Today we're checking out the Fluence pickups from Fishman - the Modern Humbucker, the Devin Townsend set and the Tosin Abasi set. We compare them vs a set of EMG pickups, and against each other. Very big sounding and quite versatile pickups for sure.

I went with the tosin signature ones and man you weren’t lying the clarity and punchiness of these is great while not muddying up at all
Rad video, thanks! I'm having a hard time choosing pickups for a custom build and this video helped me feel more confident in narrowing down my decision.
It’s fascinating to hear the different pickups, voicing and modes. I was looking into getting a set of Fluences before. Definitely on the next set of pickups list.
Really enjoyed this video. Good stuff! :)
Thanks for this. I just preordered an 8 string with MH8's in it and wasn't sure what to expect so this def gives a little perspective. Would love to see extended range demos in the future!
Nice video. Both the EMG and Fishman are quality pickups. I feel the choice will depend on what style of music the players is into and what we want to achieve.
I got a set of the Devins for my Kiesel, and I'm loving them. Funny thing was listening to the Tosins at first and wondering if I chose wrong and then getting to the back to back comparison and still preferring the Devins. The clarity is great on the Tosins, but the Devins still have that with more thickness imo. They also sound incredible for leads because of that
I installed the Tosin's on my main six string in December. Zero regrets. So much versatility and piles of dynamics.
Also, those EMG's sound like a hot mess compared to any of the Fishmans. I remember when all of us metal heads thought that was the end-all be-all... I never converted to EMG's because I liked playing lower gain stuff too much as well.
@@gollumthewicked most of the iconic metal albums from the late 80s till like the 10s, where recorded with EMGs. They are great pickups really.
Thanks for the reupload. Like yesterday, i like the Tosins best
Nice thanks. I modern s but would love to try the Townsend set.
Great demo man and great explanation of all the options per pickup. I own almost their complete line-up and I must say the only downside is to pick a favourite, I like them all.
Great which one you think has the best cleanest almost acoustic sound ?
@@johnnydswing Abasi, Scott lepage. Supposedly the Tim Henson has a nylon string acoustic sound, one of the few sets I dont own unfortunately
Nice vid man!! I really dig the tosins. Im planning on getting a set of white tosins to replace the moderns on the strandberg i purchased. Do you think i need to replace all electronics or just swap the pick ups out? The tosins have a 3rd voicing right?
The Tosins do have a 3rd voice, and also they should be paired with active pots, 25k rather than 250 so check what you have- but if it’s already got fishmans then it should be a drop in replacement
@@adamsteelproducer gotcha. Yes it already came with fishman moderns. Thanks man!
ok so heres a pretty silly question Adam... got a passive dual humbucker guitar here. is there anything to stop me from wiring up a stereo TRS jack socket, and having it always output both humbuckers on 2 separate channels? then i could have the ability to mix them together on their own different chains and/or use a different trigger mechanism elsewhere to switch between them. is that just totally dumb idea? but i think it would suit me :) hehe
That’s not a silly question! If your guitar has 2 separate volume pots, that’s very much possible as there can be two signal paths. Rickenbacker have been doing this for many years as Rick-O-Sound, and a lot of modern guitars do this as one output magnetic and one piezo. If you can get a TRS cable to a splitter it’s worth trying!
but what am really wondering here is if the passive pickup signal will be weak enough, not to pick up and undesirable crosstalk leaking between the 2 pickup channels inside the stereo 1/4 guitar cable. however a desirable or harmless milder crosstalk might sound ok / fine. or maybe there is some other issue.... do other guitarists ever do this?
Rick-O-Sound was entirely passive and used two single coils, to great effect. I don’t know anyone who does this with guitar but since it’s very possible it’s worth experimenting
Can any tell me if you don’t need the f- spacing on these type? Don’t see anything about it on fishman site.
Pretty sure either is fine, best person to ask if there’s nothing specific would be Ken Susi
I started watching this & got cut off. I Thought I got blocked🤪. I just bought a Jackson JS3 spectra, bass in March. It has active/passive humbuckers. I Don't know much about them. Let's see if I can learn something today✌💚🤘
Yeah sorry had to reupload because of some audio glitches. Hope you got something!
Pls tell me you pickup heights on the devin townsend set 🙏🏻
About 3 feet off the ground
I had matching sets of the Fishman Fluence Modern pickups with the Black Nickel finish installed in both of my Schecter guitars, one 6-String and one 7-String and I am never looking back! 😆🤘 It's no wonder why all of the Modern metal guitar players are going with the Fishman Fluence line. 0% latency, (Which compensates very nicely when recording through an audio interface.) Clarity, punch, definition. It's all there! 😆🤘
Question, could you just wire the fish man pickups as passive? I am new to guitar building and don’t know enough to understand the electronics of it yet…..yet!
Such as use one as a bridge, and instead of using the active setting, utilize it as a kill switch?
If that makes sense?
No you can’t do that, these are active pickups that work with 9V and a 25kOhm volume circuit, not powering them would sound like a dead battery, like a broken fuzz pedal.
Can you do a clean tone comparison?
I am very satisfied with my Fishman Fluence Modern Hub.
Unrelated to the video topic but that green guitar. That's the ONLY guitar I've seen with pickups rings that didn't look cheap. That thing's nice, dude
Is you guitar tuned to c standard ?
Not sure if I didn't get used to this tone yet, but I still prefer the EMG's in general.
Hey everyone’s got their preference! I definitely found in recording situations the Fluences sit a lot better with minimal effort in the mix. Hard to show in a video though without spending days tracking
Can the modern humbucker pickups work without a battery?
No, active pickups always require power
@@adamsteelproducer Thanks man.
I was set to like the Devins more, but the Tosin's surprised me!. My opinion on the moderns hasn't changed in that I don't like them though. no matter who reviews them, they sound more shrill, even on the different voice.
So are they active? Or passive?
I find devin's set is particularly noisy. Does anyone have this issue or its just me having a faulty set? Have other fishmans and no such problem
No noise at all on my set
@@adamsteelproducer thanks man! Guess need to contact thomann
Yeah idk but I kinda just don't care for active pickups it seems they just kinda filter out too much making the sound almost sterile and slightly digital felt this way about emgs a long time but kinda was liking the fishmans when they first came out but I think bare knuckles are the way to go
I guess the biggest thing I've taken away from this video is I like all three of the fishman sets shown for different reasons... If I were to put one in a guitar that didn't already have fishmans I might use the Abasi's (I have an Ibanez that has modern's..) I think the other take away is how bad the EMG's sound >
All my EMGs (Het Set, 57/66, 81X/60X and the Super 77) wipe the floor with Fishmans. They all have more roar and ballsy low end and sound generally meaner and livelier. Unfortunately both Fishman sets I have suffer from the same type of Hi-Fi-sterility, lack of low end and a weird congested upper mid heavy sound that almost sounds like a half cocked wah pedal. They're not bad pickups, but definitely far from being an EMG upgrade, on the contrary.

You sound like Jon Snow. 😆
You know nothing!
Visually, Stephen Merchant meets Jon Snow@@adamsteelproducer
Moderns are the best of the three fishman pickups. And no comparison to emg. Fishman is just better than emg in every way. Ty.
Fishmans shit on all of the "myths" people think of when they hear active pickups. I'd argue Fishmans are more dynamic than some passive pickups.
@@KeepTheGates agreed. 100 percent.
Tosin = Devs > Moderns
Heresy Mr Bucas 😉
idk what clarity are people talking about. these are probably the muddiest pickup i've ever heard.
