Humpy Wheeler to me is the most historic track owner in history and all of the stories I’ve ever heard are just legendary. The school bus story is my favorite pre-race stunt.
I'm not even a NASCAR fan, but I can't stop listening to guys like Humpy sharing their stories. I sold apparel for an arm of Earnhardt's company Sports Images back in the late 90's. With that, I was able to get garage and pit passes for certain races. My dad was a big gear head, loved ole #3 and I was able to take him to a couple of races at Dover with the all access passes. I never had a close relationship with my dad, we never shared the same interests in life. But for those couple of Sundays, we were never closer in our relationship. One cool moment was watching Dale walk through the garage area, surrounded by autograph seekers. He caught me and my pa watching his every step from the side, saw our 3 hats and must have seen the smile on my father's face...... and just gave a slight wink to my dad. For a couple years, I started watching all of the NASCAR races and yes, I became a huge #3 fan. Last race I watched was the crash in 01. RIP to a great man.
