IBM PC 300GL
The PC 300GL used the Celeron, Pentium I, Pentium II and Pentium III throughout its lifetime. Celeron-based models had processors clocked at 333, 366, 433, 466, 500 or 533 MHz; Pentium I models had processors clocked at 133, or 166 MHz; Pentium II-based models had processors clocked at 350, 400, 450 MHz; and Pentium III-based models had processors clocked at 450, 500, 533, 550, 600, 667, 733, 800 or 866 MHz.
These systems were packaged in two case form-factors, desktop and micro-tower. There were two variants of the desktop case, one with two expansion slots and one with four. Both variants had four drive bays. The micro-tower case had four expansion slots and four drive bays. - Навчання та стиль

@@andygozzo72 Yep, just what I was thinking. I worked for IBM in those days and we tore down hundreds (thousands?) of lease return PCs to harvest the motherboards (or planars as IBM called them) for service parts to repair capacitator plague machines.
I have done this so many times for so many friends' "garage finds", I've lost count, but never with such outstanding detailing and re-use of original parts. Deepest respect sir. Earned my subscription with ease.
I have lost the patience (and eyesight) of my youth, both required to restore or retro-mod/stealth old machines, so now I get my 'fix' watching others do it.
Sure do miss getting my hands dirty though (but not in the spiderweb/dustbunny sense).

We had these IBM 300's at work, but they were the desktop formfactor (horizontal, not towers (vertical). I don't recall the specific model, but the look of it with the blue accented case parts are memorable. This was at Intel Corporation where I used to work & I had since left over 15 years ago. But these 300's are a part of my memories working there.
This was so satisfying to watch. I had one of these PC's and ran games like Doom 1 and 2. And Network Q Rally. Those were great times.
Nice clean up job! I did a whole modern PC transplant using a 2005 IBM Net Vista. (grey version, mini tower) IBM made some cool cases back then.

I had one just like that one it surved the family well for more than 8 years. Shure we bought knew ones but that one stayed saved in a garage stil works with some problems but its a good piece of history.
omg the P3 500mhz successor of this series was my first own PC, got it for my 14th birthday.. gosh this case design is still nice to look at, imho the peak of IBM desktop PCs!
In the summer of 1999, my grandpa bought a brand new IBM computer with a 450 MHz Pentium III processor. His computer looked almost identical to this one. It had integrated audio like this one, but it had an nVidia AGP card for the video. I think his had a 10 GB Maxtor HD, but it’s been a long time, so I don’t remember the exact specs. At the time, I still only had a 150 MHz Pentium 1 at home, so I was very excited to try out all of the games that ran slowly at home. It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since then. Back then, when I was still a teenager, a 20 year old computer meant an 8088 processor running at 4.77 MHz, no hard drive, and CGA or Hercules graphics pouring out of an amber screen. It’s amazing how little computers have advanced in the past 20 years when you consider the previous 20 years of advancement that came before it.

It's amazed me that many standards are still there unchanged after 20 years: VGA interfaces, PS/2 port, 3.5" HDD size, ATX PSU and those power cables.
atx psu just upgraded from 20 pin to 24 pin and additional 4pin +12volt for processor, so its backward compatible
@@illussiondark You can use 20 pin psu on 24 pin motherboard, but most of the newer cpu/ motherboards consume more power than required for 20 pin and they can burn the connectors, because these 4 pin distribute electricity between them so they don't get hot. Like I used my rx 580 with 6 pin connector, when the needed one was 8 pin, but I knew that it is not using that much power especially undervolted.
@@ivaniliev2272 Actually interestingly most new PSUs can't work on older machines due to voltage pull differences. Older P3 and AMD varients like to pull 30-80W from the 5V rail and new PSUs aren't designed for that much pull especially sudden.
@@illussiondark Not really correct. ATX power supplies have changed significantly over the past 20+ years, with the biggest difference being which power rails most of the power budget is available.
There was a design change that started in the early 2000s where CPUs moved from being powered from the 5v rail to the 12v rail because it was more efficient for the higher power demands seen by the Pentium 4 and Athlon. PSU manufacturers then started adjusting the power rail load limits to move more of the overall power budget to the 12v rail and less on the 5v and 3.3v rails.
This eventually lead to the situation we have today where almost all of the modern power supplies' capacity is in the 12v rail(s), and very little is allocated to the 5v and 3.3v rails. So when you try to power an old system with a power hungry CPU with a modern PSU, it can result in the PSU constantly shutting down from overloads on the 5v and 3.3v rails.
If you look at a 15-20 year old power supply, you may see one where the 5v rail is rated at 30-50 amps, where a more modern PSU will only have 15-25 amps. The internal topology of power supplies has also changed significantly, from the old crappy inefficient half-wave group regulated output designs to modern APFC designs with buck regulated output.

This could be turned into a sweet retro gaming rig. Max out the RAM, get a Voodoo card, maybe upgrade the CPU to a Coppermine/Tualatin PIII...
I had great experience as a computer hardware engineer, hundreds of IBM 300GL machines , in our LAN / WAN Setup , Nostalgic still remember this model number.... No doubt great job👌👍
those Pentium 2s were HUGE on the market from mid 1997 to 2003.... great restoration ....

My parents had an IBM PC until they upgraded to a Compaq in 2004 when I was 5. I have very faint memories of it, but this might have been the one. Very interesting to see what hardware could have been inside. I now have seen many systems this old and older, I have a few pentium 3's and even an AMD 486 CPU in my collection.

I really like the full tower case of these it had a standard psu instead of the crappy small ones that are very difficult to replace. Well done tho.

Now upgrade it with maximum RAM, add a dedicated PCI graphics card like a Matrox 2D/3D accellerator with 16MB video memory and a sound card like the Sound Blaster AWE 64 Gold, add a 24x speed CDROM, replace the existing HDD with an 8 gigabyte hard disc, add a PCI USB adaptor card, get a Sidewinder-X 8 button Windows gamepad, reasonably new PS/2 keyboard + mouse combo and Creative Labs media speakers or Altec Lansing 3 piece speaker system.
Then you could have loads of fun with some classic old school retro gaming.
If you can afford it, get a PCI Voodoo 3 or Voodoo 4 graphics card as those don't need a 2nd gpu for 2D as they actually have 2D capabilities. You could also opt for the ATI 3D Rage Pro 32MB PCI graphics card though the Voodoo 3 and Voodoo 4 beat it in most games. There's no AGP slot on that motherboard so your options are limited.

@@MRNVCDIY Check the compatibility listings for your motherboard to ensure that it can handle the power demands of a PCI graphics card like the Voodoo 4. Some OEM systems back in the day had issues with high energy demand cards.
Just remember to be careful. That machine is like an old lady,... and some old girls can be a bit tempermental! 😁
@@MRNVCDIY Definitely get a good sound card though. The Creative Labs Sound Blaster AWE 64 Gold also had the media control center module that fit a 5¼ drive bay. Real sweet addition, plus some models even came with a remote! There's an ebay listing for the CT4520 model for only $45!

I was a computer tech for my college back in the early 2000's and they had an exclusive contract with IBM. I could probably still take this thing apart blind-folded
Good restoration. You're lucky you didn't receive an IBM system from just a year or two later from the Pentium 3 era because those things were horrible. They had basically 100% failure rates from the capacitor plague and IBM's own "Deathstar" hard drives.
I remember having to repair dozens of those crap machines back in the day. When they were still under warranty from IBM and you sent in a Deskstar drive, they'd actually send you back a Maxtor drive because theirs were so bad. Maxtor drives weren't much better and they usually failed in short order as well, but it was often outside the remaining warranty period so they could wash their hands of the matter.
Is that the IBM NetVista you're referring to GGigabiteM?
@@deere3350 the black Netvista mid towers, yep. The capacitors on the motherboard and in the power supply would always fail. Sort of like the Dell Optiplex GX and SX series in the 2x0 line.
Не отреставрировал а максимум помыл, внутри косы питания можно было стяжечками сделать а не так небрежно бросить, про проц вообще молчу, в его радиаторе оставил пыль, термопасту стоило поменять т.к. там уже камень вместо неё

Термопасту... вы серьёзно? Этот проц на холостом ходу даже без радиатора сможет работать, у него в максимуме тдп 20 вт, там греться нечему... Вот привыкли же все за последнее время к печкам по 90-120-150Вт... термопасты по 50 баксов, радиаторы с пол-корпуса с 8-ю термотрубками, или 3 вертушки 140мм с водянкой... а на старые процы ставили простенький радиатор без пасты на пластиковые защёлки, и жили - не тужили! 👍😁🤪

Better use PH bit for regular Phillips head screw, than PZ bit. They have different conical angles. Less chance to round the screw head. Great video!

I am still using and HP D530 desktop running XP Pro. around 21 years old. Works fine.
I also have an old athalon at least as old that I run win98SE on.
Have neither hooked to net so safe.

I was working for IBM when these were new, and my part of IBM took in equipment that came off of lease. I must have seen thousands of these things... as a matter of fact I probably have a couple of the desktop (horizontal case) versions around here somewhere.

you could have it as Celeron 300A, just buy 440BX (intel chipset) motherboard, that can overclock to 100 mhz FSB. Then you've got Celeron 450 Mhz, which was equal in performance to Pentium II 450. Which was highest Pentium II. :) It was one of the most famous overclock of all time.
@@warrax111 Had a katmai core PII that i overclocked to 500 MHz got hotter than hell but ran shit it was not supposed to.

Those too often skiping frames at regular intervals are hurting your eyes and making you dizzy, you should consider to not skip so often but instead speed up slow parts if you have to but don't cut video so often...
Also, I want to address all vintage pc (pentium era) reviewers, why most of you in the reviews don't change monitor refresh rate to higher? This was literary first thing that all geniune pc users (at least those with basic knowledge) did after installing graphic card driver - we did not use crt monitor with default 60Hz refresh rate, it is not how it was supposed to be. For most monitors we changed it to 85Hz, or at least 75hz to stop that visible flickering on the screen... For higher end crt's it was possible to go up to 100Hz or even 120Hz and higher for lower resolutions (but was not recommended because screen tended to loose sharpness and it was harder for internal components).

I owned a horizontal one from 2001 to 2007. Good memories. The power supply was so crappy if the power went off and on the pc would've turn on lol.

That is a safety measure for the motherboard. It can be disabled in the BIOS.

Awesome job! I had one DIY PC with Pentium 166MHz CPU & Quantum Fireball HDD 640MB forget how much RAM it is, especially i remember the network adapter is BNC not RJ45. Learing Red Hat Linux & play Red Alert at that time... That's all gone with the wind...
