Hey Peter! Deerleap sends regrets on the Land Rover. Recently saw a bumper sticker on one just like yours, “Land Rover - Turning owners into mechanics for over 70 years”.
No daughters or sons, but I had a great dad. And mum is stil alive at 91. Great age. So, have fun with your family Peter and let them remind you as I remembered my father and live as long as my mother still does!
Hmmm broken Salisbury Axle, normally pinion bearing failure/collapse, drain diff oil and inspect the oil. careful driving the Land Rover in front wheel drive....its a weird driving experience!!!
So lovely to see your daughter, Kaitlyn. I miss her sourdough videos. A note on the Land Rover - all series 3 LR came with salisbury diffs here in Australia. I don't remember having to overhaul one - except for the guy who forgot to fill the diff with oil. From memory to overhaul a special spreader tool is required to remove the crown wheel. Best of luck I would suggest leaving it to an expert as lapping the crown wheel to the pinion and getting the correct clearances and tooth engagement is quite the art form. I apologise, also, I had not even missed the last episode as I have been flat out since my return from the US visiting the Anapolis boat show and friends in Texas. Nice to see you are back. G.
I think the group of 4 people on the dock were interested background spectators of the 'beer of the week' segment. They seemed to be following as closely as we were!
How odd... I wonder if it was a custom casting (possible). The Dana 60 (in the time I worked for them) used a cast iron carrier with pressed axle tubes spefic to the model/install, plug welded.
Peter it’s so good to have you back, my Sunday evening in the uk just wasn’t the same without you last week. I really hope you get your Landy sorted. Enjoy your time with your daughters.
Peter, I noticed on several occasions that poem runs even further "bow down". It is my opinion that she would benefit from a hundred axtra gallonsvof diesel, when you install the Beta, under the cockpit. That 700 pounds and down sizing to 1/4 inch chain should make her more stable and better balanced.
Hi Peter, many years ago I drove a long wheelbase Landrover that broke a rear drive shaft,we took it out and removed the broken splined end and drove it as a front wheel drive until a new one could be installed. This was in 1971,cheers Roly🇬🇧.
Peter MI 5 here ,you are being placed on a watch list for A. Abuse of an English Icon ,and B. Playing the Sky boat song indicating that you are clearly a Jacobite!
Well Pete if you can t least drop the drive shaft and just go front wheel drive be the go. Un like my Disco 1 which has blown engine at least you can still use yours and at least it will keep it regular like and not sitting. With your deep watere fords you obviously need that amount of chain on Poem but storing some heavy stuff at the stern should solve that. Nice job on the water install. Keep at it.
My daughter also lives in Boston, Braintree actually, and I wish I had the kind or relationship you have with your daughters. Congratulations on achieving that in this complex and confusing world.
My father had one daughter and three sons. I have one daughter and no sons. Very happy for you to have two daughters., from what I've seen, they are lovely people.
Hoi Mister Knowles, although we live in Amsterdam, we enjoy your video’s. Word of the week: daughter: my daughter gave birth to her daughter on 10-11-2023. The baby is just now 48 hours young. Thank you for all the video, we keep watching. A big thank you from Amsterdam from Wicky and from my hubby Jurgen
My daughter and son are both in their late 20’s. They are such wonderful people. Take advantage of your time to see your kids. Time passes too quickly. Looking forward to your fiddle tune!!!
Looks like that rear end has 2 piece rear axles. I’ve seen those occasionally strip between the axle and the outer wheel hub flange. Remove the those outer caps that look like grease caps. See if you have spinning there on either side. But ultimately you probably should just remove the diff pan and inspect. Those can be splined or keyed. You might get lucky and be able to replace a key.
You can put almost any rear end that will fit in the frame. It's not hard, just got to find a shop that makes/repairs drive shafts. But finding a rear end with matching gears may be troublesome. Or, as you said make her front wheel drive, give the diff and pinion to a machinist to make you a new ring an pinion. You say the diff never got no hard work. Probably wasn't put together right. Takes a lot of force to strip a diff.
If it helps your decision. I've a series 3 109 which had similar rear axle problems. I couldn't fix it immediately either, so removed the rear prop shaft and half shafts as you were contemplating. I drove on front wheel drive for a couple months without problems. I'd occasionally run it off the tarmac to release any wind up in the front drive train, but I'm sure you know the procedure. So I can evidence it works and only costs a few hours work.
Thanks for all the hard work you put into sharing life’s ups and downs. I love your authenticity and appreciate the enormous effort that goes into getting your stories online week after week. Kudos. Chris.
I'd go for the FWD intermediate option, gives you mobility while other things needs attention and finding parts/sollution to fix the rear axle problem. Regarding your instrumental part I'd prefer to refer to a Swedish author (Verner von Heidenstam); "There's more beauty in a broken string then a bow never drawn" (my translation)
Though I have been married twice and have a current girlfriend I have never had children that lived. I was to have a son but it was a choice between the life of my then wife or the fetus. So I have had neither son nor a daughter. So happy you get to see both of your lovely daughters. Have fun and show a tad of the other side of both countries! Cheers!
Hi Peter, there are a few series Salisbury axles on UK e bay not badly priced either, Do get in touch if i can help source / send parts or even strip an axle and send you the bits you need. Pity i can not fit an axle in my case or i would be tempted to pay you and Victoria a visit with my DAUGHTER.😄 Ed
I have 2 daughters also and it has been the best experience for me ever too. My life was in black and white before kids and now it is in colour. Don't miss going to see ol' ironsides while you are in Boston, a mecca for wooden boat enthusiasts.
I missed not having an episode to watch last week. Threw my whole week off. Like you, Peter, I have two daughters that I’m very proud of. Make sure your girls teach you the proper technique to correctly pour a beer. Cheers!
My front prop shaft (defender) broke off heading into Inuvuit - probably because I had raised the suspension. Anyway; removed the prop shaft in about 15 minutes. Engaged the center diff and drove the rest of the trip as a two wheel drive without issue. You may find that the temp solution you suggested will last you for years - not just months. BTW: One daughter at UVic and the other just started at Queens (so just became 'empty nesters'). Best wishes on your travels to see your daughters - from Euphemia II.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED your fiddle playing! And what is the name of that tune? I know I've heard it before on my Celtic music station. Hey we're leaving Friday Harbor next week, to visit our two daughters too! Life is so Good x Teri aka fuzzy slipper
Hey Peter☝️enjoy your precious time with your lovely Daughters. Our 2 sons live at the other side of the world in Japan and although we now try and see them at least once a year saying goodbye at the end of our stay gets harder every time. Keep up the great work 🙌(from the U.K.)
Peter , it's nice to see you have been able to get back to "the tube" ! If your Landie was mine, i would make it usable for the time being . But i'm worried about the rear axle wheel bearings . If you remove the half shafts , you would have to plug the holes at the axle that will be there if you remove the half shafts . Without plugging these the axle will not be able to hold gear oil and the wheel bearings will therefore be without lubrication . I'm sure you have been thinking about that as well and i'm also sure you can and will work something out .
Remove propshaft, piut in 4WD and drive around in front wheel drive if there isnt't too much debris floating around in the diff. You could always pull the axles too if there is loads of metal floating around. Not ideal, but it's some transport.
Missed your video last week. Glad you are back. Sorry about your truck. Hard to be without transportation. Enjoy your travels East and spending time with your Daughters. Cheers.
I mentioned (above) about a broken prop but also, on a different trip, had stripped spline on half axle while towing a small trailer. The temp solution for that one also involved locking the center diff and driving as two wheel drive. Nothing else was done. That got us back from Alberta (to Vancouver) while still towing the trailer - with no further issue. Replaced the whole rear end when I got back because it was all worn out - not just the splines that stripped. Upgraded while I was at it.
If its a dana 60 center section. See if you can get the axle bill of materials number. Aka tag number. With that parts for a dana 60 are easily available usually. Really need to pull the rear cover to see if the ring and pinion broke. The arb air locker diff broke or the axles broke.
Thank you, the problem is the ring and pinion are Series Rover specific and rare and costly. There's no trouble finding them, it's finding them cheap that's the issue. I've been trying to determine the part number for the R&P
@@TravelsWithGeordie you have to open it up to know what you're going to need. Might be easier to find a donor rear differential. Probably not on the island though.
Peter. Don't write off your Diff yet. It could just simply be a broken half shaft or stripped halfshaft flange. Did you try locking your ARB and see if you got the drive back. Sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs. But as a Land Rover specialist... I see this rather a lot. Good luck Marc
Hello Peter. Excellent content. On the LR I wondered about putting it in FWD. Don’t see why not but don’t delay in fixing up the rear. Most 4WD front diifs are a bit smaller (diameter-wise) that the rears. My Toyota 4x4 has an 8” rear and 7.5” front. Point is that fronts of a part-time 4x4 are there to assist, not be the main motive power. Dunno if this also applies to LR. Also, unsure if you can / should run a rear Series LR axle without shafts, but someone will know. Are there any snags on the bearings or oil retention etc? Getting a replacement Salisbury rear unit might be a challenge but you may just need the crown wheel and pinion. I hope you can do the necessary diagnostic before having to drive at all. You might be able to leave the shafts in situ with the diff out if you build a cover plate to seal it all up with the prop off, maybe? Could it be a broken shaft? Thanks for the episode. Great that you’ve done enough to the water system to come back to. It’s not just what you do but what you have to return to and the plumbing will be nice thing. Enjoy the break!
a co-worker of mine blew up the rear diff in his chevy blazer, he daily-drove it to work for a year in fwd before he eventually replaced the rear. the only problem he had was difficult handling, especially in turns running it in fwd.
The front diff is the same as the regular rear so it's plenty stout. The knuckles are U joints not CVs so tight turns get jerky. The rear shafts have to cone out or the diff will turn and could jam from the broken teeth.
If you don’t like your faucet being so low drill holes in wood. If you used pre-milled standardize, one by stock, you can cut it to whatever length you would like and then drill the hole. The first hole should be in a block of wood that fits between the sink and the back wall and drill a hole that’s the same size as the hole in the countertop so that will allow you to mount the Fossett using its usual hardware. The second board should be at least as long, if not a little longer so that if you were to say, use a router to make a round over on the top board, then on the second board, you could router in a cove and have a basic OG design going. You could also just make them all the same length so that you could round over the top and outer edges and just have a square or rectangular tower that your faucet would sit on top of. Cut the hole in the second block so that it’s big enough to go around the mounting hardware on the first block then position them appropriately and screw to the top block. Once you have all the blocks screw together, do whatever sanding and finishing you want to the block then disassemble attach faucet and reassemble. By screwing them together, you can easily assemble and disassemble when you want to change out the faucet and reclaim that faucet. You could stack as many of these boards as you want. Just remember that the bottom board you will need to make The whole, smaller or cut it, so there are tabs sticking into the opening, so that you can use another matching block underneath the counter to drive screws up and into to hold it to the counter.
I've had good luck replacing the ENTIRE rear unit ( diff, axles, suspension ) from Subaru. You have to figure the drive shaft. But there are millions of surplus parts out there and the parts are cheap. It may be a sacrilege to make a "frankenmonster", but it will be far easier to repair down the road.
the big problem is that this is a 4-wheel drive vehicle, so the front and rear axle gear ratios have to be an exact match. that's why even though peter's rear axle is based on a dana 60 he can't easily and cheaply go out and buy a new dana 60 gearset because land rover used a non-standard gear ratio. so, he either has to find an original set of gears or a supplier who can custom-make a set of matching gears in the correct ratio..
@fab rats @fabrats you got parts for this? Not sure how to tag them. They build off road vehicles and use those rears. Good chance they would have what you need are at least know where to get it.
The most important thing is to use whatever material is already in the boat to avoid dissimilar metals corrosion. If starting from scratch, Silicon bronze is ideal.

Put in 4 wheel drive and run it.
Why is using brass fasteners below the waterline in bad taste? What you supposed to use, silicon bronze?
The most important thing is to use whatever material is already in the boat to avoid dissimilar metals corrosion.
If starting from scratch, Silicon bronze is ideal.
I'm at the 6min mark, so forgive me if this ends up not applying. What not just weld the diff like the drift boys do?
Aaaaaak!
@@TravelsWithGeordie I know....but if it works as a temp solution maybe? Either way I hope the best for your situation.
Go to any Wrecking yard
If its just a dana 60 center section those are plentiful and cheap in the US
The problem is the R&P is not Dana but Series Rover specific
Did you check the drive shafts????????????????????
Good point!!
Much too much crunching sound for that.
Are you able to swap the 3rd member with something else?
No, the parts are available, just have to save up.
Complications: war, pestilence, famine, natural disaster, can't feed ur children, birth defects, neighbors last butt not least ' OLD AGE '
Hi - Have I been blocked - haven't seen a story in 2 weeks???
Please please please....do not play the violin ever again on your show bro! I love your expertise on the boat work, your technical insights! But never ever corrupt my eardrums without warning! 🙄😔 Stick to carpentry bro! 👍😅😅
Heh, its likely I will, but I'll give fair warning....
