For me, his genius shows up by making quite comprehensive fill-ins, totally logical and reproducible, but in relation to a very difficult point of the meter he is moving in, in a displaced or polyrhythmic relation and this makes it so hard to understand sometimes.....in difference to Vinnie or this crazy fast gospel guys, where the fill-ins are in priori in a weird grouping, deadly fast or with a crazy orchestration.......
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer I like Thomas Lang too, but how did Thomas Lang get brought into the discussion? You are creating a contest out something that has no real victor. Of course Thomas Lang is a beast, nobody has disputed that. He also might have better technical chops, but Gavin Harrison has a distinctive nuance, touch and style that can only be played by Gavin Harrison...Just like every other great drummer. There's much more than technical skill alone that goes into what makes people gravitate towards liking any one drummer over another, which of course is the art of it. Nothing that was discussed above takes anything away from Thomas Lang's skill, but you have to admit that Gavin Harrison is also a great player with a totally different style than Thomas Lang. They are both amazing drummers for different reasons. As an example, I do not believe that Thomas Lang would be as great of a fit for King Crimson. Gavin Harrison was made for that role. However, in my opinion, Thomas Lang is a much better clinician drummer...simply amazing in that role. Drumming is an art form first, so we have to learn to appreciate all of the different aspects that each drummer brings to the table so that we can learn from them and improve our own drumming.
Man, I dig your channel. I appreciate your breakdowns of the playing of so many of my favorite drummers. I'm learning a ton about how the greats phrase their licks from you. Love what you're doing Keep it up, brother! Much peace & love....God bless!
Take notice at 2:52...16th notes...left hand playing S, 10", 8" (up the kit) and right hand playing S, 10", 12", 15", 18" (down the kit). Looks simple, crazy independence right there.
Along with the click I would imagine Gavin and the band also have various verbal counts to bring them in and out of the solo sections. One of my favourite performances by a brilliant drummer.
THANK YOU SO MUCH !!! YOU ANSWERED A QUESTION I HAVE HAD SINCE "RELAYER" came out in the late 70's !! I NEVER knew thats what Alan White did!!! thank you thank you thank you!! I had totally forgot about that inquiry i had many moons ago until you just brought it up!! Talk about a mind blower (no pun intended)
GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE this dude. What an inspiration!!!

(Aka, Smarty the Pants) MAN, he is just one of the most appealing, tasty drummers of all time. When Gavin plays you just know it's time to pipe down and listen. Thank you as always, Garey. Love all your takes.
Recently saw him review the Sonar kits. He asked them to make a special double covered drum with an air pressure foot pedal. Acts like a Wow Wow pedal. Amazing sounds he can come up with. Must be why he is in demand with The Pineapple Thief and King Crimson.
If people earn living teaching drums think he is a brilliant.. Glad i'm not the only one who is absolutely stunned with Gavin's performances, ability to formulate important concepts and explain them.
Gavin is definitely one of the best, and is "Mr. Metronome". But he IS playing along to a click for this performance. If you notice, Paul Shaffer is also listening intently to the click, and is using vocal cues (on the click) to help him count the band in on the little instrumental fills. I attended one of Gavin's clinics, and he told us that Porcupine Tree uses clicks with cues all the time.
Hey Garey. I love this guy too. I think he really flies under the radar in the drumming world. His facility is unreal and he appears to such a personable guy. Thanks for this one. What year was this done on "Letterman"?
The man is a beast. He can drive a bigband too. Look at neil peart, great drummer, but stiff in Buddy Rich tribute band. Would love to see Gavin doing a piece with the BR bigband.
I'm a drummer too, the first time i saw the original video i started to beat the tempo with my foot when gavin starts the solo. While i was watching this video i started to do the same untill i heard Garey Williams was beating the tempo too, lol.
I was waiting long ago for this video, thank you for making it! I will like to point out that around 3:20 he drops a stick and then just go all in against the ride XD I highly recommend to anyone interested to check his drum solo on the Meltdown: Live in Mexico DVD of King Crimson at the end of 21st Century Schizoid Man. It's fantastic
Beyond belief is the ideal characterization, Garey. The other drummer that plays "The Chicken" with absolute musical mastery and a barrage of precision chops is none other than Dave Weckl.
How about a big hats off to David Letternan's love of music to allow performances like this on live tv. As for Gavin? GOAT! (at least in the upper echelons). Dynamics, chops, clean attack, pocket. What else is there?
I'm just a guitarist and realise that I am here to be played over.....Hahahahahahaha, but I've been loving your videos for a little while now. I love your enthusiasm and the fact that, like Richard Hawkings, I think i understand it while you're actually explaining it. For an age my fantasy band drummer has been Little Feat's Richie Hayward. Am I crazy and what chance a reaction video with him? Whether or no, keep up the great work
@@DrumsetArtistry I didn't really have anything specific in mind but here he is for your delight anyway :-) ua-cam.com/video/o-r-qi_cJs0/v-deo.html Later he seemed to get a bit more 'Omar Hakim' hi-hat-wise but he is sadly underrepresented on youtube at all stages in his career. I really wondered if you had any thoughts on him generally but if you don't know him I guess it would be foolish for you to have :-)
Hey! Just a suggestion, don't use those headphones to record your videos. The microphone was rubbing up against your shirt and making a lot of noise. Interesting reactions, keep it up!!
There are a hundred drummers I like love to listen to, but I really think Gavin is my favorite. Always tasteful, and he always has his kit miced so well. Sounds great. I mean, come on, dude made an awesome song on his kitchen sink. ua-cam.com/video/9hdxYW2YODE/v-deo.html Reminds me of me and my college band buddies just jamming out at parties on whatever we could find in the kitchen. One guy on coffee mug, one on car keys, one on bar stool, etc.
Wow, somehow your channel came up in my YT recommendations and I’m glad it did! Just been binge watching some of your ‘reaction’ videos and find them pretty fascinating (all be it, quite over my head musically). As I was scrolling thru your videos, either I missed it or found one glaring omission OR, perhaps he was just too sloppy and not worthy of note? I’d be curious about your reaction to Keith Moon. Great vids and subbing. Thanks!
Very nice! I recommend you to react to Paulina from the Mexican band the warning. She sings while she plays in many songs, she composes very good stuff and epic lyrics. She's only 18, her sisters are badass too. You will be amazed (:
@@DrumsetArtistry sure. This one is from like 3 years ago, they were 17, 15 and 12. Gavin is definitely one of the best drummer out there! His drum fills are just crazy

His solo live performance of Anesthetize is amazing
it's out of this world good.
That performance is so next level amazing. What a band
Gavin's work with Porcupine Tree got me hooked being that I'm a guitar player .. his fills are SO MUSICAL.
When I heard “Futile” the first time I just knew he had to work with Fripp
Saw Gavin do a drum clinic a few years ago the guy is absolutely amazing
WhoDarestheMAN gamer fair shout 👍🏻
Hey Gary! I’m not a drummer but I really enjoy watching this kind of stuff. The way you analize is great. Cheers!
His work with King Crimson is amazing.
If you guys didn't notice, he dropped his stick and made a quick recovery at 3:22, insane!
I think I'm more impressed by this guy's ability to pick up what Gavin does as he does it. Super impressed
Love Gavin's work... And that was a really good informed analysis of it. Thanks Garey
My first time hearing/seeing Gavin was years ago in a video where he did nothing but a solo on 2 base drums. It was utterly amazing.
His sound is also always amasing!

Gavin's flams is to die for :D. Among all of the other things to like about his playing.
He's in The Pineapple Thief now, new single, and a new album soon.
This segment in Letterman was gold! Check out at least Dennis Chambers from the series!

Hey man, how about one on Clive Bunker ?
Three words, "Second to none".
Can you please check and react to "Anesthetize" drumming of Gavin ?

As a non-drummer agavinnis the only drummer that makes me glistening to the drums rather than the whole...
Teacher can you do the "paradiddle challenge" ? :)
Into what book were you referring to?
Rhythmic Illusions
I am not so clear on the rhythmic displacement concept.
Fun fact: Gavin drops his stick and recovers it during this solo.
Not a single mistake.... 😮
React to Nick’D Virgilio please, he has some good drum solos out there.
