They abused their power and used my content regardless of what I asked them to do - ignoring my requests. I'm making this video to let anyone know who is considering working with them in the future to simply be aware of what can occur.

Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

In the future you should word such requests starting with: "You do not have my permission unless..."
So I'm not going to lie, I was one of those people who was like "wtf why would she choose to do this?" the first time I heard about you. But I sought out your channel to hear your entire story because I knew there was more to it. I stayed because you're amazing and I wanted to make sure you were okay as you went about your recovery. I'm so glad I found your channel honestly, you've given me courage and strength to step out of my comfort zone and move forward with my life.

As someone who knows Jo, I can confirm that her ankle was DEAD, and nothing was going to make it better.. It was uncomfortable to watch her deal with chronic pain. I'm happy the foot is gone, despite the complications she's endured. Nowhere to go but up, now.
@@jeffpearsall32 yeah I've been here since right after that first surgery or just before? I just remember hearing about someone CHOOSING to become an amputee and thinking "oh, she's another one of THOSE but let's hear what she's got to say." And then finding out she wasn't one of those people. So with this new wave of hateful people coming out of the woodwork there will be a few who take the time to learn more and realize (like I did) that things aren't always as they appear.
This is kinda like when I get people that wanted me to crochet stuff for them. they say oh I'll put it on instagram or facebook instead of paying you...

I've always wondered how LADbible worked! I've always watched the videos and been like: "Ok but this isn't the actual video, and clearly there is an actual video... where's the real video? How do I watch that??" ALWAYS. I feel like I don't want to ever watch their videos now.

Jo, you should read up on copyright law. You have rights, you can rescind permission to use your copyrighted material.

They didnt agree to your terms, as far as I know you can report it to facebook and have it taken down
Years ago there were issues with straight up freebooters (of other channels, fwiw) on Facebook, and reporting them did nothing. Facebook just doesn't care about this sort of thing if it's generating profit, unfortunately.

Its hard not to pay attention to the ones that get to me...they stand out, and are sometimes hard to ignore. My husband has suggested placing something in the background that has your UA-cam name on it when you make videos (or watermark) to force the link to your content.
Also as this is intellectual property you can have this taken down and you can actually request monetery compensation as they posted prior to finalising information and breaking your contract.
Though I'm unsure how well that would work over there.
You now have problems you never thought you would face. Problems the average "Jo" (yes, pun intended) would never face. I hope this works out for you in the end. Here's hoping this video goes viral.

I had the exact same issue with a platform called ‘Love What Matters’, they didn’t listen to my requests when I gave them permission to use my story. They have multi millions of followers on Facebook and instagram, but they ignored me after I gave them permission. Never replied to me when I had issues with what they posted. :/
I notice you kept saying "ask" and "request." Was you being credited in the description part of the legal paperwork you signed when you gave LADBible usage of your IP? If so, sue. If not, you're SOL here. People and organizations don't have to honor requests, just contracts and laws.

@@nessbailey7931 The forms are to give (in this case) LADbible the right to posting that video, and unless her contract explicitly stated the credit she wanted, they don't legally have to honor her requests, as they already technically had the copyright on the video proper. It's like t-shirt companies buying designs from Tumblr or DeviantArt because the ToS state that the art posted belongs to the website, and they are legally allowed to do that bc the ToS signs away your right to it.

In this case, it was written in an email, and they still have to adhere to that.
But in any case, she isn't talking about legal stuff here, her main point was that LADBible was being immoral.

I'm confused a bit, and I would love for you to clarify. Did you fill out and submit the release form?
If you did, what they did was dodgy and rude but, unfortunately, legal. It's like buying a car: if you want the dealer to throw in something extra, you don't sign the papers until the thing you want is included.
On the other hand, if you just said you will submit the form but did not submit it (because they did not agree to your terms), then you can complain to Facebook about your content being used without permission.
Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking. If you say "I will buy the car once you do this and this" you are essentially requiring them to show proof of repairs before you sign. But if you sign and then say "Hey is the timing belt new?" they aren't really required to tell the truth let alone actually fix it.
The way she explained it they did not get her permission because they only had permission to do the video if they did the description to credit her. and they didn't. she should have and could have filed a DMCA (which are honestly not that hard to get).

@@catdragonrose2155 That's debatable. It depends how it's worded and if there was any official paperwork. It seemed to me like she said "Yeah you can use it, that's fine. Could you credit me in the description rather than a comment?" By wording it that way you are saying that it's fine to use the footage, then you are asking nicely how you want to be credited. If your job said you could have a day off but asked you to thank your coworker who replaced you the next day, would you consider it reasonable to be fired if you didn't thank them? No, but if your job said "You can take the day off if you come in early tomorrow," you would probably consider it reasonable to be fired if you didn't show up early.
I'm not saying it's cool or fair. I'm just paranoid and I am willing to be a dick to make sure I don't get screwed over. A giant multimillion dollar company is the most likely entity on earth to screw you over. I would have just straight up said NO based on those analytics she showed us. And I expect they might do it anyway
Yes. It seems from the emails that she signed the release form and then asked the question. It sucks for her, but it is definitely legal if this is the case. LADbible didn’t do anything wrong. They got her permission and then denied her request, perfectIy legitimate. I mean I am not saying she shouldn’t be upset. She misunderstood what she was doing by sending over the papers with the request instead of saying only if you do this will I give you permission. It’s an unfortunate mistake for Jo. I would treat this as a learning experience for next time. There is value in that.

This last year my channel got picked up twice by two separate local TV stations. But at least with me, they featured, and linked my channel directly from thier respective websites.
So at least there are some decent journalists out there.

They can't use your content without your permission.
Your permission was given conditionally.
They did NOT abide by your conditions
therefore they did NOT receive your permission.

Nope, she signed the agreement, THEN made a post-hoc request. They only have to comply with the signed contract.
I would seek the advice of an attorney.... not for money but to revoke their privilege/rights to use your content when they clearly didn't uphold your stipulations.

I went to ladbible just to see what it was like...and they don't put links in the description / title but for a very very few . (and I don't know why those few articles DO have links?) I DID see that most links are put in the top comments for almost everyone so if someone really wants to check a link out, they can...but I don't think we, as a reader, should have to dig for the info in an article. It should be right up top like any good journalism is. Fact and info in the first three sentences. Then the story. In any case, I understand why you are upset, I would be as well. I hope that this doesn't ruin your Christmas cheer...I stand with you and I agree and know that people should do the right thing...not the easy thing. Hugs.

I worked for this garbage company. Calling it a company is almost a joke. I witnessed what you discussed almost daily. It was a year ago I worked for them but it's still fun to talk about how bad they are. They act like they're changing the world and they care but they don't and it's all for clicks, which I get but it's trash content which they recycle from other sources, they rarely credit. I like your video on this!!

I know that I comment late but. that comments on that video and this video, on every video you have done. Don't think about them you are best and they just probably just had a bad day or they are just a bad person
It may not be on the same level as other issues right now, but it is something that is affecting you directly and I agree with you, ladbible should have done it right, it's not going to take away anything from them....
Have you ever considered not reading the comments? I am a huge Joe Rogan fan and that is one of the pieces of advice he gives to people starting UA-cam channels. He rarely reads the comments on his social media channels. People are jerks and nobody needs that negativity.
Hey Kara! Excellent thought and question - I appreciate you bringing that up! For the record, I'm a huge fan of Joe Rogan. My answer is yes and no - there are a few videos I no longer read comments on (the huge ones) except in very specific circumstances.
On my normal channel videos, I read every comment, reply to as many as I can. Most of the "bad" ones don't bother me, and I've had quite a few really productive conversations in comment sections that started out as "hate" comments and led to helpful conversations where I was able to provide some insight/education/etc. I think I'll always read comments (at least to some extent) just because I think it is really important to stay connected to my community here - and 95% of them are beautiful, caring, sharing of stories, etc. But the mean ones are challenging on hard days, and I'm still working on the best way to balance that. 😉
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time I've heard and seen them post uncredited or poorly credited content. It sucks because sometimes a friend will share something from them and I WANT to see more from that person, but sifting through the comments and trying to follow their link is a 50/50 if it works or not. They're more focused on generating profit and have been for years now, it's awful and frustrating for the viewers of people who get screwed over, I can't imagine how annoying it must be as a creator!
I had no idea that LADBible was such a big organisation, I thought they were some random meme page. I knew of them after they posted a fat-shaming meme of an actor that had gained weight while going through a massive depressive episode. I have absolutely no respect for them. What the frick?

First, I'm truly sorry that some people have the complete lack of common sense and intelligence to make such terrible comments. No one deserves to be treated like that. I've run across some of the LADBible videos but was unaware of how they operated. For ANY company to operate like this is unacceptable! I have no idea how you can get this situation fixed, but I do hope that people who see this video will boycott any of the videos they come across. I know that I certainly will.
Honestly media platforms never treat the people they’re writing about with any real level of respect. Similar happened to me in newspapers, all around awful experience, with people profiting off my story and my experiences but giving absolutely nothing back. They managed to make my health story reflect my gender (which isn’t relevant at all to the piece) and then just left their comments sections to it. They set me up for that by calling me a man when I’m not, nor have I ever been one. Never again.

Besides proper credit, they should have given you a percentage. They are making a ton of money doing close to zero work.
Honestly I just wouldn't sign ANY licensing agreement that didn’t have your terms written into the contract from now on. Maybe it would work to just get their assurance by email that they will credit you properly before you sign the agreement. I'm not sure if an email would make any difference legally though. Honestly, if they aren't crediting you properly idk if it's even worth it. I mean I guess it spreads awareness, which is part of the goal of your work, but you deserve to be paid for your work.

I agree that you should reach out to Facebook and get their video taken down. Maybe even reach out to the person's, who did the video, boss. Who knows if what they did is against the rules within the company.

I tried to find the LADbible video they did to link this video to it but it seems it has been taken down. This is so wrong in so many levels. I think creators should be paid for the rights to use their content and credit should be shown on the video and description. Exposer doesn’t pay the bills!
I mean yeah, LADBible fulfilling your request would have been kind, but you had already signed away the rights. (Or at least that’s what your email screenshots appear to reveal.) And if they had no legal reason to credit you in the way you wanted, and also that would negatively affect their traffic, there’s no real reason they would oblige.

I know I’m late to the party in terms of watching this and commenting, but… Admittedly my first thought is to wonder why she filled out the form for them before getting their confirmation that they’d follow her specific request. I’m not sure how things would’ve gone if she had, but it does seem like they were going to be honest that they wouldn’t accommodate her request. I’m not saying I think they were in the right in any way, their actions show very little respect for the fact that Jo is a creator with her own platform, but it does seem to me like Jo giving them the filled-out form and making the request is like an artist signing away rights to their music but making the business executive pinkie swear that they’ll still have a say in its use. (Not sure I’m putting this well… Maybe I’ve watched ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ one too many times. 😅) To summarize, it seems morally wrong to me, but not legally wrong. Perhaps I’m missing some element?

god i hate ignorant comments like your foot looks fine. Yeah mine looked like hers also but it was not fine. People are just horrible they just assume you are doing it for attention or something must be wrong with you to want to amputate your foot. They have no idea what she has been thru and what she is suffering.
I honestly really appreciate your word here, Jay...I'll be honest, of all the things people say, that's probably the one thing that still gets a rise out of me sometimes. Its so bizarre to me that people literally thing I would CUT OFF A BODY PART...for..."attention"? It makes no sense to me. I think it speaks hugely about the culture we live in and how much weight we put on social media attention (when in reality, its fun, but it is so inconsequential when it comes to the grand scheme of real life and mental health, etc.). Its frustrating when people think they know your complicated medical history from looking at a few seconds of a video and make statements based on that.
