    I think when she said, “More of us wears away” she meant that living as they did, no longer in a thriving and developing civilization but just surviving in stasis for thousands of years, was making a bunch of their knowledge & memories fade.

      Doubt it was intentional but there are theories that human memory just has limits so that even if we lived forever or figured out a way to not make our body deteriorate, our memory simply has a max capacity. And I mean imagine yourself how cloudy and segmented your memory of childhood is, imagine if that was over 100 years ago

      I mean if a cataclysm hits and ends many people from your country with no access to other sources to rebuild is not strange that slowly it'd dillute the little knowledge they already preserved. Idk why anyone would think isolation would make it easier to preserve your society lol

    Disney threw this and Treasure Planet under the bus to specifically kill their 2D department, they did them so dirty.

      What's sad too is that both Atlantis and Treasure Planet are films that would have had a better chance at being good live action adaptations as opposed to all the other ones we got. I'm glad they're not yet, since I don't want this generation to work on them due to the lack of quality in what we've been given so far.

      I wouldn't say they made this movie to kill their 2D department. Disney just didn't have a good record back then. Between Tarzan and Princess an the Frog, they had:
      * Dinosaur
      * Fantasia 2000
      * Emperor's New Groove
      * Atlantis
      * Lilo & Stitch
      * Treasure Planet
      * Brother Bear
      * Home on the Range
      * Chicken Little
      * Meet the Robinsons
      * Bolt
      Other than Emperor's New Groove and Lilo & Stitch, none of those were particularly successful. They definitely weren't trying to "kill" 2D animation; they thought they could rescue it by showing it wasn't just for children's princess movies, but most of the movies they released during that time weren't appealing to Disney audiences and so weren't successful.

    years later we discovered living coelacanths basically unchanged from the fossils from millions of years ago.

    I'm pretty sure the atlantean's degradation due to a mix of the atlantean's immortality causing complacency alongside the King's actions to supress their past knowledge and technology to not repeat the past. (Milo literally says that the King purposely hid it, while the King confirms it, saying that he doesn't want anyone to misuse the crystal's powers like he did.)
    also for milo and Kida, I think it's so awesome that Kida likes him not because he's manly or a warrior, she's already all those things and that's not what she's looking for, her interest is to reclaim Atlantis' past greatness and knowledge and He is the only one who could help her and provide her what she wanted. basically they were both passionate about learning about Atlantean Culture.

    • @jacobdavis6916
      @jacobdavis6916 6 місяців тому +9

      I think the degradation is more due to the fact of taking a survival tact over a more established civilization. What is the point of writing if you are buried for all time? What use are your flying machines if you never leave the small city? A few centuries go by not using this knowledge and you'll forget it. You lean how to speak because everyone still speaks but writing really isn't essential.

      One addition to your train of thought (it's not bad, I think you might like this): Atlanteans are not immortal, but they have extremely long lives. Let's assume they age in (more less) the same rythm (all grandparents are in the same generation and age at the same rythm, all parents are in the same generation and age the same, all sons around the same age are in the same generation...)
      How old is Kida's father? Extremely old. And what's the average age most of current Atlantis population looks like? Around Kida's age, or a bit older. That means most, if not all, the generation of the disaster has passed away (except for the King, and maybe very few others) and took the knowledge with them; causing this rift (that Atlanteans have long lives doesn't help; taboos are challenged as generations renew and reshape culture and its needs; if your society renews very slowly... taboos will stick for longer).
      It's interesting, and I think that's why it comes as shocking and incomprehensible, the idea that a culture actively wants to sabotage itself into dark ages, later than rebuild, thrive and learn from the past, rather than simply break every link with it.

    Re: plot holes - an additional bit of info you may not have focused on very much is another thing that the king said - that he had tried to use the Crystal as a weapon of war and it backfired (literally buried the city), and that's part of the reason why he hid it - not just to save Kida, but to stop anyone from misusing it again. And he said that it's evolved to be capable of thought, and seemed scared of the power it possessed. So he hid it. How exactly that made the whole culture deteriorate so much? That's for real a bit of a plot hole.
    At least the king not being able/willing to teach his people to read their language somewhat makes sense, since he's blind and clearly tried to erase the knowledge of the Crystal from their consciousness.
    Fun observation: the king can see at the start of the movie. He holds Kida as her mother is pulled into the Crystal, covers her eyes and tells her not to look - but he keeps looking. That's when he got blinded.
    The middle bit where you feel the movie skipped over too much - well. That's because they ran out of money. They had enough to do the first half of the movie, and then saved some for the ending - the middle bit of exploring Atlantis sadly had to get rushed/cut.

    To explain the whole "Losing our culture" thing, you have to realize that when they went underground they cut off so much of they're culture, learning systems, and so much more, also you also have to think as well, many of the current people living in Atlantis were very young at the time of the great flood and were only just beginning to learning how to read andwrite Atlantian, and were only beginning to learn about they're culture, so with what little they had in terms of culture over thousands of years, after learning a new way of life and living for so long, the culture would die out slowly because they don't have ways of learning more about the culture unless it was through painting or just scraps that were left intact

In 1909, Rose O’Neill created paper dolls of the cupids to sell and in 1912 Germany started making these dolls out of bisque (or porcelain). Overtime these dolls were made from other various materials such as a composition material, celluloid, and plastic.”

    When Kida fuses with the crystal and she and the previous kings within ensured Milo all would be well, I presume Milo did not anticipate that the crystal had any defensive capability after how docile its behavior was while being taken. But I believe that it was a ploy to deceive Rourke and the rest of his party into a feeling of assuredness, with Milo and the rest in an accidental converse gloom.
    But the crystal's power is very noticeably proximal; it has a range to its influence, and it's shown throughout the movie. With the abductors' help, it can reach and remedy the failed defenses that did not successfully repel them in the first place, possibly cause an explosion to kill the crew, and through Kida's body, return to the city and establish order and safety again.
    But Milo and company go after it and rescue the crystal themselves instead.

    Think a lot of the "lost culture" beats are justified by Atlantis being mostly flooded. Like the mural that we saw Milo and Kida dive for.
    So after losing most recorded knowledge the King just decided to not attempt to restore it or record it anew to avoid recovering the knowledge that destroyed Atlantis in the first place. He may even have mandated that certain things not be taught or recorded, he certainly had the authority and motivation.
    Even if the population that lives now is mostly the same as back then, over hundreds of years of not using your written language you'll get pretty rusty. This being said, there's a theory to be made that most Atlanteans don't live such long lives and that Kida and the King age so slowly due to their proximity to the Heart. We see children, babies, and young and old adults among the main population. They would definitely be a thriving and extremely populous people if they were all basically immortal and reproduced as much as the people we saw.
    Speaking of the power that destroyed Atlantis, at the very beginning if you look closely you'll see a massive energy explosion in the background that looks like a sun. This is the event that causes the tsunami that sinks Atlantis. The King talked about using the power they had to wage war, but it being too much for them. Atlantis basically had the ability to utilize nukes, and they detonated one so close it destroyed Atlantis. When I realized that the tonality of the story shifted a bit. Atlantis is basically a post-apocalyptic nuclear society that would've dominated the world if it hadn't destroyed itself first. It's a cautionary tale about the dangers of technology, the treachery of war and desiring power. If Commander Rourke had carried the Heart back to the surface and sold it to the highest bidder we'd have a new super-power primed to destroy itself and the world. Not to mention...genocide. The stakes are actually immense for a Disney movie.

      Plato used the quote about Atlantis in 360 BC. In 1,600 BC the volcano under Santorini exploded ending the Minoan civilization. In the year 2000 archeology found that Crete was also home to the Minoans and that the Minoans had pure copper (Crete was devastated by the tsunami created by Santorini's explosion). Prior to 1900, the only place in the world that had pure copper was the upper part of Michigan. Archeology found that copper was mined in Michigan for hundreds and hundreds of years, but finding a camp with a 1600 BC debris were not to be found because the area had been mined and over mined.
      So, when the Minoan civilization came to an end, the ancient Egyptian empire also withered because the Egyptians traded heavily with the Minoans. This left a power vacuum in the Middle East and it is the reason that the Greeks conquered Egypt. The Pharaohs of Egypt were Greek.
      The effects of Santorini's explosion were described (and exaggerated) in the book of Exodus in the Bible. Water turning to blood? Iron, shot into the atmosphere, rained down, causing the water to turn red and give it that taste that mimics blood. Amphibians raining to Earth? Yep, happens in volcanic explosions. Flies/pestilence? The atmosphere cooled and became moist (the clouds from the explosion drifted south, the explosion came in late winter, early spring). Hail? Thunderstorms from a wet atmosphere. Darkness? Again, the clouds drifted south. Finally, a plague that killed children? After a disaster, there are plagues and young children have under developed immune systems.

    There was a direct to TV sequel that was basically a TV pilot, much like other sequels around the same time (Aladdin 2, Stitch the Movie, etc.). It had the heroes come back to the surface to investigate rumors of lost Atlantean artifacts around the world. It played on the idea that all ancient cultures were related and had some really cool introductions to the overlap between history and mythology. Would have been an awesome show, but I guess they never got the greenlight to make more.

    Man, a Tom Holland?Zendaya-lead live action remake of this would actually go hard. I'm normally against that sort of thing, but the vibe is right.

    This was a film that I always saw or recorded when it came on tv. A lot of Disney's 2000s films between the Renaissance and Revival are amongst the most underrated Disney films.

    'You don't watch this for the animation or character dessign'... well, I do XDDD
    From an animator's prespective, this is a masterpiece XDDD The lead dessigner from this movie is actually comic book artist Mike Mignolla... you may know him from his most famous character: Hellboy.
    If you see the original concepts they are actually awesome; the way the story of each character is told by their dessign is incredible and a masterclass in visual storytelling...
    ...but on the actual storytelling concerning the plot... I must concede to you; is actually a mess XDDD
    The overall characters, jokes and mood of the movie as you say, is I think more enjoyable for an adult... but the story is actually simplified for kids... and both aspects do not harmonize all that well. Kids buy the simplistic plot but don't get the adult jokes... adults love the characters but find the story flat and simplified. With a simillar premise; 'The Road to El Dorado'; by Dreamworks I think is a better mix of both, for example... and I don't even remember the music of Atlantis; so 'forgetable' may be a good adjetive, sadlly T.T
    Storywise, the movie explains that the king did not only hide the Cristal to avoid the fate of Kida, but also cause that tech was used in an extremelly destructive way, so to avoid been misussed; he basically banned all ancient knowledge... but if the Atlanteans are inmortal... wouldn't they remember how to read, for example? Even if the king banned to teach it to new generations?
    They are two possible answer for me... one; Atlanteans are inmortal thanks to their cristals... but their memory is human. They cannot remember ALL their thousands of years of continuous experiencies... so they keep making new memories and the old ones get been forgoten... so if the King bans the transmition of knowledge, this keeps been lost... but then, if they kept reproducing... why is there not overpoppulation if the old ones don't die?
    For me the second option is the rigth one: only thoose connected to the main Cristal; the royal familly (Kida and the King) are really inmortal; the rest may live long lives... but still die of old age; so none of the atlanteans who survived the sundering (except for the two royals) actually knew old Atlantis (and Kida been a todller at the time; this only leaves the King) so with the ancient knowledge been forbidden, only a part of the Atlantean tradition has been passed on to this generation... leaving all the high tech out of the picture by dessign of the King.
    BUT none of this is explained in the movie... so I can accept it as a plothole. And I agree that Milo gets TOO mutch power by been able to know more about them than themselves. Serves his character but cheapens the plot. Also, why when Kida fuses with the Cristal does nothing to figth back? To protect his father? Does the Cristal have a pacifist will so it only reacts to cataclismic events as the volcano but not to a bunch of pirates?... non explained. As it is told in the movie; is too simplistic.
    Also, the knowledge of Milo comes from a book written by somebody who studied about Altantis but never got to see it? How does this work? This is not how archaeollogy works. Also, the Atlantean language is the mother language of all the languages in the world... so Atanteans can speak ANY language even if they never had contact with it?
    A modern linguist who studies latin, will be able to learn moore esilly spanish, french, italian or portuguesse cause he could see the words, verbs and grammar that come from a common place... but you still need to study them and see the differences; you won't be able to simply deduce everything from a short conversation.
    Yeah, I'm nitpicking; but again; this movie wants to be a kids movie but still is more targeted towards adults... as an adult I want to believe the movie... but the movie gives me arguments feeble enougth only a childs suspense of disbelief would hold... mmmm. Not ideal.
    Still love the movie, is a hiden gem of animation but I totally get why it did not get the audience it deserved... cause it doesn't know whitch audience is that. Movies are more than just story, though; some aremade to be moved by it, some to be laugth at, to create disgust... and this is visually a masterpiece.

    Mike Mignola, creator of the comic book Hellboy, was responsible for a lot of the style of the film. He did character design and production design for the movie. That's why it stands out so much. Also, James Newton Howard's score is very underrated , I think the music gets lost a lot in the discussion of Disney Scores from that era because its a departure from the Broadway style scores of the 90s and because the three scores he did for this early 2000s era are (all pretty great) are inextricably associated with the commercial failure of the three films they accompanied -Atlantis, Dinosaur and Treasure Planet-

    A lot of people point out the similarities to the Stargate movie story line and characters.
    But there is another show predating this movie that shows a lot of elements which must have been inspiration for the overall design.
    "Nadia - Secret of Blue Water" is an Anime series that is also set on an steampunk/Jules Verne-like submarine looking for Atlantis.
    Also, the Ghibli movie Laputa has some blue crystals and giant stone robots the guardians here were reminiscent of.
    All in all, Disney tried to become somewhat more mature with this movie, but it didn't last long enough do kick off a new era for them.
    And Kidakagash (yes, she's hot) might be the most hidden Disney princess.
    Another hidden Disney Gem from that time is "The Emperor's now Groove"
