@@ayfr1249 We were never given "tech" in sniper school. No damn wind readers and no laser range finders. Whatever operates on a battery will ultimately fail you at the moment you need it.

I give these guys and are past service men & women so much props! I could never handle such situation or have the patients for it. The first time I experience a sniper battle is playing the video game "Metal Gear Solid 3" back in 2004. There is a boss battle with The End who is a grandmaster sniper in the game. The terrain is huge and he camouflaged so well. When I first fought him, I had a lot of help thanks to Kojima making it easier for players who don't have the patients to deal with him. The 3rd time I fought him, I decided to fight like a real sniper battle and oh man, was it really darn hard to find him. Without using the konami code, killing or capturing his parrot, the directional microphone, and thermal goggles, it would literally take hours or days to kill him as you rely on his footsteps and lens flare to give away his position. For everyone that made it to sniping class and graduation, thank you very much!
Some of these scenes show a device attached to their rifles above their scopes. That is an AN/PSQ-23 laser rangefinger, made by L3/Insight Technologies. This has a rangefinder with a range of 6 kilometers (way beyond effective range of sniper rifles) and includes a digital magnetic compass which also shows elevation in addition to azimuth. It is MILES system compatible and can be interlinked with other equipment to share targeting information. A neat piece of gear, and only costs roughly 15,000 dollars apiece.
OldSlowGamer It'd be scary to know that a piece of equipment, that could come back to target Americans, was left behind in Afghanistan.. I'd like to hope whatever was issued, signed for and carried by the teams, came back with them.

if it was not for Carlos Hathcock ,then most of the sniper schools would not have any basic sniper platforms to work with full stop, so thank Carlos Hathcock for everything he did at marine scout sniper school at Quantico Virginia and Camp Pendleton.
I went through a similar course in Security Forces training. I grew up on a farm shooting and training in marksmanship since I was 6 years old, and I'm still a dead shot. When I came into the military, I scored so well on the range that got expert marksman with multiple weapons. Not just marksman, but Expert marksman. My brothers all had similar training at home, and the Marine Corps recognized just how good of a shot that my oldest brother was. They offered him a 6 year job, to be a Marine Corps Sniper Trainer at Quantico for his entire 6 years. He never stepped foot in Vietnam. But every sniper he trained went to Vietnam, and a few to Cambodia. My next older brother was also a dead shot, and he went into the Army. Instead of taking advantage of his skills they made him an MP, and he hated it. He finished his contract and got his Honorable, and got out and never looked back at law enforcement like my oldest brother and I did. These special forces guys and snipers are the top of the line dead shots, and there's almost nobody on earth who can do what they do. Kudos to them.

Well, yes, but sniper training has been around for quite some time. There was limited training in WWII, and the Korean war, but official training began in the Vietnam Era for U.S. soldiers. The school as we know it now, opened in the 80s, but soldiers have been receiving sniper training for a lot longer than people realize. Of course, before the 2nd World War, there wasn't thought to be a need for snipers, nor was there really the weaponry for it. We had specialized snipers who took out Germans, and they did pave the way for all others. Their skills aided those in Korea, then we learned from them, and so on. Weapons changed and improved, and a more formal training was undertaken in 1968. We don't forget the pioneers who started it, because we have to start somewhere, right? England, Canada, and Australia have some pretty bad@ss snipers who have aided us in wars, too, but I don't know the history of their sniper schools. I just know that I am grateful they're on our side.
As a sniper, it's not easy. The distance, wind, gravity, to the weight of the weapon and ammunition that hold the weapon. If you think it's more about shooting a sniper weapon, than you failed the mission. Remember the sniper is the eyes of field commander.
I went through ranger school and sniper school at ft. Benning back in 95. It was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life but I wouldn't trade it for nothing.

My uncle was in the SAS during the siege of the Iranian embassy but I ended up as an Arctic Ranger in the Swedish army. We had one medic, one sniper, one radio operator and me as a sergeant. Dalton Campbell Do your research well. Ask a lot of questions, try to find veterans to talk to and be committed to your decision. I'd like to guess that Snipers have to have a mental toughness. to do what they do and to keep their minds uncluttered to the fact that they are hvts to the enemy.
I definitely understand these snipers are taking shots much farther away, but snipers in WW2 did not have a second soldier scoping out for them and giving distance. This is definitely still quite challenging.
Difference between peace and war time, war time like WW made every nation desperate, can't afford to put one as a spotter since the area was too large to cover and way too many died.
These new optics are amazing. Night vision, built in range finder, Thermo, lazors you can only see with night vision on ect...I saw a vid of a crossbow scope that has built in rangefinder and adjusted itself at any distance...hits every time with min if any adjustments
I mean these are just normal soldiers that were reccomended into a 3 week training program. Yea its a hard course but they're all young kids. Definitely not well trained soldiers.
In my opinion, I think they should beef up the amount of snipers in all branches. Snipers are definitely a force multiplier and just the idea of stopping the enemy in their tracks, allowing friendlies to maneuver and close with the enemy, at the time of their choosing, dictating the tempo of the battle.
@@marshallsetser6831 maybe but shooting is like 10% of what this video covers. Seeing a bunch of kids with expensive guns walk around like a pack of apes isn't as scary as the thought of a highly trained invisible sniper that is anywhere and nowhere at the same time and does not miss shots.
I went through sniper training in Vietnam with the Ft. Benning marksmanship team. We only learned marksmanship. About a third of the men didn't make it all the way through. I finished, and was ultimately credited with 39 kills.

Most of the class just stood up and started walking. We were drenched to the bone and our uniforms froze solid. Kudos to those that passed.

My how things have changed over the years... My sniper school was almost 35 years ago. Much of what we as a part of being in the Long Range Recon battalion is now being taught here to these new sniper candidates and I for one TOTALLY APPROVE OF! This is what being a sniper is all about, not the actual shot - any decent expert can do that part of it - it's getting there AND back again with both the kill and the detailed info of where they were are FAR MORE IMPORTANT!
Jeez that's relevant.
I got mine on sale with my X-Box

I went through sniper training in Vietnam with the Ft. Benning marksmanship team. We only learned marksmanship. About a third of the men didn't make it all the way through. I finished, and was ultimately credited with 39 kills.
What awards did you get?
Just a genuine question, do some of the lives you ended ever trickle back into your mind? I know in that moment you were certain it was necessary, but in a way did you feel like you were ending more than just a target?
