a•muse Hypnosis in/of itself is nothing more than mental/physical relaxation. Hypnotic phenomenon is when you become so mentally/physically relaxed that you act as you would under, say, the influence of alcohol. Thus, while you can enter an altered state under hypnosis, it’s honestly no different than a state you could self-induce. Comedy stage hypnotists have actually grown in popularity and are much more common than ever before. They enable students to de-stress, alleviate anxiety and actually improve their mental/physical states while allowing them to have fun without worry. Many, including myself, have helped countless people understand the psychological truth (not the Hollywood BS) behind Hypnosis. I’ve managed to hypnotize at least one skeptic every show without a single negative review from said volunteers or surrounding guests/staff on my tour. I strongly advise everyone do their own research to ensure a hypnotist they may see is one they can trust. However, I am not a fan of people misinforming others’ about the dangers of hypnosis. Hypnosis is natural & based on my experience as a touring professional who’s guest taught college psychology, most who are scared of it don’t truly understand it (because most hypnotists don’t thoroughly explain it). Yes, there are immoral/unethical hypnotists out there but to say all hypnotists are bad is like saying all of a single gender is bad due to one bad relationship (which is illogical). Hypnosis is an experience to witness 1st hand without the clouding judgement of others (many of whom misunderstand it without their own experience). If you’re curious and want to have fun, volunteer with a hypnotist you trust, otherwise simply interview the volunteers post-show 🙂
