She is the most badass female to ever exist. My favorite moment is when she gives absolutely no fucks when walking through the lasers in that one episode with the robots.
@Detective Faith The Detective Of Hanna Barbera no fuck you and love this guys channel alone as Owen and Thumper's parents told them if you cant say something nice dont say nothing at all
Towards the end of the series, it seemed that Grim and Mandy seemed to be developing a mutual appreciation. Mandy likes Grim’s power, and Grim likes Mandy’s inner strength and darkness.
Awesome analysis about Mandy. She has been also one of my favorite characters not just in the series but also in cartoon history. Mandy is an awesone, cunning, complicated and extremely intelligent character and I think she was half-way to be complete evil from top to bottom. I say this because I agree with your first theory regarding her personality; deep down she really cares about her friends, but she doesn't know how to manage those feelings toward them, but also she has a sadistic trait of her own, that is undeniable. The episode that focus on her family dynamic is legendary; Mandy instilled a level of fear and control that was beyond of anything I've ever seen in a cartoon and therefore clearly showed that Mandy is manipulative and malevolent. Great video.
I agree with you on this review, Mandy didn't have as much character development, and felt too quiet and emotionless and didn't have a lot to say, and she had a cool concept going on with her, a sinister, cynical, sarcastic, merciless, emotionless, stoic, manipulative, and mean little girl who's an anti-hero and is 75 protagonistic, and 25 antagonistic, and she's into dark things, especially of her dreams taking over the world and being power hungry but never was able to do so, the closest was taking over the KND in the crossover, and didn't feel they showed enough of her uniqueness, she had a lot going on with her, with an idea of her being friends with a Grim Reaper, to add more extensions to Mandy, I would have hoped she had a chemistry lab to work on experiences or something, or her becoming a lawyer or something would have been good extensions to her characters. She was definitely the least developed of the trio. She had a really good concept to her, being the goth chick and having a bunch of supernatural things happen to her and all, but sadly at the end, it wasn't pulled off well. Mandy was not a character who's idea got it going for her pulled off well. Similar to Foster's home, Frankie could have been pulled off better if they gave her more screening time, and did more with her character to make her more unique, among many other things about Foster's, they had more potential, but was wasted and not pulled off well.
I believe there is a hidden child abuse theme in this show; Billy's parents are abusive and reckless and Mandy's parents are neglectful, and this treatment(s) lead to them becoming who they are. Billy most likely was beaten a lot, whether accidentally or deliberately, by his dim-witted dad and emotionally unstable mother, which caused him to suffer brain damage and built up his happy-go-lucky around that mindset, believing such abuse meant love, considering he now enjoys the abuse. Mandy was never given any kind of attention or love from her folks, so she became isolated and unable to feel emotions such as empathy and kindness, and her desire for control and power could stem from her need for attention. Her parents obviously failed to realize this (they probably know what she wants, but not why she wants it), and are afraid to confront her, so the problem keeps escalating until it just becomes her way of life.
A very interesting perspective, the first that I've seen. Mandy is an incredibly cynical yet down to earth character. She reminds me alot of George Carlin's cynicism and philosophical look on life. Thanks for enlightening me with the subject. On a different note: Maybe we can factor the everyday existence as an issue, with mandy being able to see the world as it is. Endsville was approprietly named not only for the shows themes, but maybe also to symbolise mandy's whit as the last bastion of sanity and wisdom in an everyday snoozfest of a town. Unlike her, Billy is happy with the existing life in endsville, and is a happy go lucky guy even after how she treats him in some episodes. Adding this to your theory I think one can see that the last touch of joy from daily existence mandy has comes from billy. There's one thing to note in your analysis: in the episode where she smiles, billy tells crubina the underworld artist that mandy never smiled ever since her birth. Just a footnote.
+music mod joe I have thought about that idea of Billy being Mandy's external brightness and joy, which is why she hangs out with her and I remember the movie, Big Boogie Adventure, where Mandy almost thought she would lose Billy and the first thing that popped up in her mind was Billy laughing.
There’s also Billy’s abuse to his Spider son which is usually a joke, but it’s actually disturbing as Geoff seems to know he’s being abused yet comes back multiple times as he’s looking for love and acceptance from his father. Grim is also a literal abuse victim in the show as he is treated with verbal and physical harassment in each episode by literally everyone it seems, but manly Mandy and Billy. You could also make an argument for Nergal Jr being abused or not raised correctly as he’s put in the same situation as Mandy with his only friends being the main characters, and probably only because Billy is his cousin. He was set up by Mandy to fight Erwin though.
I mean, her parents literally CAN'T stand up to her. They tried once and she revealed that she literally controls their minds and forces them to let her do what she wants.
Hey I think Mandy is a 5/10 on the tomboy-girly girl scale, because she has a pink dress she wears everyday with black mary janes, a pink bedroom, a pink night gown, and pink swimsuits, and she's always folding her legs crossed and making others treat her like a queen, and she has decorated her room all girly once like what she did to Billy's room in the episode "A Really Odd Couple", and has had her nails done and beauty treatment like in "Tricycle of Terror" and "Big Trouble in Billy's Basement" and worn glamorous clothing like dresses and heels and earrings a few times like in "The Schlubs", and wearing a dutch girl outfit in "Sister Grim" and she even started caring about her looks in "My Fair Mandy" and actually enter the beauty pageant, and she accepted in becoming a cheerleader in "The Wrongest Yard" and she even likes Nancy Druel books in "The Taking Tree" and she gave Grim a makeover in "Look Alive", but yes she is a little tomboyish too, like she likes junk food and TV, since all she does all day is sit on the couch and watch TV, and she likes things dark and melancholy, like dressing as a prostitution attorney with monster claws for Halloween in "Grim or Gregory?" as well as zombie fighting video games as shown in "Brown Evil", and she is skilled with hand to hand combat, and she's really good at confrontation, she's a tough cookie, and really doesn't have any girl friends either, and she has interest in things like race-car driving like in "Go Kart 3000" and riding a motorcycle and dressed like a biker girl in "Giant Billy and Mandy All Out Attack" and she has some interest in military things like that couch gag when she says "we attack at dawn" and wearing a military camo outfit with face paint in "Billy and Mandy's Jacked up Halloween" claiming she has a secret mutant army as well as having goth metal posters in "Scary Poppins" as well as hating romance like in "Crushed". So all in all, she is 50/50 of tomboyish and girly.
Hopefully, if HBO Max does something with the show, like a revival of some sort, hopefully Mandy will have alot more focus and maybe more "badass" than the original series, cause I feel "badass" is a hyperbole to describe her in the original series, with how quiet she was, and she came off as neglected and just an existing background side character. I'd like to start a meme called "Mandy is best background character"
Nergal Junior is another interesting character from this show. Because it is seen throughout the series that he can be very cynical if you don’t treat him right. I mean the very first episode he was introduced was already a pretty disturbing episode where he freezes up everyone and turns them into snowmen. But I think his sinister side really shows in the episode “Substitute Teacher” where Sperg really learns his lesson about bullying a kid who is not fully human.
6:07 Mandy (angrily pulling Grim by his cloak) You're gonna do it! Or so help me, I will pull your stupid cloak through your eyes, and use it as reins to ride your bony butt back to the darkest pits of the underworld FROM WHENCE YOU CAME!!
She has put up with billy for a long time... But why? She is smart, evil and basically can get away with most of the events and you would say she is using him but for what? Billy is basically a naive, dumb and kindhearted individual and it begs us as to why she hangs around with him... I think she secretly loves him in a brother and sister fashion
Mandy's parents aren't really pathetic for being afraid of their daughter when they have no way to enforce any authority over her, she's too strong/demonic.
I would understand this, but I find it hard to believe that. They've known her since she was baby. I'm pretty sure she wasn't always plot-induced overpowered and I find it easier to believe she became strong and demonic after already being neglected by their parents and them being afraid of her is more so something that happened afterwards.
a just watch the episode today and she just tried to prove that not number one and escape. You can say she was smart enough to see out of the cartoon logic But not outsmarted that title goes to the lucky pants
Good analysis. I can actually agree with the theories you make about why Mandy is the way she is. I am looking back at Grim Adventures episodes and I think Mandy has likability because of her environment and the overall tone of the show as well as the reasons you mentioned. I mean, if she were a character in a show that wasn't so silly and dark and that was more realistic and advocated friendship, she would not be likable. So yes, I do like Mandy in the show she's from but my all-time favorite animated characters have to be characters I can imagine myself forming a happy bond with and Mandy doesn't qualify.
I'm sorry I got a happy bond with Mandy cos my inner self would beat her up and she would beat me up and we would be equals. No, seriously. A happy bond with Mandy
There is a theory running around that Mandy is as cynical as she is because it's a front. She's the reason Billy is as challenged as he is and she feels tremendous guilt over it. In an early prototype short, she explains a medical practice that involves having g a hole drilled into your skull. Billy wants her to try, and accidentally lobotomized him. She can't deal with the guilt in a healthy way so she simply drowns it in a sea of rancor. But it's why she always sticks by Billy and probably will for the rest of her life.
I think the huge focus on Billy is due to having to make Longer Segments. Season 1 was just Segments from Grim & Evil where they had to do 2 6 minute Billy & Mandy Segments to leave room for a 6 Minute Evil Com Carme Segments inbetween. When the Shows Seperateed (Evil Con Carne's 2nd Season and Billy & Mandy's 2nd-6th Seasons) they had to do 2 twelve minute segments
Interesting case study of your all-time fave character! She is quite the twisted enigma and that's why we love her! Also not bad for an early vidder of yours!
I'm happy that finally an anlysis of this welll written character was made, you and 1717Dave proposed enlightning theories on the subject. i'd lie to add a little bit of my own based on my comment to Dave: I believe that the show not only has the parental and child relationship issue at hand (as you two pointed out), but maybe it talks about the everyday existence: Mandy refuses to become part of the norm and chooses to be anti social (think of it, the only time she interacts with world is to further a point or a goal she makes, or to hang out with billy and drown everyday life in the moment). Billy is different, he is the rainbow of the two, the one who seeks to live his life to best. He hangs out with mandy because of the strong bond they have since their infancy. I also think that Billy is sort of a missing piece in mandy's personality, just as she is to him, and both of them being such pieces in grim's life. Both friendship and interpetations of everyday life can be viewed through this show.
+music mod joe It's also kind of interesting how Grim is a mix of both characters. A good example of this is the episode where Grim, Billy and Mandy went to a heavenly dimension with rainbows, unicorns and a peaceful environment. While Billy was super happy to be there, Mandy and Grim found the place repulsive and while Mandy remained that way, Grim admitted that the place wasn't bad and that it is kind of relaxing.
The fact that we can interpert the characters in such a complex fashion (and characters from fairy oddparents) is atestement to how well written they are. I agree with you on grim, but I think he also has parental issues: Remember the episodes with his parents, the one with his mom shows him to be scorned by her, the one with his dad shows him trying to live up to his expectations and never getting any attention as a kid, the last one is where he went to his first reaping, there he was confined to his parents' strict conduct (his dad consideres music for "sissies", as grim wanted to grow up and be a singer, maybe to impress his dad). In many ways our three heroes come from normal looking homes, but have broken family portrait (figurativly).
14:09 woah, that explains SO MUCH about why I specifically remember the show how it was. Like for some reason it felt like Billy was the "main" protagonist, even though it's meant to be that Grim is the central character (and the most relatable one as he's the straight man) I understand your pain 😔 I feel like If Billy was toned down a bit and Mandy and Grim were toned up more it would have been definitely more bearable for the parents. Another seemed to be an intentional decision from Maxwell Atoms, who just really likes writing for Billy (he's said that he put a lot of himself into making Billy) This might be a bit of a stretch, but another possible reason might have been that it's a lot better for business for kids shows to be marketed towards specific groups. (there must be boys shows and girls shows, and if a show is popular with all kids, boys are usually picked as the focus audience) the writers must have noticed how popular with boys B&M is, and decided to prioritize certain characters accordingly (a.k.a. the idea that it would be easier for boys to relate to a boy character than a girl or a skeleton)
Wait, you're right. Something's off with the video. It's weird because this has never happened to me before. I'll try to contact UA-cam or something. idk Thanks for pointing it out.
She did grew on me as the show progressed. Way better than another angry girl with a pink shirt and a gum ball machine (both also from Cartoon Network)
Mandy and Robin are both serious cartoons characters! Robin the good boy hero is mostly the bad boy villain but Mandy the bad girl villain is mostly the good girl hero.
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." Billy and Mandy are the malice and stupidity in this statement respectively.
I always like when the mean character has a Morality Pet, which is a person or a pet that they have a soft spot for, or will display genuine kindness to when they won't for anybody else. For Mandy, that is Billy. For all that she punches, abuses, and taunts him, she is also the first to save him when he is in danger. Grim even called her Billy's girlfriend because they're undeniably attached to the hip. Sarah has a morality pet in Jimmy. For all her cruelty towards Ed, she is fiercely protective and especially chummy towards Jimmy, a pasty, frail, and sensitive child.
When it comes to Mandy's parents, I've always thought they were similar to Vicky's, because of how they're intimidated by their own daughter. Now, after watching this, I realized they also have a bit of Timmy Turner's parents in their character as well. I never cared for Mandy's parents anyway. Billy's mom and dad may be a lunatic and a dumbass respectively, but at least they're entertaining to watch, and not as neglectful, right?
+NoParking Berry Exactly. Billy's parents, especially Billy's mom, at least tries to be a mom and cares about Billy, even if she's clearly unstable. Mandy's parents don't even care. Also, quick side note, I think Mandy's dad wanted to have a son, as evident in an episode of season 3.
TwistedDanns Huh. That side note sounds like another similarity shared with Timmy's parents, who originally wanted a girl (which explains why Timmy's hat and shirt are pink). 🤔
Well your parents theory is trash. Her parents DID try to disaplin her and she showed SHE is in charge. And Mandy HAS smiled once.in the pagent episode. Destroyed the space time continuum as Mandy by nature is not supposed to smile!
@@TwistedDannsbut Mandy is short for Amanda. It means meant to be loved and adored. 🥰 Hence her appearance. But her personality is obviously the opposite. That’s called kimo kawaii.
It's been confirmed with Maxwell atoms that Billy and Mandy will be together in the future and have kids I have 2 more things to say BTW First Mandy's is sooooo my spirit animal And last can you do more Billy and Mandy content
@Detective Faith The Detective Of Hanna Barbera why do you do that Bloo might have been a jerk in later episodes but hes not somone who would outright punch or strangle someone.
- she is such an awesome character. I didn't know how to articulate it to the degree you have, but everythign you said makes sense (except when you used Billy trying to kill that spider as evidence of jerkiness, thats hero work to me!) to how I feel about it, good job!
I got this joke from a fanfic. Unnamed young female stranger: Hey Grim, where's that pink clad girl you usually babysit? Maddy? Grim: It's Mandy. (chuckles) Though I don't blame you for thinking it was Maddy.
Reapers aren't evil their neutral they have no business With heaven or hell they're just neutral. They're meant to bring the dead to different areas of the afterlife.
@Detective Faith The Detective Of Hanna Barbera Can you say anything besides Disgrace , Fugly and Courage and Needs to die if Not then Shut the Fuck up
What if Mandy was an accident? Mandy's Parents appear to be very sexually active (considering how much time they spend with each other and how they act) so maybe they didn't plan Mandy and, as a result, don't really want to make time for her?
tbh jack o'lantern came the closest as he shrugged off mandy's pranks and squeezed her cheek saying "you really think you can trick jack?" to her face...honestly jack is my favorite villain of the show
I really don’t like her but I don’t hate her is that she just forced grim doing chores and aduse and hurting billy like aduse is not okay and I really want to slap her
Who is more dumber? Patrick, Billy, Homer, Ed, or Peter. Homer Simpson from the Simpsons. Peter Griffin from Family Guy. Ed from Ed Edd N Eddy or Patrick Star from SpongeBob Squarepants.
She is the most badass female to ever exist. My favorite moment is when she gives absolutely no fucks when walking through the lasers in that one episode with the robots.

Maybe because she knows no one is dumb enough to be her friend
@@antony1292 that is also likely, yes
@@antony1292 yeah, Billy is basically the only character who puts up with her. Even the most evil people can get lonely.
The scene of the kraken taking billy in boogey adventure pm confirms this as she was on the verge of crying after he didn't immediately come back
Mandy's parents aren't really pathetic for being afraid of their daughter when they have no way to enforce any authority over her, she's too strong/demonic.
I would understand this, but I find it hard to believe that. They've known her since she was baby. I'm pretty sure she wasn't always plot-induced overpowered and I find it easier to believe she became strong and demonic after already being neglected by their parents and them being afraid of her is more so something that happened afterwards.
Mandy is not strong it’s how the people around her make her feel like she’s strong and make her feel like she can over power them
One of my favorite Mandy moments is probably the time that she pulled a casque of amontillado on billy, it was great.
Mandy is definitely one of my favorite characters in the series, she wasn’t just your average little girl, she was a tough badass.
Mandy don't want to play Magic Unicorn Garden, But She don't like Unicorns.
Mandy is the reason why I like female characters like Raven (Teen Titans) Gwen (Total Drama) Maleficent and Mai (ATLA)
i love how number 5 from kids next door was the only one smart enough to out smart her in that cross over episode XD
a just watch the episode today and
she just tried to prove that not number one and escape.
Mandy is my little angry daughter,,, I love her

Mandy also was able to control the delightful children from down the lane which IS an incredible feat as well
+SapphireDragon95 yeah. Not to mention take over the entire Kids Next Door organization.
First time I saw Mandy, I had my question that why does she never smiles
Then I had a theory that she has some kind of “emotional” disease
I think the huge focus on Billy is due to having to make Longer Segments.
Season 1 was just Segments from Grim & Evil where they had to do 2 6 minute Billy & Mandy Segments to leave room for a 6 Minute Evil Com Carme Segments inbetween.
When the Shows Seperateed (Evil Con Carne's 2nd Season and Billy & Mandy's 2nd-6th Seasons) they had to do 2 twelve minute segments
The tension between Irwin and Mandy was immense, it’s a shame they never paid it off though.
Irwin’s a massive creep, why didn’t Mandy just kill him?
Interesting case study of your all-time fave character! She is quite the twisted enigma and that's why we love her!
Also not bad for an early vidder of yours!
I haven't watched this video in a while, though it's probably better than most of my older videos that don't hold up. lol
I had a crush on Mandy when I was a little boy along with Gaz from Invader Zim!
14:09 woah, that explains SO MUCH about why I specifically remember the show how it was. Like for some reason it felt like Billy was the "main" protagonist, even though it's meant to be that Grim is the central character (and the most relatable one as he's the straight man)
I understand your pain 😔 I feel like If Billy was toned down a bit and Mandy and Grim were toned up more it would have been definitely more bearable for the parents. Another seemed to be an intentional decision from Maxwell Atoms, who just really likes writing for Billy (he's said that he put a lot of himself into making Billy)
This might be a bit of a stretch, but another possible reason might have been that it's a lot better for business for kids shows to be marketed towards specific groups. (there must be boys shows and girls shows, and if a show is popular with all kids, boys are usually picked as the focus audience)
the writers must have noticed how popular with boys B&M is, and decided to prioritize certain characters accordingly (a.k.a. the idea that it would be easier for boys to relate to a boy character than a girl or a skeleton)
I always thought Mandy was an interesting character and now I just feel bad for her

@Detective Faith The Detective Of Hanna Barbera What does Courage have to do with Mandy?.
@Detective Faith The Detective Of Hanna Barbera You're not making any sense.
Mandy is a Pastel Goth. Into gothic things but has a cute innocent physical appearence.
Mandy is so similar to The Brain from Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain.
Mandy is the Brain while Billy is Pinky. 😉👍 The resemblance is strikingly uncanny!
Uh-oh. She's getting Angry. 😮 Scrap!
What do you think of Gaz from Invader Zim who is more or less Nickelodeon's Mandy ?
She's a scary goth chic.
Same with Ren and Stimpy.
@@th3azscorpio Could you imagine if Mandy came across Sarah and Kevin too
Jade West with Cat Valentine
I had a crush on her when I was young watching.
