    Brae I'm not a 16mm film guy, but the video has been enjoyable, instructive and interesting because of the DeVinci Resolve. Thanks as always. Cheers.

    Nice work bruh! ❤️ Got me dreaming more and more about 16mm… 😅
    As one of those colorist dudes, all I’ll add are two tips that you might appreciate! If you leave the conversion as the last LUT, and do all your brightness, sat, hdr etc in a node before the LUT-node you get all the latitude of the log image if you’re ever in a need to get back some detail. This will only double your node size, so it’s not that bad. 😂
    The other tip is to use gamma 2.4 instead of rec709(scene). It’s basically the same thing, just with more latitude and play in the color tab which always helps. Hit me up in the DMs if you have any questions!

      Thank you brother! I will definitely implement these tips, appreciate it 🤠

      Where would you put the gamma 2.4 setting?

    Loving the 16mm stuff lately. I’ve been wanting to tip into it for years. Seeing this content has been pushing me towards actually getting started. Keep it coming.

      Can’t recommend it enough! Even if it’s only a couple rolls per year

    Thanks for the video buddy.
    I have an advice, after you apply the lut, try to do all the exp, contrast, sat, etc, changes before that node, for example: Your lut node is the node number 3, then try to do all the changes in the node 2 and 1. You will have more control because you'll have working with the log fottage.
    Thanks for sharing your knowlegde♥

    This is an awesome video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’ve purchased my first 16mm film camera not long ago… excited to have fun and give it a try. Will definitely be watching your how to shoot 16mm video again 👍🏻

    with using the xdr displsay, its best to use the HDTV video reference mode, copied as a new preset and turn off the system gamma boost that the original ref has. This will then be correct for working in Rec709 and what you see is what you will get, once rendered.

    • @HowardPettit
      @HowardPettit Рік тому

      Oh and render to rec709a, otherwise the gamma tags are incorrect and the video will be washed out when uploaded

    1:00 maybe change the title to "How I color correct 16m film" to make it seem more personal like that
    that adjustment at 13:30 was satisfying :)

    This is a very creative use of ultra 16mm conversion. Instead of cropping you are keeping the full exposed negative with the perfs included which of course makes it seem even more like film. I don't know if most realize a normal 16mm camera will not expose between the perfs like your footage has.

    Awesome. So informative. I'm more interested in how you use Resolve in general, and this information and lesson is great. Hey, in case you don't post again this week, Merry Christmas to you, your girlfirend, your family and loved your ones! Cheers!

    Great video and presentation, I've been learning Resolve for my 16mm feature film and this helps tremendously. My associate discovered Nicholas Coyle as well, fantastic resource to have for us. A 6.5K transfer? That seems crazy but perhaps I need to look into it. Thanks for posting this!

    Awesome stuff man! Just curious on the shot with the goat and your cousin what is the red on the edges? Is that light leaks?

    • @BraeHunziker
      @BraeHunziker  9 місяців тому

      Yeah that roll came out of the packaging a little loose so the edges got exposed to some sunlight.

    badass ma man great work. I personally do actually prefer the LUT node completely separate in the last node, then create separate exposure/saturation/colorgrading nodes. That way when I apply that look to similar scenes I have the separate control for each and every clip since even though they may be in similar lighting they may need slight tweaks in exposure and contrast. But like you Im just a dude with a camera and a computer haha. Sick video cant wait to see more definitely.

    For purposes of setting up the Color Space Transform node, should you always assume that the Input Color Space should always be Cineon Log when you're working with film scans? I recently had some Super-8 and 16mm scans done, but I can't use Resolve Color Managed because there's no metadata in the files for Resolve to use. All of the footage was negative and was transferred in log, natch, but I still need to figure out how to configure the CST node at the end. The will be two separate outputs of Rec. 709 footage: one to UA-cam and the second to a 1080p Blu-Ray master.

    • @BraeHunziker
      @BraeHunziker  Рік тому

      Interesting, I am actually not sure about that. I’ve only used this LUT method to color correct film footage but I really like using CST otherwise. I will have to mess around with some settings and see what works best.

    Dude, awesome channel!! Man, I think it would simplify your life to just have a good color chart. It would help you get a very fast color balance and roughly place your histogram.

    How do you correct 8mm with a frame around the footage? Do you just mask out the footage so the frame stays the same all the time ?

    • @BraeHunziker
      @BraeHunziker  Рік тому +1

      You could do it that way, but I usually just correct the entire frame. I crop my super 8 footage quite a bit so not much of the outside border ends up getting seen.
