibuprofen, high waisted granny pants, maternity pads (the thickest you can get), lactulose, ice packs/heat packs and plenty of loose fitting clothes 🙂 also look into what your shower is like, is it possible to get in easy, can you make it easier? What about getting up out of bed without stomach muscles maybe there's ways to pull yourself up like a bedside table that's stable and heavy.
More advice is be careful when getting up try to use your arms and legs. Don't get up too quick. Take pain meds regular. Wear your stockings til your mobile and if you have injections every night for weeks then remind yourself an injection a night is better than blood clots and dying. Rely on your partner if you have one or ask family or friends to help out for those first few days because you are going to be worse for wear. Rest as much as you can.

I have a c section planned in two weeks for my monochorionic diamniotic twins due to various (high) risk factors, and the last part really hit home. It’s not the birth I want, and I really thought I would be able to deliver naturally but we had additional risk factors present at the last minute and now the c section is the clear safer option. I’m disappointed but thankful that I have this option to bring my babies into the world safely. Thank you for the encouraging words and tips ❤️ praying all goes well!

27 hours of labor and my baby’s head wasn’t dropping. I had dilated to 3cm. Doctor recommended a c-section saying that it was a red flag that his head wasn’t dropping after all that time. Turns out he was sunny side up with the cord wrapped around his neck. Doc also said my pelvic area is narrow and baby was big. He was worried about baby getting stuck.I never imagined giving birth my first time around in this way. I was mad at everyone including the baby and feeling like I could have done something differently to avoid a c -section. It’s so traumatizing physically, mentally and emotionally. This is going to be a long road to recovery for me.

I can relate so much. I had planned for an all natural birth but then while I had already been in labor for many hours they suspected an infection that would have been dangerous to baby’s health so strongly recommended c section. I didn’t want to endanger my baby so I got the c section. The first week was horrible, I cried every day about baby and myself missing out on the birth experience. And like you I had some angry feelings towards my baby because had she come out a few days earlier (she was overdue) there would have been no infection- which turned out to be harmless when test results came in two days later :( And then you feel bad for being angry at your beautiful innocent little baby. It will take time to get over it psychologically I’m sure.

Hi Bridget, have been following your tips since long. My entire planning went haywire at Week 36 plus when my water leaked suddenly and I had to reach hospital around 1:30 noon at emergency. The doctor available initially over phone said i might have to stay at hospital on antibiotics and under observation but my labour started on its own and gradually increased to 10 cm dilation by evening 6:30 to 7 pm. After trying your moo breathing and de stressor breathing and constant CTG monitoring I tried my best to breathe my baby out but doctor said they have to operate because they could touch my cervix fully dilated but baby head not passing out of it. They said baby will either choke or get injured if i pushed further and advised C -section delivery. Around 8:30 pm we consented for C-sec considering safety of baby and my baby boy weighing 3.1 kgs was born before me at 9:45 pm. Safe and sound! Doctors told me term - "Deep Transverse Arrest " and said there was no other way to deliver baby safely into the world.
I was completely prepared for normal delivery but at that point safety of baby and me was important. Is it because I have small pelvic floor that this arrest position happened?

I had to have an emergency c sec at 38 weeks, because of bleeding from placental abruption. My placenta was a bit low lying, there was a chance for normal delivery but was also warned about possibility of c section. I was really hoping for normal but it couldn’t happen :(. So now I’m here recovering from c section, and it’s not as smooth and fast as the recovery I had after normal delivery with my first baby. This video is very informative, thanks for sharing .

I had an unplanned C-section after hours of labor, first baby. 28 hours in, I only dilated 4 cm, after which my doctor had to assist with breaking my water to speed things along. The baby unfortunately did not tolerate the contractions well after that (his heartbeat kept dropping every time), so we have to do an emergency C-section. My recovery felt slow because I wasn't prescribed opioids due to allergies, but I still moved around despite the pain. Nursing was definitely a challenge.

I had 60 hours of failed induction before having an emergency C-section two weeks ago. fun times. I kept postponing the epidural, and on the third day, I gave in. I had a terrible reaction to the epidural where it made my blood pressure 50/30. I thought I was dying. they gave me 3 shots of epinephrine which got it to 90/50, but my baby had a heart rate of 50 for 4 minutes, so they went crazy trying to get him out. what's crazy is I had the induction for hypertension, and literally the night before, my blood pressure had been 215/108. So that whole thing was a clusterfuck. My baby is fine though his apgar scores were 8/9 and he was only 37 weeks. he will be his original due date tomorrow, and he's already trying to crawl, and he can roll onto his side.

I had to call the nursing line because I wasn't sure what to do about it and she had my husband take it off for me while we were on the phone, then he had to run to the store to get new bandages (there were no "waterproof" ones like the hospital had) while I laid on the bed feeling totally helpless with a little baby on my arm and no strength to sit up. He redressed it the best he could, but now it feels like my guts are going to fall out all the time if I don't physically hold myself while I'm walking. Sorry you had that experience. I just had an elective c section last week. I had a c section before and it was a risk (very low) of uterine rupture and I though a second c section was easier for me. So, I went for the c section but the surgeons were so rude, the anesthesia made some weird effects on me and the recovery team were kind of rude. It was a very traumatic experience too.

I was trying for a vbac and had watched tons of your videos about labor and delivery.. I felt like I am so prepared for a natural vaginal birth
However I waited for a labor until my due date ..until then tried so many of your tips to induce labor but nothing worked
At the end my doctor didnt support me to pass my due date and had an elective Caesar
And have had lifelong regret for not giving birth naturally since it was our last baby... 🥺😭It's been two weeks now I am still so disheartened
Finally watching this video I never wanted to watch.. Well thanks for being with me

I just had an unplanned c-section yesterday. Having one was one of my fears because, personally, I was worried I wouldn't feel like I birthed my baby, but that someone else had done it for me. Let me tell you, that feeling totally went away. My water broke early in the morning and I was still only 1cm dilated 50% and baby was still high, totally not engaged at all. I went through 32 hours of incredibly intense contractions, and all the drugs. I fought for her vaginal birth for as long as I could so when I went into that OR, I still felt absolutely empowered.

Had an emergency c-section after being in labor for 48 hours... I was 9cm dilated and couldn't progress anymore. They overdose me on epidural so when the nurse took my cath out I found it impossible to urinate. Ended up getting my bladder scanned and found that there was 1400cc... I also ended up running a fever of 101.4 and had to be on IV antibiotics which ended up causing excessive swelling and burning. Eventually fever went away and I was discharged home but after a week of enduring immense pain I was back at the doctor's office to find out that my c-section was infected and I had developed a seroma. I never had a c-section so I assumed the 10/10 pain I had for the entire week was deemed normal... I couldn't use the bathroom by myself nor could I walk without shaking in pain. Worst experience ever...

Remember it usually gets much more bearable once you can ambulate after surgery. Getting up that first time will hurt but just see if your nurse can give you your pain meds (especially a narcotic, it'll dull your pain sensations). If you start getting extremely painful cramps in your neck, shoulders, chest, abdomen... It's just gas but it's like having a poo cramp in other areas. Ask for gas x (simethicone/mylicon) right after surgery when you get to postpartum. A heating pad is amazing for cramps. An abdominal binder was really helpful when moving around or picking up baby. 2 out of 3 of my by s were born via csection (the girls, 2&3, decided to be breech). Honestly my csection recoveries (without laboring) were easier than getting over an episiotomy. That was rough. I also had really bad leg and foot edema after my two fullterm babies. I could barely walk across a 12x12 room, honestly the pain, heat and tightness would make it feel like the skin on top of my feet and calves would rip in half. That was worse on day 3-14 than the abdominal pain. Even 10mg oxys didn't improve the excruciating pain of ambulation after over exerting myself which would inevitably worsen the swelling. Try a baby aspirin with a doctor's approval and put your feet up as high as you comfortably can. Try to lie flat and put your feet on top of 12in of pillows. I had to sleep like that for a month or my feet would get horrible circulation. Request those post surgical leg massagers to wear when you sleep when you're still in hospital. Yes they're annoying but they'll help the swelling improve by morning.

I had an emergency c section as my baby had flipped from head down to breach the night before my water broke and I went into rapid labor. I went from 1 to 4 cm dilated in just under an hour. The ob was checking baby position before offering IV pain meds and discovered he had turned. He was born 45 min after that point as the ob was concerned he'd go into the birth canal with how quickly I was dilating. My contractions were about 2 minutes apart by the time I got to the OR (3 hours after my first contraction) The spinal did not work for me so I had to go under general anesthesia. Pretty much every aspect of my labor experience was unexpected but as soon as I got to hold my son it did not really matter. I'm not sure if we'll have more kids and how my labor experience may play into how I feel but I do know that it was worth it for my baby.

The nurses and doctors did the bare minimum to explain anything about the procedure, consequences, or how to heal properly. I planned for a home birth, but my daughter needed to come out via c section. I had previously never had any surgery, and I have never wanted one! I cannot stand the entire medical system, and I feel left in the dust by these people who are supposed to be "caregivers." It's obviously just a paycheck for most of them.
