I just bought a 2018 ram 2500 Cummins and use it as a daily driver. I came from a 2013 Chevy gasser. The ride is much smoother, the mpg is 19. No mods. Everything stock.
I just bought a new 2018 ram tradesman crew cab 2500 Cummins 4x2. This is my first diesel and I am hooked. I get 17-18mpg city and 24-26mpg highway at 70mph. I’ll never go back.
I also have a Ram but a 2014 CD Crew 4x4 Auto, and use mine as a daily for last 3.5 years, I have 44k miles it's been good no issues except front ball joints need replacing soon, I'm in mountainous area 6500 ft elevation in northern New Mexico, highway cruises smooth from 15-19mpg, city is about 14mpg in winter, Took trip to Rocky Mtn loop from Denver,Estes Park, Grand Lake,Winter Park back to Denver I amazingly got 26mpg's!!! Been a great truck this far ! Thanks for review n post.
Paul Montano ball joints. ... my f450 has 900 pond it & all is good because it was not made with mommies in mind. The new style of ram has the worst visibility of any dodge I had seen. Sad
Hey thanks. I am looking at a 2017 model. I love in North Georgia but have a place I drive to in Driggs Idaho. Had a Tahoe I had put 427k miles on si I am looking at these. Cold weather is a corn for me
Try the stealth module if you are unable to delete. I went this route to have much less of a chance of losing my warranty where it’s removable and doesn’t leave a foot print on the ecu. It doesn’t turn it into an animal but I’m very happy with the bump in power between 1500-2000rpm and also I’m averaging 21mpg consistently with a lot of start and stop and idling time, and that’s hand calculated btw.
Thanks for the info.. I'm also in Idaho, Meridian area. I'm looking at getting another truck in the next 4 months. It's gonna be a diesel just not totally sure on the make yet.
Duramax's are good motors, but a real nightmare to work on. If there is a chance you'll be the one working on it, stick with a cummins, by far the easiest to work on. GM interiors aren't up to par with ram either, IMO.
I’m assuming other states have other laws, but Missouri 3/4 and 1 ton truck don’t have to pass emissions? So in Missouri most diesels are straight piped.
Jeff, thanks for making this video. I'm thinking about buying a used 2015 Ram 2500 ST from a fleet of utility trucks. The one I'm looking at comes with a lift gate and rear window guard. Both look extremely heavy duty. Unfortunately that's all the information available. The milage isn't even listed. Knowing what you know about the 2015 2500, what tips can you give me on things to inspect while considering buying the truck? I'm most interested in understanding the biggest known problems to look for while inspecting the truck.
I just went to that cafe rio that you passed yesterday haha. Thanks! Have any issues with the emissions stuff? How many times has it gone into regen mode? Has it ever went into limp mode? What about reliability long term?
Hey Jeff, really enjoyed this video. I also live where deletes are not legal so your observations about your truck and the options you’ve chosen are very helpful to me. I also will run 295/70 R18 tires, was just wondering what tire pressures you are running to achieve the mpg figures you mentioned in the video. I live in southern CA but ordered my new truck from Dennis Dillon Ram in Caldwell. Hopefully will be coming up there to take delivery in the next couple of weeks. Never been to Idaho and very much looking forward to it. Love road trips, and with a new truck, can’t hardly wait. Thanks for your time, Alan
Jeff Borron Thanks, that,s what I was hoping to hear. Running 80 psi would be excruciating when not towing. Thanks again, really appreciate the info. Did you purchase your truck from Dennis Dillon as I did?
Hey Jeff, TFL Truck did a 43mi run to check the avg mpg's on your same truck going a steady speed of 65. The result was 24.7 mpg. Did you ever get close to that prior to modifying?
+Rick Walker yeah that was a two-wheel drive I believe that they tested. I know that they added a little bit of weight in the bed to try to make it as accurate as possible. I saw right around 22 MPG hand calculated on a regular basis when I would take longer road trips. They MPG that I talked about is really only going from Meridian to work which is in Boise.
I'm buying the same truck used right now, probably just gonna carry a container of DEF under the seat or in the toolbox I have because knowing me I am forgetful. Also, I run a business right and if I register commercial under my business I can delete it. Is it worth it to avoid having to clean the EGR, DPF etc.? Have you had to clean those yet?
Hey thinking about purchasing a 2500 Cummins Currently haul building supplies drywall beams and appliances etc almost weekly but also like to take my truck up north to ride trails on my dirt bike and stuff hunting hauling the fishing boat etc currently own a 1500 5.7 would I notice an improvement or should I stay with a 1500 the heaviest thing I haul is a John Deere 2010 and that's once a year typically great vid loved the beginning!!!
Hi I just subbed... Are you going to start making more videos..? Get a grease needle and grease your zerkless u joints etc every oil change... I have 2006 2500 and always get offers to buy my truck every time I go to dealer.. BTW dealers suck for anything but warrantee.. Love your truck
Thanks Stephen, I sold my Ram for a multitude of reasons. I've given Ram by business 3 times now(2012,2014,2015) and I wouldn't own another unfortunately. Your 2006 is a classic don't ever get rid of that truck. Read my "about" section for more info. Thanks again👍
Garage clearance is something I'm worried about. When I pull into my garage at work there is a height bumper that says 6'2. Do you know what the original height was before mods? Also your 7 ft clearance you mentioned... Was that even though some garages said less?
20 MPG with that thing? That's impressive--my parents just got a 2015 Cherokee, and it only gets 21-22 MPG, and that's without the 6.7 L diesel or the off-road capability of a truck... damn.
I have added a leveling kit to all of my 1/2 ton trucks so far but not my old 3/4 ton. Are leveling coils normal for 3/4 tons? My 1/2 ton levels were pretty much 2" spacers.
+Chad Smith You'll be just fine with a 2" spacer with shock extensions if you just want to achieve a certain appearance or just want to run larger tires. I would recommend going with Thuren or Carli if you want that 1/2 ton ride in a 3/4 ton truck.
I've watched a lot of these type of videos, looking at getting a 14 and up ram cummins in April. First one I've seen from idaho, and area I actually know. Do you have leaf springs or coil springs in the back?
+Filipica The third 2017 SR5 Crewmax 4x4. Got tired of all the recalls on the Ram. It was my 3rd Ram and all three had issues. Nothing to leave you stranded but definitely expected better quality and reliability out of a 60k truck. I also don't tow near as much so I went back to a Tundra. Yes it's a older platform but it's been proven. All in all if I were to get another diesel or need one I would look really hard at the Duramax. Take care
Matt Kortez I get mine done at a local lube shop that I trust and it's $80 out the door with rotella-T full synthetic but that's here in Texas dealer wants $120
james taylor that's unbelievable cheap! Here up in canada your looking at $300 at the dealership or at a lube shop. And thats not even including a fuel filter....
The egr system on these new trucks is hardly noticeable. The only way to get serious mpg gains is to remove the dpf filter. Most states will not let you do that whatsoever.
And the fact that a diesel can get big power WITH the DPF in place. Shows that people that remove them do NOT understand diesels. Just add more oxygen by putting a Banks intake, and a Flowmaster Pro muffler on. The Emission will stay legal. The warranty will be good. The air will be clean. Less foot will be required to go the same speed. The fuel will stay in the tank for more miles.
There is a product Called "Hot Shots Secret." If the DPF gets clogged. For $15 at Auto Zone, you get a half gallon. And less than $40 at the truck stop. The DPF can be cleaned while you drive. Of course, water injection kits. Keeps the system, DPF, AND EGR clean too. Water injection from Snow Performance is CARB approved. So that is a power upgrade and a way to keep things clean. So the thousands of dollars cost for the dealer to replace the DPF, is only for those who like shinny new parts.
How frequent is regeneration? I currently have a 2015 f250 and it runs the exhaust clean about once a fuel tank. Mostly my mileage is good but regen ruins it back down to 15 or so. Ram has good deals now so debating the swap to cummins.
In Canada we run Number 1 diesel in winter and Number 2 diesel in summer. The winter mix has kerosene and some additives in it. Diesel will gel when it gets cold clogging filters and injectors. This is a necessity for my climate.
If your driving a diesel daily atleast keep up with the maintenance and use it for what its supposed to be used for. Not using it to haul your dinky lil dirt bike and roll coal to look cool.
Terrible front end visibility from the stupid bulge hood & huge pillars. This is not a good truck for daily use. I noticed a 2004 f450 crew 4x4 flatbed xl rides better & steers better due to having locking hubs. Before I buy new, I will spend 15k on a bulletproof 6.0 rather than buying something of less value. This ram is not for work ... it is a truck for commuters that want to look macho.worst dodge ever .... could not love a new one at a giveaway price. The new ford's and chevy are crap too.

Was thinking about getting a big deisel for a while think I will now thanks for the video
Hey man, thanks for the heads up. Great info. I’ve been looking getting one. I’ll have to do more research before buying.
Same ...especially for towing a 5th wheel.

Well done. About crapped when I saw the HD Motorcycle shop approaching. I live in Boise.
+Rick Walker Thanks Rick!
These trucks are amazing. The sound is unmistakable👍
great daily review
Thanks for the info.. I'm also in Idaho, Meridian area. I'm looking at getting another truck in the next 4 months. It's gonna be a diesel just not totally sure on the make yet.
oldsoul rider I would look really hard at the Duramax personally

Good video, I really want a ram 2500.
DEF in my 2015 2500 is about 50 gal Diesel to 1 gal def
I have the 2014 version of this truck and I have to say the Cummins makes Mountain driving so much easier.
O I'm looking into going with double R Diesel and the ERG delete tune.
+ATC235 Wish I could but I can't due to emissions testing here. My 2012 was fully deleted(In AZ) and I loved it 👍
The MM3 from Double R Diesel, seems to be the BEST way to go, I will be doing full Deletes this summer. MM3 , a one unit does it all tuner.
Jeff Borron Ray at double R diesel has emissions tubing available.
Jeff Borron tuning" 🤣
Thanks Jeff..

Hey Alan thanks for watching. I usually ran 50psi unless I'm towing then I'll bump it back up to spec.
Jeff Borron Thanks, that,s what I was hoping to hear. Running 80 psi would be excruciating when not towing. Thanks again, really appreciate the info. Did you purchase your truck from Dennis Dillon as I did?

How do you pass inspection with 5 percent tint?
I am seriously looking at this truck. How is it acceleration wise? Not flooring it, just comfortably taking off from a green light? Thanks
It's wonderful lol. Seriously feels more effortless to take off than it does in a car. I love it.
Mpg dead on! With factory and 34" aka 295 tires.. i have cooper maxx at. Get 14.1 winter 17.6-9 summer
Garage clearance is something I'm worried about. When I pull into my garage at work there is a height bumper that says 6'2. Do you know what the original height was before mods? Also your 7 ft clearance you mentioned... Was that even though some garages said less?

+Chad Smith You can get by with a 2" spacer no problem. But going with new coils and shocks upfront make it ride a lot better.
+Chad Smith You'll be just fine with a 2" spacer with shock extensions if you just want to achieve a certain appearance or just want to run larger tires. I would recommend going with Thuren or Carli if you want that 1/2 ton ride in a 3/4 ton truck.
How often do you change the oil? I just bought a used one with 30k miles on it. Same year and color as urs. Thanks for the video
+ATC235 The owners manual says every 15k miles but I still stick to the 5-7k mile intervals just to be safe. Thanks for the comment 👍👍
You are wasting your money changing your oil and oil filter
8-5K miles before Chrysler engineering maintenance manual suggest too.
It's 15k OR every 6 months whichever comes first. I put about 6 to 7k miles on a year so sometimes the oil doesn't even have 3000 miles on it.
I've watched a lot of these type of videos, looking at getting a 14 and up ram cummins in April. First one I've seen from idaho, and area I actually know.
Do you have leaf springs or coil springs in the back?
+Curtis Bull coils.. it's a 2500HD
Jeff Borron
What's your thought on them over the leaf spring set up, do they really ride better?
+Curtis Bull In my opinion no they don't. The 2500 is still very stiff in the rear.
Hey Jeff, what kind of Toyota Tundra did you get? And what was wrong with ur dodge 2500, cause I was planning on getting one...?
+Filipica The third 2017 SR5 Crewmax 4x4. Got tired of all the recalls on the Ram. It was my 3rd Ram and all three had issues. Do a walk around
How much does an oil change cost you at the dealer?
Matt Kortez I get mine done at a local lube shop that I trust and it's $80 out the door with rotella-T full synthetic but that's here in Texas dealer wants $120
james taylor that's unbelievable cheap! Here up in canada your looking at $300 at the dealership or at a lube shop. And thats not even including a fuel filter....
where can I purchase spring coils to make my truck softer I got the same truck
+Alex aj look up Thuren. Their great 👍
Tuff Truck HD coils
Did the bigger tires mess up the speedometer? can it be flashed in the computer to adjust for tire size
+Fink I didn't notice a difference... I wouldn't be worried about it unless you went larger than 35's.
The Lower the speed doesn't show, Over 50mph or so it's starts making a difference like 5mph over the gauge, I went from 245-17 to 285-17,
That was a long ass stop light
My gf said we sound the same. I showex about 10 other people they lsughed so hard saying omg thsts you bro
i got 12000 miles on mine and have only used 6 gallons of def
bleachinuri that's great!
get a egr delete kit to get good mpg
The egr system on these new trucks is hardly noticeable. The only way to get serious mpg gains is to remove the dpf filter. Most states will not let you do that whatsoever.
especially where hes at they have smog check and the dealers wont take his tradein if its been tampered and warranty bye bye
as for the difference yes it made alot im getting 20 minamal 17 towing skidsteer in my opinion i like it
And the fact that a diesel can get big power WITH the DPF in place. Shows that people that remove them do NOT understand diesels. How is the cabin noise with a diesel?
You'll be impressed. It does not sound like a diesel in the cab while driving. The ole school bus sound is gone.
You know your in a diesel but... with the radio turned up you won't hear a thing 👍
I have a straight piped LBZ and it’s surprisingly quite, until you give her the beans then she screams!
what's transmission do you have on your 2500?
k Le 68RFE
Jeff Borron how has it lasted? And how much would you say you tow?
How frequent is regeneration? I currently have a 2015 f250 and it runs the exhaust clean about once a fuel tank. Mostly my mileage is good but regen ruins it back down to 15 or so. Ram has good deals now so debating the swap to cummins.
bub459 I could never really tell when it was going through a Regen. Also with 35's I never saw below 16mpg.
Why don’t you post anymore
How do you get to the forum ?
What years are you running?
Do you still have her?
I'd like a 3500
OMG BOISE!!!!!!!! ha
Ha I saw the meridian Kuna exit and said the same thing!
What part of Idaho?
+Jeffrey Zimmerman Meridian
Hell yea I was born in coeur d'alene and lived in Genesee most of my life! Now im stuck in Houston....
Ha I'm in Houston. The roads suck.
We had a van that was a ram 2500
Ten mile rd!
2016 costs 700 for oil change at the dealer.
Damalia Marsi really? Why not do it yourself?
So wait. You’re paranoid about changing your own oil in fear of a potential warrantee claim. Yet you buy your fuel filters on eBay. Makes sense.
Winter fuel ?
In Canada we run Number 1 diesel in winter and Number 2 diesel in summer. The winter mix has kerosene and some additives in it. Diesel will gel when it gets cold clogging filters and injectors. This is a necessity for my climate.

God I hate fake gatekeepers...
just delete it -.- (after warranty that is ;)
