An entertaining and comprehensive look at removing and replacing rear suspension arms on the Discovery 3.
At some point you’ll need to replace suspension bushes and probably want to know if you can do it yourself on your drive. People will advise that you change the entire wishbone and not just the bushes. This humorous little film I made in the summer of 2017 shows all the ins and outs of what to expect when tackling this as a DIY Mechanic. I replaced the rear brake pipes and hoses, the toe links, drop links, knuckle bushes and the upper and lower wishbones, which came with polybushes preinstalled.
The part most people struggle with is the rear upper bolt, which is often rusted in place and needs cutting out. Mine was no different as the nearside rear upper mounting bolt would not come out. All I can say is that I took everyone else’s advice and used a reciprocating saw. I wouldn’t like to try an angle grinder, as I can’t see there being enough space to get to the bolt, the space is tighter than it looks in there. The nearside wasn’t nearly as rusty and didn’t require cutting. Another problem is the nearside knuckle bush bolts. Mine were rusted solid and needed a combination of cutting and heating up with a blow torch. But you’ll see all this when you watch the video.
For your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

Fantastic effort you've put into this video chap. I think all DIYers can relate to this! You had me laughing at different bits as it reminded me of past c*** ups! The D3 rear arms we left to a garage in the end after reading up on the forums and after watching this I can see why! Good on you for cracking on, keep them coming!
Thanks for watching, Chris! Really glad you enjoyed it. We've all tightened bolts when we should have been loosening them, but only some of us are brave enough to admit to it. As for making more videos, I'm sure there'll be more, as we both know the Discovery 3s and 4s were all sold broken and stay broken throughout their usable lives. One day mine will work for long enough to take it off road...
@@WeAreBigKids looks like you removing last bolt in wrong direction (20min.)
Chris Remoc nice work mate:)👍🏼
Absolutely amazing fella , fixing your disco3 in real life with all the problems us diy encounter , better than any how to video I've ever watched , had a disco 3 for 8 years and i felt that pain you went through , every project i done on my disco3 had broken and stuck bolts , have had a sportage now for 3 years but going back to a disco 4 , the Landrover bug never leaves you !
The Sportage looks like a nice car. Thanks for watching, really glad you enjoyed it as a DIY mechanic.
Absolutely brilliant! Laughing all the way through. I have done work on my Landy and you made me realise I should just pay the garage on this one. I am facing the exact same task, thank you for changing my mind! Best!
Brilliant work. This sums up my own experiences of working on cars. You watch a video where the job is done is 17 minutes, so you take it on, only to discover the very first bolt shears and takes you 4 hours to remove. Very enjoyable!
You're right. I think it sums up everybody's experience - but some people aren't as honest.
We are, however, all in the same boat - Land Rovers break and we have to fix them.
So very happy for you! It's for the love of the vehicle and the love of the labor while knowing that you completed a complex task and have accomplishment under your belt. Bravo! Land Rovers are for real men. 💪🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
19 minutes into the video and not only do I have no idea how I got here... I can't turn away
Daria and I both agree that this is the funniest comment so far. We both laughed out loud.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks God I came across this video and I change my mind because today I was just going to buy this car 2006 model
ah the joys of being a DIY'er on a Discovery 3...haha. so many pains and swears, yet also somehow rewarding. labor of love indeed
I take no joy in fixing it. I do enjoy driving it, however.
Thank you for taking the time to record and post this DIY video. Well worth watching and referring back to! Having done this job myself I know just how frustrating it is to complete! I literally sat here for the full 45mins willing you on to complete it! The part about the rust and its heating point was brilliant!!
Thank you for this!
Thanks for willing me on. It certainly helped. Glad you enjoyed it.
You had me in tears with the pile of saw blades. One of the funniest things I have seen in a while.
The saw blades had me in tears too, as I took the money out of my wallet to buy them.
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!
For a gentleman who was turning the bolts the wrong way you did a superb job repairing your vehicle and making your video.
Many thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed the video.
If you’d paid someone to do it you couldn’t have made this awesome video. 👏👏👏👍😁
A-ha! You watched to the end! You win a prize. Take the rest of the day off.
You need a medal for your hard work well done
Well done for continuing to be determined and documenting the frustrations we all experience 👍👍
Glad to hear another honest mechanic, who also has occasional difficulties.
that's what youtube is for, mate ... really every DIY'ler can feel your effort, your strength, your moments of nearly giving up, but then keep going all to the end of it. Next time you will use different tools for speeding up this process, keeping the costs low. Electric grinder with lithium accu got to affordable prices ... keep going (!) and live your joy :-)
Hahahaha, I'm not doing again. Not to this car, anyway.
Thanks for watching!
Quality job. We run into the exact same issues at the independent Land Rover shop I work at, only difference is the tools on hand. It takes us about a day to rip everything apart then a day to put it back together.
Just bought a D3. Now officially terrified by your video. However, it was informative and entertainingly well done...and you got the job completed successfully. My beloved looked over my shoulder to see why I looked so concerned and said 'Well, at least they can be fixed'. And she is right so, thanks for the demo.
You're very welcome. Best damn car that's ever been made. Get used to fixing it, as you'll start to look around for alternatives and realise that everything else is *just a car*. Last of the real off-roaders.
Just done this job and here is an easier solution to cutting bolts.Ditch power tools, pick up a junior hacksaw and 15mins later all done.Slow and steady cuts metal and all for a 10p junior hacksaw blade. Thanks for video gave us a great insight in to doing the job ourselves
Glad you found the video useful.
Thanks for watching.
How universal all of our struggles are on old rusty parts. I don’t even own a Land Rover, yet I found the video to be easily relatable. It reminded me all to well of my own struggles replacing all the suspension on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee. I thought many times I would just cut the car in half and let it rust away in my driveway. However we continue on until the job is complete. Great video. Cheers from America. Job well done.
Thank you America. COuld you ask Ford to start selling their new Bronco over here, please. No more Land Rovers for me. I still have it, but guess what - it's broken.
better than a Hollywood movie been watching this for hours hats off to you mate you have far more patience than me
Yeah, you're right. Hollywood has got a bit formulaic recently. Glad you've watched for hours. Many thanks.
THE most awesomely cool car repair video EVER. I have a Disco 3 in NZ and now I will never work on it. Thanks for the warning . You're willpower is awesome!!!
Many thanks for a positive review. Really glad you enjoyed it.
Man alive I'm only five minutes in and I'm hooked. I don't even have a Discovery. GREAT VID thank you.
Thanks you very much.
Excellent video.
This is the second time I've seen this and it cracks me up .... especially the tightening of the bolt instead of undoing it.😂
Glad you keep on enjoying it. Thanks!
Just seen your video classic mistakes we all make with these bolts appreciated you’re honest approach
Yep, its the mistakes that make it entertaining.
Brilliant video and as a DIY Disco 3 mechanic I laughed out loud on a few occasions. Totally empathise with you - top effort
Glad you enjoyed watching it. I'm happy the stress I went through is entertaining.
I've just swapped the Parking Brake Module on mine. That was even worse.
Thanks for watching
@@WeAreBigKids had many a dealing with the EPB!! From ceasing on to repeated calibrations ha ha.
2 mins into the video and there’s already gold with the brake line block to stop losing fluid. Simple genius.
So grateful we don’t have salted roads in Oz.
The salt here kills all the snakes and spiders.
Every single point in the epic job that stopped you in your tracks over the 8 weeks, start to finish....looked like they were totally forgotten once you were in Scotland. Enjoy the comfort until your next repair job. Well done.
You are right. Thank you.
You absolutely hooked me. I have been there over the years & in those days no 24hr screwfix either. Well done. Regards Nick
Glad you enjoyed the film. Thanks for watching.
what a great video. Good for you sticking with it. I'm a mechanic and had a disco2 for 13 years ,I drive an 06 L322 now so I know the struggles. I was yelling at my screen when you started going the wrong way on that bolt lol. I look forward to more repair vids from you. cheers
I thought I heard something, LOL.
What a brilliant video. I felt your pain with the bolt. When you are under a car everything gets back to front. Reminded me of the ball joints on my D2. Keep up the awesome work. All landrovers need a little love.
But they're worth loving. Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed that and had a giggle when I seen you turn that bolt the wrong way excellent stuff 👍👍
Just been through the same palaver. Your video must have saved me 2 days so thanks!!!
Two days! Good work. You owe me now, hahaha.
Thanks for watching.
Brilliant video and fair play for not giving up
Thanks for watching!
Really great video, not only showing that its basically not worth doing it yourself but also brlliantly documented the whole painful process DOH !!
The hardest part was doing it on axle stands in a shared carpark outside of your neighbour's house. If I had a garage and lift it would be much easier.
Thanks for watching!
You didn't waste that money. You figured out how to do it yourself and you taught the world what to look out for and how to overcome it. Very key ingredients in life. That drive that you took at the end must have tasted so good. Lol
LOL, That's just about how any repair I undertake on my LR3 goes. Enjoyed your video.
Thanks for watching. Glad to hear I'm not the only normal person.
Yes you probably spent more on travelling by train instead of paying a garage to do it but look at the fun you had and the ACHIEVEMENT OF doing it your self well done a good video..been there my self 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I never intended to catch the train to work. The idea was to get the whole job done in one weekend, hahahahaha.
Thanks for watching!
Great job. I know from tackling DIY repairs on cars it takes real determination and effort. Multiple times over. But the feeling you get when all is done and you accomplished what you set out to do. It’s well worth the effort plus you understand more and give you confidence to tackle the next job knowing you got through that one. As for turning the nut the wrong way, I think we all have done it.
I admire the way you posted the video and showed everyone too. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Cheers Simon.
Another honest viewer. Many thanks for watching, we're glad you enjoyed it.
i've watched this twice now and I found it just as amusing the second time..bloody marvellous comedy
You're the best!
You and my brother are alike. Know nothing about car repairs but managed to finish the job in the end. Congratulations 🎊🍾 👍🏻
Well there's one thing I'll say. You never give up easily, a man on a mission. 11 out of 10 mate well done many would have given in, you delivered the goods.
Thanks. You have to deliver the goods when there is no one to deliver them for you.
At 32 mins loving the old English style dancing rhythms we've got going on... looking forward to this job on my disco 3 yaaay
A job well done esp for tackling a Land Rover's suspension... Bravo
Thanks. Before I started the air suspension was a bit of a mystery. Since then I have a much better idea of how it works and the areas it might go wrong. The air bit is not that complicated. It's the rust.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. Excellent quality!!
Many thanks for your kind review. Really glad you enjoyed watching. All the best!
Great to see a real life video showing all the problems one encounters. Not the pre prepared make look easy vids the garages show. Well done fella you’ve saved yourself ££££s.
Good to hear from another honest mechanic that also has the occasional stumbling block.
Thanks for watching!
You know that bit in Jaws were he says "we are going to need a bigger boat" ? Well I learned when working on my Defender that you need a bigger socket set! Love the Disco3 and am very tempted to buy one.
Disco 3's are going for less than £5,000 nowadays, and you've already got your bigger sockets. Go get one! They are really good machines, if you can keep them running.
I would prefer if there was a simpler version, without all the electronic gizmos - central locking, electric wing mirrors, electric seats, electric windows, electric parking brake and all that stuff.
Incredibly satisfying video. It just goes to show what you can do with the right attitude, grim determination, the right tools, inventiveness and the essential good sense of humour. I loved the camera shots, the soundtrack and the editing, all done to perfection. I felt for you when the rain was running down your neck and things just weren't progressing...we've all been there with a Landy :):) Very well done sir.
Really glad to hear you and so many others enjoy watching the entertaining videos we make.
Thank you for watching.
Top video, entertaining right throughout. Got my D3 last July 2008 gs with 130k, decided when i got it i would do as much as i could mechanically myself although ive never worked on cars before (discovery 3 not the best place to start) so had a crack at a full oil and filter service.
All went smoothly until i got to the transfer box and instead of loosening the drain plug i was tightening it stripping the thread on the transfer box. I spent the next 3 full days searching for a way to fix the problem so i could make it to whaddon 4x4 day in my new d3 on the weekend. Was pointed in the direction of thread tapping kits on the facebook owners page, having no experience with anything like that i felt way in over my head but like you in the video had no option but to carry on.
Said thread tapping was a success, and i was off. Wading through everything whaddon could throw at the D3, it was worth every minute of blood sweat and tears of the previous few days - until the end of the day when i got an almighty squeal from the handbrake. A quick look at the back wheels and i realise that the plugs to stop all the crap getting into the shoes where missing, and i now had to pull the emergency release cable to get the handbrake off. Of course when you do that you then have to re latch the cable, as well as getting the shoes off and cleaned/greased - there began my second d3 DIY job which was just as successful... Ups and downs but you cant beat these trucks.
Pick up the tools and get stuck in. Be good to see you take yours offroad (then fix it when you break it)..
Thanks for watching.
I've had my D3 almost five years now and the list of things to fix is growing, despite my best efforts. The idea of taking mine off road just seems like an impossible dream at the moment. My next tool box effort will be finding my electrical problem - Which started as "Rear Parking Sensors Shorted to Ground" and has become tailgate door opens itself, subwoofer shorted, front parking sensors shorted to ground and a slow battery drain.
I have filmed fixing a sagging suspension corner / air leak, but not sure whether to edit that and upload it as there's no humour.
What did I just watch?? What an epic video. 👏👏👏 Such an accurate depiction of the ups and downs of a project. Great work mate!
Thanks for watching! Really glad you enjoyed it.
Must admit, when I saw that the film was 43 minutes long, I thought I'd just skip through, but I watched and enjoyed every moment. Again, all credit to you. Your graphics/animation skills are impressive, too. No doubt you had to edit for bad language? I certainly would have.
You are more patient then me, as I'd have taken a hammer to it. I did spot that you were tightening that bolt, but confess that I've done the same in the past, and I suspect many have if truth be known.
I think a number of key points come out of endeavors such as this ... 1. It is never as easy as it should (or you think it should) be. 2. Rust is a true enemy. 3. Car designers sometimes seem to want to make these jobs as difficult as possible by leaving little room to work in. 4. Rarely do we have all the necessary tools when we first start a job. 5. It nearly always takes longer than anticipated.
Perhaps treat your self to an angle grinder!
Although it can seem like misery when halfway through this type of job, the feeling of achievement at the end is usually worth it. You are an inspiration my friend.
Now, I'm looking forward to seeing you tackle the glow plugs. It's a job that I've been thinking of doing, but I hear they really are a nightmare and typically break.
Carry on the good work.
Thanks for the positive review. As for the glow plugs, I'll leave that to someone who knows better. Meanwhile, I'm about to unleash a new video - Replacing the Electronic Parking Brake. Any minute now....
You are a man after my own heart. My favourite how to vid yet
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
Great stuff - I'm about to tackle the rear arms on my wife's disco 3. I have a defender and the two absolute essential specialist Landrover tools are : Specialist Tool 1 - Lump hammer, Specialist Tool 2 - Blow torch. Angle grinder or reciprocal saw come in close third. :-)
Good luck with the Disco!
Cheers mate for an excellent video record. I felt every high and low!! I'm in the middle of doing all four corners, upper and lower control arms, followed by the steering rack if I want it to go in a straight line as well smoothly, and you (and your good lady) are an inspiration! I think I've been forwarned about a couple of 'snags' I may not have anticipated and I thought I'd covered every fecin thing! NS REAR penetrating oil and heat, fecin lots...and all loose...so far!! Had to smile at the end 'cos you drove past my house in Fort William on your way up to Blarmachfoldach, pronounced Blar mah fol cha to us locals....If you'd like a spell on the Isle of Skye in Uig, let me know, my cottage is available and cheap!!! Be well and thanks, superb.
Good luck finishing your project.
I have just bought a Disco3 and have a feeling that your video will come in useful. I feel your pain. Cheers D
Noooooooooooooooooo. I'm so sorry. Just think what you could have spent all that money on.
Love this video.... a lot can be said for having the right tools but unless you try the job you won't always know what you need... great job....
Thanks for watching. There's a careful economic balance between buying tools or paying someone else to do it. Like lots of people, if I can do it without buying more tools I will. Also, it's more entertaining without, lol.Glad you liked the video.
Simon, that video is an absolute scream. Very entertaining indeed. I had my Diesel Discovery 3 for 3 months. I have replaced one air suspension strut and without the right tools. What a job. Nothing compared to your 5 weekend debacle. But difficult to say the least. At the moment it has a coolant leak in the EGR coolers which at first I thought was a water pump- then a head gasket. Thankfully I figured it out before I attempted to pull the heads off. 😂 The new water pump has gotta be a good thing right. I will be deleting the EGR valves etc on Monday (when the parts arrive). Then I will bypass the EGR coolers and run a hose directly to the heater core from the crossover pipe outlet that feeds the coolers. I hope it works out well. I broke down on holidays and am 650kms from home. 🤦🏻 looking forward to watching your other videos.
Man this video is so well done. I feel like I’m watching an episode of car restoration UK on tv
Thank you very much.
This is great film making with excellent content and most entertaining! Award winning!!
"I'd like to thank...."
We Are Big Kids
and your excellent leading lady has got it just right!
What a awesome video! I can relate. Well done!
Once you've finished your fuel filter you can start on your suspension.
Thanks for watching this as well.
Great video, I felt your pain, i'm a Landrover Nut and been there and got the tee shirt, skinned knuckles and broken tools, I would seriously urge you get a 5" angle grinder though and plenty of cutting discs! again great vid and your editing is brill, even the music seems right, keep up the good work bud.
Thanks for your positives words of encouragement. There are many tools I'd like to buy, but I'd rather not have to, if that makes sense?
Fair play too you mate ..wish I was closer to assist & help with power tools .I do all my own d.I.Y work on my 2006 RR sport and love every second of it ..however the wife doesn't ...
Loved every 2nd of your video and the will power you had too show it who was boss .
If you were closer I'd probably just let you do it all. I'm not keen on fixing my cars, but needs must. The thing about starting a job like this is, you can't take it anywhere until you've fixed it. And I'd imagine no mechanic wants to take over a half finished job.
wow, that was a painful job, thanks for persevering and thanks for sharing
Luckily there is no part of the brain that stores pain. Thanks for watching, I hope you found it useful and entertaining.
Many thanks for your well documented endeavours. I have definitely learned what not to do! All jokes aside though, well done!
The biggest lesson is - do not buy a Land Rover.
@@WeAreBigKids right, first mistake made then;)
Kudos to you! So impressed with your determination and resourcefulness!
Once you start there's no "CTRL + Z"
Thanks for watching.
I take my hat off to you fella.....WELL DONE!!!!!
Why thank you very much. Hope you found it useful, if not entertaining.
Was screaming at the video when breaking tools on the last bolt...YOU ARE TIGHTENING IT!! 😂 All the way through there would have been beep after beep when I'm doing it 🤣
I learnt a lot of valuable lessons doing this. Thanks for watching!
your disco is quite a good dancer! thanks for the helpfull upload
Yes, it dances much, much better now. Glad you enjoyed it.
Goodness me!!!!!!!! Brilliant job!!! Very very impressed!! Thank you very much for sharing!!
Thank you very much for watching!
Great video with everything in it. Entertainment value, 9 out of 10. Completely reminds me of everything not easily fixed.
Glad I'm not the only one who's struggled under a car. Thanks for watching!
This video was so helpful. Brilliantly presented and edited. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
You are very welcome. I hope you learnt not to do the job and instead just get rid of the Discovery 3 for something made in Japan?
This is a fantastic advert for your local garage...
Agreed. I used them to replace my front diff and decided to never go back to them again. Nearest proper Land Rover mechanic is 80 miles away now.
Why? Why do i find this gem of youtube soooo late? This was fantastic and one of the most entertaining car vids I've ever seen. Thank you, good Sir, for bringing joy to this evening of mine! Greetings from Austria!
You're not late, the party's just getting going. Come on in and have some fun.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent effort, excellent video. Thank you
Amazing video, really well done for the perseverance displayed. Using this as inspiration I’ve decided that for my 2006 Discovery I’ll book it into a reputable Indy to get this done. If I tried this it would be on the back of a low loader long before being finished.
Hahahahaha. Glad to be of service. Hope the indy treat it nicely - and your wallet.
Thank you! You are an inspiration. I just bought an 05 and see I too will follow in your pain.... but I love the work! Happy trails from the Lobster Coast of Canada!
Enjoy your Disco. They are brilliant, aren't they? Worth all the pain.
The Lobster Coast of Canada sounds dramatic and cinematic.
From the Beautiful Bit of Wales.
Nice to see you up in fort William where I’m from good job.
This is the best produced video I've seen and it’s for a car!!!!
You are too kind. Thanks for watching.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH...You have no idea how much you help me !!!
Glad to be of service. I hope yours didn't take weeks and weeks and weeks.
I don't know yet..I will let you know, again thank you very much !!
Outstanding! Probably what I look like as I spend my weekends "fixing" my LR3 and old Saabs.
I'd like to remind you that Land Rovers cannot be fixed.
@@WeAreBigKids To true! Why don't they make televisions in England? They have yet to figure out how to make them leak oil!
If the CEL is not illuminated in a Land Rover, the fuse must have blown.
lol. The TV's on/off button will be activated by another electronic on/off actuator.
Great video. Effort pays in the long run.
It certainly does, thanks for watching it until the end.
10 out of 10 for effort ! and you are a much wiser man now ! Well Done !! :-)
Thanks for your review and thanks for watching.
@@WeAreBigKids most informative film I've watched for ages. A great assist for someone who wanted to tackle the same job ! 😊
Great video again , really helpful to all us Disco owners .
Top tip ... Use a carbide tipped reciprocating saw blade 6" , e.g. Diablo or Lenox . It's what Firemen use to cut people out of crashed cars . You can cut a bolt in no time , also it will cut through the wishbone ( if you need to ) like a machete through Philadelphia cheese . Look at the vids on UA-cam about Diablo or Lenox Carbide tipped Reciprocating saw blades. You don't need an expensive saw either. I'm going to do my front wishbones, so i'll video cutting the bolts with a Lenox blade and see if they are as good as they make out .
I did see the video for the Diablo blades before I started. Unfortunately I couldn't find anywhere that sells them in the U.K. I had to go with the chocolate-dipped ones instead. I think it made for a funnier video, mind, so worth every penny.
@@WeAreBigKids your right there ha ha , it was funny watching the pile of blades get bigger , but not funny watching you break your tools , trying the loosen that bolt the wrong way , we've all done it .
I just ordered a Lenox blade for my saw, supposed to be as good or better than Diablo , it was about £10 on ebay from a place in the Midlands. Hopefully i won't need it , but that's just wishful thinking. Thanks again Graeme
The wife template is the, same everywhere.
"Don't relax too much, you have to fix it tommorow'.
Just like my precious 😅
😁
Oh man I feel your pain !!! been there -done that !!.. well done and even more on doing the other side... you carn't beat land rovers..!
Many thanks for watching.
Jesus I really felt for you fella. All this running around over 4 weekends. If ever you need any help just message me.
It would be a pleasure, I’m very near Swansea, 4 miles. I got a disco 3 too, absolutely love it to bits.
They're great cars, aren't they? And no other car fills its shoes. I'll keep you mind when my next endeavour looks like it's coming off the rails. There's no shortage of things on my Disco that need fixing. Just got to find the time in between all my running around. Thanks for watching! Hope you were suitable entertained.
Who did you use for the wheel alignment? Going to do my suspension arms, so will need it doing when finished. I can see this was 4 years ago when we last spoke. Have you still got the Disco?
Fantastic effort and editing, (not one swear word on air). Made me giggle, and I felt your pain, 4 hours standing up on the train from London to Swansea, just not on!
“So I’m 200 miles away from the problem, and I’ve been thinking” can I get that on a t-shirt. Keep the videos coming, I’m thinking of replacing my D2 for a 3 and every little helps.
Good man!
Glad you enjoyed the film. If we get enough subscribers to be eligible for monetisation then perhaps then we'll look into making t-shirts, lol.
Now's a good time to buy a D3. They're at an all time low right now, at about £5,000. Some are saying they'll go up in value again.
Thanks for watching!
you really need to invest in high impact sockets, grinder, decent battery gun. you would have saved yourself a LOT of time here, good effort for not giving up!
No more tools, I'm saving up for another Toyota.
Great video I love your never give up attitude & determination, well done sir.
Thanks for the kind comments. If I would have failed the car fix I would have failed the video too.
Holly sh!t, man. You are tenacious!
mate, I just came across this browsing for disco vids cause, of course, I own one myself. though I leave those nasty jobs to the garage, knowing how they go, this, my friend, it THE BEST diy mechanics (or sidewalk mechanics how we call it over here in germany) video by far. if not in the world. thank you so much for sharing your pain!
This is the best comment ever. Many thanks. I do like the term "Sidewalk Mechanics", I've never heard it before.
I just started this project yesterday on my 2005 LR3. And the thing that made me say the first swears "who the fuck decides on NOT putting a fucking 18mm wrench in these shit sets!?!?"
Also, great visual on the temp points on metal, rust, etc. All stuff you know but never seen visualized before. Really cool.
Love your video. You should have a TV show. No doubt!
Yeah, that temperature diagram took some research. No one on the internet would own up to actually knowing why heating it up works. Took some research.
Thanks for watching!
You did a great job on that video, I have an 2007 LR3 with close to 400K miles on it and I cant kill the beast! But I did have both the front and the rear control arms changed out but I decided to buy the parts and had the local mechanic do the grunt work, I also had them change out the steering rack and main steering shaft that has a linkage that started to freeze up! I watched your video to the end and I enjoyed every bit of it, my truck is driving great again I hope yours is going the same.
Thanks for watching. I too have a truck that drives great, but it has certainly cost me a small fortune keeping it that way.
There's a local LR3 I want to buy with 199k miles on it for 3k - now you're making me consider to actually pull the trigger
It’s so entertaining can’t stop watching! Seems you have a lot of fun witch Disco 😊
Hopefully there’s more coming up 👍
I certainly have fun driving it. Can't say it's fun lying on soaking wet gravel underneath it, though.
More in the pipeline....
Thanks!
Husband is a LR tech, when he did ours he heats them up n uses a air hammer to remove the bolts or cuts them off with a cut off saw. The reason the last bolt wouldn't remove the first time you attempted it is very simple, you were tightening it up not undoing the bolt haha.
oh no way!!! lol. this job looks like a right mission to do.
+nick h. It's easier when you know what to expect and have the correct tools. Tools. It's always about tools.
+Karina Fletcher. I envision an Air Hammer is similar to an Air Guitar, no?
Lol No I use big nasty air hammer from IR lol.
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 I laughed my head off the whole time, he destroyed spanners, etc on one bolt bt turning it the wrong side bt I learnt from him alot, I own a defender 300tdi bt would wish to get these models too, it's actually been very informative to me Particularly.
Very entertaining! But all the time, money and effort wasted should’ve been someone else’s problem to fix(shop). But then again, none of us would have been able to be this entertained and have learned so much at your expense and pain. So all of us LR owners say Thank You! Well done sir! This is true LR Love at its best!
I ended up doing this job myself because the local garages just can't be trusted. Had a real nightmare with a few different ones and I won't take my business to them anymore. I thought to myself, "I'm not going to do it any worse than that last mechanic I took it to."
I had fun doing it and learnt a lot about rust. It also made a nice subject for my UA-cam channel and is by far my most popular video to date.
I'm glad people like yourself are enjoying it. Watch this space, as there are more in the works.
Many thanks for watching!
We Are Big Kids You had me hooked man! I watched more of your content and its great! You and your lady make a great team! Yes, I agree with you regarding Indy shops.. Keep up the good work as all of us LR guys greatly appreciate it. 👍👍👍👍
What a great video keep them coming
Although you made mistakes your not a mechanic but done a great job, and glad to see you had it aligned properly at the end, there’s a lot of garages that don’t do that!
Thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
Just amazing all the work you did replacing all parts, but even more your will and how much determined you were to finsih the job. I do lots of things on my Disco4 myself but ... having watched you... not sure i want to go through just even the risk of being in the same situation hahaha this short of videos show much more than just how things are done, they also show how bad they can get if things don't roll your way.
THANKS THANKS THANKS and congratulations!!!!
Gonzo
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm no expert mechanic but I have a good understanding of what jobs I can do myself and what jobs need to go to a mechanic. Getting stuck is the DIY way. And it's much more entertaining too. But once you get stuck, you must get through it and finish the job, no matter what. And remember this - It's better to get stuck taking bits off than get stuck fitting the new parts. If you can't fit the new parts you really are in trouble.
All the best. Simon.
FULLY AGREE. Many thanks for sharing!!!! All the best
Just watched this from start to finish. Absolutely loved watching it! As a Disco 4 owner, I can entirely relate to all the comedy issues you brought up. Epic video - Keep up the good work!
Good to hear you thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Fantastic video, great work! Very entertaining watch!
Thanks for the kind words. Really glad this video is going down well.
Well done for tackling the suspension and for producing such a great video. As I was watching im thinking you need a blow torch to heat those bolts, then it shows you with a blow torch, then I'm thinking you are tightening those bolts not loosening them, then you realise the tightie tights lefty loosie.
Good work
It's all part of the drama....
@@WeAreBigKids tell me about it, weve had a new edition to play with, a Freelander 2
This is fantastic man. Well done.
Thanks for watching.
