How do I know what model my PS2 is?
To start, look at the sticker on the back of your unit and use the information below to determine your PS2's version number. Only released in Europe. The model # is SCPH-50004 with a GH-027 or GH-029 board. Same board as V10 but console comes with a new laser unit.
This video shows you everything you need to know about taking apart your Playstation2 Fat. If you need to replace the fan or the disk drive this video will show you how to get inside and disassemble your system. Since this system isn't the newest on the market anymore, it's cheaper to replace the parts yourself than it is to send them in for repairs.

I am one of the six people in the world who never owned a PS2.
And, you have inspired me to remove the case to my 2008 Denon to clean it (too much dust has built up over the years).
Glad to hear that, thanks for watching and the nice comment.
Chewed who never have a glass piece or like you can make a glass piece for glass PS5 laugh PS4
Dude I'm going to bite a glass PS2
6? make that 7
Auto-focus = constant blur. Manual focus = no constant blur. Excellent restoration.
Thanks for the helpful advice!
Agreed. And by the way, stickers on the top of the case looks just ugly.
Saw this comment, still didn't notice much blur 🙄
@@resEG As someone who holds things up, just to put them down again constantly, leave focus how you have. Been watching awhile, it's fine.
@@btr4yd fine is not what we strive for
I’m very glad my PS2 fat is still working perfectly. I have an original and while I don’t use it often, it comforts me in some weird way to know it is okay.
thanks for watching
I guess I am the only one who is unlucky with PS2's
Black FAT: PSU died
Silver FAT: Left in old house for over a decade in its box I use it for a month and broke it
SIlver slim: failed to read CD's
3x PS3 60gb backwards compatible: 2 YLOD 1 CD failure
I've got an original too. I want to say I bought it in 2000. Put it on lay-a-way at K-MART LOL. Anyway I dont mess with it anymore, but I've had it turned on in the last couple of years and it's still going strong. I also just like knowing it is there and in good condition. The thing looks brand new! I always took great care with my game systems. It amazes me what some of this stuff gets subjected to.
It was my childhood dream to own a ps2
After all these years i mean i just bought my own ps2 in 2022 and guess what almost 10 days passed but played only one single hour before it stuck on matrix logo then only black screen appears and there's no one at my town who can repair it 😭

It's pretty fun watching you. Restored devices are also in my area of interest. It's also nice to watch different techniques.👍
Thanks for watching!
that silver PS2 is beautiful, nice video
hanks for the visit
@@resEGTom Hanks?
Silver PS2, most aesthetically pleasing. Wish they could make the PS5 look like that for a throwback version.
I really agree with you, thanks for watching
@@resEG please ps3
Probably wouldn't be too hard with the PS5 and the different faceplates out there. Could be a custom job
@@Moayed66 the first PS3 was nice
Satin Silver is beautiful
my fat ps2 still works after been in the custom box I built in community collage shop. I stored it in box in storage rental place for like 10 years or more. still works after years in in box in storage thank god. My Dad bought it in early 2000's for me.
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️, most gaming consoles are of high-quality electronic components and are not easily damaged, so you only need some cleaning and simple maintenance. There are consoles from the seventies that work efficiently.
Love watching your videos giving these old consoles the TLC they deserve,so satisfying ❤
This is an honor for me, thanks for the nice comment, Have a great day
Pro tip: use the largest driver possible with screws. You did a bunch of P2 screws with a P1 driver. The driver will wear out faster and you run a high risk of stripping/damaging the screws.
_How good it is to see so much affection with someone in the family - A beautiful work - My congratulations it was beautiful and impeccable_
Thank you so much!, Our pleasure!
Great job in the restoration. Fixed many PS2 consoles and came across this many times where a minor adjustment to the laser setting seem to work. If I were to go through the whole restoration like what you did, I would only do it to keep it for myself and play it like crazy.
What minor adjustments do you mean? I have 3 ps2s and none of them work. Been troubleshooting the rsod for months now
@@Playamane22 Isopropyl on the optical lens with a a Q tip. That’s the minor adjustment. That will fix at least one of those PS2s. PS2s are old tech but because of it they will last forever. They were actually basically the first console that had more computing power than a Pinball machine. I wish I had played mine a little more when I had it. I didn’t give it enough love 😔
I love the classics, awesome job on the restoration. It makes me happy when the community dose a restore to preserve a piece of gaming History rockon.
Well said!, thanks for watching
Man! That just reminded me of when I had a PSOne and it stopped working. I opened it up and saw that the gears responsible for spinning the disk had come out of place, so I just put them back and the system worked. That's so nostalgic! Now I have a PS2 with a mod chip and softmod, a PSP with custom firmware, a PS3 with PSHen and a modded 3ds, which except for the modchip on the PS2, I modded myself.
I’m always down for a PS2 restoration! 😎👍✨
thanks for watching
@@resEG My pleasure man! I love watching anything to with video games, especially restoration ones. I’m definitely coming back for the next one. Awesome work! ✨👊😎

This makes me wanna go out and buy a PS2. Childhood memories
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
Bought one last week in the satin silver! Boxed with two controllers gave it good clean inside and out added a hard drive to it play games off. Brought back so many memories
I saw you flip through the discs for testing, and back to the top to pull out Sonic Riders, immediate thought process: "Ah yes, a man of taste..."
Many many thanks
The design of the PS2 was on point, still looks awesome 👌
I love watching you restore these game consoles. You always do amazing work. I really enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for sharing. My son had them all. He bought them himself.
Take care and be safe. Looking forward to seeing your next video
Would you ever consider doing how-to videos of your restorations? I would love to cleanup some of my old tech (PS2, Xbox controllers) but I have no idea what to use to clean it and how to clean it in a way that it still works after putting it back together. Love your content!
All i normally use for cleaning controllers/consoles is cleaning alcohol and Q-tips
If you want to know what to use to clean electronics, Isopropyl alcohol will work perfectly fine for that. If you want to clean the plastic shell of a console/controller, or a controllers buttons and membranes, warm soapy water and an old toothbrush will clean off any dirt/grime (just make sure to really dry them though before you put it back together)
@@w0nu Thanks for the information! Gonna try it out and hope for the best :D
he sprayed it down with isopropyl alcohol and 'dusted' it with a paint brush, he used a q-tip on the lens of the disk drive, cleaned the case..... not much restoring there really, its called basic maintenance of tech...
What makes this guy Odd tinkering good about what he's doing vs the other guys who restores stuff, this guys not just restores he restores with care and passion.
The ps2 is my personal favorite childhood game. My first ps2 was on 2006 on my 3rd birthday and always have fun playing with it to this day, the ps2 was my only console owned and already remember good memories 🙏🏻❤😁🎮
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
The best gift i ever had from my father! I still have my PS2! Miss you dad!
What a beautiful piece of technology! I've got a silver PS2 slim but i want the fat too! I also have 3 fat PS3, one is working fine after i gave a complete care and the two others with YLOD and bluray problems. Great job as usual! Sorry for my english, not my native language.
The sticker metod.... very usefull. GREAT VIDEO
Glad you liked it!
I remember full games being able to be stored in a small MB memory card. Now you need TB memory drives to store half of games. It’s insane
Games weren't as good graphically nor had as much complexity.. but this isn't all games. I own like 200 games on steam and most of my games are well under 5 GB. It's really only huge open world triple A games that demand alot of space..
PS2 memory cards had 8 MB of storage. No way of storing a whole game there. What do you mean?
@@luisman369 actually you can get 8mb 16mb 32mb 64mb and 128mb
@@geographynate I know. Point still stands
What are you talking about? memory cards are only for save files, the whole game is stored on the disc. FYI even PS2 games are around 1-4 GB, so it's really not that much different from how it is today
The GOAT of video game systems. I was born in 93 so I grew up with a ps2. Made many good memories on it with family and friends.
Amazing restoration my dude! 😃 Immensely satisfying to watch, and has inspired me to restore my own silver phat PS2 which is covered in ugly scratches. I wanted to ask: what paste did you use to buff away scratches? Thanks!
What scratches!?, This looked like a near perfect case to me with intentional dirt smeared across it!
@@UCHUJIN0 Lol yes that 'dirt' on the case made no sense at all and looked fake as hell. Nevertheless there are some valuable disassembly/reassembly instructions along with general cleanup and maintenance tips.
Lots of kids probably decked their ps2 out with stickers, which get removed and build up grime. Hence the soap and water, and the mystery paste to buff out any imperfections. But nothing ever happens to the shell of an old console I guess, according to some people
This is the model of PS2 I have! My little silver fat TV sat on top of it, too… I’m amazed how sturdy it is! Love that Y2K silver tech moment we had. 😂
I'll never forget how cool these things were. I loved the sound of the disk drive and the cooling fan.
So many people prefer the original console to modern emulators, its nostalgia. If you have fond memories playing this console as a child, nothing but an original console will do. It's a great feeling to relive happier times.
Can't believe you have one of those. That particular color/edition costed a lot of money when it first came out. I still have my PS2 with the original model (first set to be sold before changes).
Excelente vídeo. Me encanta el Playstation 2 👍🏻
thanks for watching
My sister and I played her fat ps2 a lot when we were younger. It still works. This restoration reminds me of Odd Tinkering.
thanks for watching
Who taught you to be so precize when restoring? I'd really like to be as skillful as you are. So, I could be able to restore my things by myself.
Many many thanks
Most people are self taught at first. You learn by doing. I started when I was like 5 or 6 with tearing toys apart to see how they worked. This continued on into my teenage years and adulthood. Tearing apart remote control cars and such and putting pieces together to make my own ect.. Practice makes perfect.
This is good old stuff man,and you restore it,you really made it man
Sorry for bad English
ahh the classic left analog stick with the missing rubber
Good memories of the past
Excellent 👍😊 restoration playstation 2 my childhood 😅 best memories from the past 🤣
Mine too!
After disassembling a fat PS2 on my own and watching this restoration, I gotta say that the slim is slightly less impressive. It's still impressive, don't get me wrong, but the motherboard of the fat PS2 is nearly the same size as the slim's, and it feels like most of the reason the fat PS2 was so big was just because of the hard drive bay and the built in power supply
Yeah but the slim 9000x series has built in power supply too.
@@natsudragonil83 oh dang I completely forgot about the 9000x! That one is super interesting
I really agree with you, thanks for watching
Yes, the slim 9000x series has a built-in power supply, but the fat ps2 still more impressive ua-cam.com/video/qY73VZdiR2g/v-deo.html
My PlayStation 3 went out a while ago and my PS2 is stick kickin like it's brand new. Love that console 🙌🏻

Trabalho maravilhoso! É muito relaxante ver a sua restauração do PS2. Você é muito minucioso, a limpeza do videogame, o cuidado com as peças do aparelho, tudo perfeito. Diria que seu trabalho é um ASMR de tão gostoso de assistir, peguei no sono.
So the red screen of death is all about cleaning and greasing? Cool job!
thanks for watching
Seems more like something keeping the drive from reading the disc... dirt could be a reason or could be drive motor or laser unit failure too...
Beautiful restoration, always so nice to see new life breathed into this old equipment. I still haven't found the perfect mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide; sometimes I think I use too much sometimes not enough. Have you noticed a difference in the time needed when using more?
*picks Sonic Riders* Now I know you're a person of culture.
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️, I played many games, but for video time I only insert one game but you can watch the sonic game from this like ua-cam.com/video/2GQJt722r2U/v-deo.html
Due to deterioration over time, thermal runaway occurs more frequently on PS2. I wanted to see that repair. Also, since I'm Japanese, the region is NTSC, so PAL shouldn't be helpful.
The fat ps2 is the best ps2, so many memories on my original black fat ps2. I pretty much exclusively use pc now, but all the old 3d consoles were so great. The ps1 and 2 were some of the best consoles.
Why are u not replace a system battery ?
Awesome video. Thanks for putting all the tool and cleaning supplies in the description.

I love the ps2, ps3 and ps4, it reminds me when i was like 3, 4 or 5 years old my dad bought me a ps2 in black, so much nostalgia and memories

Glad you like them!
I actually did this to my ps2 but since my is the original model 39001 I rip the cable for power supply and the cable for the controller port by accident I had to replace them it wasn't easy trying to replace them because I had to be very careful about the other cables that were still working or still attached to the motherboard and to make it worse I lost some of the screws
I'm sorry for that, thanks for watching
Makes me wonder, who the heck takes care of these consoles before they end up in your hands? Especially the condition of their household cause damn, this makes me sad yet happy to see you restore these systems to their formor yet unyielding glory

Good restoration, although one thing I should note is that the clock battery is dead on that system (You can tell by the homepage since its just a dot and nothing is moving, its supposed to move in the circle pattern like you see here ( ua-cam.com/video/Cxk1gI2sg3w/v-deo.html ) just thought I would mention that going forward, but good restoration nonetheless.
