I think the most interesting thing about this scene is that Patrick tries to take the moral high ground on Thomas, but when Thomas rebuffs him and confesses that he loved every moment of that revenge, it genuinely resonates with Patrick. The only mistake that Thomas makes is thinking that Patrick wouldn’t understand when-in reality-he was maybe the only one who really could.

Somebody young that makes no sense considering it takes a lot of time to build up the Blake association and gain so much wide spread power? The only one that would have made more sense was Stiles because he had that power BUT that would have been too obvious. Another option would have been a character that wasn't introduced before but then they'd have to drop the "handshake" thing. Mcallister was a solid choice. When Tommy corrects Jane and tells him that Captain Ahab’s ship is called The Pequod rather than The Peapod, Tommy’s eyes dart back and forth, he realizes his was getting too smart and blew his cover. At 1:49 Jane tells Tommy to lose the act and Tommy smirks, a nervous tick or a nod of recognition, him saying *damn Jane, you’re good.* but it doesn’t stop there. 1:57 he struggles with the dilemma of giving up or keeping the Tommy act going, in a desperate attempt at trying to get off, he asks, “that root beer coming?” The way he phrases this question shows he’s less confident and his voice shows some recoil. Not only is this wonderfully acted, it's also really cleverly written. There's not only a parallel between Tommy and Ahab but also between Tommy and Jane. I wonder if Tommy ever heard of what Jane ended up doing to RJ. I wish there had been a re-visitation of his character. He could have developed so interestingly, especially since The Mentalist is more about interesting main characters than it is about having really deep characters for the killers. It's a real pity that The Mentalist is finishing. I can't help but feel that as great as the show was, 7 seasons aren't enough to capture all the possibilities that could have been.

Ytalo Rafael 97 Couldn’t agree more. It’s like the writers just gave up. Red John is supposed to be an untouchable. Not who it turned out to be. Loved the show so much up to that point. If it wasn’t for Simon Baker’s perfect portrayal of Patrick Jane I would have never continued to watch.

I have been coming back to watch this video every few months for the last 8 years.
What really makes this scene so beautiful is not the casual switch of Tommy or how Jane reveals him. It's the last line - "You wouldn't understand". It's ironic, since we know that revenge has what driven Jane up until that point. Jane smiles, at this irony. But I think he also smiles because Tommy validates his path - the pleasure that he got from extracting his revenge reassures Jane that his own path of revenge is not futile; he will feel this joy too as he finally takes down Red John.

Thomy is never in control of the situation and seems lost, but just with these facial movement thomas appears way more confident and dangerous. + the really great work on the voice too

Yes and no some people with mental disabilities actually are able to hone in and direct a lot of their thinking and understanding to certain things, usually very specific things. Some people are say, able to remember every single Yankees game ever played and every member on the team at any time but ask them what they had for dinner yesterday and they may have no clue. Some may be able to play video games as if they were gods of them but ask them to find something on a computer and they never would or could take hours, it all varies. I believe the ability, or disorder, is called savant syndrome (could be very wrong but I do believe it’s at least similar to that) so him focusing and memorizing moby dick may be on the smaller scale from what I described but it’s not entirely unlikely for him to easily remember it in fact I’d say it’s extremely plausible. Just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in.
