Imagine not only get rickrolled, but 4 times at once. Not only 4 times at once, but also in a very decorated and sophisticated way. Not only in a classy way, but also musically explained so we get to understand the whole process of how did we get fugue-rickrolled. My new go-to rickroll video.
I'm not going to post this on the main comment because I don't want to hurt the composer's feelings. I really enjoyed the Barbie Girl Fugue because it was just well-done, but also it very much highlighted the motif. So, it was sort of like Fugue re-make of a song. // This piece was also well-done, but my issue is that it only uses the beginning motif but never carries the whole phrase (which ends in the line "never gonna tell a like and hurt you."). So, what happens is that the Never Gonna Give You Up Gigue does't really sound or "feel" like the original tune or idea. Listening to this is more like listening to an entirely different, independent composition. It's still amazing stuff, though, and I subscribed! (PS, come check out my color-music theory here at: _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
Damn, came for the music, stayed for the production quality and animations. Also really good job demonstrating & explaining all these music theory concepts over the course of the piece. What a piece of art :D
Excellent work, Josep - thank you very much indeed. It goes without saying that the musical work is first class, but you're setting a new standard in piano video here, and the rest of us will be racing to catch up. Keep it up, please!
You excel in the art of hybridising the familiar tunes of the 20th century with the lovely Melodie’s of the classical era. I’m of the firm belief that anything made classical/orchestral will sound just as good if not better than the original, but it must be done right. You are proof of that method. Your Barbie Fugue was honey to my ears and if I’m not mistaken, the odd pattern of notes does also poke it’s head up in this piece too. Somewhere around one minute. Like a fingerprint of your style. All that’s left to say is Bravo!
I'd like you to know that I've shown this to my Music Appreciation class when covering fugues and the Baroque period. Fugues are really dense and hard to follow for students, but the way you edited this made it much more engaging and easy to follow, not to mention the use of a familiar tune as the subject. The graphics really draw your ears to important parts that make it easier to digest. Perfect!
I was already humbled by the fact that you not only composed and played this, but you also did the awesome editing, and thenI read you are a cellist...What have i done with my life? You are amazing.
This is such a great modern example of one of the most complex musical forms in history. Plus, the clean editing helps to make it clear how the themes weave into each other. Amazing work!
This is insane!! Beautiful composition and what an elegant performance. Really love that mini-interlude at 0:36 and that sequence moment at 1:36 😍 Truly a genius pianist 👏🎹
Thank you Josep! Great work! I have been a pianist since I was a kid with 8 years of classical lessons. But as an adult I have turned to playing easy pop/rock songs by ear. Now your work has inspired me to get into classical music again! I recently bought an upright piano and I am having my best life playing on it :)
One of the best visualizations of a composition I've ever seen! I'm really digging the scrolling score parts and the little animations. This is so compositionally pristine - I especially liked 1:06 - 1:10 and 1:34 - 1:45 :D Thank you for the truly excellent work!!
I stumbled across this channel through the classical Barbie girl doorway, then tumbled in and down, down, down a wormhole. Now I have angry clients, a hungry husky, and parrots that have learned to laugh and snort in strange manners. Sublime.
Please, please, let us know how we can support you in a way that can keep these videos coming. You're seriously one of the most talented people on UA-cam, you absolutely nail the fugue and the style of Bach. Please, allow people to support you, to buy things you create. I would be first in line. Absolutely fantastic.
Great visuals! Incredibly well crafted piece from a tune that is deeply rooted in pop culture! It really is a joy to listen to your pieces. only the irrepressible desire for more remains... The only content creator who makes me drop everything as soon as a new video with a new track comes out!
Just...grats!! Genial! Explained, clear, new aired but with all the classical counterpoint. You know what you're doing... and you're doing really great!
I love how you mixed together the C# Major Fugue from Bach's WTC BWV: 848 (Book 1), and Rich Rolls theme. Its a great insight that you noticed the similarity between the two themes and married them exquisitely. Keep doing what you are doing to make Fugue's popular again, Bach tried and failed, then Beethoven, Mahler, Rachmaninov (though not really) and then Glenn Gould, well maybe J.C. Alonso can! I have my fugues waiting in the wing to join you;)
@@JosepCastanyerAlonso its an incredibly logical fugue. I love how Bach exhausts almost all permutations of each motif. Both the theme and counter-theme, but always with respect to the foundational idea. As for the WTC, I love all of them, but one of my top favorites in the C major fugue, it is such an incredibly difficult fugue to write, its so dense with stretto. Pure genius. Have you explored the Golberg Variations? As in there lies my favorite contrapuntal work of Bach. Var 4 and 10 (the fughetta). Magnificent!! The Beatles Penny Lane barrowed their baseline from this work (probably variation 4). Consider covering it. You're welcome😉. Parita in Dm (BWV 1004), and his passacaglia in Cm BWV 582 (for organ) are my favorite Bach works -- unmatched in their glory and majesty. One more question, you are very proficient at keyboard, why did you choose the cello as your primary instrument? I am not accomplished as a pianist, but proficient, I love playing it (I play guitar and drums as well, but am mostly into composition) however, I've longed to learn the cello because of its rich sonorous tones! Have you found any works for cello than Bach's cello suite'? Do any even exist?
Hehe yes! I have previously used the backwards running music to showcase retograde motion since it is more logical to do so, you are right. In this case you maybe have to think of the notes as being upside down as well. 😅/Josep CA
I was not prepared for so many different parts of this composition (I started typing “arrangement” and got about two letters in before correcting myself) …but the first time it modulates to minor. Whew.
This was awesome, I love how much complexity a simple figure can achieve. I'm curious about how would you compose an orchestral version, without the limitations of the piano.
Wow wow wow wow wow Everything is just perfection here, excellent work and a beautiful original piece. I hope Rick gets to see this. Will put a smile on his face. Keep it going!

Wow those animations must have taken forever!! Both the video and the fugue are so impressive 🤩🤩 I can barely play a fugue, so composing one seems so insane to me! This is awesome ❤❤
I've already praised your work but I'm not shy to do it again! I'm profoundly sad that the physical condition of my beloved idol/master Keith Jarrett prevents him to produce more masterpieces nowadays but I'm also so glad there are a few extremely talented fellows like you to disrupt musical frontiers and dazzle us with such beauties! THANK YOU.

And also to Paul Simon, I've heard.

Not only is this fantastic musically wise, but as a video, this is truly impressive. The tracking, and the text behind the hand… *chefs kiss*. Kudos!
nice spot, I'd never have noticed that text effect, but yeah it works
Agreed!!
Yeah, perfect editing. Great tool to learn about composition
Ive never been so happy to be rickrolled
