One of my favorite Cartoon Network shows, even when I started watching it at the "Yes" era, God Fred and Cheese were EVERYWHERE. My favorite all time bit I think about to this day is when Pud'n is so frightened, that he accidentally jumps out the school window multiple times, and is falling for several seconds because the school is on a large mountain peak for some reason. (Eris, with body of Francine Smith and the voice of Hailey Smith lol)
I forgot how oddly dark this cartoon was. The one episode that will always stick out in my mind is when Billy and Mandy have to stop themselves from turning into babies or something. It was kinda nerving as a kid but still went over my head as I was too young to fully get what was going on.
that episode terrified me. In the end when grim was desperately trying to flip his hourglass back around but couldn't because he was too small and weak filled me with such internal dread and sadness...especially the part when he eventually gives up and sadly waves goodbye before disappearing...why would they do that??
It's wasn't until Pan pointed it out in this video that I realized Season 1 was more dark and unnerving while season 2 and the rest of the seasons were more about slapstick. Honestly, I think it was for the best that the show ended after 6 seasons. Billy and Mandy: The CN show along with Ed Edd N Eddy my Mom didn't really like me watching(which in Billy and Mandy's case I could totally understand)
My dad hated cow and chicken and ed edd and eddy but he still allowed me to watch it. Believe it or not he loved the powerpuff girls, dexter lab, and johnny bravo.
My mom literally banned me from watching the very last episode of Ed Edd n Eddy cause it was "poisoning my impressionable mind" Little did she know I discovered the magic that was pirating sites at the time lmao
7:40 one of my favorites from the series, "The Halls of Time" (SPOILERS) ends this way. It's thrilling to see Mandy and Grim rush back to the hourglasses to save themselves from death by Benjamin Button-ing. Also has a fun Maxwell Atoms cameo, "Holy crud, this my best idea ever!" and Billy calls him "probably no one special" 😂
This show influenced my sense of humor as a kid that and Ed Edd n Eddy, so glad you did a retrospect of the show and there's just so much to unpack like how in the third movie they were fighting an even marshemellow bunny and they killed him with hot chocolate. Absolutely great cartoon
I always liked this show, through all seasons and changes. One change I noted was at the beginning, Grim tended to hang out a lot with Billy, with Mandy being more of a bossy, controlling nuisance to him, but in the later episodes, Grim seemed to gain an admiration for Mandy’s mindset and determination. There were so many little things tossed into the show, whether it be the Greek and Sumerian myths and tales of the underworld, the old horror movie standbys, Irwin being part mummy and part vampire, some of the gross out humor, the boogeyman, the balance of both humor and terror. Something to look for, Billy’s parents resemble the Flintstones, and Mandy’s resemble the Jetsons.
Billy and Mandy has to be that one cartoon I didn’t find messed up as a kid, but wonder how the hell they got away with as much as they did as an adult.
@Cody Forsberg honestly I was the same. And can’t tell you why. Same with courage. Everyone always says how horrifying it was and I was always just laughing or enjoying the animation. Even today I can’t really get it.
22:48, I really loved that guy in the episode where mandy smiles and he yells something like "You fools! have changed the order things are meant to be!!!!"
Holy shit your right, I just looked her up, sometimes I swear to God, I like 2d women over 3d women, I think the internet has poisoned my mind but rule 34 is my friend, I don't know if that's a good thing
I was hoping you'd mention the Voltaire episode. That one is absolutely my fave. I love musical episodes and it got me into Voltaire's music. Also, I still quote one of Mandy's little intro sections. "Its not enough to succeed, Others must fail." Also, not gonna lie. The TV Movies were all great.
Voltaire is one of those artists that I followed at first because of the silly song in middle school, but I've just followed ever since because his music is super good. The camp from his spooky stuff transfers really well into fun period piece music (pirate, medieval, etc), and even when he totally steps away from camp, it's all still super good stuff.
8:03 was my favorite title card song. this was just such a good show back in the day. I used to see grim and evil on in later years but I never cared for it because it wasnt the main characters. but Major Dr. Ghastly is a freaking hot character design. Great video, I've always enjoyed your Halloween specials, and I love how you always throw in Simpsons hit and run level 7 music, which was defiantly great Halloween music.
Yo Pan, What about that one episode, “Tickle me Mandy”, where Billy ask Grim to create a fake Mandy while the real one is away. That dream sequence really scared the hell outta me when I was young! Never again will I recover from that lol
This is one of my childhood favourite CN shows, alonng with Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy, The Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter's Laboratory, Foster's Home and Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi
I rewatched a lot of the episodes and man. After season 1 this show just becomes really funny. Also I like how Mandy went from evil overlord to just a really smart moody girl. She actually sometimes tries to give Billy advice. Like why he shouldn't try to impress thugs in the cool ghost episode
I loved this one. One of my childhood favorites, together with Ed, Edd n' Eddy and Kids Next Door. I was quite a grumpy kid, so my mom would sometimes compare me to Mandy, much to my chagrin. Fast forward twelve years and she's now my favorite character.
Y'all remember that one time when billy's dad picked his brain out of his nose and ate it, thinking it was a boogie? Shit used to freak me out as a kid now I juss think that shit hilarious
As someone who is now into electronic music, I actually love the weird unsettling synths. Almost reminds me of A Clockwork Orange among other works that contained a lot of synth works.
kinda sounds like evil con carne was ahead of its time of having a bad guy as the lead before despicable me, megamind, league of super evil, & villainous
Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy was my favorite cartoon of the 2000's, with it's wackiness, gross out jokes, and dark humor, it's the one I watched the most during my teen years.
One joke from Evil Con Carne I will never forget is Skarr saying he bought 6 starving huskies and then Hector says he only sees 5 huskies then Skarr says they're no longer starving Also in episode of Billy & Mandy Toadblatt and Squidhat get married and kiss gay rights
The Triangle of horrifying cartoon network shows, were billy and mandy, courage the cowardly dog, and flapjack, those shows made me immune to horror movies and games...except Silent Hills PT
9:47 I honestly believe Yogi and Boo Boo in that episode are intended to be the same versions from the weird John K Yogi Bear short. If you don't know what im talking about just look up John K Yogi Bear, basically CN let John K do a few weird shorts with old classic Hannah Barbara cartoon characters in I believe the late 90s.
Mr. Atoms, I just wanted to say thank you & you're talented crew of animators, directors, writers, voice actors, and storyboard artist for creating one of Cartoon Network's funniest & darkest shows.
To be honest, this is easily in my top 10 cartoons ever. It really impacted me. I even played their Nintendo Wii Smash parody game, it was actually really well made for a cartoon game. Let alone a fighting game. Very faithful to the show. Mandy's ultimate was her smiling...very accurate.

9:22 c’mon, you know you wanna play the Clone High sound bite - “Nothing bad ever happens to the Kennedys!”
7:20 that is LITERALLY the activation sound for the spider reflexes in the Spider-Man 2 game
That's exactly what kept to mind when I was editing
18:33 pretty sure Dexter’s Laboratory: Ego Trip (1999) started this trend
Billy and Mandy: The CN show along with Ed Edd N Eddy my Mom didn't really like me watching(which in Billy and Mandy's case I could totally understand)
Thankfully, this show never came on when my mom came in the living room (same with Courage), otherwise I wouldn’t have been allowed to watch either
My dad hated cow and chicken and ed edd and eddy but he still allowed me to watch it. Believe it or not he loved the powerpuff girls, dexter lab, and johnny bravo.
Honestly both shows helped me grow into the person I am today, both senses of humor are still stuck with me
My mom literally banned me from watching the very last episode of Ed Edd n Eddy cause it was "poisoning my impressionable mind"
Little did she know I discovered the magic that was pirating sites at the time lmao
My mom hated Ed Edd n Eddy and didnt like me watching it but she LOVED Billy and Mandy so much and Courage too. Something about that is funny to me.
7:40 one of my favorites from the series, "The Halls of Time" (SPOILERS)
ends this way.
Everywhere I go...I see his face
22:48, I really loved that guy in the episode where mandy smiles and he yells something like "You fools! have changed the order things are meant to be!!!!"
Kinda surprised you didn't go more in depth about Maxwell's short film. Mandy was even more unnerving there than the actual series, imo.
17:23 I loved Fred Fred Burger but this statement is so true. Those were the years where I stopped watching cartoons and moved on to the internet.
I miss those kind of executives who saw a drawing of the grim reaper and said "hey, let's give it a show".
18:39 where's Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip in which this had a go back in time and save the future plot!
4:16-4:38 Grey Delisle has voiced too many of my childhood crushes and Major Dr Ghastly was one of them!
Yo Pan,
What about that one episode, “Tickle me Mandy”, where Billy ask Grim to create a fake Mandy while the real one is away.
That dream sequence really scared the hell outta me when I was young!
Never again will I recover from that lol
That episode is still pretty creepy
The ugly/realistic close up of Billy's face is something I will never forget from that scene.
DETROIT
DETROIT
DETROIT
that face looks more funny then scary to me now even though i was traumatized by it when i was 10
11:54 for anyone wondering
It’s actually Christine by Steven king, which was actually based off real events
4:58 The boing sound effect happened the same time one of the soldiers smiled. It's common in Billy & Mandy.
I really enjoyed this show. My only complaint was Grim was always depicted as a total bitch. It wouldn't have hurt to give him his moments.
@wwemusicfanC I agree, they were usually out of view of the kids. The best were when he had the chance to get rid of them but he stood up for them
@@facundotorres175 "7 little 8 little 9 headless huggy bears! And I've still got a million to go!" He was having ever so much fun that episode
@wwemusicfanC I can't remember them. But I can remember stuff like the bully beating him up.
@@SpaceRodan didn't the after credit scene have saying, " I haven't had that much fun since the French revolution "
21:28 How in the HELL did they get away with that?!
This is one of my childhood favourite CN shows, alonng with Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy, The Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter's Laboratory, Foster's Home and Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi
5:35 this was one of the first milestones of my descension to the fetish hell
The visual at 11:04 reminded me of all those Boomerang bumpers with the toy models
Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy was my favorite cartoon of the 2000's, with it's wackiness, gross out jokes, and dark humor, it's the one I watched the most during my teen years.
I know tons of people must’ve already said this, but, this was my childhood, man. It’s such a fun show, even to this day, I still find it creative.
Billy and Mandy is such a masterpiece. Wish we lived in a world where Underfist would continue as a tv series.
The title card music (both of them) are ear worms and I won’t lie, this was one of my go-to shows whenever CN was on as a kid.
Hearing both title cards and ending theme after all these years hit me with a fat wave of nostalgia. Being a kid was so much simpler.
I like how a month after this video was made, Aurelio Voltaire mentioned RebelTaxi in one of his concerts.
I used to watch billy & mandy with my mom and it was always hilarious to see her grossed out by billy and horrified by mandy.
Imagine taking a taxi and the driver just starts talking about the history of Billy and Mandy
Now I realize how much Dracula in this show was inspired by Redd Foxx from Sanford & Son.
*SCRAPE AND LICK!*
Also Blacula, the 1970's grindhouse film of a black dracula.
i can totally tell it's Bob Camp's style when i see this one at 5:30
One joke from Evil Con Carne I will never forget is Skarr saying he bought 6 starving huskies and then Hector says he only sees 5 huskies then Skarr says they're no longer starving
Also in episode of Billy & Mandy Toadblatt and Squidhat get married and kiss gay rights
I now realize that was probably the first gay kiss in an American cartoon.
21:27 never before have i seen such amazing synchrony between the commentary and the background footage
Thanks for the retrospective, RebelTaxi! I love you more than pie! Happy Halloween!
A friend of mine who did Clean up art for Mighty Magi Swords worked with Greenblat on and with Maxwell Adams on his kickstarter puppet show thing, he didn't say much about that experience but he told me some neat things about Greenblat and the stuff he's working on which I cant go into for confidentiality reasons.
Huh, I actually didnt know that Dial M For Monkey was a separate show, I always thought it was, like, a segment for Dexter or something.
