  • An illustrated podcast detailing the life and archival evidence surrounding Elizabeth Greville (1720-1800), née Hamilton, 1st Countess Brooke and Warwick. Born into the famous Scottish aristocratic Hamilton family, Elizabeth's upbringing was undoubtedly spent amongst Royalty, due to her mother's influence in the household of Frederick, Prince of Wales. In 1742 she married Francis Greville, later 1st Earl Brooke and 1st Earl of Warwick, to whom she bore many sons and daughters who were involved in the spheres of arts. During the late 1750s and 60s Elizabeth embarked on a love affair with Robert Clerk, which archival evidence shows produced a love child and a painful public separation from her husband the Earl. Clerk and the Countess eventually built a neoclassical mansion in Marylebone designed by James and Robert Adam.
The podcast is presented by Dr Adam Busiakiewicz, a historian of Warwick Castle and its Earls.

A wonderful, professionally made podcast. An interesting story of several generations of outstanding women Jane Hamilton and her daughter Elizabeth.Elizabeth is a beautiful, strong woman. She married Francis Greville. Children were born in the marriage, who received an excellent education. It was especially interesting to learn about the talents of the daughters. Elizabeth had a passionate affair with a Clerk, and her relationship with her husband developed dramatically. Elizabeth fought for her feelings regardless of the opinion of society and was able to defend them. She never forgave her husband. A beautiful, extraordinary woman has lived a decent life. The author of the podcast has great respect and sympathy, first of all, for the women of Warwick.I listened to this story with great pleasure. Thank you.

Be very careful not to continually use the word ‘phenomenal’. You may not be aware of how often you are using it. The presentation itself is most interesting. ❤

Fascinating and well done. The shame is that women like Elizabeth Greville were held to much higher standards when it came to affairs and sexuality than their husbands. The classic case being that of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. Her husband was just as much of a philanderer as she was, yet she is the one, along with her sister, Harriette, Countess of Bessborough, who had to go into exile and leave behind their children.
