Restoring PlayStation 3 "Fat" with the yellow light of Death (YLOD) - Console Restoration & Repair

  • Another PS3 restoration, this second YLoD repair on the channel. This particular unit is a CECHE01 model, YLOD needs no introduction. The console doesn’t turn on and presents a yellow light followed by 3 beeps and a flashing red light i.e. the "Yellow Light of Death" or simply abbreviated YLoD.
    PS3 YLOD Fixed with an Original Nec/Tokin Capacitor
    Now the tricky part, there are not any available schematics for this exact model of PS3 that I could find. But there are some available that are a little similar which provide some hints about what might be the issue.
    On the PlayStation 3, the NEC/TOKIN capacitors are prone to failure, causing a Yellow Light if Death error. This is a guide on replacing those capacitors.
    The Yellow Light of Death is not an error with one specific fix; rather, it is a more general failure. This guide addresses ONE of the POTENTIAL problems causing a PS3 Yellow Light of Death, however, these capacitors are prone to failure anyway, so they should be replaced (if you are experienced enough) to help the longevity of the console.
    This video shows you everything you need to know about taking apart your Playstation3 Fat. If you need to replace the fan or the disk drive this video will show you how to get inside and disassemble your system. Since this system isn't the newest on the market anymore, it's cheaper to replace the parts yourself than it is to send them in for repairs.

    Tip for soldering on the ps3, because the motherboard is so ridiculously big, if you put the solder on how you did (coldly) then follow up with a heatgun and the soldering iron at the same time on each joint, you'll get a much better and longer lasting connection. It'll look more neat too

      This is NOT a fix! The RSX silicon is the issue. Sony fixed this with the 65nm chips forwards. The heating causes some of the detached solder balls to make contact. This repair won't last. This is a commonly known issue and the fix has been known for a while now. This is NOT the fix! And no, it's not the solder balls under the RSX, it's the die solder balls. They're leaded and cannot be reflowed.

      Just so you know, the RSX isn't always what fails first. In the case of this video, it was luckily just the capacitors that failed. There's no singular answer to fixing ylod and everybody who has a ylod PS3 and wants to get it fixed should diagnose it first and foremost using syscon. Then they can figure out where the hardware fault is.
      But yeah, the original GPU is indeed defective in most fat PS3s and susceptible to failure over time thanks to poor heat tolerance.

      This is not a restoration. The RSX chips in the 90nm consoles are defective. The heating tends to help the defective solder balls on the die make contact which in turn makes the console turn on. When he sends this to the customer, they're going to see the repair has failed in a week and not bother to call back giving this person confirmation bias the repair was successful. This console is not repaired and the problem has been known for a while now.

    • @gabryproject
      @gabryproject Рік тому +1

      Los condensadores que usó se llaman "tantalio", y la capacitancia de cada uno suele ser de 330uF o bien, de 470uF. Y su voltaje entre los 2.5v y los 6v.
      Cualquiera en ese rango podrías usarlos.
      Lo importante es que por cada nec tokin hay que poner 4 condensadores de tantalio.
      Si reemplazas los 8 Nec tokin de la placa deberás hacer varios puentes en la placa.
      Y como consejo te diré que hay que tener mucha paciencia y maña en la reparación, es una placa complicada de manipular con un soldador, necesitas uno de mucha potencia y de temperatura para poder trabajarla.
      Y el donde comprarlos lo más fácil y rápido sería AliExpress, o bien, MercadoLibre si te pilla mejor por tema de costes de envío y aduanas.

    You’re lucky that in this case it was just the NEC capacitors that failed instead of the GPU & RSX as that’s the cause of the large majority of YLOD cases. That being said, they will fail eventually anyway.

    • @ys5108-w2p
      @ys5108-w2p Рік тому +14

      We can’t know for sure, since during soldering old and soldering new capacitors, the board is heated enough to “warm up” the RSX so that it turns on, after a while the problem will repeat (if the problem is in the RSX), so before soldering the capacitors, you need to read the SYSCON logs and look for errors. If the problem is in the RSX, then you need to change the RSX (warming up and reballing will not help, because after a while it will be YLOD again) to 65 or 40nm (there are instructions on the Internet). If the problem is in the capacitors, then you need to change the capacitors, delid the RSX, install CFW and set the fan so that the RSX temperature does not rise above 70 degrees, otherwise after a while it will be YLOD.

    • @LichKingTheFirst
      @LichKingTheFirst Рік тому +1

      Obtaining a GPU (RSX) from later PS3 versions can be a potential solution, but it's not always a complete fix. Some individuals have tried changing the CAPS, and there are those who attempt reflowing the GPU after delidding it. It's worth noting that reheating the GPU with the IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) can be a peculiar approach. However, the YLOD (or RED) issue tends to reoccur sooner or later.
      One common problem that people have identified is related to the use of lead-free solder, which complies with EU regulations. Over time and with exposure to heat, this solder can develop cracks. It's important to clarify that these cracks occur not in the solder balls connecting the GPU to the motherboard but within the GPU itself. As a result, PS3s with 90nm GPUs are prone to failure after extended exposure to heat, although this remains speculative.
      (Solder Composition: Lead-free solder typically contains various combinations of metals like tin, silver, copper, and sometimes bismuth. These materials have different properties compared to traditional lead-based solder.
      Reliability: One common issue with lead-free solder is its potential for increased brittleness and reduced durability compared to lead-based solder. Over time, lead-free solder joints can become more prone to cracking, especially when exposed to temperature variations and mechanical stress.)
      If you're experiencing issues with your PS3, it's advisable to consider alternative options. If backwards compatibility with PS2 games is not a concern for you, obtaining a later model of the PS3 may be a more reliable solution. To address your specific problem, utilizing SYSCON (System Controller) to diagnose the issue is recommended before taking any corrective actions.

      Normally its due to the rsx (gpu) overheating. Fixing it properly is quite hard and expensive since it basically involves replacing it with a gpu from a newer model ps3, what he did here; swapping out the nec tokin capacitors, is only a temporary fix in ~95% of cases

      @@blinkachu5275 We can’t know for sure, since during soldering old and soldering new capacitors, the board is heated enough to “warm up” the RSX so that it turns on, after a while the problem will repeat (if the problem is in the RSX), so before soldering the capacitors, you need to read the SYSCON logs and look for errors.

      Does your controller also turn on I had the same issue it was that the PS3 controller would turn itself on turning the console on if this is whats happening to you and you do not have an original PS3 controller take your apart and rip the battery out then throw it away and buy a new one but if it is an og genuine PS3 controller and not an after market one it’s fixable you just need one Philips head screw driver the size of the outside screws then take the back cover off theres two either side and one in the middle then slowly take the back cover off if the L or R buttons fall out its ok they can be put back in easily just clip them back in but anyways then you will see the battery now at this point your gonna wanna get your phone and take a picture of every part you remove before its removed so you will see the battery you can take it out with your hands or if thats too hard for you get a pair of pliers preferably bird beak pliers and pull it out like that then your gonna see a screw on the mother board take a picture of that screw and I can not stress enough how important that is since theres two other holes on the board and when I did this I didn’t know which one the screw went in but anyway use the same screwdriver you used to take out the first five screws on that one but put it somewhere else as that one screw is a little longer than the rest and once you took that screw out you should now lift it out SLOWLY and life it out to where the board is towards you or assuming you have the joystick slots towards you and you should see a little wire connected your too remove it slowly one side you must pull up and the other you must pull either back or fowards the taller pin is the one to pull up on and once its loose you should see a piece of rubber now get a piece of paper cut it to arould the same width but not length off the piece of rubber then fold it over three times it should be around the size of the piece of rubber then cut off any excess paper on that piece and put it below the rubber then put the rubber back on and reconnect the wire and then resemble the controller now one thing to note is that if you try testing it before putting and screwing the back cover on it will just press buttons and act possessed so you must fully resemble it first also if your not fully sure what to do still and even if you are I still recommend you do a youtube search and type PS3 controller how to fix random button presses you will get many tutorials showing you how to fix it

The NEC Tokins could be faulty but only if this console was rendering 24/7 for over 6 years. This was discovered from alot of highly known sources back after the release of the ps3. Sony decided instead of allowing it too play ps2 games,lets just charge them too play them on Playstation store. People who have updated this version during that update Sony pushed out,could no longer play ps2 or ps3 games due too the system having the ylod virus.
