Kudos for referring to a jiangshi as a "vampire/zombie". Lots of people in the west know it as a chinese vampire, but from what I have read many chinese see it as closer to a zombie. Its especially fitting as the old mythological origins of the jiangshi line up with old zombie myths closer than vampires, as they are both made by a spellcaster rather than turned by a progenitor.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  Рік тому +8

One of my guilty-pleasure mangas has an occasional jiangshi character pop up, which they treat as another zombie, so that's probably why in my head I think of them more like that than a vampire.

@@JoeGoesOver 42:04: Thanks for the math equation and history lesson; that really helped in figuring out something from the LazyTown episode: “Rottenbeard”. Robbie Rotten had an ancestor that was a ruthless pirate, who confronted a hero similar to Sportacus. Given the Mayor knowing about a man similar to Sportacus, who wears a #9, but Sportacus wears a #10, I’ve come to the conclusion that Rottenbeard confronted the original Sportacus the 1st, meaning the Rottens and the Sportacuses have had a long rivalry since the same time period that Redbeard from Scooby-Doo was in. Given LazyTown was conceptualized in the 1990s, nearly 20 years after this Scooby episode, I’ve come to the conclusion that each generation of Sportacuses happened every 30 years, and 40 years for two of the Sportacuses (or three Sportacuses, if you count the Nick Jr series).

The Red Baron was my favourite villain from The New Scooby Doo Movies when I was a kid and thought the episode was action-packed. I also noticed that they reused music from Dastardly and Muttley. Oh Hanna-Barbera, you cheap bastards, but I still love you.
I also remember loving all of The Harlem Globetrotters episodes.

Hanna-Barbera re-used EVERYTHING. I can't remember off the top of my head, but I know they have even re-used bad guys from one series to another. The characters were different, but their layout was identical (or with a slightly different color scheme).
On the one hand, the studio's cheapness is a major problem with all their shows.
On the other hand, they only reason they could do so much for television was by cutting corners everywhere.
At least they never got as bad as 'Clutch Cargo'. THAT show was NIGHTMARE INDUCING!

      Exactly!
At the time, Saturday Morning television seemed to becoming a fight between Hanna-Barbera and Filmation, in addition to CBS versus ABC and NBC, so it often feels like 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies' was both the animation studio and network's way of filling a time slot and promoting their other offerings.

You hit the nail on the head.
I hate to commit to anything because like most small and medium UA-cam channels, this is a one-man operation and with other obligations, putting out content can be a major undertaking. The last thing I want is for this hobby to turn into something that isn't enjoyable.
By the same token, there's always a chance that this hobby could turn into a source of reliable income that would allow me to spend a lot more time on it, which is how many of the larger channels got to where they are now.
Having said that, though, nice comments like yours absolutely motivates me to keep producing, so thank you for that!

Best of all your videos are witty, thoughtful, and provide new perspective to moments or references that I otherwise never would’ve understood. Nah. All the drug users were working for Sid and Marty Krofft at the time.
The laziness and bad animation was more due to Hanna-Barbera both biting off more than they could chew when it comes to production while at the same time skimping on hiring animators.

Glad to see you're doing better! No worries about the delay, health comes first.
I definitely agree that they could've done more with the Red Baron to connect him to the location, but at the same time the circumstances surrounding his death would likely have posed some unique problems. He was suffering from severe depression at the time, and likely went far behind enemy lines on purpose with the intent of being shot down. There's also some debate over who was truly responsible for bringing him down; while the RAF credits the Canadian pilot Arthur Roy Brown as being the man who fired the fatal shots, modern analysis points to an Australian AA gunner as being responsible. The most common names tossed around in this case are Cedric Popkin, w.J. "Snowy" Evans, and Robert Buie.
Sorry if that was a bit much, the Red Baron is just one of my favorite historical figures to research, and I couldn't pass up an opportunity to discuss the circumstances surrounding his end.
    Looking forward to more!

I like Michael Bell, but you're absolutely correct. His voice doesn't match what Redbeard should have sounded like.

These videos are a great blend of a relaxed and informative theme, but I do have to ask, will you rank the villains of full on Scooby Doo movies as well, for example Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico and Aloha, Scooby-Doo to name a few, seeing as the full length feature films do go more in depth in the mystery, the operation and the villain in general, plus they are also a goldmine of potential content for you :D

Thank you very much for watching and commenting with such kind words!
I have been asked several times my plans for future series and I would like to say "yes", but at this stage these are quite time-consuming to produce as UA-cam is (at this point) just a hobby and one-person operation of writing, filming, editing and uploading.
As long as I don't get burned out, I'll probably continue as long as I can. I have to say the rush from the positive comments I generally receive after a new upload inspires me to keep going, but even then, sitting down at my desk staring at a blank Word document and turning it into 10 to 15 pages of material is never NOT daunting.
I've toyed with skipping ahead from series to series, but I feel there's merit to keeping with the Scooby timeline. This has proved particular important when considering how Redbeard in this video was a complete rip-off of an earlier episode.
If I didn't go in release order, I might have missed something like that.

As bad as the knockoff RedBeard and Ghost Crew were at scaring everyone else, you gotta admit, it is kinda hilarious seeing the gang do the fighting and win. The guy at 34:53 gets me laughing with that “What hit me?”. There’s something both hilarious and charming about a guy with a British accent getting beaten up so easily and saying something ludicrous like “What hit me?” in that exact tone of voice. @@JoeGoesOver, that or growing up watching Tom & Jerry or SpongeBob Squarepants does that to you. I still enjoy Tom’s screams to this day, and I can appreciate the whole silent character trope a lot more just as much as the dialogue characters. Between my love for the original Tom & Jerry, and my foray into the horror genre, I’ve developed a bit of a desensitization to onscreen gore despite still having a hatred for disintegration (as I mentioned earlier in one of your videos) or even petrification (my childhood love for Barbie movies made me automatically dislike any villain who turn innocent people to stone as well). Anyway, hopefully you got the point. I can’t argue about the British thing, cause I loved BBC’s Sherlock (the one with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman), plus one of my favorite UA-camrs is the UA-camr British gamer Stampylonghead and British gamer theorist Tericho. Thank you for your your nice comment!
One of the most consistent elements of the Scooby-Doo franchise is how inconsistent it is. Every series, film and DTV offering exists in its own separate universe and as I recall, Scooby Snacks have had at least two separate origin stories, one of which actually explains why they're named after Scooby. They can't even decide if they're cookies for humans or dog biscuits!
Scooby Snacks are essentially the Scooby-Dooniverse version of Popeye's spinach, only instead of strength, it gives Shaggy and Scooby courage. However, I feel the same way about them being used like this as I do for any breakfast cereal commercial featuring a mascot trying to get hold of the product by stealing or fraud (The Trix Rabbit for 'Trix' or Barney for 'Fruity Pebbles'): just buy your own. Seriously. The store doesn't care who they sell to. Just grab a box and walk up to the counter and give them money. It's a snack, not condoms. No need for embarrassment. I mean, Scooby Snacks come in retail packaging. They're clearly available in stores in that world.
My wife has bought the real-life product for the family over the years and they're fine if you like graham crackers, but since they're not chocolate, they're not my go-to snack.

The Red Baron was NOT a yahtzee! He died a good decade before they came to power. He has always been a fascinating figure to aviation buffs, WWI buffs, and history buffs (you could perhaps include Peanuts buffs as well since Snoopy battled him and there was a famous song by The Royal Guardsmen about him). Though he had died 50+ years before this cartoon aired, most people knew of him and how formidable he was as a pilot.

Honestly the thought of an iconic Scooby Doo villain redeeming himself is fascinating. I actually had thoughts in my imagination, but in a shocking twist one of the villains I thought of was Uncle Stuart from What The Hex Going On. I like to think that since he showed some shame and possibly remorse during his unmasking, there could’ve been a chance for him to be more than likely to care about changing his ways. Indeed out of all the evil relatives the Scooby gang have faced off against in the early Scooby Doo shows, Uncle Stuart gave me the biggest impression that he cared about his niece more than the others. It would be interesting to imagine a sort of fight where he would face off against Uncle Leon from the Gramps The Vamps episode, acknowledging that he was a terrible uncle but also pointing out that Uncle Leon was an even worse uncle to his own niece. Leon pulls out a gun and shoots Stuart who dies in Sharon’s arms, and Leon gets his butt beaten by Sheriff Stone from Mystery Incorporated. I know it’s grim, but if years of watching Disney and Dreamworks movies, and especially Anastasia, have taught me anything, it’s that you can make a cartoon for kids and still traumatize them to good effect with a gruesome death. Uncle Stuart dies trying to do the right thing in the end, and he almost succeeded, thanks to those meddling kids and their dog and their overprotective sheriff of a father figure. At least, that’s how I would end Uncle Stuart’s story, but that’s one villain, who knows what might happen to the others?

Interesting your dad was a pilot! The best way to understand him is the old adage all pilots share: "Any landing you can walk away from is a good one!".
RE: The Red Baron, he did have descendants through his brother, Lothar - also a fighter pilot during the war. He had two sons whose descendants are still part of the Von Richthofen family legacy. It's believed The Red Baron himself did NOT have children although there was a wealthy family in Brazil using the name Von Richthofen who claimed they were descended directly from him, but the rest of the family in Germany dispute this.

All I know is when he eventually passes, I'm going to have a hell of a time selling the airplane he's been building in his garage for years, let alone the ultralight he seems to have forgotten about and the plane in the local airport hanger that he flies.
It's baffling how some people will claim a relationship to someone famous despite how easily it can be debunked. I'll never forget going to high school with a guy who tried changing his last name to that of a famous rock singer at the time so he could say they were related, despite that musician having gone by a stage name and not his actual last name.

Yeah the ghost of Redbeard was pretty lazy as it’s the same villain only made fully white like a proper ghost instead of a pirate cosplaying and the henchmen are British for some reason, they should have gone a swamp monster instead or the Lizardman of Orc Swamp as the episodes villain instead or maybe Gator Ghoul which I wonder if he is based on the Lizardman?
Speaking of Groot did you see Guardians of the Galaxy 3 because if you have not do it before the Mama Cass Eliot episode and I wonder where the villains supposed to be based on the Gotten Candy Glob the one villain that Shaggy and Scooby killed?
