To make a blanket you would have to make the width you want and count the squares then do some maths to get the number of squares that will work with your tension. Then some more maths to figure how much yarn works for you. Everyone has different tension and different brands of yarn work up differently so there is no set rule of thumb for how many makes a blanket.
