I think the other positive of Fishmans typically not mentioned in reviews is the very low noise floor. They work so clean in high gain applications.
So do a lot of inexpensive ones.
To be expected out of actives
I've recorded 3 releases with these pickups. All the DI's were reamped. There's NO noise.
I was always a passive guy, always stayed away from active pickups, until I bought my latest guitar, a 7 string Ibanez RGD Multi Scale guitar with Fishmans, and I absolutely fell in love with the sound, it's my main guitar, and I love it.
Dude, saame!!!
Its amazing
Must be the 71 ALMS-BAM Axion Label right? Ehheh I set a target on it, for my next rifle.
Same here… I’ve always hated actives until I tried Fishmans
This is one of the best Fishman Modern demos I've seen. Really like how you're not chuggaluggin the entire time.
@@scottbrower9052 well, just chugging or pretty much chugging most of the time is lame yes
@@scottbrower9052 kind of true but not
Agreed.
Most of the others are a high gain fest of djent and metal, I like that too but I need to know how the pickup handles the stuff I play more often.
Sounds like it does.
seriously. all i've seen is djent heads showing how sterile and souless these pickups can be. Good to see someone showing actual tones.
Chugchugchugchugchugchugchug
Holy smokes, his playing has improved a lot in the last couple of years!
Lol. Not really.
Gregor Samsa oh shut up u
fuckin loser hahaha
dont notice improvement he was great to begin with imo he still great
@@Jay-rd6fe great? I think has made huge strides in his playing
If possible (and not too much trouble), coil-splitting demonstrations would also be incredibly appreciated. You're setting up one hell of an archive for pickup tones, and coil-splitting is fairly important to many of us.
That said, regardless of if you decide to or not, thanks a ton for these videos.
I love the Modern Set. It’s the sound I’ve always heard in my head- and NO noise.
The versatility of these fishman moderns are really unmatched. The ability to switch between passive and active voices is just amazing. For a guitar that is to be used for just about every genre out there, I really can't think of any better. That said, if I want to play metal and only metal, I'd still go for the classic EMG 81/85 (or 60 neck) just because there's just something about that distinct 'chunk' from the 81 that is just so unique to that pickup that I really love especially for death metal.
The 81/85 has pedigree
How do you rate 81/85 cleans over gibson standard 490s?
@@kremepye3613 That's highly dependent on the other equipment in your signal chain and the style you play. Then again, you don't really get an 81/85 set to play clean, right?
@@kremepye3613 plastic sterile compressed clean.. in some context can be used..but for most common styles is the worst pickup i ever tried...and i tried for +5 years.
I've been playing 51 years. I've always been more of a passive fan. I got a ESP M1007 7 string with Fishmans a few months back. I love them!
In the last 6 months I bought a Schecter SLS Elite and a sparkly red Stephen Carpenter signature SC 608B (8-string). Both came with Fishman Fluence. The former the modern Humbucker set and the latter with the Stephen Carpenter signature set. These pick-ups are far better than any of the passive pick-ups on the other guitars I have or have played. The cleans are so crystal the the heavies so defined. I could never turn back.
The answer is yes. The Seymour Duncan JB and EMG81TW pick ups kick the fish man in the teeth.
A shootout between these, the classic EMG combo (81/85), a set of Dimarzio ToneZone/PAF and Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz or 59 would be a good comparison. IMO.
Love to see a shootout between these and some PRS SE 85/15S pickups.
Please do the cool split. Part of the draw to Fishman for me is the amount of sounds you can get from one set of pickups, and the coil split option adds another layer to their potential for me
The with distortion you can barely tell the difference between single and humbuckers.
Its amazing!!
position 2 and 4 are coil split.
Philip if you get the time, I would really love for you to demo the coil split on these. There's no demos I can find that show the coil split on the moderns well, and that's what I was most looking forward to about these reviews from you. Great work all the same tho!
They don't coil split, they just have two different tones.
@@MrScrofulous Fishman Fluence Modern humbuckers are generally installed with 2 different voicings, and a hi frequency tilt option, both of which are controlled via push pull pots included in the box. Following the manual, and with a little bit more soldering, they are also able to be coil split, replacing the hi frequency tilt push pull.
They really do emulate a single coil sound better than a traditionally tapped humbucker. I have a set of the Devin Townsend Fluence pickups, and the choice of active or passive voiced humbuckers with the same choice for a single coil sound.... fantastic.
@@rasputinsbeard3899 awesome! How do you feel about the Devin Townsend set? I'm a fan of his music, but I can't find many good demos of his set (his demo has soooo much delay and reverb haha)
@@JayJayden45 I know, right? I watched his demonstration, and he ran it through his complete setup. Sounded great, but no actual indication of the dry sound. As well as the plug for the output for the pickup, there are another two points that can be switched to ground. One will switch the voicing to a single coil sound emulation, and the other will cut back the power of the pre-amp to give you a more passive sound. This basically gives you four sounds for each pickup; humbucker active, humbucker passive, single-coil active, and single-coil passive. The sound quality from these pickups is soooooo very nice and crisp. I can't recommend them enough. You'd best be decent with a soldering iron though, because if you use all of the options, there are a lot of little wires in a very tiny space. Also, the kit comes with all of the electronics you need, including two push/pull volume pots.
I'm DEFINITELY interested in hearing some coil-split sounds! Great upload! Thanks! Later...
Hi phil! What's funny is that i have a guitar equipped with those and had absolutely no idea that they were splittable until i heard you talk about it! A video demonstrating the tones and the soldering would be greatly appreciated, thank you and as always very good video
i see no one has replied so I'll give it a shot..... you probably need a 5 way switch if you dont have one to split coils with or a couple mini toggles .... a quick google search on wiring should help you out with that .. just make sure you get the right pick up configuration you are currently using when you do the search and be sure it match's for im guessing you are using active's so be sure the schematic is for active's . or passive whatever you are using.
I like the Classics a bit more than the Moderns (I have Classics in a Kiesel Bolt and Moderns in my Osiris). But either way, Fishman has the best and most versatile active pickups I've ever played.
Great video, Phil! Love the series already. I think this video covered the tonal ground that most people would want to hear from an active pickup - dead clean and modern distortion. It did really well with that; nailed the contemporary metal tones. The cleans seemed to have a bit of natural compression, which I found interesting.
Regardless of which pickups you put the Fluence set up against (I'd suggest PAF-style), please play them through a Plexi-style amp or pedal! It would be really interesting to hear how it'd handle that - would it still sound scooped, or would you be able to get some classic bite out of it?
Also really hyped to see some TV Jones pickups in the future!
I recently bought no less that three, new-for-2020, ESP electrics. One of those is the new Phoenix in black cherry and it came with the Fishman Fluance Moderns. From that guitar, I have already installed three sets of the same pickups into my other guitars, and will be installing a fourth into my new PRS burl wood top this weekend. They are really something else, and I cannot overstate how much I love them. It is disheartening how they make you view your other guitars' pickups. Just ruins you for everything else, and I suppose that would be the ONLY negative about them. lol.
You should do a frequency response curve for all these pickup tests. Testing 100+ pickups, as you announced, having EQ curve to compare them all would be great.
They're the best pickups I've ever played! They make everything sound good!!
Are they the ones that come in the new charvel guitars?
I just got a Ibanez with fishman moderns and I absolutely love them. My favorite pickups. Sound like a jb/distortion mix in the bridge to me. Idk. 1 thing I noticed that I wasnt expecting is their so damn quiet. I turned my noise gate down by 40%. Sustain is killer and still get really heavy sound. I don't really like active pickups and have changed them all out in guitars I've gotten for passive but these definitely do not sound active. I was overly surprised.
It would be awesome if you could compare the Fluence Open Core Classic's with the Moderns, or even some of artist models. The classic's have 3 voices and one is a single coil voice. There isn't too many videos that I have found that really compare the different Fluence models. I got a set of the Keith Merrow Fluence pickups in my Schector Keith Merrow MKIII Artist guitar and they sound incredible. Every voicing and pickup selection has the magic. They are so good it makes me want to put Fluence pickups in my other guitars. I am really curious about the new Javier Reyes Fluence pickup set too.
Compare the 81 and 85 EMGs I know you have set. lol
I had 81 and 85s in my prs torero and put these in so I could have more tones to play with, the 81/85 are really for just metal. The neck sounds crisper and more full with the fishman and less muddier then the emgs
I have a les Paul with fishman modern pickups and I have a dean Razorback with EMG 81 85 set. I like the fishman modern pickups a lot more. EMG pickups sound the same and sooo many people use them, I have been trying to look for my own tone.
@@87BruceH there‘s a good reason for it. They wouldn‘t be that widely used in the metal world if they weren’t top notch.
EMG 81/89r all the way!
One of the things I most appreciate Phil, is how you often test sounds/guitars with 3 different amps, TUBE amps! the amp is an instrument too, tube gain and feel might be emulated, & I’ve never played an emulated tone, I’m not knocking it, but I play at a pretty specific almost stage volume, and it’s the harmonic overtones I’m looking for, if I played clean…. a sansamp. or the jazz chorus amp, or even a Polytone is fine, but that’s not my wheelhouse, nor are gain pedals, smashing the 1st tube gain stage with hot pickups & or a boost is what I like.
The best way to hear those overtones is to smash a power chord like you do. Fluence may not have wire, but that wonderful meaty Kerrang sound of a big chord says those PU’s are the future, me? I’ll stick with passive, SD’s into an MB, Amp….I’ve got enough 2 pickups guitars, and I’m done with all the guitar upgrades, or purchases I’m likely to do, but it’s amazing to see all the incredible products nowadays and you are detailed, consistent and specific about what you do and how you do it. I always know what I’m gonna get 🙂. Rock on Phil😃
Nice review. I don't play heavy guitar, so I appreciate that Phil didn't assume I wanted to hear how heavy these pickups get.
Finally someone addressed, why no one ever uses active pickups with fuzz. By the way I'd love to see these Fluence Modernes, against the EMGs that Hetfield uses (is it 85/61? Cannot remember), and also, against a Seymour Duncan JB&59 set. I choose these sets, as they are the most popular for heavy sounds.
Blackouts and the sentient and nazghul or black winter set from Seymour Duncan vs emg 81/85 vs fluence
Nazguls are probably one of the best pickup's I've personally heard.
Phil you're easy to like, my friend. As always, nice demo.
Awesome video!!! I hear a lot of talk about the Fishman pickups but very little demonstration about the range of sound, you did that admirably. Nice post
These imo are the best pickups on the market right now. Very versatile. Love them!
This is an amazing start to what I am sure will be an fun and educational series. Thanks Phil.
I played some that are in the new Jackson ‘s . They rock
Yes, we need to hear the split coil sounds please.
Yes😭
My headless Kiesel 7 string has fishmans moderns. Amazing, massive guitar with a huge range. I still think the amp has the most to do with it.
Ur playing get better and better everytime i watch your new video 🤩🤩🤩 good job bro! Thank you for ur videos man, very helpful!
I'm a little late to the party, but I just traded some gear for a 1988 America Standard Tele that had been loaded with the Fishman Fluence pickup set. I didn't really know what I was getting, I just assumed they were better than the original pups. I love these things. Absolute bomber set of pickups.
Great job Phillip ! I just got a set of the Moderns yesterday and for now only want to use the ceramic bridge pickup in one of my single hum guitars..your video here really displays how good these sound, and going to have my guitar ready tomorrow morning..Thanks for a great video demo here.
Took awhile to get adjusted to the bright punchy sound of Fishman's.
After tweaking my rig to accommodate I realized Fishman's are like hot rodded Wolfgang's with a built-in high-quality noise gate.
My first set was the Will Adler humbuckers that I installed on my LTD, then I got a Modern set for my Schecter 7 string. The Fluences ended up sounding too...clear and a little “artificial” to my ears. Long story short I eventually sold both sets and went with passives. DiMarzio, Duncan, BKP, Guitarmory, etc are still king.
Jaxon Victoria exactly how I feel! Way too clear and transparent for me. Best way to describe it is that it like you’re playing through a clean amp with lots of headroom, just feels weird. There’s nothing better than that midrange growl of Duncan’s and dimarzios for me
Between the two which did you prefer? Adler or Modern ?
Hard Rock Relics I preferred the Moderns because they remind me of the EMG 81. The Adler set is a lot more versatile though. And pretty close to sounding passive.
I'm on my 3rd fluence set and I agree, I threw them in my Jackson USA Soloist but a nice set of passives just sound more alive. I'd say my Soloist is my fakest sounding guitar right now. I personally think they're a lot of hype and I bet half their artists leave in a couple of years for the next new thing.
I bought the classic humbucker and 2 single coil fishman pickups, cant wait to install them
Fishman Fluence is my favorite pickup especially the Abasi set
How cool is it that you demoed these new pickups in the swap-out modules for the new guitar!!
Phil this is going to be a GREAT series.
It seems to me that on thing Fishman accomplished with the Fluence line is that you can turn the volume down on the guitar and it doesn't sound like crap like most humbuckers. They say that as long as there is some battery power remaining you should not hear any drop-off in sound or performance. Maybe it's all in my head but I swear I can hear it as the battery gradually loses power.
LOVE IT! Bring more! Thanks Phil!
I've considered changing out the EMGs in my Jackson Soloist, I think the Fluence Moderns are really nice. But they're so expensive, don't think they're a big enough improvement to justify the price.
They sound a bit better than the 81 (9volt) imo but i like the EMG 57 waaaay more.
@@BrianWalters97 I've never tried the 57. I currently have the 81 (Bridge) and the 85 (neck) on my Soloist, they came with the guitar when I bought it back in 2011. Quite happy with them to be fair. But it's the only guitar that I have, had to sell my other guitars. And although they work great for the genre I play most of the time, they're not too great for some less distorted stuff imo.
nah get BKP Warpigs instead!
The Fisherman's blow EMGs out of the water.
i love fluences but bear in mind, Mick Thomson uses seymore duncan blackouts in his jacksons.
If Fishman made the installation of these pickups easier with no soldering required I think they will be unstoppable. As a novice at modding guitars EMGs appeal to be because of the ease of installation. How about a shootout with the EMG 57/66TW which has a selectable single and dual coil sound? It seems like the best option to compare with the features of the Fishman pickups
That is a beautiful guitar! Have really enjoyed the show. Thank You for all the hard work you put into your content.
I'm so stoked for these pickup videos! Also, I'm having a custom guitar made and opted for fishman fluence pickups. I'd love to hear the coil split sounds as well because of course you have to Know your Gear! Keep up the great work Phil!
I just realised Phillip McKnight sounds like SAUL Goodman.
better call phil
They sound good, but I don’t hear anything dynamic at all. There is a lot of compression. They would be a good tool for the correct player.
@@ErebosGR I completely agree. However, the compression is not a bad thing if you play with a lot of effects and don't want a loud hum to come from your amp. I'm mostly thinking of David Gilmour when he switched to active EMG's for the Pulse tour. The right player and music style can ooze soul from soulless equipment. Active pickups also serve a vital role in modern metal because of the high output, lack of hum, and a defined individual string tone that can cut through high gain. I suspect this is why the majority of the demonstration was done with distortion. My favorite players will always be the the guitar, cord, and amp guys like Derek Trucks. If you want to hear from someone that is on the exact opposite end of the spectrum I would recommend watching Josh Smith's PG Rig Rundown. He has built his entire career around dynamic tones and is an absolute beast of a player.
@@ErebosGR I'm completely with you on this one. Boost and Noise Gate pedals can give you everything you need to play metal and still not loose the warmth, dynamics, and clean tones required for any other style of playing. Years ago I put a set of EMG 81/85's in a guitar and have hated them ever since. However, I do feel they have a punchy bite I cannot seem to get without them or a compressor pedal. I would be interested to know if bands like Metallica record with passive pickups and only play live with active ones.
It sounds really good for riffing out some Rock I'd say, as well as lead playing.
Love how Phil does a Trogley style riff at the end...
Would love to see them in a shootout with Blackouts. Yeah might as well coil split them since they can do it. Thanks!
that blue JP on the wall is gorgeous, that colour really does something for me, would love to add one to my rack one day 😌
Philip I'd love to see/hear a comparison of these Fishman's against s Seymour Duncan JB / 59 set. Thanks for doing these pickup demos!!!
Also curious, I’m not sure which I want for my first custom guitar.
Once I got a pair of these pickups I couldn't switch to anything else. The best part about them is how receptive they are, can't be replicated with traditional pickups imo
Overall I’d like to see the Fluence compared to high output heavy gain pickups
Coil split would be nice.
Would love to see a comparison against SD Black Winter set and EMG's 81-X/85-X
I own an Ibanez with an evertune bridge and the fishman fluence set. It is thrilling to play. I am now looking for a second Ibanez with the fishman fluence set but with a standard bridge. Cheers from Canada.
Hey, Phil. I've been looking forward to your pickup demos but you went from clean straight to high gain metal stuff. Most of us probably live somewhere in between those sounds.
I wanna hear an HSS fishman set
I need to still try Fishman Fluence pickups. Of all the active pickups I have used I always enjoyed EMG 85s. I am curious how they compare.
I'd like to hear how both pickups sound together. Those seem to be the sweeter sounds on a two humbucker pickup guitar.
I’d like to see it all of you can. Great video as always. I’ve always stayed away from active pickups but these sound great.
Nice demo Phil. I got interested in these recently, they're in the new top of line Schecter tele, which looks awesome.
....THANKS, PHIL! THOSE PICKUPS SOUND AWESOMER!!! WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET GREAT "SINGLE-COIL" TONE SOUND, WITHOUT THE DREADED "60-CCYCLE HUM"???!!!....
Love these pickups. Have them in a Gibson Les Paul studio.
The good about the Fishman pickups: No noise or distortion. The coil taps work. You can hear the single coil/humbucker switch. With both switches under the volume and tone (and the single pickup selector), no eases switches to deal with.
The bad: Trying to dial in a desired tone. We are not all into superficial distortion rants. We all don't haul around a pile of effects. A lot of times, you have to plug in and play with whatever settings the guitar amp has.
Anyone can make a shootout video on which brand is best. If the player doesn't have the personality to play different genres, they end up all sounding the same.
I currently have them in my slightly pre Kiesel Carvin DC700 seven string guitar. When I bought the instrument from an online sale from Guitar Center from South Bend Indiana, I thought it had the original pickups. GC doesn't always give you all of the specs on used guitars and basses. (They give you a thirty day return policy if you don't like the instrument). The instrument was set up properlly, but had Fishman pickups in it instead of the original pickups! Volume, tone, pickup selector, coil taps on each pickup. I had to literally run the guitar through a bass amp to get a smoother sound.
One of the ideas was to get the single coil mode to remain undistorted as the dual coil (humbucker) mode, which it succeeded. Just need to work on getting a personality out of them. Don't worry about the old style Gibson and Fender brands (with all of their variations).
Probably need to work on the tone pots. They can make a difference in the tone as well.
I think the split-coil comparison would be great.
I know that lots of people did this comparison, but would like to see you doing a comparison between Fishman and EMG. Also a comparison between Fishman and Seymour Duncan Humbucker (like JB or Pearly Gates) and your opinion about those. Thanks! Love your channel!
Great pickups and a great video. phillip you are the greatest.
Thank you Phil. I really like how you play the same riff multiple times going back and forth between settings. That helps me be able to hone in on the sound differences much better than just one or two go rounds.
Coil split on modern pickups is always pretty boring, I'd skip it. How about comparing them to the main modern competitors? Bare Knuckle Juggernauts/Ragnaroks, SD Alpha/Omega, etc?
Seconding this, for the Christ
NO comparison. I have Fishman Modern in my Balaguer Overlord Grond 7 string, and a Bulb HT-6 with the BKP Juggers, and the Fishmans are just super-compressed and boring compared to theJuggers, which also split beautifully. I think the FIshmans make studio and live players happy, cos predictable, and low noise etc, but they don't encourage me to pick up Grond.
I prefer the Fishmans to all these pickups. They just have a cut that the others don't. They are sharp sounding while the other pickups are really round.
Great review! I appreciate that the demo wasn't with straight metal. I'd be really curious of a shootout between these and the Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz set. Quite different pickups, but would make for an interesting comparison.
Enjoyed the video very much. The audio quality was good and the presentation was much more polished.
Although I had heard 'of' these pickups I had yet to actually hear them. They sounded very good to me. I am surprised. In terms of a shootout it might be cool to hear them compared to a comparable pair of pickups from Lollar or Bare knuckle. Nice job Phil.
I was interested in these fishman pickups so I was glad to see your review. Nice demo Phil with tasty licks and clean chordal playing that really showed what these pups can do. I would like to see you compare them with the PRS 594 McCarty 58/15 LTs 2020 or 2019 earlier and/or perhaps even the new S2 model. I was thinking the S2 might be a good candidate for these pups. Thanks
i never thought they were hype at all. i'd get a set but i'm already pretty happy with the pups in my guitar as it is. maybe if i ever get another one.
I would have liked to hear that guitar before installation as well as after
ive played fluence active pickups and they are great. better than normal passive pickups, very clear, great tone. HOWEVER. I think that lace sensor has several passive pickups, particularly alumatone, that are even better. just as clear, even quieter, also louder (higher signal noise ratio) lighter and no battery needed. if your looking for best possible pickups, lace sensor should be on your list to check it out...
I noticed right off the EVENness of the strings and you strummed that first chord
Hi Phil,I like that Somnium guitar..Just got a Strandberg 6 Modern Guitarist /limited run with these pickups in it..Both pickups together sound good too..Please demo the coil split on these pickups..No other channels have..Thanks for all the reveiws you do..
EMG 57/66 set vs Fluence Moderns plz. Great content love the show!
I think in the digital age this is the future for electric guitars for all professional artists
My favorite active pickups are emg 60 and 81. The 60 sounds super sweet in the neck and 81 is pure balls. I run them on 18 volts
Coil Split Please !
I'm looking forward to the fishman fluence open core pickups in the charvel so cal style 2. They look really versatile and well built.
To me they sound great but honestly don’t blow any other pickup away !! So yes hype
U sure your last name isn't Travolta, Phil? I'm sure u get that a lot:) great videos btw, love'em!
Huge difference between the bridges on the fuzz that really caught me off guard
Really kool to hear the clean tone for once
I am now a happy Fishman Modern Fluence player.
I got super excited when the printed circuit technology was announced. I am a big technology fan and very much against voodoo like "star pickup winders" and that whole culture. Over the course of the next few years I've been trying SUPER hard to like them. Alas, I have to call the lack of voodoo on these pickups.
Maybe compare them with some bare knuckle options. I think that would be badass.
Cheers
Id like to see these against all the mainstay actives (emg 81, 85, and 60 as well as the duncan blackouts) i kinda wanna see a showdown between these and an invader tho idk why
Dimarzio Super Distortion or Dimarzio 36th Anniversary Pafs
Hank Waters PAFs ;)
Got them in my Burny lp. It's a great combo.
oh yeah. 36th anniversary is my favorite humbucker!
Probably a dumb question, but still using the Supersonic 60 for your overdrive/distortion and hi-gain? That complete combination sounds great!
I still love the EMG bridge / Tele neck combo you stumbled upon when first showing this guitar, and think you should compare all pickup combinations against this.
The Fishman Fluence vs. Seymour Duncan Black Winter vs. Bare Knuckle Aftermath vs. EMG Het set would be an interesting comparison imo.
