    What happened when the dreaded Park Brake Fault error message appeared on the dashboard and how I replaced my broken PARKING BRAKE MODULE on a Land Rover Discovery 3, LR3. Made for your entertainment, rather than your education.

      Yeah, don't buy one. These cars are amazing when they work, so there's no reason to ever sell it on other than you've gotten sick of fixing it. If there's a second hand one for sale I can guarantee there's a problem with it somewhere. I still have mine and it is a constant source of problems. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. I hoping to trade it in for the new VW ID.7 when it comes available.

    • @WeAreBigKids

      Yep, mine would calibrate and adjust no more. It was an electrical fault in this instance. It's always electrical on these things.

    Wow awesome job yet again! You're very brave tackling that!! What a painful repair that is. I'd definitely take mine to the garage if mine ever needs doing. I always look forward to your new uploads, very entertaining and informative. I hope it doesn't need anything doing for a long time now. I love your vids mate! Great how you used the Landrover “bong” to hide your expletives! 😂😂😂
    I can’t help thinking that you maybe didn’t have to replace the actuator as the problem usually lies with the brake shoes themselves. I wouldn’t mind giving you my number if you ever need advice! I know mine inside out! Take care brother!

    • @WeAreBigKids
      @WeAreBigKids  5 років тому

      The Land Rover "Bongs" ARE swear words in my house. The fault codes revealed an electrical fault with the module, which went away with the new one. What's wrong with a simple lever and cable, any way? I find it's always the electronics that are breaking on mine. It hates water, too. Sets off all sorts of errors.

    • @ruaidhriobriain
      @ruaidhriobriain 5 років тому

      MrThommo78 yeah, anytime mine had handbrake issues I adjusted the brakes and / or replaced the rear rotors ( brake discs) and fitted new shoes.
      Thanks for putting up the video, all these videos help us all and are great for giving us an insight before we tackle a job ourselves.

    Glad it worked out! Can't imagine going through all that and still getting an error code! I've run a diagnostic with the IID tool, lots of communication faults listed but only one C fault.... Parking brake (C1A55-64). Dare I make the investment of time and torture!?

  • @denkha9468

    After fitting the parking brake module did you have to program the module for it to work on the vehicle

    • @WeAreBigKids

      I don't think I did. I just plugged in my IID Tool and deleted the error codes, as far as I can remember. I filmed this last year, so my memory is a little hazy on it all now.

    Just as an fyi - a simple way to avoid this issue is by NOT using the parking brake other than a couple of times a month.
    The ring gear / flywheel on these TDV6’s is massive and perfectly capable of holding the vehicle solid indefinitely even on steep inclines.

    Another great video, the more annoying thing is if you look on the back of the transfer box there are 4 bolt holes for a conventional transmission brake, that's the easy bit, what I haven't worked out is how to mount a brake lever in the cab, and keep the electronics happy, because it uses cable tension monitoring I think, that handbrake is deep buried in the cars electronic systems and won't be removed without loads of system modifications but cleverer people know how I'm sure. Thanks for sharing your painful experience, helping others is the best!

I didn't even bother try removing the hand brake cable clips the bolts were so corroded and rounded , i just easily broke the rusty clips by wiggling them instead . I put the new one on in no time .
    Goggles are a necessity for this job , my car will be so much faster and more economical now , as so much rust fell off when i was using an air chisel on one of the bolts lol .

But my partner kept bringing the camera out and telling me that I must do it. I didn't bother using my radio mics for the Parking Brake video. Also it took far too long in my spare time to edit it. I work as an broadcast editor for my day job, so not a fan of editing when I get home.

Also, my parking brake module died at the beginning of last year. Mmmm! I’m thinking of upgrading to D3 or D4 from a P38. Here in Australia we don’t have the rust problems that you have and the oil leaks keep everything nicely lubricated.😀😀

    • @WeAreBigKids
      @WeAreBigKids  4 роки тому +2

      The days of Land Rover oil leaks are long gone. I used to have a Series 3 Military Lightweight, and that would leave oils spots everywhere I parked, hahahahaha. Nowadays all the problems seem to be related to the electrics and computers. And EVERYTHING is now electric - Parking brakes, do they REALLY need to be electric?!
      As for D3 or D4, there's not a lot in it. There are some problems with the D4 that the D3 doesn't have, mainly the engine's crank snapping on the 3.0l D4 engine.
      I prefer the interior of the D3, that's why I didn't upgrade to the D4 when it came out. The 3.0l D4 has no gear stick, the cup holders are in the wrong place and generally all the controls are in the wrong place in the D4. I hated it. I decided to wait for the D5 and when that came out I was not at all interested in it, because, well, you've seen the D5, right? Ugly.

      I have the Gap Diagnostic IID Tool. There's a Pro, which costs £1,500 ish and is for reading and changing on multiple VINs. Mine is the standard Bluetooth IID Tool which costs £400 and gets locked to the VIN of your car. It's the go-to IID on the Discovery 3 & 4 Owners group. It is expensive, but it will save you that money back in around 6 months, depending on how many faults you get.

    I reckon your Disco 3 and mine must be twins. Last year my EPB stopped engaging, so I contacted my local LR independent and was shocked at the quote for parts and labour. I looked on eBay and found a module for about £400 cheaper and sent off for it, with the aim of giving it to the specialist to fit. When it came to it, it turned out that it was not the EPB module that had failed, the issue was with the brakes themselves. Watching you tackle this made me glad that I didn't attempt it, especially as I'd have only found later that the issue was not what was expected.
    All credit to you again for having a go. Your films have spurred me to tackle more. Last week I did the oil, oil filter and air filter (all of which I filmed), and earlier today I was underneath looking at the fuel filter and giving the fasteners a hit of penetrating fluid ready for the weekend. Please keep posting your endeavours.

      Hi Razor, My EPB stopped engaging one month ago. So I pull the security cable to release the car. when i try to engage the EPB again, i can only hear the wired sound like the gear or the cable is stuck in the module. After reading your comment, i am wondering maybe mine is the same problem with the brakes, cause the brakes are due recently. Any ideas about why the issue was with brakes themselves? your help will be really appreciated.

    • @OffMyCloud
      @OffMyCloud 5 років тому

      @@shawnxiao6950 Hi Shawn, My EPB wouldn't engage at all. It wasn't stuck on, so I didn't need to pull the release cable. At the same time, I was getting drag from the rear brakes on pulling away. I thought the fault was with the EPB module, but on further investigation it was found that the park brake shoes on one side had delaminated and on the other side the shoes were worn low and the discs are heavily worn/corroded. It was this that stopped the EPB from working. I hope that helps. Either way, an expensive job I'm afraid.

    I bought an LR3 for my daughter to go to Texas A&M last year and it had $2,450 worth of problems so far which the mechanic fixed. If she tells me that the LR3 has a parking brake fault we'll sell it right away and most likely I'll get her another Land Rover. Are we dumb or what, but love overlooks many faults. By the way, didn't anybody tell you that you look like Rick Wakeman.

      I once read that car manufacturers say that it's no longer financially viable to continue to fix a car after 10 years, or 80,000 miles, whatever comes first. My LR3 is now 14 years old, has 180,000 miles and, in my own opinion, is no longer financially viable to continue to fix it it. However, no more Land Rovers for me for the foreseeable future. Once this one is gone I'm not buying another British car. I shall be taking a Journey to the Centre of the Earth to find something a lot more reliable.

    Having a Land Rover Range Rover er sport I love it and hate it at the same time , it’s good nice shape and look but it’s the worst car on the planet they way it’s designed , if turbo goes bad it’s body removal job £4-£5k , there are many little things if go wrong it’s body off job you eventually paying far less price on parts then labour , there is nothing in this car you can replace it easily like bmw or Audi or Mercedes etc.,,,, very very costly when comes to repair and get rusted so bad , nuts bolts quality is very cheap they get slipped or rounded or snapped and this is what I have personally experienced

    Awesome video.. I appreciate it was a while ago but have to say. If you would have attacked it from the front side of the offside rear wheel the module can be taken out without removing the bracket.. Just need to undo the top two bolts holding it to the bracket. Then it all slides out through the wheel well. Then you will have had to get it programmed because it runs on the canbus system. Goodjob it wasnt a wiring loom fault which is common on these.. Landrovers had a recal early on and had the loom replaced as so many were failing.. Good job though. Hope its still working a year later...
