This was helpful, I called the lock locksmith and they told me they will come out make a new key instead of replacing the ignition. They came out gave me two keys and it worked perfectly. Awesome job, keep posting. Thanks
If you buy a new ignition do you have to get the ignition key and the door keys re-keyed? The new ignition set is $219 if you order from Toyota online and $314 if you go into the dealer. I just had this happen 2 days in a row. I've never had this issue with any of my other vehicles. I was able get it free but I now know it's just a matter of time. I put some graphite in the key hole and it's much smoother but of course it always work in my driveway. I'm ok buying a new ignition set, however, I will call a lock smith to see what they charge. Now days they have jacked the prices up on everything.
Just a suggestion before you start spending money and replacing parts, it's possible you may just have a worn out key. If you have a spare key try that first. I had this exact problem where my ignition cylindar wouldn't move, i was getting ready to order a new ignition cylinder when i ran across a spare key that came with my car when i bought it and had never used. It was obvious from comparing the 2 keys the one i used on a daily basis was significantly worn. Anyway when i tried the spare key it unlocked just like that.
Yep, that worked!! Took my hideaway key and turned the ignition while holding the current one (with the chip) next to it. Turnen n started just fine. Tomorrow I'm getting a new key made. Great share. I owe you a beer..or two.
Had exact issue with my 2006 tundra , they wanted $185.00 for the part , but I have a good relationship with my advisor , he cut e a new key using the VIN # , NOT OFF THE OLD KEY , issue solved , do yourself a favor and have a key made at the dealership using your VIN#
They did not charge me , mine is a 2006 , no fancy key , just a simple grind , the key is to have them make it from your serial number , not just duplicate the bad key

So, not about $200. You can get an OEM for around $80, a Beck-Arnley for $45 (Amazon) or a T-style for about $28 at Home Depot. If cash flow isn't an issue, I would go with the Beck-Arnley as they have great customer reviews and a year warranty.
After replacing the ignition lock and with new keys that comes with the new ignition lock, do you need to program it ? I saw videos of how to program new keys, but what about if you replace the ignition, how do you make the computer recognize the new key and ignition lock ?

I have a camry 2016, when it’s hot out the ignition goes on lock. Today we can’t get it to start no matter how much we try to turn the wheels. It has worked for 3 mos just turning the wheels gently to left or right. We have 2 keys and both keys are not worn at all. Do you think i have to replace the tumbler?
Would the key turn if you turned the steering wheel from side to side? My key is fine and it will turn in the cylinder if I turn the steering wheel back and forth. If I just get in and put the key in, it won't turn. Trying to figure out what's causing the issue: the ignition cylinder or what?

I highly recommend anyone that experiences these symptoms to replace asap. Because if you don't, and you wait till the last minute like me, the cylinder will lock so bad that you can't even turn your key to "Acc" mode to depress the button and remove the cylinder. So a 5 minute job turns into a much longer one. I had to drill mine out.
thanks randy, i did everything.... BUT... after i slid in the new cylinder, put the cover back on, screwed in the panel.... THE ENGINE WONT TURN OVER.... NEVER had that problem before, always started right up... now after putting in the new cylinder, it won't start! it'll turn all the way great, but now won't turn over.... why?
@@giovanni233 thanks. i ripped open the original stripped key, took out the computer chip, taped it right on top the new key, and added a new plastic key cover.... worked perfect... its not easy tearing off the original cover tho, be careful...
@@Skintback27 you have to make sure you're sticking the key THROUGH THAT CIRCULAR PIECE... when replacing the ignition key on your own, that circular green fragile plastic part, that has the wIres connected to it, is usually drifted to the side while you're trying to slide the new ignition key in... well, that RING, MUST BE PHYSCIALLY around the key entrance and the key HAS to be stuck THROUGH THE INSIDE of the ring for the engine to turn over... its a security auto-shut off feature... if someone steals your car key, and even makes a brand new copy, they still won't br able to get the engine to turn over because only the original key, and its interaction with that RING will get the car to actually start...
NOOOOOOO!!!! Toyota keys are notorious for wearing out - just replace with a new key at dealership (don't cut new key from old, worn out key!). Dealership doesn't want you to know this! Only $8, is cheap ;)

Btw what he means is drill out the little pin where you stick the needle into, that way it comes out regardless of whether the key is in ACC.

You gotta program the new key to the cars computer most likey as it's a new key.
