You should check out the town of Sonoma in Sonoma County. "Most haunted town in California" according to resident historian and paranormal researcher Carla Heine, who has lived there all her life, growing up in the haunted old Ray Adobe, a historical monument that housed Abraham Lincoln's New York Rangers troops who went on to carry out the horrific Lovall Valley Massacre of Indians, which only came to light recently. As Carla calls it, "a Civil War secret". Carla became a friend of mine and I'm now writing an historical fantasy about Sonoma. She does ghost and historical tours in the area and has published a book "Sonoma's Ghosts". Her website features one of the strange paranormal photographs I took at the site of the Whipping Tree, where Indians used to be hanged from a humongous limb of a huge old oak tree near the center of town. There was a movie called "Haunted Sonoma County" Carla was in and I went to see the premiere at the retro haunted Sebastiani Hotel in the middle of town.. the producer Tom Wyrsh gave a talk as did the manager of the theatre. I bought his DVD also one for "Haunted Wine Country". They may still be available. I don't know. Carla was in both of them. If you're a California buff, he also made DVD's of Playland at the Beach (San Francisco.. I grew up going there), Sutro Baths (I also enjoyed as a kid), Creature Features ( a favorite Boomer cult pleasure), and one about Harry Houdini, whose spirit a group of aficionados tried to contact in seances every year at the iconic Phoenix Nightclub in Petaluma. I hope this gives you a few interesting historical and paranormal bits to go on.
I’m going to agree with another comment on here that San Jose California is the most horrible haunted place in California very scary very creepy ghosts and shadow figures everywhere. Even in brand new development.
I was in Preston CYA in 92-94 very creepy place and very cruel place to be as a young man. I experienced many ghosts and heard many voices echo laughing or crying at times.
I was wondering about that. Almost EVERY SINGLE TIME you hear about a place meant to reform troubled boys, girls, or kids in general, you eventually hear tales of cruelty & HORRIFIC abuse. So, when I heard him discussing Preston's time as 1, I couldn't help but think hmmm & how many tales of cruelty & abuse have come about that place. Or how long until they do. Which is frustrating for me bc I have a very troubled 13yo son, who is raising 9 kinds of hell around here & nothing my husband or I do seems to make a difference at all! &We have 2 younger kids 8y & 6yo that we're trying to protect & keep away from that kinda trouble. So we've discussed if maybe a military school or school for troubled kids would be a good idea but I can't get passed worry that there are predators lurking for easy prey in those places too like always! Even if not from the adults there, then there would be other VERY troubled kids there, so would it really actually help or just give him real trauma to deal with! 🤦 Sorry for unloading all that on you. Just a bad stressful day & I'm trying to distract myself & instead end up venting in the comment to an unsuspecting stranger. 🤦 Sincere Apologies!
We moved to an area near Ione (locals say "eye-own") and we visited Preston Castle during a fund raiser/odd festival where several booths were set up and people sold creepy and fantastical things. We paid to take a self-guided tour which was very interesting. They have a list of each person who died there. We did get spooked a little by some word noises but then we realized the noise was made by the many bats who live in the building.
The Preston School of Industry, affectionately known as PSI to its inmates, seems to have its own atmosphere. Even standing outside, it gives you a chill. One of its most famous alumni was country singer Merle Haggard.
In Disneyland, on the haunted mansion ride, the witch in the glass that is speaking is reciting a real seance. It’s not a surprise that it is actually haunted.

I havnt personally experienced anything, but I’ve seen utube videos where security cameras have captured white shadow figures (in that area) after hours when nobody is in the park.
