Building a Cedar Blanket Chest MM 137

  • I was actually working on another project when my friend contacted me about building a Blanket Chest. I told her I didn't know what a blanket chest was, and asked for a picture. Meanwhile, I looked the subject up myself, and by the time I had her input, I was already excited.
The design I came up with is built with cedar boards, glued into panels with biscuits; includes splayed angle legs, box joints, and a past vertical trapdoor top. The top is reinforced with oak braces, and includes both heavy duty hinges and a front latch. The project is finished on the outside with a stain poly mix selected because it was exactly the right color. No finish on the inside, except a little cedar oil, which is sold to restore the smell of cedar in chests.

Very nice. Something else cedar oil is useful for especially if you live in a warm, moist climate where bugs get in the kitchen, spray some in your kitchen cabinets and say goodbye to kitchen critters.. They really don't like cedar smell..

    Beautiful project!
One of the things I found most useful was the oak blocks for the hinges.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and best wishes!

Probably been awhile since you did this video, but just had to say that I love it and am building it. Thank you Memphis!

Thank you for the great video on the blanket chest, it came out great and the best part that I enjoyed was the box joint jig that's fantastic! I will be trying to make a blanket chest like yours!!

Good video-I just finished a blanket chest the other day myself though mine’s a little different than yours. I really like your hidden hinge idea. I was born and raised in Memphis myself but now I live in Arkansas.

I always hand sand after orbital . It erases whirls and I have found there is no replacement for the hand sanded forming of the chest angles and edges . Your chest turned out very nice sir.

You say it turned out OK. I say it turned out very beautiful. I am sure she will be proud to own it. Nice to see you wearing a mask while cutting. Your liver will thank you. I got myself in trouble by breathing the wrong stuff. Not fun.
Of course you and I grew up in a time when you were considered a wimp for taking safety precautions. We use to all be bulletproof. Now we are old and wiser. Very nice video.

I know, in one place I say it is okay, and in another I say "I'm real satisfied." I need a script, as I'm a much better writer than I am a speaker. I'm glad they didn't have video back when I was coming up, as I would have had a complex.
I'm way allergic to wood dust I think. You can hear it in my voice, especially toward the end of a project. Sometimes I get a couple of weeks ahead just to let my lungs rest. I've upgraded to the best dust collection systems I can find, but the first whiff of dust and I sound like I have emphysema.
Yep, when I think of some of the factories I worked in as a kid it's a wonder I can still breath at all. And as far as being ten foot tall and bulletproof, I proved that wasn't true three years ago when I got my left hand caught in my table saw!! "We are old and wiser," is a perfect comment.
Thanks for the kind words, as always, and hope to see you next week.

I have always loved these cedar chests. They are simple but so very beautiful. You have reason to be proud of your box joints because of the precision you maintain with this big of a piece. They do make for an attractive and strong joint. In typical Memphis fashion, you managed to build this heavy duty with all the braces yet keep them hidden behind dressy splayed angle legs. I bet those legs ended up being a pain to cut out since you had to follow along with the angles already in place. Very nice finished outcome. I am sure that your friend was thrilled with this. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Have a great week.

Cutting the legs out of the angles is a pain, but doing it in advance is worse. I have to fiddle with the angle cuts so much that getting the cutouts perfect is too hard.
My reply feature is not working right. I can only see the line I'm typing, so in my ethanol weakened state I can't remember what I typed; I can't edit anything.
The war department wants me to make her one, but she doesn't like the oak bracing on the lid. I can probably figure that out, but now I need to come up with a new design, so as not to be repetitive.
Yep, I was going to skip the box joint part of the build, since with did them last week, but then I realized the vast difference in the two builds. Luckily, Cedar is very flexible wood, which let me force a few that by rights shouldn't have worked. You never miss anything!! Did you also notice that those braces on the splayed legs were also cut at "splayed angles?" I'll cover that someday, but there always seems like so much to cover. And it doesn't help that I tend to drone on and on about the most obscure details, while skipping over important things. I need a "director," and when we hit it big we will hire one.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I'll take a round-turn on the reply button problem, as it's driving me sober.

So what you are telling me about those legs is that there was hours of work to get those beautiful angles just right that we didn't get to see. If it were me, I would have a whole pile of uhohs in the corner.
Remember, I had a similar problem with UA-cam reply. What I ended up doing was going to the video to reply. It was cumbersome, but much better than only being able to see a bit at a time. Often, I would get almost to the end of the reply and I would hit the wrong key (probably in an ethanol weakened state) and the entire message would be wiped out. Try going to the video and see if that solves your problem.
Maybe there is a way that you could make the bracing decorative. Could you router out dadoes big enough to put some metal strips inside for strength then cover them with a sheet of thin cedar plywood? Don't beat me up. I know nothing about woodworking and my suggestion is probably not even feasible. Either way, I look forward to seeing the design of the War Department's blanket chest.
I noticed the splayed angles on the bracing. In fact, I was watching closely to make sure that you put glue on the right sides. That was a pretty smart touch. I think you have covered a similar setup for splayed angles as the braces. Instead of covering it again in the video, you could direct folks to go watch the other video in your description or even in the comment section.
Good luck with your reply problem. I tried everything I could think of for a few months until one day, POOF it was magically fixed when I logged on. Weird isn't it?!

I like the way you used the box joints, angled legs, and cedar instead of pine. The chest has a nice antique look to it, unlike something that was recently made. It seems like just a short time ago you were on episode 100 and here we are on episode 137. Time sure does fly...

I know, in a few months we will be finishing year three!!!
The cedar is nice, as it gives it that nice cedar smell, and the angled legs give it a more finished look, I think.

The war department wants one too, but she didn't like the oak braces on the lid. I will need to figure that out, as that expanse of solid wood won't stay stable without some bracing.
      My reply feature isn't working.

One of the features I like are the oak braces on the underside of the lid, not just for function but because I think the braces add to the overall antique look. As for the YT reply feature, mine is working but not correctly. You know how it is when YT makes "improvements" -- which they always seem to do once they have all the bugs worked out from the previous "improvements". It's an endless cycle...

Strange, now my reply feature is working!!! All I know is that UA-cam publishes and stores my videos for free!!! Heck, every month or so they even deposit $85 in my bank account. Really!!!! I just got an email saying they deposited actual money in my bank account!!!!
Thanks for the comment and the view. Hope to see you forever.
