Great shout to Pete for bringing these songs F.E.A.R is s phenomenal tune, but Check The Meaning is a masterpiece. Ashcroft is so underrated. He should be considered one of the best singer/songwriters in the history of the UK he is so much more than Urban Hymns
Two great songs but I’m choosing F.E.A.R. Never been a huge Stone Roses fan but this track is work of a genius. Music and lyrics just sublime. Glad you like it!
Just found your channel. Great that you like Richard Ashcroft. I played decades before Verve. I was a mate of Pete Shelley and we played in bands. I still produce cool percussion. Richard Ashcroft is a Wigan hero. My hometown.
Totally Blown Away by Check the Meaning ! 🔥 What A Great Track . Was not aware Richard Ashcroft had solo Stuff at all. Only know of him from The Verve ...Sonnet ,Lucky Man , The drugs don't work and of course their Huge Bittersweet Symphony such an epic track . Knew of F.E.A.R though and it's totally Epic too 😎 But Richard Ashcroft just has to be my winner here. Such A Great Battle Pete 👌
If you like the Verve man you def need to listen to some of Richards Solo stuff! He has released 5 albums and still tours to this day selling out wherever he goes! One of the last rock stars left in Britain.

Both songs are masterpieces. I was obsessed with FEAR when it came out. I like both Ashcroft and Brown as solo artists. I think Brown completely reinvented himself going solo. Brave New World is a beautiful song by Ashcroft.
It really isn't, FEAR is still spoken about today as one of the greatest British songs ever, check the meaning, most people have never heard of. Let's not be silly here
@overthewebb sorry mate but I still stand by it I don't think RA solo stuff has been given enough credit and don't get me wrong love browns solo work aswell
I wasn't too sure about the merits of a song battle but am beginning to see that the analysis and comparison of a pair of tracks creates an interesting dialogue. Nice reaction from you two, father and son, great stuff. Love both of these tracks massively but F.E.A.R. wins it for me, just love the way each lyric line starts with the letters F...E...A...R. Super cool. As a suggestion for a future song battle how about 'The Wheel' by Idles vs 'Jobseeker' by Sleaford Mods, both quite recent punky bands. Wont be offended if you choose different....!
I don’t know any thing about Ian Brown or the Stone Roses. Both songs are great and have much appeal. I am partial to Richard Ashcroft because of the very first Verve EP which is a gem.
Should give the Stone Roses debut from 1989 a listen some time. Considered one of the best debut albums of all-time and it actually does live up to the hype. Thanks Carl!
I love Richard Ashcroft and The Verve! My favourite song from them is The Drugs Don’t Work which is one of my favourite songs! You should listen to their studio album called Urban Hymns!!!😃👍☮️❤️
Saw this, Interesting. I’m a Hughe fan of both their bands…..and very ardent and amorous fiend of all their solo albums…. Ian always had that dance Track thing goin on …. The Guy was doing Micheal Jackson Billie Jean .. lol. Richards acoustic Gibson J 200 renditions of his craft is so clever and cool …. I’m going for a wash on this…. I’m completely biased on both these geniuses…. Let’s Do Stellify vs Break the night!! Lol totally different artist …. Remember … Richard was big fan of roses before he even started The Verve🤙🏽
Shawn and Trey, Going by the facts you share, this sounds like a cool song battle. Did you say someone called Ashcroft the best singer in the world ? That is a bold statement to make. The first song is very good. The tempo is steady, the music has a big time sound with strings and guitar and piano giving the song a full music sound. . The lyrics deep and meaningful. The vocal fits the song well. I agree about the production. You guys made great comments describing this song. The second song has a nice intro with strings. A solid Rock song with music sounds effects mixed with strings and good percussion and drums. Interesting lyrics. I agree about the clever song writing. Both songs are openers ? Great way to open albums. I agree that both songs are powerful, I also agree with you guys that the first song is the winner of this battle. Great song battle battle Pete.
Oooh, those were good, probably listened to F.E.A.R once before (you know, in 2016 when Marillion released an album called, erm, F.E.A.R -oh gosh, I've done it again...) but the Richard Ashcroft tune is superb so that gets my nod. I remember seeing his first solo album everywhere when it first came out, but I see it ultimately stalled at #26 in NZ despite the hype and he never charted again there as a solo act. Pity, as it proves there was *some* good (UK at least) chart music being made in the norties!
I think Chris Miller copies some of Ashcroft's trade moves and voice technique!! Of course, I think of R.A.'s music as modern GOTHIC Medieval music!! I prefer R.A.'s Check The Meaning!! Love this song! After listening for decades to American and English bands I think R.A. comes out on top for me! He said he got the idea of older music preference from his mom like Sinatra and other smooth music from the 50s!! Yep, his music washes all your body!! Vibrational chords washes out the whole body!! R.A.'s a musical genius since perhaps Mozart!! But I've not heard Ian Brown but the music soundz great! Still love R.A.'s music!!
my name is tommy and i became aware 6 years ago..i hear what your saying .i hear what all songs mean because thanks to richard i checked the meanings...and thanks to ian , i realised i had the fear ...now we just keep the faith and the words of prophecy.....lose the fear..they both won....
Has anyone in the UK heard of the 'Check the meaning' song? I doubt it, however FEAR is regarded by most as a British classic. It's a no brainer here. I like Ashcroft, but on this battle only one winner. You guys need some help calling it otherwise, my respect for you both went out the window tbh
@@ReactionsToTheClassics that's ok, one day it may happen until that time then you need to feel the shame of it. Hahaha Btw check out the Ian Brown Album - Music of the spheres which the FEAR song came from. A real classic imo. I still kinda hate Coldplay for stealing the album name also btw. Take care guys 👍

He is for sure underrated. Thanks Mark!
Totally agree about Ashcroft 👍. I enjoyed his debut album more than urban hymns actually and had so many great tunes/albums after also.
Fantastic expectations amazing revelations ✌️🏴
Thanks for Watching!
I have to say fear won ,that lyric was in my head
Two superb songs but FEAR has always been a big fav Iain brown tune
Thanks Kevin!
FEAR four letters you can turn into many things

My favourite two Manchester songs post 1995, both played almost every day in my car as I drive
