This is a phenomenal track, thanks for reacting to this Greg. Clever the way Ian Brown makes the lyrics work, the first letter of each word in every line corresponding to the letters F.E.A.R. - very clever and powerful - particularly with the strings adding some emotional 'oomph'. I have the album this came from which is all good but this is definitely the standout track
"the first letter of each word in every line corresponding to the letters F.E.A.R. - very clever and powerful". Oh crap! I didn't catch that. LOL. Thanks for setting me straight, Erich!
Loving you're selection of bands Greg, being a Manchester bloke having lived through the hole explosion of music coming out of Manchester in the late 80s into the 90s is bringing back some great memories, great times!
The whole album, 'Music Of The Spheres' is a masterpiece. Most tracks apart from 1 are perfect IMO. Check out 'Stardust' and 'Northern Lights' from the same album if you like this. So well produced as well - lots of interesting sounds and arrangements going on. Nice if you like a smoke as well, though not essential.
Great reaction Greg. For me the lyrics make the song, really shows how good Ian is as a songwriter. It wasn’t all Squire! As for the meaning, I guess it explores the meaning of fear and it’s affect on people, and what people believe (maybe wrongly). I think the best songs are those where it has multiple meanings for different people. Next, I think you should do “Keep What Ya Got”. Try and watch the music video if you can. He co wrote it with Noel Gallagher and he makes an appearance. Other Ian songs I recommend would be: “My Star”, “Time Is My Everything”, “Corpses In Their Mouths”. Those are my favourites, but he has many other great songs.
The cool thing about this song is that each sentence of lyrics spells FEAR. like how Finding Everything And Realizing spells FEAR with the first letter of each word. Im rpetty sure Keep What Ya Got spells ADIDAS sometimes
The original King Monkey! Nice track.Richard Ashcroft and he have put out some nice solo music after their bands ended. Their productions sound similar. Yes, I would not be surprised if his vocal was cleaned up.. His singing can get sketchy. All in all, a nice tune, I would include it on a mixed playlist.
One of the greatest songs ever made. Each line made with F.E.A.R is just amazing, it seems easy but definitely it doesn’t. Ian brown is a very underrated talent and artist. He deserves much more recognition than Liam Gallagher.
Although not a fan of the man, Ian Brown has undoubtedly made some excellent songs, this one probably being the strongest. 'Dolphins Were Monkeys' and 'Golden Gaze' are also worth a look. Nice reaction, and I think you're right about the instrumentation - synthesised/sampled strings.
Longsight M13, Time is my everything, Shadow of a Saint, My Star, Corpses, First world problems are all great tracks - Brown has got a great catalogue of solo work
Great reaction as always Greg. Yeah this tracks strength is the lyrics, very simple idea executed to perfection. Some of Ians lyrics on his solo stuff are a bit weak IMO too many mentions of angels, heaven, flying high etc but on F.E.A.R he gets it spot on. For me he either smashes it or leaves you feeling a bit cringe, some of his lyrics are 14 year old schoolboy stuff and some are beautifuly profound, hes done some great solo stuff but i usually find that each album has about 4 or 5 brilliant tracks and 4 or 5 tracks i don't revisit. He done another track on this album with a similar lyric trick but only for the chorus, T.I.M.E (Time Is My Everything) its a great track too and has a mariachi (sic?) trumpet on it ! It was a tribute to his Mexican wife and you should give it a listen. Keep on keeping on.
Manchester's greatest artist (and I literally loved The Smiths). Saw Ian Brown last week in Altrincham, still as cool as f**k. My boy has just passed his entrance exam to go to Altrincham Grammar School, the same one Ian Brown went to in the 80's. He may come across as a bit of a scally (Manchester talk for a naughty lad) but he was educated in one of the best schools in the North of England, possibly attributes to his lyrical skills. Manchester has a superb musical history and Ian Brown/The Stone Roses are at the epitome.
This man is an inspiration!
Amazing tune. His second album 'Golden Greats' is a masterpiece. Saw him at Rothes Halls years ago, c'mon the Kdy beep squad!!
Golden gaze 👍👍👍👍.
