I love how Jane can have a crazed, almost manic look in his eyes at the beginning--then go to a shocked, fervently desperate look when he shoots that man--and finally, a heart-breakingly tormented one at the end. To be able to express emotions like that with such subtle and convincing facial cues is the mark of a good actor. Well done, Simon Baker.
this may be from years ago but i must say, his acting is amazing, such emotion displayed with simple facial movements, but in a way that is easily readable.

I love how you can see how much it's hurting Jane and in turn, how much Jane hurting is causing Lisbon pain. I love how you can see it in his eyes in the beginning how bad he wanted it and how he was so willing to sacrifice everything to get it. And when he starts talking that his life would be worth it to throw away if Red John would be caught, Lisbon looks so devastated and it's beautiful how much they care about each other
The first minute is what *makes* the second half incredible - because we see what it means to Jane to get Red John, what every lead, every clue, every witness and accomplice means, and yet he still - without hesitation - kills a potential lead to save Lisbon.
Lots of people didn't see romantic love until seasons later. But these scenes show they're definitely in love with each other by the end of the first season. Like others have pointed out, Lisbon was in tears begging Jane to choose life over death (her over RJ), and the very next scene sees him shooting Hardy (thus saving Lisbon) over trying to squeeze some info from a direct link to RJ. He proved he heard the message. Him savoring the orange in the sun at the end confirms that he was starting to enjoy life again.
looking back on this now you can see that after this jane solidified it in his mind that his love for lisbon was a barrier from him getting red john as he would always save her, as he literally says. i think this knowledge caused him to pull away from her and deny how he feels for her, not to mention that his existence and his feelings for her puts her in danger. its a triple entrendre.
@@smurfyday yes and as someone once put it, in classic jane mentalism style, his love for her screams in its silence. every time you see him tease, act nonchalant, shift the focus onto her reactions (as he knows she is just as committed to hiding her feelings as well), pull away from her, freeze her out, shows his love for her. the very first jisbon scene (that reoccurs as a throwback symbol of their love in season 7) with the origami frog, in the very first episode, exemplifies the story they are trying to tell when he smiles with bright authenticity at her joy and then just as quickly dissolves it like a snuff to a flame.
This is one of the best finales ever. I love the contrasting emotions as Jane goes from shock to anguish to sadness, but still manages to find happiness in the now. The message I love here is that despite Red John still roaming free, the sun shines, there are oranges in trees, and he still has Lisbon. How happy and placid. And choosing Chopin was a nice touch!!
He went from believing losing his life in the pursuit of Red John wouldn't be that big of a deal, to appreciating the small, nice things in life, as well as the people who are part of it. He took what Lisbon told him to heart.
You can see it like this : First, Jane was angry at Lisbon because they or she could had gotten red john. Then the second half. The guy woke up and shot an officer, and perhaps Lisbon. The thing is, He could had gather information from the guy, and without a doubt that crossed his mind for a moment. But then, in a nick of time, he chose to save Lisbon, rather than getting Red John.
@@77sida I disagree. He chose Lisbon. There's a difference between caring about your own life and caring about the life of someone close to you. Jane also shows in the following seasons on multiple occasions that, while he would like to survive the whole thing, he would still sacrifice himself in a moment if it meant catching Red John. I honestly think this show is kind of like Gladiator in that regard. He continues because he feels he owes it to his family to strike down the evil that stole their lives. He lives for that and not for himself. This is (in my opinion) very well shown in the numerous moments in the show where he exhibits true caring and love for Lisbon but won't allow himself to cross that line until Red John is taken care of.

@@jenniferaguilera2087 I don't remember the scene in question, and while I respect your opinion, I always viewed Jane's actions in seasons 1-6x08 as him having a wholly singular purpose of destroying Red John and getting revenge. Lisbon was always the counter-balance to that, and while frequently acknowledging how important and influential she was to him, he treated her as a married man. I believe that in Jane's mind he couldn't accept that his family was truly 'gone' until he'd avenged them. His quest was wholly singularly focused. I think going down to Bermuda (or wherever he was when Abbot found him) was the beginning of him starting to slowly accept everything he'd pushed away since the beginning of the series, finally culminating in him confessing to her on the plane. It's a great show, and I like how people are able to have their own opinions that aren't really right or wrong for the most part.
Still so glad someone gave Simon and Robin their respect as actors and leading parts after their typecastable roles in “Red Planet” and “The Craft” respectively. Thank you CDs, wouldn’t have been the same without them or you.
When they returned the girl to her family, and everyone was crying, you could just look at Jane's face and tell he was thinking about his dead daughter. Then, when he took the orange I imagined he started thinking about all the good things in life and that there would always be another day, and that Lisbon was still there for him. ;) Good Ol' Oranges!
Very astute, well observed. This is why all the people saying the series should've ended with RJ's death missed half the show. It wasn't just about revenge. It was about healing. Killing RJ would only fix one but not the other. For that you need Jisbon.
I used to watch those as a kid but now I'm more into The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, Bones and Castle because they focus more on the characters and that's what I enjoy the most.
In the end, Lisbon's life is still more important than Red John. Even though sometimes I want to scream at him for letting Lisbon down, you can see the chemistry's there, already in season 1.
From 4:03 onwards, Jane has a sad look on his face. My best bet is because SAVING the peoples daughter, reminded him of his daughter and how he'll never see her again :(
This scene had many things: 1//Jane is on one soul crusade to find a mand man among all the world.. despite his intentions to get justice no matter the cost to bear .. 2//Lisbon had to be savior enough to see that jane deserves justice to achieve peace so that he could see a day without any more self remorse of a mistake he did from his past by pushing his family's life in harms way.. She knows he deserves to hunt red john down.. but in order to that he needs to have a cool mind and not a angered heart... She reminds him that there friends who care for him even though he doesnt see that happening... gosh i wish jane received peace over time he wished so much for...
when jane is looking at the newly reunited family, his eyes are full of longing and regret. its obvious he is imagining him and his family together hugging and being happy......oh i made myself cry! :'(

This scene is so emotional and beautiful without even saying much. Janes face when the girl runs to her parents. Walking off. Smelling the orange. I think hes thinking over what lisbon said, ans reaizing there are things he values even more thrn killing RJ. The music is perfect. Great direction and acting.
this scene reminds me when beckett on the show Castle shot and killed her only lead to her mothers murder to save castle's life back in season 1. And look who is on this show Jerry Tyson aka 3xk Castles biggest creal killer.

They don't usually write more than one season ahead, you never know if a show can be axed or how it's going to play out.
Everyone here missed that the writers themselves didn't think of all this back then. They painted themselves into a corner around s3 finale and only then came up with the Blake Assoc. So, no this guy didn't.

As much as I love this scene, it makes me so sad! I hate the things Jane says to Lisbon. Lisbon is so hurt when he says "Some things you just can't fix... It's the way of the world.." I can tell it breaks Lisbon's heart.
She saved him, just as he saved her. He was badly damaged and Lisbon gave him the reason to live. She gave up on love and a personal life because of her own traumas, but he gave her the reason to love.
Lisbon was just so sad about Jane's view of himself and the world. Just reminding you that this is a very broken, sad person. She had to keep reminding him his life was worth living, and that people would miss him if he were gone. I don't think it was until after this episode he started believing in that.
If you’ve the right Choke on the barrel... 100’ is still doable. Most likely a Police issued shotgun would have this attachment to prevent collateral damage. However, how did Jane get one? If not a Police issued, where? The officer was seen - in the scene - carrying the evidence gun away for processing moments before.
I miss the Mentalist and the days of not knowing who Red John was. Not that the reveal was disappointing but because “thrill is in the chase, never the capture”.
Jane feels very hopeless here. He thought there was no way he could ever come out of the darkness he was feeling: “Some things you just can’t fix. Maybe angry is the way of the world.” But Lisbon pulls him towards life and lightness. She holds him up and guides him away from his despair. Lisbon is religious and already experienced -- and emerged -- from loss (her father committed suicide). Her outlook on life is clear -- keep moving forward in spite of the setbacks and the pain. In Season 2, he tries to return the favor when he sees she is still sad about losing Bosco. He goes a step further by promising her he will always save her, reaffirming what he said in Season 1's trust fall. To me, the beauty of this ending is that it shows Lisbon's strength of character that Jane will eventually depend on to help him heal. I think he appreciated later what she said to him in this episode. As we see in the rest of the series, they pull each other up when the other is down. Jane becomes very protective of Lisbon. And Lisbon becomes more supportive of Jane, because she starts to see the goodness in him, hidden beneath all the arrogance. There is a spark between them for sure in Season 1, but I don't think either of them are in love yet here. The way he throws away the shotgun, surprised at himself, indicates that his reaction was subconscious. We can infer that whatever he felt subconsciously for Lisbon made him grab the shotgun. I don't think he knew why he did it. The script doesn't spell it out either; it's left ambiguous. But keep in mind that Maya was also in the range of the shotgun, and Hardy was in love with Maya. He very well could have killed her as his twisted way of not letting anyone else have her if he couldn't. If he killed Lisbon, Maya might have been next. There were two people at risk of dying here.

When the girl was reunited with her family, Jane looked so sad and i cant help feeling that he was thinking of his own daughter that he would never see again. I know he joined CBI for one purpose but he must find it so diffucult to deal with dead/missing people on a daily basis 😢
These dramatised comments are hilarious... everyone's talking about how beautiful these scenes were, but no one noticed that a cop was literally shot and everyone stood around the bad guy. No one cared that one of their colleagues and probably friends had just been killed. Lol

I watched then all growing up as a kid - the mentalist. NCIS, csi, csi ny, csi miami, Law and order SVU.. the mentalist was always my favourite

They don't usually write more than one season ahead, you never know if a show can be axed or how it's going to play out.
Everyone here missed that the writers themselves didn't think of all this back then. They painted themselves into a corner around s3 finale and only then came up with the Blake Assoc. So, no this guy didn't.
@@smurfyday definitely! and (spoilers) after timothy carter not being RJ, and given that the writers didn't even know who RJ was until a couple seasons in, and all the other plot holes of this otherwise amazing show makes it kinda infuriating.
This is the moment you know Jane cares more for Lisbon more than getting RJ.

As much as I love this scene, it makes me so sad! I hate the things Jane says to Lisbon. Lisbon is so hurt when he says "Some things you just can't fix... It's the way of the world.." I can tell it breaks Lisbon's heart.
She saved him, just as he saved her. He was badly damaged and Lisbon gave him the reason to live. She gave up on love and a personal life because of her own traumas, but he gave her the reason to love.
Lisbon was just so sad about Jane's view of himself and the world. Just reminding you that this is a very broken, sad person. She had to keep reminding him his life was worth living, and that people would miss him if he were gone. I don't think it was until after this episode he started believing in that.

An early sign of how much Jane cares for Lisbon-he'll resort to firing a gun at someone trying to kill her, even if it costs him a chance at Red John.
They found the perfect actor to play Hardy/Tanner, he was good on Castle too as 3XK

In real life.. shotguns have okay range.
If you’ve the right Choke on the barrel... 100’ is still doable. Most likely a Police issued shotgun would have this attachment to prevent collateral damage.
However, how did Jane get one? If not a Police issued, where? The officer was seen - in the scene - carrying the evidence gun away for processing moments before.

Not that the reveal was disappointing but because “thrill is in the chase, never the capture”.

Jane feels very hopeless here. He thought there was no way he could ever come out of the darkness he was feeling: “Some things you just can’t fix. Maybe angry is the way of the world.” But Lisbon pulls him towards life and lightness. She holds him up and guides him away from his despair. Lisbon is religious and already experienced -- and emerged -- from loss (her father committed suicide). Her outlook on life is clear -- keep moving forward in spite of the setbacks and the pain. In Season 2, he tries to return the favor when he sees she is still sad about losing Bosco. He goes a step further by promising her he will always save her, reaffirming what he said in Season 1's trust fall. To me, the beauty of this ending is that it shows Lisbon's strength of character that Jane will eventually depend on to help him heal. I think he appreciated later what she said to him in this episode. As we see in the rest of the series, they pull each other up when the other is down. Jane becomes very protective of Lisbon. And Lisbon becomes more supportive of Jane, because she starts to see the goodness in him, hidden beneath all the arrogance.
There is a spark between them for sure in Season 1, but I don't think either of them are in love yet here. The way he throws away the shotgun, surprised at himself, indicates that his reaction was subconscious. We can infer that whatever he felt subconsciously for Lisbon made him grab the shotgun. I don't think he knew why he did it. The script doesn't spell it out either; it's left ambiguous. But keep in mind that Maya was also in the range of the shotgun, and Hardy was in love with Maya. He very well could have killed her as his twisted way of not letting anyone else have her if he couldn't. If he killed Lisbon, Maya might have been next. There were two people at risk of dying here.

When the girl was reunited with her family, Jane looked so sad and i cant help feeling that he was thinking of his own daughter that he would never see again. I know he joined CBI for one purpose but he must find it so diffucult to deal with dead/missing people on a daily basis 😢
