A Georgian Countess and her Daughters
An illustrated podcast detailing the life and archival evidence surrounding Elizabeth Greville (1720-1800), née Hamilton, 1st Countess Brooke and Warwick. Born into the famous Scottish aristocratic Hamilton family, Elizabeth's upbringing was undoubtedly spent amongst Royalty, due to her mother's influence in the household of Frederick, Prince of Wales. In 1742 she married Francis Greville, later 1st Earl Brooke and 1st Earl of Warwick, to whom she bore many sons and daughters who were involved in the spheres of arts. During the late 1750s and 60s Elizabeth embarked on a love affair with Robert Clerk, which archival evidence shows produced a love child and a painful public separation from her husband the Earl. Clerk and the Countess eventually built a neoclassical mansion in Marylebone designed by James and Robert Adam.
The podcast is presented by Dr Adam Busiakiewicz, a historian of Warwick Castle and its Earls.

A wonderful, professionally made podcast. An interesting story of several generations of outstanding women Jane Hamilton and her daughter Elizabeth.Elizabeth is a beautiful, strong woman. She married Francis Greville. Children were born in the marriage, who received an excellent education. It was especially interesting to learn about the talents of the daughters. Elizabeth had a passionate affair with a Clerk, and her relationship with her husband developed dramatically. Elizabeth fought for her feelings regardless of the opinion of society and was able to defend them. She never forgave her husband. A beautiful, extraordinary woman has lived a decent life. The author of the podcast has great respect and sympathy, first of all, for the women of Warwick.I listened to this story with great pleasure. Thank you.

Fascinating and well done. The shame is that women like Elizabeth Greville were held to much higher standards when it came to affairs and sexuality than their husbands. The classic case being that of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. Her husband was just as much of a philanderer as she was, yet she is the one, along with her sister, Harriette, Countess of Bessborough, who had to go into exile and leave behind their children.

It was delightful to hear about Henry Richard Greville (1779-1853) Lord Brooke - and later 3rd Earl of Warwick and his Grand Tour's adventures. I was wondering whether the young Lord has left any account of how much money he carried and how was the exchange of currencies made in each country he visited. The Lord lived and witnessed on his travels the history that we study as historical events which has happened so long ago far removed from our own present. I found the Lord quite accomplished as a watercolorist. His work must be preserved as a historical document and illustration of the time and places of his travels. When I was studying for a master's degree in art history, I remember looking at a portfolio "Specimens of Polyautography" published in 1803 and observing his atmospheric print "Landscape with Old Trees by Water" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. One can almost feel the wind thrusting, breaking the branches, blowing the leaves into the air, as if we had just witness the fury of the storm and the damaged old trees. Once again we see the Lord at his best, not just as a scriber, but in this case portraying his own experience. His diaries and art works must be seen as an important contribution to the British and European's histories. What great adventure was the Grand Tour specially for a British aristocrat. Thank you David.

The recounting of the journey you have introduced to us through his memoir, generates an exclusive and rewarding perspective into such a unique slice of life and time. This wonderful demonstration literally paints for us a series of pictures depicting the phenomenon of the early nineteenth centry grand tour.

Fascinating, and well done. But such mini-documentaries ought to come with a health warning. Pace: While this generation of inherited English wealth were indulging in fun, the MASSES were enduring dire poverty and distress. It's to her credit that she embraced Socialism, but even that, I'd guess, was a kind of pose. Trendy at that time. Ironic that she should have paraded about as that guillotined French queen. Such characters were lucky to have avoided the fate of the Romanov dynasty. Basically, they were in the right place at the right time. Daresay she was a nice woman. But one who had no qualms about opening her legs for a Prince of Wales. Such was their morality - or, rather, lack of it.

Richard II s mental health issues must have helped bring on theWar of the Roses, encouraging power hungry and already powerful dukes like Lancaster, Henry Bolingbroke who became Henry IV ... they were honing in on the opportunity. many weak kings in this dynasty like King John, Henry III, Edward II, Richard II, Henry VI...one after the other, and quite recently, in the previous dynasty, William the Conqueror s sons William II and Henry I , and cousin Stephen were considered very poor kings as well... with all the powerful wealthy dukes and other nobles of strong character hanging around in the wings through all these reigns, it is no wonder there was constant fighting as many nobles probably thought that they could do better ... it is no wonder that when the Tudor dynasty took power, Henry VII was considered a bit paranoid and prone to removing or cutting the power of nobility and other royalty... and he was followed by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, who also seemed to understand maintaining control
