"I think Lupe did dumb this one down because I feel like I'm getting it" he said while missing the entire concept of the album. No disrespect bc flying blind into a Lupe album ain't for the faint of heart, but it's a risky endeavor nonetheless lol
This album has 3 layers ranging from the fantastic to the abstract to the concrete and real. These layers are: 1. Story about Amy Winehouse becoming a battle rapping samurai. Fantastical story told in vignettes where in the first track we see her singing with her Jazz band outside an opera house wishing she would one day sing inside. In the second track, we learn about how she gained her battle rap powers from some sort of mysterious character who puts a curse on her that makes her only speak in rhymes. Cake is her after winning her first rap battle and she is feeling on top of the world and happy with herself and her success. Etc etc. 2. Story of Lupe's real life journey as an artist is also snuck into the story and exists in parallel. Fyi, Lost in The Atlantic is a mixtape by Lupe where Atlantic is in reference to Lupe' previous record label Atlantic Records. "felt like she found land in the Atlantic on the low" Note that in Cake Lupe says "Lu will do/duel dual identities, dueling enemies". Lupe is using a dual identity to tell this layered story and the identities are battling for the spotlight/highlight throughout the album. 3. The abstracted general story about the artist's journey and the internal and external struggles they face. Lupe establishes this layer of meaning by avoiding using names throughout the album. Lupe never says Amy Winehouse and instead simply refers to her using pronouns and non-explicit ways like using a quote of hers. This allows the story to work as a general story about any artist, not just 1 or 2 in particular. The trouble Lupe went through to do this makes the whole thing more easily abstracted This album is really deep with a subtle cleverness to it. A lot of people are thrown off about the Amy Winehouse story but this album doesn't really let that constrain or limit the depth and relatability of its message. Simply brilliant!
Absolute insane piece of art what Lupe created there. And your analysis here is brilliant. Thanks a lot for that. I can the album really appreciate even more now. This and Common/Pete Rocks new release are on constant repeat.
The whole first track I was silently wishing “click on the chorus!” because that’s the key to the entire album haha. I ended up being glad you didn’t, it was impressive seeing how much of the story and meaning you put together without knowing the concept going in. It gave you the chance to have some really interesting interpretations and put a lot of the lyrics in a new light I hadn’t seen before. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Yeah it was a great reaction even though he didn't fully get the Amy Winehouse concept. He always dives into lyrics and gives me a new appreciation for them which is what I love about this channel ☺️.
the woman that he’s talking about throughout the album is Amy Whinehouse. this album is very special to me as a huge fan of both artists Lupe originally just wrote the song samurai as an ode to Amy who revealed to her producer before passing that she wanted to record battle raps. she was a huge hip hop head and this album turned into a beautiful tribute to her.
@@IanPachecoyeaaaaaaa knowing Bob and how he feels about annotations I’m sure he could read that and deny it even tho that’s literally what Lupe said lol oops
This is a concept album Lupe has had in the works for a while now. The chorus of the song samurai is directly quoted from a voicemail from Amy winehouse. You can watch videos of lupe talking about this concept or people explaining it but I think professor skye described it best as a “self portrait of Amy Winehouse” Lupe is exploring his own career and being an artist through this samurai Amy winehouse character
Amazing reaction, Bob. I'm really glad you didn’t know about the other meaning or concept of the album, because a lot of times, Lupe has albums with double meaning. So you can appreciate it from his point of view and now from Amy's
The whole chorus of samurai is quoted from winehouse’s VM where she says “I have these very beautifully alliterated little battle raps for you” to her producer I believe.. really great tie in and the album is fantastic front to back and regardless of the winehouse connections (although that adds a ton of depth on its own).. good ass production too.
Just finished this, love how by the end you gave up narrating to us while listening and let it play. Shit is amazing thanks for checking Lupe out even though he threw his career away. Cant wait for this final thoughts vid, once you have had the necessary time to research and reflect.
Oh yeah, I wasn’t expecting it so early! I love Lupe so much, he just keeps on delivering and growing. Hope you enjoy this, I think it’s masterful. Hope you also get to the rest of Lupe’s catalog!
I thought he was about to realize it sooner, and then at this point 28:23 but nope. I can’t wait for the reflection lol Love you fleshing things out on your own.
this makes me remember that you really have to do some Nujabes at some point. He was a really incredible producer from Japan, I feel like the production on the first track was definitely influenced by him
The theme here is Amy Winehouse becoming a battle rapper, as Lupe has been fascinated with her and this theory ever since he saw her documentary. If I recall correctly, there was a phone call from Amy that said that she wanted to battle rap, but of course we never saw that side of her. Lupe is here to create that story. The first few tracks are clearer on the concept, but the whole project is great, theme or not. As it’s been the trend for his most recent albums, Lupe has indeed “dumbed it down” a little bit for the average listener, but I’d argue that it’s not an actual dumb down, just a different way of exposing his concepts in this stage of his career. It’s definitely more accessible for the average consumer, but for Lupe stans, the meat is here, no doubt about that. Lupe is the best
Interesting jump from The Cool to this one. You'd probably notice that his older albums have a lot more mainstream appeal. He had big issues with his label the first few years of his career, so he's been independent for a couple years now. His most recent music is more Jazzy, which feels like the type of music that Lupe wants to put out, and in my opinion his best music. His previous album Drill Music In Zion is easily one of my favorite albums of the decade so far. So happy you're reacting to this one
@fernandoreyes680 Samurai and DMIZ are boring and mediocre records with average to mediocre production, bad singing from Lupe, and bad hooks. The only good/ great thing about both projects is the lyricism.

Hey Bob, Great reaction, I love your format. Listen in full, take it in then dive in to lyrics, long form format. I wish more people used this format. You probably figured it out by now but yes its about Amy Winehouse. She was A hip-hop head and revealed she had ambitions for rattletraps. The chorus in Samurai is a quote. It always helps to have a little bit of context going into his albums lol. Food and Liquor and The Cool are generally considered classics and more popular then his later music but most people familiar with his whole discography consider Tetsuo & Youth and Drogas Wav to be his best work. I Highly recommend Reacting to them. Don't worry no spoilers, just a little bit of context. Drogas Wav tells two stories, the first being Predominantly in the first half of the album and then the second in the second half, while both are told simultaneously in some songs. Its a little easier to follow the stories then in The Cool and Samurai. But very powerfully written. Also musically and production is probably right up your ally. Tetsuo & Youth doesn't have a linear story, but is widely considered his best Lyrically. Most songs have 3, 4, 5, narratives that kind of intertwine. Your gonna catch 10% on first listen, so be prepared to get your ass whooped if you decide to react to it. I suggest taking a break midway through first listen after Little Death(His best song lyrically in my opinion). I hope to see these reactions sometime in the future.
By the way bob Lupe Said himself that the idea for the album is basically from the prospect ofwhat if amy winehouse was a battle rapper so take what you will from that

album is about Amy winehouse becoming a battle rapper , there is a video of her saying she has been writing battle raps like she is a Samuri or something while she is talking to one of her friends on the phone
Lupe mentioned in an interview that his music is 50% finished when he puts it out. The listeners add the remaining 50% with what they think he's trying to say. I don't know if that helps when listening to his albums; its a good thing to remember that he actively thinks about that as he's creating.

I was wondering how many annotations you'd go through before you'd see this album doubles as being about Amy as a battle rapper, inspired by a voice mail she left her producer. Came on to comment, one thing about this album that separates from the rest of Lupe's projects, he really upgraded his homophone game. Even when you're reading along with the lyrics, there's so many parts on this album where a word or words can be heard multiple ways, his entendres and metaphors are off the charts on this album. Samurai (album) showcases everything he is good at, til eternity isn't my favorite song but I feel the most complex here, references to Chicago bulls, bulls in general, Jordan/Jackson, sneakers, so much... My favorite 3 are Palaces, no 1 headband and Outside, mumble rap came close. Edit: forgot, not only is this about Amy, it double perspectives with Lupe as a story about his own life and a exaggerated tale of his own rap life, performance anxieties (bigfoot), as he says, his most personal album.
When I see Lupe I click, it's just that simple. I think you did a hell of a job breaking it down for a 1st listen. Except the whole Amy Winehouse thing, but I keep telling people you don't even need to know she was the inspiration to get the gist of what's going on. People want to tie it too tightly to her. You were correct to think basketball when he said "hard in the paint" its a double entendre. We go hard, but we're the paint brushes making life into art.
Imo you should still try again to react to faces. Its an amazing album and i would love to hear your thoughts about it, doesnt matter most of it isnt a first reaction

One of, if not my favorite hip hop album of the year. It's up there with JPEGMAFIA's new record. I strongly recommend you listen to the album again through the lenses of knowing it's a tribute to Amy Winehouse. For me, that enhanced the album significantly even after I already loved it.
Please still react to Faces. I know it’s a depressing album but it’s so great. Mac Miller’s best project in my opinion. That and Swimming are my two favorites of his.

One of, if not my favorite hip hop album of the year. It's up there with JPEGMAFIA's new record. I strongly recommend you listen to the album again through the lenses of knowing it's a tribute to Amy Winehouse. For me, that enhanced the album significantly even after I already loved it.
Maybe check out another Mac album like GOOD A.M.!
NEW KILLER MIKE ALBUM DROPPED WOOOOOOOOOO
another mid from landlord, I would trade these last 2 for one El-P solo without a doubt
@@georgesummer536 respectfully disagree 🫡
Please still react to Faces. I know it’s a depressing album but it’s so great. Mac Miller’s best project in my opinion. That and Swimming are my two favorites of his.
Please do tetsuo and youth 🙏🙏
please react to more lucki albums like alternative trap and body high
