There's something so touching about tough-guy 9 joking with Rose before regenerating. He really tried his best not to upset her, didn't tell her what had happened, and even made her laugh as he was dying. Guy really set the bar high.

  • @zacbob1149

The scene that really got me was when 10 went back to Rose’s estate in the year of 2005, before she met 9. The way 10 said you’re going to have a great year or something really pulled my heartstrings because we realise how big the RTD era was.

When people talk about Twice Upon A Time, they always talk about how long he delayed regeneration and those one or two jokes that didn't land. I never see anyone talk about how this is a story about the Doctor at his very lowest, contemplating suicide. Ending his life. It's so heartbreaking, especially for any viewers who may have similar thoughts or had similar experiences, and it's handled so beautifully. The Doctor at the end, deciding to reluctantly keep going. It shows that he's not okay right now, but he has faith that he can be again in the future. My only gripe is that I think 13 recovered way too fast. Her first moments on screen are smiling and bubbley and jokey. This is a person who was ready to kill themselves 15 minutes ago! What happened?

You can say the same about tennant to Smith. Ten didn't want to regenerate yet Eleven was bumbling round a kid on a sugar rush 10 minutes later. Realistically, he'd more mournful and maybe even hate his new face

@mrdr0161 Tennant didn't try to stop himself from regenerating. That's the point you're missing. He was mournful because he realized he just wasted 3 lives in 6 years. From his perspective, this was his last regeneration. He was scared. Capaldi straight up tried to kill himself. He WANTED to die, that's very different

Some people say the 12th Doctor's regeneration went on a little too long. I disagree. This WAS the Doctor's greatest strength - audible reflection. That's how he sorted things out, that's how he came to conclusions, that's how he analyzed. And if we're looking at this at a BTS perspective, this was an honorable good-bye from both Capaldi and Moffat. "Doctor, I let you go" is a fitting end. No tears, no heartbreak (from them), just a solemn but sweet goodbye.

Brilliant ranking, definitely some differences to my own but I think you did a wonderful job explaining your placements! My ranking would be:
The Thirteenth Doctor - Whittaker to Tennant (it is thematically and visually beautiful, a perfect end to Jodie's time and showing why this Doctor was so special)
Ninth Doctor - Eccleston to Tennant
Eleventh Doctor - Smith to Capaldi
Fifth Doctor - Davison to C Baker
Twelfth Doctor - Capaldi to Whittaker
Fourth Doctor - T Baker to Davison
Eighth Doctor - McGann to Hurt
Seventh Doctor - McCoy to McGann
Tenth Doctor - Tennant to Smith
    Second Doctor
First Doctor - Hartnell to Troughton
Third Doctor - Pertwee to T Baker
War Doctor - Hurt to Eccleston (albeit he doesn't show up)
Sixth Doctor - C Baker (though really McCoy in a Wig) to McCoy

Five's will always top my personal list, but the points called out about 12's really have it contending for #1. With that said, I think it'd be worth examining "Caves" deeper to see why Five's regen rightfully nudges Ten's. I'm not disrespecting Ten's regen, Tennant, or any of it, but there's things that give Five's the edge in terms of meaningfulness.
Had Ten's mini-tantrum not been a thing, we'd have a different story. But it was there, and in spite of all the emotional turmoil, it felt out of place. Sure, he absolutely did the right thing by sacrificing himself for Wilf, but I felt Ten should have stood brave in the face of the situation.
Five, on the other hand, took utter responsibility for his actions and put literally everything on the line to save Peri. It's very worth pointing out that none of the events of "Caves" would have unfolded in the ways they did had the Doctor's curiosity been curbed. And yes, I know, without that there wouldn't have been a story. But there's where the brilliance of the late-great Robert Holmes is. He crafted the perfect story of just how many consequences can happen as a result of the Doctor's curiosity or interference.
As a result, Five put Peri in terrible danger, and had to own up to that. He put his own life at stake and paid the ultimate price. Amongst all the chaos around him that was caused by his own actions, he sucked it up and owned up to what had to be done. The first time a Doctor gave up his own life purely to save his companion. Gorgeous, heartbreaking, and perfect.
That's why the "Caves" regen gets my top spot and always will.
But, here's my list. I don't think of things in terms of "worst to best", nothing like that. To me, there is no "worst" anything in Doctor Who. I love it all, so I prefer to say "something wasn't as good as something else", aka "it's all good no matter what."
    Five - see above!
Twelve - hugely emotional companion farewells, epic pre-regen speech.
Four - saving the universe and being killed by your arch-nemesis, doesn't get much better!
Thirteen - the perfect, most gorgeous and simple regen that had SO much depth.
Nine - heartbreaking farewell, Eccelston's performance was breathtaking.
Three - like the Fifth Doctor, Three owned up to what he had to face. Sarah being there = immensely emotional.
Ten - superb, would have been flawless if not for his little tantrum. But huge shoutout for RTD echoing back to Four and Five's companion "flashbacks" in a whole new way. I've seen other comments in other places that have said his farewell was too long and drawn-out. That's a bunch of nonsense in my book!
One - the original, you might say! Hartnell on his last legs was still perfect, still powerful!
Eleven - No dry eyes when he gives his farewell speech and when Amy shows up.
Two - immense impact in spite of the forced regen, we learned about his people, and what happens when you cross them.
Eight - Paul McGann needs his own TV run as Eight, even a short mini-series would do. Incredible performance.
Seven - shocking for sure, but it was vastly different. McCoy passed the baton with his own style.
Six - tough to swallow, but circumstances were what they were. BF expanding his regen was amazing!
War - nice nod to Hartnell when saying "wearing a bit thin." Simple and sweet, and Hurt's performance made his regen shine.

Hi, I'm from Russia, but I've been a Whovian for about 10 years. I'm really glad I came across this channel recently. I want to thank the creator of this video, because the list of regenerations is 100% consistent with mine. Special thanks for taking into account the audio play where the Sixth regenerates and did not omit the regeneration of the Thirteenth from the top, which was very beautiful, sad and truly Doctor-like (mainly due to the acceptance of the fact of the latter’s death).

  • @catherineehlers8115

I guess I have 3 regenerations that I consider the best for different reasons. For the speech, I like the 11th Doctor's regeneration. Matt Smith's last words as the Doctor: "I will not forget one line of this. Not one day. I will always remember when the Doctor was me." And then Matt looks directly into the camera. That gets me every time. Matt Smith saying goodbye to the Doctor. (I also love that regeneration because my favorite Doctor, Peter Capaldi, is about to appear.
The 10th Doctor's regeneration had the best pyrotechnics. His actual farewell was a bit whiny, but the sheer power of the regeneration just blew me away! Like a bomb going off!
I also liked the 13th Doctor's regeneration even though she wasn't my favorite Doctor. The music was beautiful, the regeneration looked nice, and I loved the setting on a cliff overlooking the sea. Makes me think of the coast of Oregon, which is about an hour from where I live.

The scene that got me was the 50th Special with William Bradley. William Hartnell was the first one who really set the series tunning..and he was t hff e one who defined what each button switch or lever dit... even chastising the set crew for getting them wrong. But seeing the first Doctor as the character he was, during the regeneration scene for him to look over and see Matt Smith as the Doctor smiling back at him....that got me good...as the first knows that he has a long experience ahead...and it is all good.
Fav doctors: David, Peter D, Collin, Matt, Christopher, Peter K Jon, John,Tom, Patrick, Paul, Sylvester William.

Your characterization of the 7 --> 8 regeneration is about how I have always felt about it. It was completely uncharacteristic of Sylvester McCoy's Doctor. It would have been different had he been shielding someone... a companion, a random person... but to just step out of the TARDIS and get waxed like that is just bad.

      C. That's what it should be, 9, 11 and 12 were optimistic. Unlike 10s which was way too overdramatic.
      D. That's pretty much been what Doctor Who does everytime it tries to mess around with stuff like that.

@@blueknight07 Nope, the doctor was in danger and dying but all the companions just up and left her. If it was another Doctor they would have stayed to help like Sarah Jane, the 5th Doctor, the 10th Doctor etc. It was just utterly bizarre. It was like someone on set was saying c'mon we gotta wrap this up and wipe the slate clean for the new showrunner. Tbh it encapsulates all of Chibnalls run an utter mess.

I’m glad the Fifth Doctor was at least at the top for classic regenerations. One thing people often overlook is this is the first time the Doctor held back his regeneration. Just before the cliffhanger to episode 3 of Caves we see the regeneration effect for a brief moment and the Doctor squints and shakes his head and it goes away. It’s not expanded on much. The director said that was his best interpretation of how Robert Holmes had written him holding back the regeneration so that he could actually have a chance to save Peri. And that’s why he thought he could potentially die, he thought maybe he missed his chance.

I always assumed it was due to the attack on the tardis causing a bit of a crash landing. He wouldn't be exercising while wearing his full costume anyway. • @tivednagol9127
      @tivednagol9127 11 місяців тому

@@devinrobertson5251 no he didn’t. Incarnations and regenerations are separate. Here, let me explain by establishing three sets of ordinal numbers: one for Doctors, one for incarnations, and one for which upcoming regeneration they went through. So the First Doctor is 1/1/1, the Second is 2/2/2, all the way through the Eighth Doctor, who’s 8/8/8. Then Eight regenerates into the War Doctor, who isn’t numbered, so the ordinal number of Doctors is suspended while the incarnation and upcoming regeneration numbers each go up one, making War’s count War/9/9, since he’s the War Doctor who’s the ninth incarnation and who underwent the ninth regeneration.
Then War regenerates into Nine. Now, since Nine identified as the Doctor, the Doctor count resumes at 9 while the incarnation and upcoming regeneration counts go up one like normal, making Nine’s count 9/10/10. This continues through his regeneration into the Tenth Doctor, the eleventh incarnation whose upcoming regeneration will be (at the time) the eleventh. So Ten’s count at first is 10/11/11.
Then comes _The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End,_ where Ten uses what would’ve been his eleventh regeneration to heal himself and siphon off the rest into his spare hand. The Doctor and incarnation counts remains the same because no new incarnation was produced, i.e. Ten didn’t become Eleven. But a regeneration _was_ expended, so the upcoming regeneration count goes up one. Since Ten now undergoes the twelfth regeneration in _The End of Time,_ his count goes from 10/11/11 to 10/11/12. Now the counts are in ascending order.
Eleven corroborates the count in _The Time of the Doctor_ when he exclaims “regeneration number thirteen!”, his count being 11/12/13.
So to sum up, the count was N/N/N, then the War Doctor made it N/N+1/N+1, then Ten made it N/N+1/N+2.
I think the reason people get confused is because there’s a bad habit in the _Doctor Who_ fandom of using “regeneration,” to mean “incarnation.” Has this helped at all?

    • @devinrobertson5251
      @devinrobertson5251 11 місяців тому +1

@tivednagol9127 you're wrong. He's still the next doctor. This was said by 11. If we're being technical, war was 9, pushing everyone back one, and if we continue being technical, ten is 11 and 12. What you said literally does not matter and your making up headcanon. He took up two doctor "slots". He's not "still" ten, if he's literally the next doctor after 10. He still was named the 10th doctor, even though he was number 11, but that's just semantics at that point.
      So is 14 not 14?
      1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 war 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 that's how they "Label" themselves. It doesn't change the fact that war is actually 9, 10-2 is actually 12, etc.
You're making up your own headcanon when this is literally established. You're wrong

    • @tivednagol9127
      @tivednagol9127 11 місяців тому

@@devinrobertson5251 nope, you're wrong. The fact that you say "you're wrong", "you're making up headcanon" twice in the same comment shows your lack of an argument.
The Tenth Doctor outright _said_ what he did in _Journey's End._ What Eleven told Clara in _The Time of the Doctor_ was a simplification. How do I know this? Context clues. She'd just come back to Trenzalore after being in the Time Vortex; to use the same verbiage Ten used with his companions would've only confused and exasperated her more.
One incarnation cannot be two, and each Doctor can only be one incarnation. You're basically saying Ten lied to his companions when he had absolutely no reason to ("the Doctor lies" doesn't and can't apply here).
The fact that you think Ten is both the eleventh and twelfth incarnations shows exactly why my three numbers are needed: So that people don't spout bullshit like this.
