Yes, NZ SAS were established in 1955 during the Malayan emergency. The British government asked New Zealand to establish an SAS squadron to work along side the British SAS Regiment in Malaya. Apart from the officers and NCOs, the first troops that made up the New Zealands SAS squadron were drawn from civilian street. A call went out and over 1000 men volunteered, this was whittled down to a squadron size unit. It wasn't a fluke that the British had asked New Zealand for this unit as when the British first created the SAS in the deserts of North Africa during WWII, another similar type of unit was running around the desert causing havoc amongst the Germans and Italians with deep raids into their territories. This was the Long Range Desert Group or the LRDG. The first troops were drawn from the New Zealand Division and later the British army. In fact, the SAS went along with the LRDG on raids to learn their tactics and techniques so, the New Zealand army has had brother relationship with the British SAS since its inception

They seem to wear different gear as well, the main thing that shocked me was the fact that in NZ there's a direct entry recruitment scheme for the NZSAS and you don't even need to have had years of rifleman experience. I know for a fact in the Australian army you need to have years of Rifleman experience before they can even start to consider you for the SASR, from memory the same goes for the British SAS.

Their explanation is exactly what I have in mind should they ask me the 'Why' question.
Want to serve, want to learn skills and develop excellence (especially mentally), want to test myself to see what is in there, and then give back to the community with the skills I would have learned. Ya know, maybe as Personal Trainer one day or Fitness Coach to youth. I know it's not a given, and people tell me it'll be the toughest nut to crack - but it's not their dream, it's mine. And I do not want to look back, 20-30 years from now, regretting not to have at least given it my all. "Who Dares Wins".
To all those who also plan to join, I wish you all the best. Dig deep within yourself to find that endurance!
And to those already serving or have served and are now retired, my deepest respect. SAS has probably inspired me more than anything so far!

Marc, this is John Rodriguez: Affirmative and Amen, Roger That. I Am a Former Force Recon Marine from 02 July 1987 to 01 July 1991, and when I crossdecked on over to The US Army, serving from 08 January 1993 to 17 December 1998, I served in the 75 the Ranger Regiment, as well as as in Units of the Regular Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard,so I Am easily offended when pseudo- Soldier Stolen Valor types and Anti-Military Civilians question My Patriotism and U S Armed Forces Service ,when, they neither know Me nor know of Me!! Semper Fi and Sua Sponte Rangers Lead The Way 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇵🇷🇳🇴💪 🤘💀
