You know you love ola when he starts his video with a Lenny kravitz riff. The man has pretty good taste besides the immense talent of reviewing gear and always being so transparent and honest about them.
My thoughts exactly. That song was with Slash too.
Man! You called it haha.
Slash wrote the riff, do I remember this right?
@@mudcastI do not know. It definitely sounds like a Slash riff. I believe I’ve even seen video of GNR performing the song.
I bought the Killswitch Engage and Tosin Abasi sets for that reason, to have 3 voices. These pickups are just amazing, and so consistence in their sound across all their offering.
I was about to say the Tosins, in the EMI anyway, definitely have a split coil sound. They’re fantastic.
I just put a KSE set in my SLS evil twin and set it in drop C and I can't put it down. I have a will adler set that I was going to put in my MK iii but I realized that it's open core spacing lol
@@mikevalletta4067 This is exactly why my RG with the KSE pups in Drop C are my absolute favorite hahaha
Checking the peak frequency on the fishman website, kse voice 3 is different from normal modern voice 3, also different from tosin's. However I can't find a video comparing them so I have no idea which one sounds better haha
I've had the original Modern 7's and Stephen Carpenter's Sig Fluence 7's for years. And with the Modern 7's I modified my guitar so that I have voice 1/2 Bridge on the volume push pull, voice 1/2 Neck on the tone push pull, voice one low gain neck, neither, bridge and neck on a three way toggle and the coil tap Bridge inner coil, humbucker, coil tap Bridge outer on another 3 way and another three way for the neck coil tap inner coil, humbucker, coil tap outer coil. And that's all accessible from the outside of the guitar with all the switches near the volume and tone controls but not in the way at all. And lastly I have the High Frequency Tilt wired to a three way slider inside the control cavity and it's setup as hf tilt bridge only, neither hf tilt, or both bridge and neck hf tilt. But I don't think the hf tilt is as nessesary with the 7 string pickups. It's more likely that you'd want hf tilt engaged on the regular 6 string pickups which typically have thinner brighter strings etc. But since I had everything else wired I thought I might as well give myself the option to use hf tilt. My point of writing all that was to say, I know a lot of guys get the abasi and Killswitch sign sets for the three voices but you can pretty much get the same thing with the standard Fluence Moderns if you just use the coil tap (sounds like a coil split even if it's technically a coil tap) pads on the back of the pickup. And I will also say that these pickups really need access to all their options, that's what makes them so versatile. Unlike with regular passive pickups where they do one sound and it's a pretty versatile one. With the Fluence Pickups in voice one or two you get very articulate sounds but you need to wire up all the other options to really get all the versatility they can offer which is completely worth it. I think some people who aren't in love with the Moderns (or any other Fluence Pickups) would like them a lot of they tried them with all the options wired up.
The F chord arpeggio never fails, always beautiful
The key of F…Semi Gayidity

More Solars with binding please! 😃
absolutely!!! maybe an archtop as well.
Youp. Looks like my RGIR20 and 27 - Iron Label series. I like both so much.
binding is magic
Looks good with the reverse headstock, please test the new dean zero and v they look gorgeous
For passive humbuckers, if you can wire up a pickup to switch between series and parallel it makes for a passable single-coil(ish) sound without the volume drop. Vola does this on some of their models.
Have a pair in my ec-1000 and they sound amazing. Very versatile
On the original Fluence Moderns you could actually split them by soldering a few more leads to them and the split worked like actually splitting the pickup. On guitars that had them from Ibanez and Strandberg you could actually have splitted versions of both Voice 1 and 2, which made it even more versatile.
So the new system of having it as a completely different voice is more straight forward but more limited
Exactly, my guitar tech installed a set in my guitar in a way that I can split in the two voices and also chose the outter or inner coil, 6 "different" tones per pickup.
@@marcosviniciusyokoyamamazu4284 yup! Not complaining about the update because they did make it straight forward, but they should've either made it with 4 voicings or just clarify about the splitting hack.
The old pickups definitely had traditional single coil noise and volume drop when splitting though so I'm somewhat tempted to swap out my old moderns for the new ones.
Yeah my strandberg has coil split with Fishmans. A lot of tonal options.
Any instructions for how to split the old Moderns? My Schecter has voice 2 for bridge and neck on separate push/pulls, and I'm wondering if I could rewire so one push/pull controls voice 2 for either PU, and the other push/pull controls split for either PU.
That sounds so damn good! Fishman nailed it.
Fun fact, the Matt Heafy Moderns (I only got because of the gold colored indent) 3 or 4 years ago have always had these 3 voices and were only $20 more for the set!
I have those in my Dean Cadillac. The Matt Heafy Set in White. There good.
Sounds great! I like having options and I’m also a passive humbucker player.
I recently installed Kirk Hammett BoneBreakers in my active guitar and wowwee does it sound killer.
I bought the Kirk Hammett black sparkle V a few months back and the bone breakers are WAYYYY better than the 81/81 or 81/60 combo for sure!
This is why I love my Tosin Abasin fishmans, they’ve offered this single/split coil tone this whole time and sound amazing. Now that it’s gonna be part of the moderns though that’s definitely going to be great, especially because a lot of companies that offer fishmans stock in their guitars usually offer the moderns. Now they are versatile as hell
I have Fishman Moderns in my LTD and my 2000 MIJ RG7420 and they can’t be beat!!! Such a bite to cut your head off!!! Especially for 7 string playing. Great video brother. Peace
I said this when fishman fluence first came out, and I still can't tell the difference between the humbucker modes. Glad to hear that they're offering a singe coil option though. Fluence Moderns are now pretty close to the Abasi signature set.
The difference is subtle, but its definitely there, its more apparent when you're playing clean, the passive vocie is slightly warmer n not a ls tight, pretty sure there's a subtle shift in the mid frequencies too. The single coil option is q very nicr addition for sure, especially because the difference is no longer subtle
Took me a year before i noticed the difference between voice 1 and 2 on my classic set, i changed from a shitty boss multi effekt to stl plugin and suddenly there was a impactful difference
Those cleans sounded amazing through my monitors! Well done Fishman! Dynamics, Dynamics, and even more Dynamics! Gotta get my hands on one of these soon!
i love the throw back "threeeee" i need to watch that dvd again
100% on voicing 2. It's the way to go. If only I had a tone knob I'd be interested in these new pups ;)
My Epiphone Les Paul Matt Heafy Origins is this set up, and I absolutely love it. So versatile for pretty well any situation or style of music
Good to hear a bit of Slash/Kravitz amongst those insane riffs 😮😂
And a lil' bit of Slayer : ) I mean, inspired by Slayer...
those first 3 Kravitz albums are straight fire...if you love music.
Indeed!
@@spy-v-spy1848 totally agree man, he hasn't been the same since
I’d love to hear a comparison between the splits on these vs the Abasi Fishmans. The Abasi’s are my favorite pickups, but this might even the playing field between the two.
That guitar looks awesome btw
I have a late 90s carvin bolt that my dad gave me, and ive changed pickups like 6 times. I put fishman classics in them, with the 3rd voice. Fucking incredible. Also had a usb charger put right in the pickguard between the pickups.
That’s cool. I still have my custom Carvin V from 1990. My daughter can have it when I’m dead. In the meantime, I bought her an ESP.
Glorious clean sound when it's split.
Sounds amazing 😮 I would imagine these would be the most versatile pickups available on the market today.
They already were ngl
Check out Cycfi pickups for real versatile pickups. Fishmans are great for straight good “predefined” sounds. Cycfi you can have any voice you want
Alnico passives win for me completely, but if you're gonna go active, I've always believed in going with Blackouts. Seymour Duncan all the way home.
But this is a great improvement for versatility. I bet these'll be in everything in no time.
It’s got a set of Devin Townsend pickups in my Solar G1.6 and it’s a machine.. I had extra switches put in too so I’ve got voice one and two on push/pull volume pots for each pickup, a master tone knob and then coil split switches for each pick up underneath the volume knobs. The variety of tone is unreal.
Plus I put pickup rings on them because I think that looks better than the regular ring-less look of the Solar G range.
Btw, make a double cut! Take the G type and put an equal sized cut in the top part. I’d buy two in a second.
getting the new modern on the ESP I ordered. was going to get Solar lefty V but was up in the air about getting the extra complication of the evertune, ( I know its no FR so not that complicated) and Duncan pickups or these pickups on the ESP. In the end I went with the ESP because of Fishman and it was a bit cheaper after shipping and custom charges with Solar to Canada.
Can I just get a copy of THAT guitar right there? All set up with the Fishman's? I mean, that just sounds awesome!
Ive tried a Cort x700 with that pickups and that sounded so f amazing
I am more impressed how you are becoming better and better guitarist day by day! \m/
I like the Fishman Tosin Abasi signatures. They sounded the best to me
I’m a recent believer in Fishman and active pickups . Recently got the Jackson Dinky Evertune that has Fishmans, though I think they are open core classics? Anyway they’re amazing!
Bought a Jackson JS-22 with those installed. Upgraded locking tuners, claw, springs. It rips
Instant set for "milton cleans", without needing a piezo pickup. I wish they did a dedicated separate push pull knob or switch for this feature, to be able to select split in N, B and N+B config which would really sound like a emo-tele!
Split voice is selectable on a pin and independent for n vs b so im pretty sure you can do that! Just depends on how you want to wire it
@@usnavyfish so they have internal jumpers?
The original FF Modern pickups had the option to coil split. You just had to solder the lead to the spot.
My point exactly
It had the volume dip and all of the noise without the single coil sound.
@@luiscamacho1986the tosin set had coil split no volume loss or noise
I got these but in the 7 string for Christmas and installed them in my Mark Holcomb Signature PRS SVN and wired up every feature along with turning the tone pot into a bass contour nob and I absolutely love these pickups but still have the trusty EMG 81 in other rugs
I resoldered my Schecter Solo II SLS Elite so the Voice2 is the main voice, Voice1 is enabled by pulling up the neck volume pot. Changed bridge volume pot to push-push. It enables the split coil mode. In this mode I enable coils that are closer to the neck. So now i have 4 modes of sound. But already ordered Lundgren Black Heaven :)
Dude I have an SLS Elite and that's exactly what I want to do. Did yours have voice 2 on two separate push/pulls, one for the neck PU and one for the bridge PU? That's how mine is wired and it seems like a waste. I want voice 2 to be default, and voice 1 to be on a single push/pull for both PUs, then another push/pull for split coil on both PUs. If I'm understanding you, that's what you did. Was it difficult?
EDIT: Just realized you have two volumes pots, I only have volume/tone. So your setup might not be possible for me?
@@SpookyApparition just bought an sls elite also, these are the old gen fishman moderns, only 2 voicings are on the quick connect. the coil "taps" (not the same as coil split like in the video) requires more soldering. I looked this up too and just waiting on fishmans to go on sale
@@BuddyGuy0621 ahh, you're right, it's a coil tap, not split coil. I'm still curious if I could do something similar though: have one push/pull control voice 2 for both PUs, and then have one push/pull control coil tap for both PUs. Seems possible but might be beyond my skill level
@@SpookyApparitionHi, you got me right. One PushPush is for both pickups coil split and another PushPull is for both pickups voice 2/1. You can do it on your guitar as well, using volue pot's and tone pot's PushPulls. It was not difficult, but i had to solder 2 additional wires from each pickup to potentiometers for coil split mode. My pickups are version 3.5 and 3.2 with solder pads (not pins) for coil split modes.
@realniter Thank you, I appreciate the info!
Emg have had active pickups that split for awhile now. Just saying....
That little studder in 99 main riff always gets me. So good.
Cool! I might consider putting these pickups into my 7-string Ibanez to make it more versatile.
Great video! Would love it if someone could compare these with the Abasi pickups, since these both seem to cover similar grounds now with their single coil voices.
I found the Moderns to sound a bit too sterile and one-dimensional for my tastes. However, the Devin Townsend Transcendence set is amazing and very easy to swap into a guitar that already has Fluence pickups in it. Would be great to see Ola review that set, I'm sure he'd love them.
The Dynamics are incredible! I love these pickups
I would love to have an S2.6 in white with the black binding. It's so sad it's not available anymore.
oh man... i love the clean sound.. good preset also
there needs to be a baritone or extended scale version of this guitar...
28"+ for sure
I was very skeptical of the fishman hype but I ended up installing the modern set in my current guitar which used to have passive Duncans and it was the best decision for that particular guitar. It sounds so much better and the versatililty with the different modes as Ola notes is exceptional.
That binding looks insane 😮
The Solar with a white binding looks amazing! I can't find it on the Solar website. Will it be a production model at some point? Maybe in 7-string version? :)
agreed....
it's there ....S2.6C - CARBON BLACK MATTE
@@flawless_degenerate call me crazy, but I didn't see it there before. I just miss the FF Moderns. Thanks.
Your definitely my favorite youtuber your playing and guitar brand is amazing
Hey Ola, you should take a moment and try the EMG 81x active pickup, sounds similar to the Fishman pickups
yes, the mid honk is really similar, thought the same.
I love the 2nd "passive" voicing out of the fishman moderns
It’s good to see dot inlays! I know it’s a taste thing, but if there wasn’t tribal on every guitar that would be a big sell.
I agree, they need to ditch the weird solar inlay
There are the SVART variants that does not have the solar tribal which I am not a fan of either, but then again those do not have any inlays, just side dots.
@@NauEktila the SVART guitars have the Solar tribal at the twelfth fret, it's just that you don't see it that well since it's black.
@@NauEktila they have the tribal as well, only in black. actually very visible in reallife lighting.
oh, that is a bummer, and I can see it now, somehow I had missed it on the marketing pictures before. Still I think it is better than the regular white/pearloid one
@@nj1255
EMG has been doing this for a while now.
Plus with EMG the pickups don't need to be grounded. I own both and I wouldn't pull EMG's to go to Fishman just switch to 18 or 24 volt mod
Didn’t know this! I stand corrected!
Thanks!
@@OlaEnglund Any EMG that has WT in the model name has this function. I prefer the 57 WT/66 WT set.
@OlaEnglund i am trying to do the same thing on my parts caster. Did you use a diagram to wire it up to a five way switch? I can’t seem to find this config anywhere.
You need to sell that exact guitar with those pickups I’ll buy one!
I just installed these into my LTD deluxe replacing my EMG 707/81-7. Best decision I ever made.
Glenn Fricker says noooooo!! A pickup video! Those don't matter! LMAO
The same guy who constantly ranted about drum samples for years and now sells a drum VST.
that , the haunted riff is what got me into the haunted.... it's so hard!
i’m going to set my Ibanez up the same way. it came with the original moderns with a toggle between the volume and tone. Just going to go ahead and throw a five way and these in there and call it good. Nice review.
We need some S Series baritone guitars, starting at 28". Would be huge.
These are nice. I think I prefer them over most active pickuos.
I am very partial to Carvin/Kiesel pickups with the splits and phase switches for this reason. Plus they can be used passively, too.
I do tend to like passive pickups more but these hybrid passive pickup types get the best of both worlds. But active pickups work really well in large venues with all the possible frequency interference and background signal noise. I see why so many arena bands use them.
I also prefer full range pickups. Equalizing at the source makes little sense. You can't add in what has been taken away at the beginning of your signal chain.
Opening riff was pretty funky bro 🤘
Lenny kravitz song
Beautiful guitar...❤
It reminds me of the Ibanez Mick Thompson MTM2.
Those sound 😮 incredible 😍
just ordered a stranberg prog 7 and they stock with these moderns.cant wait
Have to say that fishman fluence are my favorite pick ups. Even over a passive pick up
the Ceramics have had coil split for years no? I have an approximately 8 year old ceramic with them. It has normal voice, V1 -6dB drop, HF tilt (to simulate treble loss when using a long long cable),V2 which was the passive sound, and at the bottom were two metal pads where you can solder your own connections for single coil.
Yes! I thought I had lost my mind because I bought a set of Modern’s when they were first released. Did some custom wiring with a Megaswitch and wired my 5 way to split both the bridge and neck together in middle position, bridge split and neck in position 2, bridge and neck split in position 4. That was years ago so I thought maybe I was remembering something incorrectly.
I’d say they just made it easier to access now.
@@psycle1 I think by “new” Ola must mean the single coil mode on Solar guitars. There’s not actually a new fishman.
My favorite pickups
🎉
Smashed the like button right after the always on the run riff.
I love Lenny Kravitz riffs. He's a brilliant guitarist.
That was a great single coil sound.
This is wild! Thanks for another killer demo. I'm snagging a set for sure
I still like the classics better, but as soon as they got all the voices I immediately crafted an HSH Strat pickguard & I have something like 12 different unique tones now. It's went from an average guitar to a session player's instrument overnight.
Ola opening a vid with a Lenny Kravitz riff is something else.
@olaenglund That KM7 MKIII Keith Merrow sent you way back had this feature with his sig set of Fishmans based on the classic set. Sadly a short lived set for reasons never openly discussed. I love the 3 voicings on my KM6 MKIII, so versatile and great sounding I don't play anything else now.
Kravitz jam at beginning was awesome
Wouldn’t mind trying these. Currently rock EMGs or BK.
Are they similar to the Keith merrow version? MK III artist have the triple flippy switch too. Sounds way better than regular moderns.
Right on, sounds decent. Love your guitars man.
Sounds decent sums up my feelings on Fluence pickups. Want to love them, great technology, super innovative and versatile, but none of the sounds are as good as good passives to me. Interestingly even though Moderns are super popular the guy I know at my local guitar shop says he finds people increasingly over them and having them swapped.
Aay, my bare knuckle ragnoroks are split on both pickups. These things are absolutely insane.
I used to like the pull/ push function on my old team J-craft 1986 Ibanez Paul Gilbert I miss that option on all my other guitars
The original Fishman Fluence Modern also have an Coil Split funktion. My Ibanez RGD61ALET came stock with it. Voice 1, Voice 2, Split Voice 1, Split Voice 2.
So - what´s the difference to this?
You’re correct. I emailed Solar support yonks ago and they said that yes it is correct and feel free to wire it up yourself.
Normally Solar support is great and I suppose they did actually answer my question about the other voicing so yeah can’t complain except it would have been nice of Solar to offer all voices instead of 2 given you’re paying extra for the pickups, wiring and battery cutout.
First Fishman pickup I heard I didn't hate. Not bad. Not great. At least it doesn't have that fizzy top end like the others do.
Damn this video Ola plays clean the most
Great chuggs. Awesome review.
Never been a fan of active pickups and didn't expect much, but these sound pretty good!
I'm with you dude! I reviewed the electrical schematics of the Fishman pups and got pair for cheap off of Reverb to test in my Canibalismo and did an A-B comparison with a buddy who has a Gibson custom, and I swear you couldn't tell a difference between which guitar was which. And these are significantly different guitars which SHOULD sound SIGNIFICANTLY different. You just lost all the tonal dynamic range with active pups serving as a digital signal processor of sorts within your guitar which negates the guitar itself IMO.
That beginning tone was definitely Lenny Kravitz and a King's X mix. Very cool sound.
I really like the Solar duncan pickups myself . I got an esp with d activator dimarzio pups but like the Duncan's better in my Solar. Got some keith merrow fishmans in my schecter that are killer too.
Just bought a ibanez rg5120m prestige. With these hums. Hopefully she sounds this good
thought about this back when I saw mike string play an abasi Larada.... it was on the spiritbox patreon in case people want to know.... anyway, if I'm not mistaken, I think that's how all of Tosins Guitars have been wired since he started... because I was confused trying to find wiring diagrams with a push/pull and 5-way blade.... Been a fishman fan since
love that guitar
Dang, those cleans sound legit with the single coil sound. I have the Open Core Classics in my 7 string and i dont think they sound this good!
It seems similar to the Devin Townsend set with a third voice. I love that guitar and will be the next one I buy. With those pickups of course.
I just got the Devin Townsend set. I can’t wait to use it.
That is the only solar guitar I own (minus a washburn solar) and this thing is great, I dropped that down to Bb and then back up to standard (idk why) and its fine, kills it still, my work horse guitar
What's on the bridge and neck? Ceramic or alnico i mean. Nice play and sound 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
I’m sold… going to install into my Ibanez fr for sure… imagine those pickups in an ash body
Damn, that guitar is sooo sweet.
Quite awesome. I wish to see type X model with fishman fluence modern but without floyd though.
man that guitar is freakin awesome
