When I was working in China during the late 1990s and early 2000s there were few homeless people but mostly in big cities not in small towns. They would appear late at night and they would take shelter at 24hr cafes. Most of them do hold a job but they just don't want to rent an apartment but rather sleep out in the open and when the weather turns bad they hang out at 24hr fast food joints or sleep at their place of work double up as the " Unofficial " security guard. I know one of them who works as a cleaner at the place I was working.

Another thing is, Chinese people would always prefer to save some money, in case some unexpected accident happens, like losing their job, or someone in the family gets very sick and needs to be hospitalized for a long period, their life won't be dragged down. But in the US a lot of people don't save some of their salary for the future, so they are always in danger of losing everything.

This is sooooooo true. I've travelled to USA and I've travelled to China. The thing that caught me by surprise is the Street People in USA. I even saw the ones you see on TV in Los Angeles under one of their bridges holding a sign saying he was a retired Vet and needed food. In New York City, I was staying on the 20th Floor of a Hotel only to be woken up by noises of bins at ground level were Street People were going through the trash to find stuff. The amount of Graffiti in USA was disturbing ... some were Artistic, others were not.
But in all of China, I never saw ANY Street people. Everybody had a home to go to. And their Cities were absolutely clean.
So for those trashing China ... you really need to go and visit China to see the TRUTH. I could NOT believe how misguided and misinformed we are until I visited China for myself. I was blown away. It was NOTHING like we've been told back home. And China is the most Futuristic Countries I've ever visited ... leaving all other countries (even USA) for dead.

I’m a Vietnamese, 10 years ago I went to Melbourne for studying, the very first thing that shocked me is that there were many homeless people on the street of Melbourne CBD. They’re not old or disabled or mental ill people but young and look strong, and yes they still asked for other people money and mercy. In my country, no one would behave like that, as long as you have no health issue, you’ll want to work for money, if you’re ill, disabled your family, your neighborhood and local authority will take care of you. The 2nd shocking issue for me is the racism among my western Aussie classmates, they think they’re superior and I feel sad for them. Tellers in the bank, shop clerks, they all show their racism to Asian people like me. Many of my friends admire western culture, freedom but not me. I decided to come back to my country, now I’m proud of my decision to comeback and contribute to my motherland. I'm actually a bit perplexed on why the Chinese government continues to call China a developing nation. Is it because of the low Per Capita compared to other industrialized nations? Mathematically, Chinese per capita is low because of China's huge population. If you factor in GDP, manufacturing throughput, industrial diversity, technological expertise, advanced infrastructure, human development index, literacy rate, health care system, and number of Chinese global corporations in the fortune 100 category, China ticks every box to be categorized as an industrialized nation.

Even the so called "nine years of obligatory education" has yet to fully cover every single corner of the country. Much more still needed to be done before the entirety of the country can be considered a developed nation. Good thing is that the Chinese government is very willing to invest as much resources as possible to get those distant inland areas out of poverty.

Although the average income of the people in China is lower than many western countries, most Chinese owe their houses, and there is no need to pay house tax and council tax, the utility bills are very cheap as well, food and other service costs are cheap too, so the people's living standards are actually no worse than many developed countries.

The real truth about homelessness is that it is mainly an overwhelming sense of "HOPELESSNESS". *I live in the Bay Area.
When people feel they don't belong (family/community) or they can't keep up with the capitalistic class system (money) the abysmal downward spiral of mental depression often than not leads the individual to resort to drugs to cope... ensuring their ability to comeback that much more challenging.
The problem with worshipping money above all else is what you see in the West: no communal identity and therefore no loyalty to each other...

I've just come back from the city centre in Madrid and i've seen more than10 and some empty beds+personal items in two closed shops doorways... it's getting worse and worse and in the meantime governments are busy minding their mogul friend's pockets...

As someone from the US, my understanding is that in the US there are two other factors at work. One, if someone has a mental illness, they are not treated unless they want to or actually commit a harm against someone. The idea of individual freedom is very strong in the US, sometimes to the detriment of the society. Two, there is also some reaction against cases in the past when those with mental illness were mistreated in hospitals. I am not justifying these reasons, but saying these are part of the reasons why in the US there are many with mental illness who are allowed to live on the street.

    • @wip1664
      @wip1664 10 місяців тому +1

People with mental illness should be in a safe, and guarded facility.
Homeless people may be not so "mentally well", but not mentally ill. They too may need to be in a facility, but not with the mentally ill. And of course safe, and somewhat guarded...until they become well, or non-disruptive in a real way to others and the society.
People who are "mentally well" can lose it and behave irrationally, erratically. Lack of self control of emotions and behaviors, or temporarily insane. This group too needs to be addressed, and be not allowed to have the same "privileges" as those who pose absolutely no threat to others.
People regardless of age, race, gender, culture, religion, nationality, lifestyle, etc need to be classified. By now, this is feasible, and better necessary.
Anyway, it is not surprising that even the proven best people may not be mentally well or have enough self control. Best but inferior. I think 'criminal' and 'would be/potential criminals' may be categorized into this group. And I won't go into the chosen ways (not well ways) that some of them have willfully chosen. "Best people" are plentiful in this day and age. It is not necessary to use the best but inferior, and ignore that they are in fact inferior - then waste better people to support them.

In China (and to a less extent in Russia) the Oligarchs are controlled by the Government for the benefit of the people. In the West, even Canada, the Oligarchs control the government for the benefit of the elite 1-5%. There is no equitable distribution of wealth. In America Especially!! There, Lobbying of Government, is legalized Bribery. In most cases 90% of legislation is created to benefit the Wealth, often times written by those who benefit from it by the Lobbyists. The 10% of legislation, faces a harder path to being enacted, because it often goes counter to the benefit of the Wealthy, as it benefits the lower classes. Just look at the legislation during the Reagan to Trump era, that was suppose to aid the countries poorest during times of want. Who got the most (often 80-90%)? It was bailouts for the wealthy, and an after thought pittance for the rest of society. Even their Covid Relief packages. That should open the eyes of the population, but the Media, ranted against it as Communism or Socialist Policies, to a society brainwashed to believe that they will one day be in the upper class, if they work hard. They vote against their own best interest for that reason.

My experience in L.A. was shocking. Walking down Hollywood Blvd, there were trashes everywhere. A big black trash bag was blowing into air and floating everywhere. Venice beach had homeless tents everywhere. That was a little over 2 years ago.

LA is way too overhyped and misrepresented. There are glamorous pockets where the rich live but the average person cannot afford to live in those areas. The core of the city and where most live and hang out is much more run down and awful looking, just with palm trees all over to try to distract from the reality of what it looks like at ground level especially as a pedestrian. The nicest spots are near or in the hills or along the coast, minus Venice area. The rest, not so nice looking. San Diego and Santa Barbara are much better looking as a whole but there are also many homeless in them as the homelessness issue is a national problem in the US.

As someone who had a group home two doors down, with them fighting one another and once, a semi-nude one decided to sit on my porch, I can tell you Reagan was wrong and stupid.

Me too, I thought L.A is the best city so I went to L.A, I saw maybe 40 tents in a small square in a park so I told the taxi driver “wow! They are going to have a concert or event in this place! Look at those tents , so cute, maybe they are waiting the star. What event is it? Who will perform? “ But the taxi driver didn’t answer me anything. Other people in the taxi looked embarrassed and avoid my question too. I went to San Diego old town station. I saw many rats are running , I was very happy because I love animals and I never seen rats in china, I thought they are very cute like pets. I mean I still think they are cute. Even racons are very cute too.

I'm a foreign student from Indonesia ( Honestly, the Universities in USA are still one the best in the world), I witness so many homelessness, crimes , break-in ( cars), drug addicts and gun violence. Most of the street, in the poor area, are littered with garbage and human feces. San Francisco.....you just type " Tenderloin area", " Break-in" , " stealing "and " Crimes". At night ( 10PM...) the city, basically, is dead!!!

Thanks for showing this part. Because it won't be realistic if it's all modernity that we see. It's not as bad as those we see in the US, and other countries. China used to be a real poor country. It was and still is run like a business, you want the most customers? Sell your products the lowest price possible. Charge the lowest, give the lowest reasonable wage to your workers, ---this is China--style and it's what attracted the most number of multinationals or corporations to locate in China thus making it become rich that fast. It was the factory of the world, still is, but many now also locate their back offices and factories in Southeast Asia.
