Dale Jr. Download: Damn Yellow Line Rule

- The discussion got pretty intense as Dale Jr. laid down his real feelings about the yellow-line-rule that dominated the headlines after a crazy weekend at Talladega. Dale, Mike, and producer Matthew Dillner give their opinions as to why NASCAR may want to re-think the out-of-bounds infraction.

Just make Dale the NASCAR president already
Lol they won't be handing over real money decisions to the drivers or teams lmao. It's strictly a non driver, non team members area and will remain as such.
I was never a big Junior fan when he was racing (didn't dislike him either) but I think the man should be running NASCAR. They'd be doing much better off with someone like Earnhardt Jr. making the calls. He understands the sport has moved forward but also knows where and when to keep the tradition.
Same here, it's not him, it's his fans that annoyed me
I'm a fan of 10-wide on the last lap!
"You're in trouble Brian Vickers, your ass is going around" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 19:55
Dale Jr needs an executive role at NASCAR. He brings so much knowledge and experience. He knows what a majority of the fans want and he has ideas how to achieve those fan experiences. If NASCAR would give him a position he could probably bring in viewers in droves.
Its bc he's not only a past competitor, and a team owner, he's also a huge fan and genuinely loves this sport
"Turned his ass and wrecked the whole field" that needs to be put on a t-shirt. love it !
Yes, great on a shirt, sticker
At 24:00 Jr says "everybody go back and watch the end of that race".. some of us missed it because we set our DVR to record an hour and a half after the scheduled stop of the race in case it does go long only for the network to switch it to another channel to let f'n local news broadcast.
I'm sure you can find it on youtube by now...
@@JohnnyUtah13 I've seen it. I just was making a point that he didn't talk about the switch, which I don't expect him to.
OMG, I was cussing, and screaming WTF!!
They didn’t even give us a warning, but thankfully I was live, the caution took forever, and was able to switch channels..
It’s been screwing up on my NHRA drag racing, i record. Ugh 🤦🏻♂️
I'm more pissed over NBC changing channels with a few laps left in the race than I am about the yellow line rule,
Would have given you 1000 thumbs up if I could
I remember Jr was talking about this last year. Just drop it, NASCAR. We don’t need this rule anymore.
Also NBC cutting the race off for news, ruined the end of the race for a lot of viewers . The yellow line rule sucks!
Didn’t say bye or nun
Nobody was "forced" below the line. To quote the Great Ken Schrader, "There are 3 pedals in a race car.... "
100% agree!! The biggest bs ever! You can't force them below the line when they have the option to brake! So, you don't have to brake, just go below the line and win!
@Shullin 😂😂
Damn jr cussed a lot he's pissed
I miss dale as a driver but watchin him talk about this rules crap! Is freaking funny😂😂
Me to! I almost enjoy him calling races more,,, we get to hear candid opinions rather than cookie cutter sponsor junk.
If Hamlin won that race, then NASCAR needs to give back to Regan Smith the win they stole from him in 2008.
And Justin Haley his win in 2018
Kenny Wallaces 5th place from 2002
@Jeffrey In my head Regan won that race even if the 20 was in victory circle ✌️
This is a great discussion! I love Dale's passion for NASCAR to be a great product.
Until the Reagan Smith/Tony Stewart incident, I thought on the last lap, the yellow line rule was void. I still think that should be the case. As soon as they take the white flag for the last lap, the yellow line becomes void. On the last lap, pass anywhere you can. But that's just me.
Unpolitically correct Junebug is a national treasure 😂😂
I'm more upset about the race not finishing on the same channel it started.
Jr is honest and sincere and tells it like it is about NASCAR rules. Always was honest.
Your channel pop up on my UA-cam I watch one show and now I been binge-watching your shows it's really awesome to hear the old time drivers talk about the old days. I was always a big fan of you and your dad.
Thank you for letting me know that they took Chase's penalty back. I had not heard that. Should have never penalized in the first place. GET RID OF THE YELLOW LINE RULE! NASCAR should not be making such subjective calls.
Jr for President of NASCAR!!
Don't enforce the yellow line rule for the last mile of the race. Coming off the backstretch on the final lap anything goes!
I agree the yellow line rule needs to go! The no locking bumpers rule in Xfinity and and Gander Trucks needs to go too. These are professional racers and they need to police themselves on rules of this nature
The man said it on national television, come on NASCAR fix it!
Last lap of the '79 Daytona 500...
Great times, and one of the main reasons I became a NASCAR fan that day.
Bring back NASCAR!
Dale needs to be Director of Competition for NASCAR
Hearing Dale talk about infamous Super Speedway moments he was involved in is super interesting
Talladega was great in terms of racing, it was the yellow line that caused all this uproar... If we just get rid of the yellow line rule, we wouldn’t be having these controversies! I know it’s supposed to keep driver “safe”, but drivers need to start policing themselves so they don’t do these mistakes NASCAR is concerned with. This is the top series and talent in stock car racing! Let them race and police themselves!
Do you agree with me that Denny went below the double yellow line to avoid William Byron and Matt Dibenedetto almost wreck?
@@kjprodouctions9050 no
@@hunterpro_1 I wasn't talking to you
@@kjprodouctions9050 didnt say you were, just that you are wrong.
@@hunterpro_1 Oh sorry. We both have different opinions. So I respect yours despite my disagreement towards it
whatching this a year later and it still fires me up, i swear if any bafoonary happens at dega next month i will be livid
Without the yellow line rule we would be talking about what a great finish it was. It’s not a good thing for NASCAR having rules always being the topic of discussion. Let em race!
The drivers aren't ALLOWED to police themselves anymore, back in the day, you did something stupid, Dale Sr. Rusty, Jeff Burton ect, would come see you after the race, and let you know you messed up, NOW, if the drivers get too confrontational, they go to the hauler. I miss the NASCAR of old, when driver COULD police themselves.
Until they lose a win for a last corner spin.
When I watched it live, I was like holy crap this is amazing. Then they mentioned the yellow line and I'm like omg this will ruin this great finish. And it did, it tarnished a great finish.
Damn.... just plant grass up to the yellow line or put a wall up to the line
I agree. You never see no one pass on the outside of the wall at the top of the track. NASCAR is just trying create controversy
Rules are boring, racing is exciting 👍
Jr is right races would be a lot more exciting without the yellow line headache
My biggest disappointment was Nascar did not penalize Denny for gaining multiple positions below the yellow line!
Dale Jr. from Mammaw to knuckle-sandwich, we are one in hillbilly spirit, my long lost cousin and possibly uncle? Love you brother, keep the Dirty-MoJo Goin’
I vote this panel to lead NASCAR into the future instead of the idiots that are in charge now!!
They could do what iracing does and allow drivers to go below the line but if they cause an accident its automatically their fault and suspensions/warnings follow
Mike's wrong about NASCAR being the only sport with judgement calls. ALL sports do. In baseball, no two umpires call the same strike zone, even though the rule is pretty clearly stated in the rulebook. In football, no two refs have the same idea of what pass interference is. In basketball, you can beat the crap out of a rookie but can't even look at a superstar without getting called for a foul. The problem with ALL of these examples (and many others), as well as NASCAR, is the fact that these judgement calls are never called consistently...even by the same official from time to time. If a rule isn't working and all it does is piss everybody off no matter how it's called, well, that rule needs to be rewritten or done away with altogether.
That's the truth the calls just gotta be consistent the players or drivers will play or drive accordingly
Here's the thing, Nascar doesn't NEED judgement calls.
Baseball and football do.
That's why I like racing, you cross the line first you win, it is set in stone.
The only rules should be hard rules, there's no judgement call on a cheating car, either there was a rule against it or not, no judgement call in speeding on pit road, either you were over the limit or not.
@@hunterpro_1 agreed.
Good points made
No judgement call this is a black and white rule that has been in effect for 15 years
Years
Hearing Dale be so open about that situation in the 500 with Vickers was honestly hilarious and eye opening. I’m sure many drivers have the exact same mentality in the moment out there and it goes to show you EXACTLY why the rule needs to go. At this point, it might even prevent crashes who knows.
If I had to present on this topic, I would just let Dale Jr do it for me...so much truth in this one segment. Also, the Vickers conversation cracked me up!
Absolutely spot on Jr totally agree with you on getting rid of the rule absolutely!!!
I agree, we are arguing over a lot of judgement calls, reduce those and get the racing back into the drivers hands. Let their action be what we talk about. If the rule is not cut and clear then remove them. I bet if we laid out all the rules and have a group of drivers and nascar and some knowledgeable fans review and work out things. We’ve lost our sport when rules became more important than racing
In the words of your father "it's racing! Do you want to race or don't you" racing requires taking risks. Nascar has wimpified racing just like the NFL and football.
I'm also scratching my head on the Push rule
Jr. talking about the 09' 500 about Vickers is a great callback. Keep in mind that was coming off the 08' Fall Talladega Controversy with Regan Smith where he got penalized for being forced below the line. That then resulted in this move, it certainly resulted in the wreck with Brad & Carl in the next Spring Dega race, it was pretty much drivers making sure they never get shoved below the double line.
I absolutely agree. I am surprised that Dale Jr did not brought up the Regan Smith 2008 controversy.
Just let the damn drivers drive! They will work out their problems with each other
I think this is the easiest way to look at this.. NASCAR makes NO rules about a driver getting up in the marbles.. Why?.. Because it usually comes with its own consequences..
The same is true for the apron.. For every perceived advantage a driver might get momentarily, there's a price to pay in terms of momentum and getting back up on the track..
JUST as many wrecks are caused by drivers trying to get a momentum advantage by running too high and there's not a SINGLE rule about that...
Eliminate the yellow line and let the natural consequences play out..
Carl Bamburg Yeah, like Earnhardt Sr. getting killed. Great idea.
@@tmcorey1 What the hell are you talking about dude?.. You should probably get your facts straight..
First, there WASN'T a yellow line rule in place at that race.. Secondly, if there HAD been, NO ONE was below it or out of shape around DE.. And finally, it's fairly common knowledge the Dale Earnhardt's death had to do with the quality of his restraints.. NOT some other driver being out of shape or down on the apron...
If you're going to comment on this thread, at LEAST know what you're talking about...
Carl Bamburg Wow, are you ever a fucking moron. Were you there? I was. Do you possess a complete copy of the accident investigation? I do. Fact: The rule was not in place during that race in 2001, but was initiated at super speedways before they went to Talladega because of sterling going BELOW THE YELLOW LINE and bumping Earnhardt. He was killed because he was bumped in a corner and hit a cement wall at over 150mph. The yellow line rule, the installation of the safer barriers, the mandate of head and neck restraints, the mandate of full faced helmets, mandate of seat designs and placement with the car, and the complete re-engineering of the cars being used today were all byproducts of that needless tragedy. So take your idiotic “seat belt” bullshit and shove it.
"We're struggling to keep our fanbase and create new fans. What should we do?"
"We should make things more complicated! Like unnecessary rules and an ever changing playoff format!"
"That's a GREAT idea!"
Listening to this video as I look out my back windshield of my car with the words 11 sucks smeared on it from where I was at the race Sunday😂😂😂
I agree the yellow line rule has created more drama than anything. Get rid of it
I couldn't agree with Dale Jr more! Just get rid of the rule and it will sort itself out!
Nascar is penalizing the pitcher for foul balls as per this analogy. I couldn't agree more with the point being made.
One thing I've learned in 40+ years of going/watching races.
MORE RULES NEVER fixed anything!!!!
They're grown FREAKIN men doing this PROFESSIONALLY. Dump the yellow line, it'll police itself.
JR! Love how open you are to differing opinions. Sign of a confident man.
I've always said when they fathered in the yellow line, that it was just a way to police the drivers and since day one the calls from nascar have changed, not been consistently enforced, have created more wrecks, and took away from the real excitement of the race!It should be taken out of the picture for many reasons! On every occasion it has deflated the out come! That's right JR!
I remember a race that Carl Edwards block someone all the way down in to the infield on more than one occasion and no one said anything to him.
If it's asphalt it was meant for racing!
🤣 I think Mario Andretti said something like “If you don’t want us racing on it, don’t pave it!”
I love your passion over the rule change and I'm with you over the yellow line, you get forced down across the line and it's on you. Maybe one day you'll be setting Mike's chair in the hauler
I would be interested to hear Jr.'s opinion on what Brett Griffin proposed on DBC. The yellow line rules are all the same until 1 to go and then there's nothing for the yellow line. It's not a perfect solution, but it's simple, and it would cut down a lot of controversy.
6:20 "Everyone was making an argument basically for everyone who was on the lead lap." WHERE IS DW WHEN WE NEED HIM MOST?
Jr snapped lol
Cause he's right
Damn Dale! Your Daddy would be so proud! You hit it perfectly on the head. NASCAR has lost what made "it" , "it". For a lack of a better term, I call it, it's soul. Thank You! On a side note. Can you , like kinda go for President of NASCAR . I absolutely LOVE your ideas for this and bring the cars back towards what a consumer can buy. That is why it was called stock car racing after all. Those 2 things alone, would bring me back to racing. Thanks again! Great show by the way. I will have to look into the podcast.
Very lost in Sunday’s finish was the fact that all three races this weekend ended with a wreck in turn 3, all out of the way of the leaders.
Both races on Saturday they threw the yellow, both races ended in turn 3, ruining exciting races back to the start/finish line
Sunday, there was no yellow, and thus leading to the controversial move by Hamlin.
Let that sink in.
All NASCAR's rules are the primary reason that NASCAR is not as big now as it was in the 90s
I can solve this problem easily. Once the leader takes the white flag, then the yellow line rule is off the table. Meaning the drivers can go below the line to race for the checkered flag.
Only on the straightaways
Remove the yellow line and put in a yellow wall, They hit it, do you fine the driver who forced them to hit? Never happens when drivers bump each other into the outside wall. Denny chose to go down there stayed down until he passed everyone so they give him the win? What's up with that?
No one forced Hamlin down there. No one got a penalty for forcing him down there. He just went down there, completely breaking that rule and getting away with it.
Jr. Is dead on with yellow line rule. We should not walk away from a race going what just happened. We go and watch for entertainment not debate
I totally agree! It was the most exciting race this season! I also was aggravated at the outcome. Enjoy your podcasts, your great 👌😎💓❣️💕
The only thing they could do would be to
1. put grass up to the edge of the racing surface
2. Do what they did at pocono and add a inside wall up to the edge of the racing surface
3. Just save money and eliminate the rule
I agree with you jr. I've been a nascar fan since the 60 s and the one thing I hate is the inconsistency of nascar. They need to figure something out soon or their going to lose more fans
I just don't like how it's different every year, for years now we've been complaining that they penalized the guy who went below the line, and not the guy who forced him, except for one or two random races, and according to the way it's been for years, Denny went below the line and should have been penalized. I don't even think the line rule has to go away completely, just lessen it, there needs to be a line in the sand of what's racing for position in an intense situation, and what's a bonehead move and that's easier to call than trying to make a decision that's going to piss 50% of the fans off. Just take the rule away on the last lap on the back stretch, and once you get out of 4, problem solved, they're gonna wreck anyways what difference does it make if there is a damn good race to the finish and one of the cars goes 2 or 4 tires below the line to get there?
Need 🖊 📚 🖊 not ✏️ 📚 ✏️
Yep NASCAR and their controversial calls 👎
I didn't think Matty D forced anyone down below the yellow line, denny Hamlin was headed down there, Nascar stole a victory from Matty D and the 21 car
I am on the Nascar Fan Council, amd i have been begging....and pleading...please No More Rules...you hit it exactly right. This dilutes the excitement of why were all here....to enjoy the race. I hope Nascar is watching this because you guys have explained it perfectly.
simple. Change the rule to read 'except for the final 2 laps'
I think the bottom line is if you eliminate the rule, people might still argue about a finish but they won't be mad at the entirety of NASCAR. They will be arguing about a drivers conduct which is the way it should be. Get rid of the rule.
Jr is right ✌️
Hell I fall to sleep 😴 anymore watching the race you are right Dale I love your dad he made it excited to watch
“So I turned his a$$.............unfortunately it wrecked the field...” LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
NASCAR has different rules on depending who the driver is.
BS
Agreed.
manufacture also
Makes me think they are setting up Hamlin for the 2020 champ.
Rocky Asteria yep just like they did with Kyle Busch. Spoon tied champion
Absolutely
Lol he would easily make the next round without winning Dega.
Agreed. Also, guarantee that Bubba wins Daytona in 2021.
But why though?
5:18 TWENTY YEARS OF TRYING, TWENTY YEARS OF FRUSTRATION
I personally am so disgusted at the amount of penalties that were handed out to other drivers and the 11 drives 300 yards below the line and NASCAR keeps his win. This race almost broke me as far as watching races go.
You mean to tell me Matt dibenedetto didn't finish second that rule needs to be abolished that boy finished second all day long
I really liked what Dale said at the end about rewatching the ending of the race and acting like the yellow line rule doesn’t exist. While it won’t change the reality of what happened it definitely gives you a different perspective on what the outcome could’ve and probably should’ve been.
I still can't get over that 2008 dega finish. Regan Smith had that win straight up stolen from him. Also when you look at when they penalized Justin Haley at Daytona a few years ago; no yellow line rule and everyone is talking about how awesome a move he made to win that race but nope because 3-5 inches of his car was below the yellow line.
How is there a rule that you can't push someone below a line but there is no rule about pushing someone into a wall? Also, no one was penalized for forcing Denny below the line. So...how did Hamlin not get penalized?
The yellow line rule needs to go! Guys get forced or even just go down there for a potential wreck, now they have to drop out of the front pack and let off so they dont advance their position. I get the rule but it needs to go! Take a damn fan vote and see how that goes!
Jr..... You are the epitome of positivity 👍😎🏁.... We love your appreciation for the history of the sport ... ALL of the podcast are awesome.... Schrader , Larry Mac , Chocolate Myers .... Favorites are the ones that share stories bout your Dad 👍👍🏁🏁🏁
That race was like the latest presidential debate. Afterwards I shook my head and wondered, why did I just watch that. I watch fewer Nascar races now. Nascar has been trying to regain their viewers, the seats have been emptying before this virus. Putting more rules in place will not fix the sport. I don’t watch for the wrecks. I watch for the racing. The average person will never have anything like one of these cars. The kids wreck these cars because no one tells them no. Nascar has become a government that we have lost trust in, and the kids are out of control. It’s all not fun to watch anymore.
23:55 Watching it live I honestly didn’t even think about the rule until they started showing the replays of it. Probably one of the best finishes of the season outside of the yellow line controversy.
Mike: Vickers. I got other problems with Vickers.
Matthew: Get him in here!
Dale: No.
😂
I would like a group of former drivers make these judgement calls. They are the drivers, as a collective group they understand what's right and wrong rather than a rule book does
I was at Talladega spring race 2003. I recall there was big controversy when Jr drove the 8 below the line out of 4. He did in fact get to keep the win. Surprised he didn’t mention it
He did mention it in the video. He said people were still questioning the legitimacy of the win.
You didn't listen to the whole video. He literally mentions driving below the line to pass Kenseth and that people still debate that call today
He was forced down though unlike what Hamlin did
Denny Hamlin cross the yellow line and advanced his position end of story what part of no do you not understand.
Great discussion. I do believe in this sport and some others to many rules and to much control can ruin the spirit of the sport and excitement.
The rule made Jr. the bad guy when Vickers tried blocking his run at Daytona. Good 15 car pile up
If Denny has any sense of honor, he will quit JGR add a second car to his new team, for him to drive along side his new employee, and make sure that Matty D get his old ride at JGR.
yes because he totally has the money to just add a 2nd car lol
We always tout these drivers as the best in the world. So if one of them is stupid enough to try some bold move and ends up wrecking himself or the field, that's on him. I think it's about time that the drivers start policing themselves instead of having NASCAR do it for them. If someone wants to be bold and try something risky, they better be able to accept the consequences and own up to their actions. If we end up with less than half the field remaining before halfway in the race, then it's on the drivers to figure out what went wrong and fix it so we won't have that in future races.
It's been proven that more incidents occur with the yellow line rule than without it. All the rule has done in its near 20 years of existence is show how consistently inconsistent NASCAR is when it comes to the enforcement of its rules.
Me personally , keep the double yellow line untill the white flag lap then have at it.
Simple Nascar blew the race great race Hamlin drove a quarter lap under yellow lines. Period
Love seeing this side of Dale Jr.
