This scene is so poetic, showing someone both mentally and physically pulling themself together. No dialogue is needed which made this scene so powerful and all the more beautiful.
The ability to describe a whole character, his desire, motivation, struggles and temper in just one scene, in 3 minutes, using 0 words, is what makes you a good director. This is what cinema is, love it.
The desire, motivation, strugles and temper has nothing to do with CG. In real life it can be even more heartbreaking, situations like the daughter of sandman.
My favorite element of this is that you can tell just how exhausting it is to even be a basic human shape, how taxing it is to literally will himself back from obliteration. But when he sees his daughter's picture, he can turn himself into a force of nature through sheer willpower. Brilliant.
@@haja. pretty sure they just couldn't have him on set, hence his sandy form. it would've been more convenient for him to not hold his human form while fighting. always assumed his body just maintains it... but it was unarguably hard the first time he transformed
And the music just elevates the storytelling of Flint in this scene: From a grieving and sympathetic piano, telling his caring and loving motivation of being a father, to blaring horns that reminds us that he is a father that will do ANYTHING to save his daughter, even if he's considered a threat to the city.
I watched this movie with my Dad and when this scene came in, he said: "That's just a Man trying to keep it together" I didn't put much thought on this words when he said them back then. I was fascinated by how amazing this scene was and watching it again now just hits different.

Its scenes like this mixed with the music that makes me think: what if in a alternative universe, sandman is instead a hero? I sure would love to hear this complete heroic sounding version of his theme.
This beautiful scene is one of the reasons I still remember this movie for. This movie is also shows that a good movie can survive a bad soundtrack, but even the best of soundtracks cannot save a movie.
You won’t find scenes this artistically gorgeous and poetic in modern superhero films. Scenes like this one are why I hold the Raimi trilogy so close to my heart

@@lexc1560The same goes for the Batman(2022). Matt Reeves said that if he didn’t get full creative control he would leave the film. I mean this film was also massively meddled with by producers. Raimi basically left superhero stuff afterwards because he was forced to include Venom, which is why in this movie Venom is so terribly handled
You can tell Raimi didn’t want Venom in the movie. Venom and the symbiote story changes the movies tone a lot and this scene very much shows you that Raimi wanted the focus to be on the Sandman
The Symbiote alone could have worked. They could have had it that Spiderman gets rid of it right before the last fight and then the last scene of the movie Brock gets it, setting up the next movie.
@@RequiemPoete that is true but Sony wanted venom in Spider-Man 3 so if Raimi pitched that idea to Sony they wouldn’t allow it cause they wanted Spider-Mans top 3 big villains to start the trilogy that would lead to more installments and while Sandman is memorable he’s not as popular as those three
@RequiemPoete I had this exact same thought. Venom is a character that deserves a full film as the proper antagonist. I also like the idea of getting a full movie where Peter wears the black suit, without having to get rid of it before the final act. Hell, taking the suit off could’ve BEEN the final act. I can’t help but think of the possibilities there could’ve been had the studio not pushed for Venom so early, or at all. I know Raimi doesn’t like the character, but I think he still could’ve done a magnificent job with him if he had the proper time to do so.
It’s crazy how sandman isn’t even a BAD guy. He’s just a guy who had a criminal record (for obvious reasons) and is trying to do whatever it takes to save his daughter. Older me really has a different perspective on him
2:03 This scene fucked me up emotionally as a kid for reasons I don’t know how to explain. This expression, and this specific scene alone deserves an Oscar. The way they animated Sandman’s facial expressions was so hauntingly poignant, gut wrenching yet amazingly executed. He doesn’t say a word but the audience understands he’s just a broken father who genuinely loves his daughter, and not the typical villain. You feel instant sympathy for his character. I saw this scene over ten years ago in the cinema as a kid and ten years later this specific scene still stuck with me.
Same here. I remembered bits and pieces as a kid of the movie, but this scene always stuck with me. I would just cry and not completely understand why. After watching the movie over several more times I still tear up..
this scene did not F me up emotionally, but it did stick with me. Favorite scene of the trilogy and maybe in all of cinema, I remember this being the first movie scene to legit give me chills.
This is the most oddly beautiful and heart breaking scene in any (if not all) marvel movies. Just seeing the guy trying to form himself and falling apart and watching him try to grab that locket just.. damn.. brings tears to my eyes everytime..
Nitro rock zemfertron makes you wonder what could the movie had been if Sandman was just the villain. I would have loved to see Peters conflicting emotions through the movie finding out the Flint was the real killer. If could go back and time to make a movie turn out amazing in its production, it would be this movie.
Fun fact: the reason the movie released in 2007 instead of 2006 is because the VFX crew needed an additional year to develop the cgi for Sandman and make it look real. So much love went into the trilogy its a shame Sony had to ruin this film.

Really enjoy how they showed every reaction without a single word. Just using the music and expressions to illustrate how Flint changed and realized that wasn't what was important to him.
I don't care what anyone says, this is definitely one of the best villain introductions ever! I remember when I first watched this film in theaters this scene got a thunderous applause.
This scene really shows he’s not a villain he’s a broken man having gone through trauma. Sure he’s Peters nemesis but the moment with the locket reminds us there’s good in him
1:48 this scene really had me invested as a kid, though no words were spoken, sandmans actions and physical expressions spoke louder and seeing his hand disperse after trying to grab the locket of his daughter, and the determination he had to keep going all for her was just beautiful. And not to mention the inspiring score from determination and effort to make things right by his daughter, but the impending destructive power of his newly founded abilities.
Sandman, physically, looked up to God. He was confused, but he shut up and listened for the answer. He tuned into God... and he was shown the answer!! Sadly, the man took his blessing, thought himself the victor, and became self-righteous. He could've just stood up... and gotten a job - or, at least, not hurt others.

Besides, when he’s robbing the van you see the security and everyone are all fine, trapped but still, and Flint made sure he left the top of their noses out to breath, might have hurt them but hey better than killing them.
This scene is extremely powerful to me. A man broken into a million pieces trying to dig himself out of the literal and metaphorical whole he put himself in. Maybe I think to much but sheeesh.
Whenever I watched this movie as a kid, Sandman was the first villain I had ever seen that you actually felt for. He was very human and was played so well dude.
This "scene" would be an award-winning short film... I love how the first 2 minutes are an unbroken take, with the first cut being a shot of Sandman and the locket of the picture of his daughter 1:47
imagine how great the story for sandman could’ve been had it just focused on him and complications with harry now i can understand why they had a third villain and maybe it was to maintain sandman’s innocence in a sense because thats what made him so good in this film he is probably the most justifiable villain in any superhero movie ever made and it would’ve been hard to maintain that feeling in the film without a third villain but if they could’ve pull that off oh man Spiderman 3 had dark knight potential
If this were made today it would probably include an inner monologue of him saying: "Oh man, I really need to concentrate in order to pick up that locket."
It’s like a baby’s will and determination to adapt to their environment. Flint got so angry that he couldn’t pick up his locket so he adapted and grew solid limbs to gently pick it back up. That’s what it means by Flint Marko’s Rebirth. Beautiful scene.
I absolutely love this scene and everything about it. Not the best actor, but the villain they created in this movie was 10/10 fantastic. The music, the effects, the believability, it’s all perfect.
@@eyebrawlfan5201 It made the movie even better. But people like you don't have faith in your own opinions. You are speaking the language of critics of that time. You don't have your opinion
They should have put more focus on him with spider man still with the venom suit. I personally think it would have been a nice set up for Spider-Man 4 with him ditching the suit and end credits showing it attaching to Eddie while he was praying. I think Spider-Man 3 was rushed with the venom part but the sandman parts were expertly made. Or at least good in this movie as he was the original main focus
Most people agree that he was the highlight. It's really unfortunate that he wasn't the focus, there was plenty of potential to explore him for this movie on its own, but venom being included really mucks everything up.
Okay, what I noticed is that many people love the everlasting SHIT out of Alfred as Doc Ock, and rightfully so. Thomas Haden Church, though, as Flint Marko/Sandman is quite underrated, his character is extremely well done, and as a whole, his performance is something that really, REALLY gets you emotional. I dunno, I think both he and Alfred Molina deserve praise, they're both amazing, so somewhat like that.
I think Thomas gets overshadowed a little by all the other things going on in the movie which is very unfortunate. The movie could’ve been amazing if Venom wasn’t in it if it just focused on him
Becuz Alfred and Willem were Solo villains of SM 1& 2 . While Sandman had to share screen time with Venom. It doesn't matter People Love Sandman though . People hate Goblin for being Evil but People are sympathetic towards Sandman .

@TheTrueGamer66 You're right. The actual uncut version of Spider-Man 3 has a lenght of 3 hours, but because of Sony, the movie was rushed and we will never see those deleted scenes. Some of them were even filmed and just needed post-production.
I saw this in the theatre back in the day, I loved the movie when I first saw it and this scene was one of the reasons why I enjoyed it was just blown away by the emotion, the music and the great cgi effects
The sign of an excellent villain is one that you can sympathize with and fully understand where they come from and even perhaps agree with the points they might make, and see that they do what they are doing because in their eyes it's the right thing to do even if many do not agree with them. It's good complexity.

It was so hard for me to conceptualize myself as a being, responding to people, and when I was fully formed I was different. But my loves and passions are the same. This is a beautiful scene and I've remembered it despite my bad memory loss since my head injury. It hits different now c:
The way such intense emotion is expressed on a cgi face of SAND. SAND FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. This scene is perfect. The music, the absence of dialogue, the way we see sandman’s burn of sadness and irreparable change. Raimi is a genius.
He was ready to give up, to let himself fall all to pieces…until he saw her face. He was ready to lose himself, until he saw what he had left to fight for. Thus it is said: when we are falling apart, remembering what we have to fight for can give us the strength to pull ourselves back together and stand once more on our own two feet.
You’re surprised that one of the most Un-ironically good scenes in a super hero movie is in the same movie as probably the best ironically good scene in any super hero movie. Get used to Sam rami my friend
The emotion in the scene, no words were spoken, but you could understand how Flint was feeling this whole scene, what I really liked about this scene is how the music just "spoke" the emotion for him, and how his sadness of seeing the picture of his daughter, remembering his goal, how much he's determined to do whatever he can to get her back to health, this scene is a musical masterpiece in my opinion, I love it. Edit: Also idk why but this should definitely be added to an ASMR in movies video, just saying =0
Fun fact: The director of this Spiderman trilogy wanted to focus more on the humane side of Spiderman and the villians without venom (venom was supposed to be in the 4th) but sony said no
and that was a big mistake, imagine the money they can milk out of Spider man 4 if they set it up in this movie properly, the hype when venom is gonna be introduced
Originally Sam Raimi didn't want Venom period, not even in Spider-Man 4. The guy used to hate Venom with a passion. Avi Arad talked him into having Venom in this, and it made sense in retrospect, as the symbiote, like in the Spider-Man Animated Series in 1995, made Peter arrogant and angry beyond reason. Part of being humane is overcoming the emotions that poison a person's personality, like the desire for revenge.
You know, from what I heard, Sandman was the one villain Raimi absolutely wanted in this movie and was the most invested into. .... It shows. That scene is beautiful.
Yeah Rami wanted Sandman and Harry to be the only 2 big bad’s, but the executives of Sony said “hey Venom’s neat how about we put Venom in this film.” Now Rami hates Venom as a character and tried to refuse the inclusion but obviously lost. You can see just how little Rami wanted Venom in the movie and hated doing things with him because Eddie Brock isn’t that weight lifter reporter, and all the worst scenes involved either the Symbiote or Venom. There’s a few good scenes but tell me you couldn’t see Peter angry that the police force would hide Ben’s true killer for so long, and him seeing Flint wouldn’t reopen the wound resulting in a similar scene that we got with or without the black suit.
@@asdfihnfaiuwbnf In the Star Wars II, Anakin tells Padme that he hates sands, he says it’s rough and course and it gets everywhere, meanwhile sandman is made of well... sand
The problem with Venom was is that he became such a popular character during that time which explains why he was forced into the movie and Sam Raimi didn’t know anything about him so it’s understandable to see that he didn’t want to include a Villain that he barely knew which is why he never wanted him at all in the first place and Sony had to ruined Raimi’s vision for Spider-Man 3. And by looking at this scene here Raimi was going for Sandman as the main focus, he also wanted to conclude with Harry Osborn’s story with his plan for revenge towards Peter thinking that he killed his father
1:50 what a great analogy for Flints life and character. Watching his daughter from a distance, unable to reach her through gentle means, but when she becomes his only reason to live, he is able to take action and accomplish his goal. Not through virtue, but sheer force of will.

Why cant movies now of days have emotionally good scenes like this To those in the comments: I think what I meant was, more than anything. This scene captured so much emotion for the lack of words it has. You get to watch someone in a way be born into something, barely have the motivation to stand and what rekindles their strength is the thought of their daughter. And it helps him get up. Throughout he appears frustrated yet determined. It's extremely powerful stuff and it's not often seen at such magnitude.
This is one of the most touching, pure, and honest scenes I have ever seen in movies. I miss having villains who really weren’t bad people, they just care for someone dearly. The most touching part for me, is when he tries to pick up his photo, and can’t because he doesn’t have a hand. He tries to cry, but can’t because his tear glands are sand. It’s amazing what a single moment to breathe can do for a movie. No jokes, no blaring climactic music, no intense action, just a slow moment to breathe and take in what’s happening. That’s why I liked [SPOILERS] in No Way Home, felt like the first time I’ve ever been able to breathe in an MCU movie

Rewatching this scene again i honestly feel so many emotions without any dialogue. It's one of the more masterful birth's of a villain i've ever seen in the series. He's turned into sand and slowly reforming himself and the thoughts of helping his daughter somehow create a connection that sustains him enough to regain his form. It's honestly amazing, if the third spiderman movie had just been about SandMan and Harry maybe the movie would have been better. Or maybe just focus on SandMan and Spider-Man's gripe with him. I think without Venom the film would have been much better. Hell Sandman is such a noble villain that he probably could have gotten his own spin off somehow!
Venom wasn't even supposed to be in the movie. It was supposed to be a story of forgiveness- Peter forgives Sandman and Harry forgives Peter. However, due to popularity, Sony ended up forcing Raimi to add Venom into the movie and make that the primary focus, explaining why it's handled poorly. Due in part to greed and, indeed, in part due to us fans for demanding Venom be included.
I’ve always found it motivational when Sandman chooses to stand after looking at the picture of his daughter. That reminder for the things we choose to fight for in the end is beautifully portrayed here.

It’s a shame that Sony forced Raimi to add in venom
The Symbiote alone could have worked. They could have had it that Spiderman gets rid of it right before the last fight and then the last scene of the movie Brock gets it, setting up the next movie.
@@RequiemPoete that is true but Sony wanted venom in Spider-Man 3 so if Raimi pitched that idea to Sony they wouldn’t allow it cause they wanted Spider-Mans top 3 big villains to start the trilogy that would lead to more installments and while Sandman is memorable he’s not as popular as those three
@@JokerVoorhees13 True, but this hypothetical movie probably would have done with Sandman what BtAS did with Freeze.
I think there was a comic or cartoon where Sandman is left on an island and he quickly becomes it turning into a giant fuck off sand Titan.
Such an amazing scene!! This is definitely Rami and not Sony

Idk why but at 1:00 when he tries to get up but falls apart that just broke my heart and also the part when he tried to grab the locket but couldn't
You beat me to it
Chris Kennedy maybe it’s just a feeling of new experience with the sandman & with him falling you know that he has lost his way with the world.
Thats the power of music
spiderman 3 was a masterpiece idc what anyone says
This scene alone is a masterpiece
you are naive and blind but it's ok
@@mihaimercenarul7467 it's aged quite well. Wasn't seen as good when it came out though.
@@badcornflakes6374 I mean, i don't know. The story of the third movie is still all over the place, eddy and venom were unnecessary in this movie, harry was done dirty and the losing memory thing was written awfully. Sandman was the only villain that was done good more or less.
@@mihaimercenarul7467 I give it that "Masterpiece" is a bit of an exaggeration. But it is still a good movie.
Eddy and Venom may have been unnecessary (Sam Raimi agrees btw), but it was not bad scenes actually, the "No More Mr. Nice Guy"-Scenes with Peter was made pretty well for being just there (even the dance scene etc. makes sense if you take into consideration that Peter has no idea how to be a cool badass^^).
I don't know how Harry was done dirty, everything was building up to a fight between him and Peter and it was done well.
BUT I give the point, the amnesia was very awful writing and I didn't get why it was even written there.
I mean I get kinda the point of Eddy and Venom, even if they weren't necessary they weren't bad either. The Amnesia-Part was completely unnecessary.
I still don't get how this movie wasn't nominated for Visual Effects at the Oscars. A perfect contender against At World's End and Transformers.
@Joane Viramontes vemon was goated also im confused
@@thekingofla1204 Having Eddie turning into evil, Harry's fall/redemption arc, Flint's redemption arc, and Peter's fall arc was too much for the movie to cover. Sony wanted a shitload of fanservice. Raimi did good with the cards he was dealt, but frankly, it wasn't enough...
@@semajjarrett3877 thinking about it, spider man 3 could fit more into a series than a movie
The sandman
To me, Sandman never gave up, and that's why he is perfect in the movie. No matter what, he became sand, he fell a couple times, struggled and still got up. Sandman was PERFECT in this movie.
dababy
Why cant movies now of days have emotionally good scenes like this
To those in the comments: I think what I meant was, more than anything.
MISTA JACK people call em cheesy
the music is so into it
MISTA JACK they do. You just have to look for it.
Money
Forget movies nowadays, why couldn’t the rest of the movie have scenes like this?
In a literal and figurative sense, he is pulling himself together. No dialogue, all emotion
This CGI is better than some of the stuff in 2019

Why else do you think this film had an over 250 million dollar budget?
This is one of the most touching, pure, and honest scenes I have ever seen in movies. I miss having villains who really weren’t bad people, they just care for someone dearly.
The most touching part for me, is when he tries to pick up his photo, and can’t because he doesn’t have a hand. He tries to cry, but can’t because his tear glands are sand. So he forms a hand and fingers, so he can pick up that photo.
Pure, honest, and powerful love for his daughter. That’s his real superpower.
Edit: Wow 1K likes guys? Thanks so much ^u^ very appreciated hehe.
Just want to take this chance to say you are all important and have value, and loved. : )
The Vulture from Spider-Man Homecoming is like that, he’s not really a bad person, but he’s pushed to do some things in order to provide for his family.
@@RideMyLighting I will say that we never really see a scene which shows why he's pushed, the whole idea is that he's a normal father doing what's best for his family but we don't see him actually being a family person, most of the time he's with the other villains and when we do see him with his daughter it's too brief and doesn't give anything like spiderman 3 did where there's a reason to care
Now we got darkter strange
@@kodekYT It would be nice to return to more neutral and realistic villains like this. That might be a villain to some but a hero to others, instead of just being plain bad.
This looks like a scene from fantasia-nostalgia critic first viewing

Sandman wasn’t a villain, he was a Father. A Father who’d do literally anything for his child.
Sam Raimi and Christopher Young didn’t have to go all out. But they did. For us.
Thank you Sam Raimi and Christopher Young

The fact that he tried to will himself into shape, failed a few times and then when he saw his pendant he willed his hand to form to pick it up. Sheer willpower because of a loved one. Great story telling.
this scene is a masterpiece
The VFX were so far ahead of its time. Still looks amazing in 2020!

These kinds of scenes are the one thing missing from the MCU Spiderman films, that's why the Raimi trilogy will always be supreme in my eyes. The raw emotion portrayed with no words with Raimi at his best was some of the most unbelievable cinema of the decade.
Well thats what happens when you a comedy movies. You get little to no emotional scenes but when you do they feel out of place and awkward
@@ascendedsavage7040 Not always, it just depends on if you've gotten the audience invested into the characters. "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" and "the Iron Giant" (not a comedy, but it is a generally fun film that makes me a bit emotional in the latter half).
These are the kinds of scenes missing from the MCU in general after Disney bought them
it's the only thing missing
It’s amazing what a single moment to breathe can do for a movie. No jokes, no blaring climactic music, no intense action, just a slow moment to breathe and take in what’s happening. That’s why I liked [SPOILERS] in No Way Home, felt like the first time I’ve ever been able to breathe in an MCU movie
The moment at 1:37 where he looks up to the sky, realising what he's become? Loved the little cascade in the front of him - his heart both metaphorically and literally falling out of his chest at the revelation.
Even in his transformation the only thing he thought about was his daughter.
Sandman is a good father.
That was so powerful! No scream of anguish or horror at one he'd become, just sheer willpower to press on all for his daughter!

True, while Spiderman 3 is not that a great of a film or a great spiderman movie but it's still an enjoyable movie. When it comes to Spiderman related medias outside the comics,I'm big fan of the Spectacular Spiderman animated series,The Sam Raimi Spiderman movies and Into The Spiderverse movie,of course Spiderman 2 The Game and Spiderman PS4 game.
What if I told you that he will be returning to direct the new Doctor Strange movie
The Universal Gaming
I would say, “give me the sources”
Venom needid his own spider man film Sandman was a bad guy yes but he had a reson he was doing bad stuff to save hes little girl
He turned himself into a pickle
Then you should see fanscription version of Spider Man 3
I’ve always found it motivational when Sandman chooses to stand after looking at the picture of his daughter. That reminder for the things we choose to fight for in the end is beautifully portrayed here.
